Why is iCal synching (and freezing)?

Gang,
I'm new to the forum. I tried to search but didn't find anything related to my question. If it's been covered elsewhere, please point me in the right direction.
I recently set up a new iMac at home, using Target Disk Mode to transfer the user accounts (2) and apps from my older Mac (running OS 10.3.9) to this one (running 10.4.3).
I run iCal on this computer and my work computer (a G5 running 10.3.9). I have a Home calendar and a Work calendar, and I back up each to a flash drive, which I use to back up the other computer (Work to the home computer, and Home to the work computer). Hope that makes sense.
In order to do this backup, I delete the calendar from iCal, then Import the updated version from my flash drive.
This has worked fine so far, but when I quit iCal, it pops up a message saying it is synchronizing, and it has a button that says "Abort and Quit."
Well, I don't know what it is synchronizing because I don't have .Mac, and the only synchronizing that I want to happen automatically is to my iPod, which it does just fine via iTunes.
The "Abort and Quit" button does nothing. I have to Force Quit iCal to get out of this.
Any idea what is going on? I can make normal changes to my calendars in iCal without this happening, but it has done it a couple times now after doing my delete/import bit from my backup file. Could there be a problem going back and forth between my work and home computers because of the OS difference or the way they handle backups (eg, iSync vs iTunes)? Or something screwy that got carried over from my old computer during the Target Disk transfer?
Hope this made sense. Any thoughts appreciated!

Anyone? Bueller?
Every time I import my work calendar from my flash drive into iCal, when I later quit iCal, it says it is synchronizing my changes, and gives me an "Abort and Quit" button that does nothing. I have to force quit every time. And it has nothing to sync to, AFAIK. What the heck?
I was doing this on my older computer (G4) running Panther without any problems. Now with the G5 and Tiger, it's giving me this grief.
TIA,

Go to the Settings app and check under General, International and see what language is set. Even if it correctly set, reset it.
If that doesn't work, try a rest of the iPad: hold down the On and Home buttons simultaneously until it shuts down. Ignore the Off slider if it appears. This will take 10 - 15 seconds or so. After it shuts down completely, press the On button to restart.

  • Very SLOW synching and freezing and dropping shared libraries

I have had my APT for about 2-3 years now. Never had issues until about a month ago.
In the past 3 days, i have spent a lot of time on the phone with tech support. My ATV would drop my shared library from my laptop, then it would appear again, drop it, appear again, etc ....
I decided to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the entire OS on the ATV.
But then we couldn't get the ATV to find the network. Considering my extreme station was in a different room, I bridged the network with another extreme I had on hand. My Wii and laptop in the living room pick up the signal with full strength. And the ATV shows full bars as well now.
I then tried to download the software update 3 times, and FINALLY I got it installed before it froze.
Now, I am streaming fine with my laptop, but I want to synch my Mac Pro with the Apple TV just like last time.
Now only has it taken 2 hours to synch 25 photos, it has been freezing still during the synch.
Tech support doesn't know what else to do.
    Any ideas?

I don't think i have two stations streaming the same network, but my main extreme station is at one end of my condo, and the Apple TV had issues reaching that signal, so we took an Express and bridged, or extended, the network.
Now that Apple TV sees the network, but the streaming, synching issues still continue.
Oh, and when is ay we, I mean the tech support people at Apple advised me to use the express (i already owned it) to extend the network signal range.

  • X-marks 4.3.3 add-on will not synch and freezes at log-in box.

I have tried "advanced settings" and "repair" in addition to trying to overwrite remote bookmarks manually using x-marks add-on, however in both cases the log-in dialog box for x-marks pops up and then freezes before showing blank fields for username & pw...... I have disabled sync in firefox also to no avail thanks

    I looked for x-marks at the '''https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/'''
but it was not listed. Where did you get it from?

  • Why does Mail open and freeze?

Just happened in the past 24 hours, I can open Mail but as soon as I move the cursor, it turns into a spinning wheel and I can't access any of the drop down menus.

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • Premiere cs6 continues to offset screen and freeze/crash after only seconds.

When opening premiere the issue sometimes happens instantly, or other times it happens after the first thing I click.
The Issue freezes the laptop and makes my laptop screen offset similar to the "offset" effect, where my screen is pushed to the left. and the left side of the screen is pushed off onto the right side of my screen.
I unfortunately have updated to OS X Yosemite and am currently running 10.10.1 on. Up to this point premiere has been running fine.
It started one day while I was in the middle of editing a video and then all of the sudden my screen went black... my laptop instantly shut off.
Since then, Premiere Pro CS6 has been completely unusable.
I was able to run premiere in safe boot mode, however my laptop runs far too slow to do anything in premiere in safe boot.
I have a project that I must get done in 2 weeks! Somebody please get back to me ASAP!

