Why is iDVD crashing?

Earlier this week I created a new dvd on idvd with no problem. This evening I tried to create a new dvd and it crashed 8 times before I could get it to work, and even after that it didn't burn correctly. The picture is distorted.

• Where and in what codec is the original video material
• How did it come to iDVD. Directly from Camera or Via a Video-editor as iMovie or FinalCut - and exactly step by step - how was this done ?
• Free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk. How much ?
• In iDVD - What theme did You select ? PAL or NTSC ? other functions as sub-menus and SlideShows ?
• Did You Save as a DiskImage first - If so How did this play ?
• Brand of DVDs used
• Type of DVDs used
• Did You set down burn speed to x4 (I do)
And anything more that comes to Your mind - Please

Why does iDVD crash every time

I am using iDVD 7.1 (1145) on my iMac (OSX 10.6.5 / 8GB). I can start iDVD, create a new project and select a theme, but as soon as I click the media button in iDVD the program quits. Nothing else appears to be affected. The same version of iDVD runs just fine on my MacBook Pro.

Try trashing iDVD's Preference file.
Close iDVD.
Locate the file via YourHomeFolder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the the trash. iDVD will create a new one when you relaunch it.
Reopen iDVD.
See if it works now.

IDVD crash in middle of creation

I have a project created in imovie that got transferred to idvd. It is a fairly big movie so I opted to burn a double layer disc. After the audio is encoded (which takes quite a long time), it prepares to burn the disc, then ejects the disc before any burning is done, and idvd hangs. I must force quite to end the program. This happens several times, I keep restarting, then finally it burns one copy. When I try again, same crashing happens. The copy that was burnt sucessfully has some quality issues near the end of the dvd. Any ideas why the program crashes before the burn?

How long this iDVD (in hrs/mins.)? And how much available hard drive space is showing on your main HD / startup volume?
Did you try making a disc image first onto the desktop and then burning at 4x or slower to DVD-R? I recommend Verbatim /Maxell DVD-R. Try using roxio toast to lower the burn speed in this situation since apple's disc utilities may sometimes pose 2nd layer transition point issues when burning a DL image. However, Toast doesn't have this same issue.
also suggest using apple's DVD Player to test playback of the image prior to actually burning the image to DVD.

Whenever i try to import images from iphoto to idvd, idvd crashes! have deleted cache play lists for both and deleted in preferences - makes no difference

When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available. That's the second file you're getting.
You're not trying to use iPhoto and Aperture together are you? It's a waste of time and a cause of some frustration. Aperture is a complete replacement for iphoto, and you're really better off picking one horse to ride and forget about the other. Like iphoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager and post processor - but rather more powerful. Both apps are database driven. Aperture is not an "editing package".
If you do opt to stay with iPhoto then use an editor like Photoshop, Elements, Acorn, Pixelmator etc as your editng package.

IDVD crashing upon encoding assets

Hi,
I have scanned all sorts of forums and have not been able to find the answer needed to fix the following problem. During burning a DVD, iDVD crashes when it encodes assets.
I have 50GB left on my HD, did permissions repair, rebooting computer, changing quality settings, deleted the iDVD plist file and nothing works. I have tried burning to DMG, and Video_TS file. Same goes. Some of my assets on the film are HD, but this never stopped it from burning before.
Can anyone give me any advice or share a solution to this problem?

You bring up a good point. The project was shot in XDCAM 25fps. After postproduction, the file became APRHQ. Due to the weight of the file on export (about 5 GB), I decided to export it through Quicktime conversion as NTSC SD Widescreen. The video weighed about 1.06 GB, so I decided to use it.
I looked at when it quit during the encoding process (during encoding another asset), so I saved that as a last reserve option.
The DVD burned with the original APRHQ file, but now the question: Why would it not accept the QT converted SD export?

