Why is ical automatically setting new events as "all day" events in Lion

After upgrading to Lion, everytime I add a new event in the Month panel it automatically selects the "all day" checkbox.  It didn't used to do this and it's kind of annoying....anybody else?

Gustlock,
Default event creation in Month view results in an all day event.
Lion iCal Help (Add events to a calendar) says: "Add a new event in Month view by double-clicking within the day you want the event to appear. Enter a name and time duration for the event in the event’s title field, and then press Return."
So, in your case try entering "Meeting at 9am"...that will create a one hour event named Meeting.
Lion iCal data detectors are supposed to make entry easier??

    With 10.7.2 update iCal does not allow you to set "Reminders" by draging events from "All Day Events" into "Reminders" is there another way to do this instead of having to type out the entire reminder with date, time, and type?
    With Lion 10.7.1. you where able to drag events from "All Day Events" into the "Reminders" bar to create upcoming reminders.

    Exactly the same question I was about to post!
    Great being able to sync reminders (well overdue) however if I have to re-type a calener envent into reminders it's a waste of time!!
    Come on Apple!!
    Just need an option for the calender event to add to reminder or the old drag to add to reminder functionality back, Please???

  • New ical no longer lets you see all-day events without scrolling, can this be changed?

    I have lots of all-day events on my ical, just upgraded to from mobileme to ical and the new calendar does not expand all-day events to allow you to see them all without scrolling.  I really need to see all of them without scrolling through them.  This applies to both the weekly & daily views.  Is there a way to change this?  The previous version allowed you to view them all, I don't call this progress.

    I understand now - that behavior is annoying under the circumstances you describe, as you clearly want to indicate only a 'delay' in the start date and not necessarily and extension of the end date.
    This is one of those human interface things where they may have considered the behavior, and decided that instantly and automatically maintaining the event duration was the best choice, though a savvy programmer could have likely avoided the issue by testing for a duration of > 1, and changing only those cases where the duration was = 1. Durations of < 1 would not exist, by definition, so it would have been an extremely simple conditional test.
    I don't think that you are actually being too picky: the case you describe is not necessarily the controlling event type, but is highly likely to be encountered [it seems] and therefore should have been accounted for in the manner I described just above, or by some other similar mechanism.
    It's funny how these issues arise: the recently released Entourage single day event definition is different than the one used in iCal, as that team chose to define an all day event as:
    2006-03-15 00:00:00 +0000 for start, and
    2006-03-16 00:00:00 +0000 to end
    While both the iCal event description and the Entourage description might represent the same data points on either a 12 or 24 hour clock, they are clearly not identical, and this 'disconnect' in definitions might cause future problems as both applications push different representations to the truth while describing the same event.

  • ICal + iPhone + Exchange 2003 + Outlook 2007 + "all day" Events 7 hours off

    Whenever an ALL DAY event is created on either the iPhone or iCal when the event is synced thru Entourage and into the Exchange Server and into Outlook 2007 the appointments are off -7 hours which I believe works out to GMT with Daylight savings time kicked in. Times are correct in Entourage. Correcting the time (making it an ALL DAY event) in Outlook 2007 and the resulting re-syncing does not impact Entourage, iCal or the iPhone. Since iPhone is syncing via iCal as the first step, I believe the issue is with iCal no the iPhone.
    Time Zone Support is OFF on iCal and the iPhone.
    iPhone updated to 1.0.1
    iTunes updated to 7.3.2.6
    iCals ver 2.0.5.1069
    Vista Premium and Outlook 2007 Fully Patched
    Thanks

    This had no impact on the problem. I have confirmed that this is an issue with iCal and not the iPhone. An all day appointment on for example August 15 created in iCal shows up correctly in Entourage syncing to an Exchange Server. However, when the appointment propogates to Outlook 2007, the All Day event now displays as from 7:00 pm August 14 to 7:00 pm on August 15.
    Time Zone support has no impact regardless of setting on iCal.
    Close inspection of the Event in Outlook shows ALL DAY is selected but the greyed out times are from 7 to 7 as described above.

  • Calendar automatically adding alerts to all-day events

    When I schedule an all day event in my calendar, the alert fields show 'None.'  I also have the default alert in Preferences set to 'None' for all-day events.  After I finish scheduling the event and re-open it, the alerts fields are populated!  There is an alert set to 1 day before and a second email alert set to 1 day before.  I set them back to 'None', close and close the event.  When I re-open it, the alerts are back!  Maddening!  Any suggestions?
    By the way, the default alert settings on my iPhone and iPad are also set to none.  My calendar account is a gmail account.

    Isnt there any other way than doing it manually? I have a lot of birthdays and anne. saved on the contacts info on my outlook with the alert set to go off at 8 AM but as the previous person said....all alerts tend to go off at 12 midnight which is quite irritating.