Well, it's been a while since my last report, mostly because I haven't been using the program as much... however, today I needed to use it and well... it happened.  And it happened on a blank document too.  I made sure that all my other applications were closed at this time, and when I rebooted it, it continues to freeze.  Here is what I saw on the task manager.  Seems to be pretty similar to last time:
I use Flash to do Timeline animation and sometimes vector art.  The program has crashed before on a reset of preferences.  You also noted that there is a Flash.exe instead of a Flash 32.exe, I don't see it in the task manager at all... I only see the Flash 32 that I've been posting.
Perhaps I may be missing something, but the reasons for crashing that you listed do not seem to be the reasons why I am crashing and freezing.  While I can understand loading up a bloated file and having it crash the program, I have never seen this program until CS6 freeze once, and then from then on out, until I restart the computer, it will freeze time and time again.  It's bewildering as to why that is happening.
The Application doesn't seem to be sucking in a ton of memory.  The application will crash out-of-the-blue.  Sometimes when I simply click into the program on a blank doc (like this last crash), it will freeze up.  And if the program isn't even able to work with a blank doc, I don't think the content of ANY file is the problem.
I'm really at a loss.  I might have to downgrade back to CS3.  This is one of my most used programs, and if it's impossible to have it run smoothly without me having to restart my computer every few hours, I'm not really sure what to do.

  • TS4062 we have 2 different iphones. When we are synching, the contacts and ical interfere and we end up by having all our contacts and ical info mixed together.

we have 2 different iphones 4 and iphone 4s. Why when we are synching, the contacts and ical interfere and we end up by having all our contacts and ical info mixed together?

Well are you syncing them with the same acount?  Are you syncing them to the same source?  If you are both syncing the iCal on the same computer then you are going to end up sharing all the entries.  You need two differnt AppleId's and user ID on the comuter you are syncing to if you want everything to stay seperate.

  • Ical synch: how can i stop deleting ical items and synch the rest?

When synching on itunes, it asks to delete 9000+ items from ical, add and modify are 50 or so each, and I'm very confused why this is happening.
How can i stop this and synch the rest? I do not want to delete anything but it doesn't seem to have option other than synch later.
I have icloud calendars synch on as well...
    Thanks!!

    Bruno,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are you using any sync software?
The easiest thing to try is to refresh the the com.apple.iCal.plist file. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the com.apple.iCal.plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart, and make sure the deletion preference is not checked.

  • WHY is backing up and synching so slow?

I know there are a number of solutions posted (I like this one, though have yet to try it: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7706721&tstart=0 ), but what I have found does not make any sense and I can't see why the iPhone is behaving so slowly visa vi synching and backing up. I started a backup yesterday at 03:20, and when I returned home (yes, these problems have caused me to go 2 days without a mobile phone -- thank goodness my car didn't break down and require me to call for assistance) at 17:20 it was only about 80% complete!?!! 14 hours and it only backs up 80%?? So I hit the "Transfer all purchases" item in the file menu and this cleared all my checked apps and then checked EVERY ONE so it tried to download all 250 or so apps that I usually swap in and out of my phone. The phone only supports 128 or so apps, so there's no point in loading more than that and I try to tailor my apps to the ones I feel like using on a given day or just to test some for a while. This did transfer my purchases so I had a copy of the apps I paid for on the phone on the computer, and as that was my main concern I decided to let the synch go. Well, 03:05 rolled around the following day (as it always does) and there was my iTunes, STILL ON THE "Y"s. It still wasn't even finished synching after all that time! I mean, we're talking only about 130 or so more apps -- a good chunk of the apps were already on the phone. And apps aren't big. What gives?
Anyway, that is my long exposition, but in summary, here is my question: WHY does synching and backup up take so unacceptably long? Let me quote you some numbers to see why I find this so unacceptable: USB 2.0 has a standard throughput of 40 MB per second. It theoretically can go faster and may in practice be slower, but for sustained transmission, it should be able to transfer data at this rate. So, for a 16GB iPhone, if you wanted to TRANSFER THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF THE PHONE, it should take LESS THAN 7 MINUTES! USB CANNOT be the bottleneck. And if USB can do it in 7 minutes (and that's to transfer EVERYTHING: most syncs and backups are much MUCH less than that) there is no reason -- ABSOLUTELY NO REASON -- it should be all that much slower to synch or back up. If the blame lies with the iTunes software, then you need to ask yourself, why is iTunes trying to do this in real-time? Why not transfer the data raw, and end the "backup" lock so that the phone can safely be unplugged and then in the background transform the "raw" backup into the normal format backup, making it impossible to close iTunes before this is done. Sure, if iTunes crashes or the power goes out before the Backup is completed, you'd have a corrupt backup, but all iTunes has to add here is a file flag -- for instance, the existence of a raw backup file -- to know that it died during a backup conversion and it needs to start again. Further, it should keep around the previous backup until the new backup is fully transformed. This would not be hard to do and should easily keep initial backups under 10 minutes! Further, after the first backup, all subsequent backups should be incremental, and the phone should maintain an internal change log so that it can easily perform incremental backus sometimes instead of always requiring a full one.
As for synching, I will admit that is more complicated, but surely we can get it to a reasonable time frame. On the iTunes side, the apps and other data should be stored in a form that makes them "easy" to synch with the iPhone. Save the iPhone profile locally so that the data that needs to be transferred is "ready to go". Also, have iTunes maintain a "change log" since last synch, so it can easily keep track of any new, downloaded applications. Then, when the phone is synched, it will maintain its own change log since last synch and iTunes and iPhones will quickly exchange change logs and then iTunes can quickly determine what it specifically needs to do to bring the phone and itself "up to date". As far as data from the phone, such as purchased music, videos or applications, this should be uploaded FIRST and should AT WORST take 10 minutes for the raw data transfer. This constitutes part of backing up as well, so in this case the two steps may be combined. Reading data from Flash is usually very fast, so I don't see the Flash being a real bottleneck here and I think the biggest bottleneck is just the USB 2.0 interface, which is already 40 MBps, sustained. Where I would cut apple some slack is in the application / music / videos upload. Not only does the iPhone have to contend with the 40 MBps bottleneck of the upload, but the write cycle for the flash chips used by the iPhone may also cause the potential throughput to be diminished. Does anyone have specs on the flash chips used in the iPhone? What is the sector size and how slow is it to write a sector?
Anyway, all I can say is that at times like these, I really wish I worked for Apple. People would NOT be having these problems were I on the job. I develop for real-time embedded OS development all the time and I know the kind of bottlenecks that exist in devices like the iPhone. I know the ARM has its limitations, but it is a nice processor architecture. So I just don't see why this has to be so slow. It really should not be. Can someone please explain?

TimeHorse, I too have had this problem but I've had it before iTunes 7.7.1.11. I was just now trying to copy some new music to my iPhone and it was taking about 1-3 minutes per song. Don't even get me started into how long the backup took.
One thing I happened to notice was Windows Defender was running a scan at the same time. When I closed it, magically iTunes synching sped up drastically (3 - 4 seconds per song). This doesn't make much sense to me since my iTunes library is on a network drive, but maybe iTunes is using some swap space or temporary files or something on the local hard disk which is slowing performance due to other HD activity. You might check your disk IO when iTunes is synching, could be a bottle neck...
    Anyway, just a thought

My colleague recently synched his phone and now has a full keyboard on the lock screen.  My lock screen keypad is set up like phone keys (alphanumeric).  He's wondering why his is different, and he also now cannot unlock it.  Anyone have this happen?  He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version.  He synched and now can't get back in.  He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine.  Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

  • Why does my screen turn blue and freeze every time i try to plug in my 'mini display to hdmi' cable into my thunderbolt port in order to use an external monitor?

why does my screen turn blue and freeze every time i try to plug in my 'mini display to hdmi' cable into my thunderbolt port in order to use an external monitor? it only works if i turn the computer on with it already plugged in.

Do you have gfxCardStatus installed?  Is your monitor set to "Integrated" or "Discrete".  You want it set to Discrete to drive the external HDMI display.
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC
    <About NVRAM and PRAM>
<Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)>
Are you sure you have a good miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable?
Do you have another HDMI display you can test against (your neighbor's HDMI capable TV).
Do you have friend that can test the cable using their Mac and maybe their TV or a monitor that has HDMI input.

Why doesn't apple have a file of events that ties to the iCal program and the Address book file? By having that relationship it seems that you could call up all of the events tied to a customer while in the address book or likewise call up all of the events tied to a contact that was in the iCal program as a scheduled meeting. Even in the to do's you could easily look back at the events tied to an individual so as to bring yourself up to speed with what you were doing with the individual in mind.

Why is my MBP Retina 15" continuously crashing and freezing within iPhoto as I flip through my photo albums ?  This has occured all day now, with about 12 reboots and the problem presists.  Problem started while sharing photos with facebook and now occurs while fipping through all photo albums.  Have had additional problems with continuose freezing up and locking up in many other native and non-native applications, freezing all the time.  This reminds me of window based systems !

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.  Repair permissions and restart your computer.  If this works, one of your peripherals is the culprit. Otherwise, you should post in the iPhoto forum area in case your issue is software related rather than the Macbook Pro.