  • To-Do as All Day Event

    Hi,
    Is there any possible way to make an Applescript that automatically copies your To-Do items and then creates an All-Day event for each of them? This is really handy for viewing To-Do items with due dates from an iPod's interface.
    Thanks,
    Harrison

    This might do the job. It makes a new event from any ToDo with a due date and deletes the ToDo. I have added a line to make the new event an all day event but this extra has NOT been tested.

  • Order of all day events • printing list view without empty days

    I have only just started to use iCal in a work context. I need to programme over 500 events in several different locations (probably up to 10 locations on one day). I have divided these locations into five regions, and have made a calendar for each region.
    Times are not important - just the dates, so I have been entering these events as all day events. What I would like to be able to do is ensure that in the month view (and particularly the print out) that the events I put in are always ordered in the same order that I have set up the calendars in the sidebar (I would also like more than 4 events displayed per day in the month view, but that's another matter!). I have been looking on these discussion boards and elsewhere on the internet and this appears to be a feature that many users would like implemented.
    I would also then like to be able to print out separate list views for each region (calendar), but missing out the empty days. This also seems to be a feature that is wished for by many users, and has been requested for some time.
    Any news on whether such changes will be made? Come on Apple, I mostly love your hardware and software, but there are quite a few of these little functionality issues scattered around the place.

    In short, no - there is nothing you can do to determine the the display order of a series of all-day events in iCal. While the appear to generally be listed either in the order in which they were created or in the order in which your calendars appear in the left sidebar, even this is not always the case.

  • All-day events moving a day ahead

    I've recently (three weeks or so) started experiencing a problem whereby all-day events in iCal on my Mac appear a day earlier on my iPhone. So, for example, my sister's birthday on the 9th shows up on the 8th on the iPhone. Dates appear OK on the iPad, though. I guess it could be something to do with the leap year, but why does one device do it and not another.....

    First, please check as follows.
    * Launch iSync.
    * Click the icon of your phone.
    * Check the calendar (category) you'd like to sync is checked.
    * Click "option".
    * Check "Sync all day event" is checked.
    I can sync all day events by this way, but have trouble on my N73.
    All day events are synced as "meeting" starting from 12:00am to 11:59pm.
    In iCal, I have a lot of all day events including holidays, so the weekly view is full of black bars covering whole days.
    Should it be synced as "notes"?

    I hear this problem is partly solved on iSycn 3.0 in Leopard.

  • Wrap text for all-day events

    I've seen this question floating around, unanswered, since 2005...
    How can I get iCal to show the full text of an all-day event in Month View? There's lots of blank white space, but it seems that iCal never wraps the text of all-day events, and just cuts off the text that doesn't fit on one line.
    Am I missing something? Is there any way to get Apple to implement something so basic?

    I have the same question, but need to add one odd observation about my own experience...
    When I enter new events, sometimes the text wraps to two lines and sometimes the text is cut off after one line. It appears to be about 50-50. I can find no explanation for this behavior anywhere nor any way to control it. Very strange.

  • Long "All-Day" Event not showing in 2nd month

    All-Day events that begin before the last week in a month do not show up in the next month.
    Example: 3/29/2008 to 4/17/2008 (OK)
    3/27/2008 to 4/17/2008 (event doesn't show at all in April)

    I see the same problem.
    Shows properly on the web version if you publish.
    I am also seeing iCal crash A LOT when entering all day events that cover long periods repeated every year (never end). Entering data for vegetable planting dates for my area; e.g. peppers - March 25 - April 10 set as all day repeated yearly never ending.
    Reported to Apple; hopefully, both will be addressed in a future update....

  • All day events spanning two days

    I have a Nokia 6300 that I'm syncing with iCal but when I have an all day event in iCal it comes in as a timed event on the phone that runs from 13:00 on one day and then ends 13:00 the following day. Whereas if I add an all day event on the phone then it transfers into iCal perfectly ok. Any ideas?

    In the UK we're actually at GMT +1 hour to account for BST.

    Try setting your phone to that instead and see what happens.

  • All Day Event

    Hello.
    I tried get state 'All Day Event' from new appointment.
    Using the documentation 'GroupWise Tokens' I found only ItemSetAllDayEvent().
    How I can get state 'All Day Event' ?

    My application has integration with GroupWise. I use C3PO interface for integration.
    Application works with appointment window. Application creates a button on the toolbar and gets values from fields of appointment form.
    For create a button I use C3PO interface. For getting values from fields of appointment form I use GroupWise Tokens, exactly Token Commander. https://www.novell.com/documentation...dk_gwtoken.pdf
    Example using GroupWise Tokens:
    Retrieve field 'TO'
    string NewMessageID = "X00";
    string result = string.Empty;
    // 0 - To
    string method = string.Format("ItemGetText(\"{0}\"; 0)", NewMessageID);
    _gwCmder.Execute(method, out result);
    Retrieve field 'Start Date'
    string dateString = string.Empty
    // 126 - BeginDateTime
    // 174 - MAPIDate. Returns in format: Year/Month/Day 24HR:MIN.
    string method = string.Format("ItemGetDate(\"{0}\"; 126; 174)", NewMessageID);
    _gwCmder.Execute(method, out dateString);
    So, I can retrieve 'Body', 'Start Date' ,'End Date', 'Subject', 'To', I can set state of checkbox 'all day event' -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/fmzywxj0iq...ample.png?dl=0
    Example of setting checkbox state :
    string result = string.Empty;
    string method = string.Format("ItemSetAllDayEvent(1)");
    _gwCmder.Execute(method, out result);
    Result -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ca38ypx27...ample.png?dl=0
    But I can't retrieve state of checkbox 'all day event'.
    I didn't find any function for retrieve state of checkbox 'all day event'
    How can I get state by another way?

  • How can I print multiple lines in my All Day Events (month view)?

    Does anyone know if there is anyway to print multiple lines for all day events? When I print my iCal from a monthly view, my all day events (positioned as a header) only print the words that can fit into the daily box, instead of going into multiple lines and displaying the whole text.
    For example:
    Los Angeles County Fair, Don't forget to pick up John and Jen
    will print as:
    Los Angeles County Fa......Jen
    Anyone have any idea how to solve this?
    P.S. I have already tried meddling with fonts and page sizes to no avail.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    So far as I know, an allday event only ever shows a single line of text regardless of view.
    Consequently, how much you can see is governed by the width of the day (or days) in that view.

  • Issue: all day events arent shown in year view

    Hi,
    the normal behavior would indicate an event in bold in the year view. but this only happens on days where normal events (no all day events) have been set up.
    i cross checked it with a 2012 client. working as expected. all day events show up in the year view.
    excerpt from the manual:
    Code:
    Changing How All-Day Events Are Displayed
    You can change the way that all day events are accepted into your calendar by using the Options menu.
    1. Click Tools > Options, double-click Calendar, then click the General tab.
    2. In the Accept Options area, click the drop-down menu located beneath Accept All-Day-Events I send to myself as, then choose the option you want.
    3. Click OK.
    sry, but i dont see how i can change the way how all day events are displayed.
    is there still a need to copy the view files to the groupwise server?
    thx

    bahsig wrote:
    > sry, but i dont see how i can change the way how all day events are displayed.
    The setting you quote is actually to determine how all-day events that you
    create for yourself are handled (for any future event you create). By default,
    all-day events have a display of "free" (as opposed to "busy" or "tentative" or
    "out of office"). If your calendar is "free", then there is no bolded
    indication that you have something scheduled in the year view.
    If you look at an all day even in your calendar, you will see a box under
    recurrence that says either "free/busy/out of office/tentative". In order for
    an all day event (or any event really) to bold the calendar number, this value
    cannot be "free".
    There is no need to copy views to the Post Office any longer. Views are in a
    fixed location on the server (/opt/novell/groupwise/agents/data) and the POA
    always has access to them.

  • Multiple lines of event title and location failed to show for All Day event in SharePoint 2010 Calendar

    I have a calendar with SPD workflow to display multiple lines for Title, Attendees, Location.
    1. Created a custom columne "Breaklines" and set to "Multiple lines of text"
    2. Set Monthly View to display the "Breaklines"
    3. in SPD I created a workflow like this:
    4. On the Calendar page, I used a javascript to remove the <br/>
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"
    type="text/javascript"></script><script
    type="text/javascript">
    function updateCalendarWeekday()
       $('.ms-acal-title').each(function(){
        var str = $(this).html();
        str = str.replace(/&lt;/g,
    "<");
        str = str.replace(/&gt;/g,
    ">");
        $(this).html(str);
    _spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push('calendarEventLinkIntercept');
    // hook into the existing SharePoint calendar load function
    function calendarEventLinkIntercept()
       var OldCalendarNotify4a
    = SP.UI.ApplicationPages.CalendarNotify.$4a;
       SP.UI.ApplicationPages.CalendarNotify.$4a
    = function ()
          OldCalendarNotify4a();
          updateCalendarWeekday();
    }</script><style>
    .ms-acal-item
                    HEIGHT:
    60px !important
    .ms-acal-summary-itemrow
                    HEIGHT:
    85px !important
    }</style>
    Everything works fine, except that when the All Day event is checked, the display screwed like this:
    I guess that when the event is All Day Event, the Start Time and End Time is not filled by the user (although they show in the form as 12:00 am -11:59PM), so the top line space is now used to display Title and Location. Since the Top Space for
    Start and End Time is a single line, it displays everything on one line. Plus the script does not act on this space.
    Does anyone know a fix for this problem?
    Thanks for any tips!

    Is there a way to modify the javescript so that it also works in the "start-end time" space?