I have always found spell check to be "buggy" in every version of all of the iOS's that I have run on my original model iPad and my new iPad - especially when replying and typing posts in these forums. It works perfectly in every other application on my iPad but it has never worked perfectly in any web browser that I have used on my iPad - no matter what I have done to try to correct it. That is what MY experience has been with spell check on my iPads.
As for the crashes on your iPad try these basic troubleshooting steps.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit all apps and restart. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
/private/var/run/StartupItems
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchDaemons
Open Console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & next startup for clues.

i hate itunes so much! i tried to download some tunes and the files were corrupted on apples end, it wouldnt let me download them, it kept giving me errors. then you know what happened, itunes lost my whole library, then you know what happened, all my prefrences for all my applications suddenly disappreared. i have no bookmarks, no email settings, nothing. im sooooo ****** off right now its not even funny.
why did the crash of itunes screw up my whole computer? and what can i do to bring it back to the way it was before itunes blew it up?
this is unacceptable. because of this, i will never buy anythig from itunes store again.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. However, I wonder if iTunes screwed up your computer? Perhaps there's another, core issue with your Hard Disk? Have you run any Hardware Diagnostics?

Why premiere CS% crashes opening project and in encore

I have 12gb ram- CPU-I-7, NVIDIA 5000 plus graphics card, asus 58P motherboard.
I have a 2 hour project on my time line. When I open the project, the system crashes and about 5 minutes later works fine. I now want to export the timeline to Encore to make a dvd menu. Encore imports(dynamic Link) the sequence and at the 50% mark, crashes.but does not want to open. I have no idea why systems are crashing. I have not rendered the sequence in premiere pro as I don't know if I need to when going to encore. Comments would be appreciated.

The symptoms you decribe, white screen, the beachball, the not-responding message and the media pending message all are indicative of a Windows problem. Probably you will encounter the same problem when for instance you have 5 large (2+ MB) .HTML files open in Dreamweaver and those files have been modified enternally and need to be reloaded, especially in split mode.
It boils down to the fact that when opening your project, PR needs to get all those files from disk, or at least the indexed and conformed files into memory, as well as the .PEK files and while it is waiting for that to happen, it shows the media pending message. Windows itself is usually in a hurry to show the not-responding message, while it is waiting to finish a requested task, even when it is responding, albeit slowly.
My guess is that you haven't tuned your system yet, see Adobe Forums: Guide for installing and tuning a Vista... which also applies to Win7 and your disk setup may be lacking the necessary speed. After following the tuning steps, you can try to delete the media cache and then reopen your project. It will index and conform your clips again, so be a little bit patient for that process to finish.

Have been having problem when burning dvd, burns so far than quits & notice idvd crash
do not understand what the message means is happening with every dvd burn attempt
Also need to know how to send idvd project to trash / delete when done with it

I had the same problem until I realized I was editing in HD after years of editing Standard DVD video. My hard drive was formated for 32bit and can only record up to 4 GB per file. I had to take one of my hard drives and reformat it to the journal setting so there are no blocks which leaves the entire hard drive of a 2TB unit to record those unbeleavable HD movies. The mov I was trying to take to IDVD was 26GB and it recoreded all the way this time. I DVD will automatically dreduce it to fit on a standard DVD.
Whats rediculous is that every one records in HD now because they can but give little thought as to how its going to be edited. Standard DVD looks great when played on a blue ray and no professionals dont want to pay the extra fee to edit and take it to blue ray as many people dont have Blue ray yet.
Other problems can also stop your recording like a bad still photo file or one that is still in a raw state and not formated.

OK, I'm new to iDVD but here goes....iDVD crashed 4x typically just after reviewing the current changes and trying to add media from iTunes (after reviewing the DVD). Therefore I just avoided doing that again to get around it. But this is a bit of a pain especially if you wanted to change anything! However, what really ground my gears was after burning a trial DVD I ended with no menu page whatsoever. Oddly, everything played as it should, I just had no menu to select anything from. Would anyone care to hazzard an explanation and or solution?

Keep your iDVD project file here: User/Documents. Don't store it on an external drive. You can store video on the externals. Still images might be better for you on the internal. This is to keep the internal with 20+GB free space in the future.

THAT may be your problem.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility. You can set burn speed in iDVD '08 if not creating a disc image.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his iDVD 6 book:

I think this is done by the browser when it is saving a temporary file and there's already a file with that exact name in the temp folder.

Safari started behaving weird with very high CPU usage, then it refused to start up altogether, it doesn't even reach the safari icon when it crashes.
Did repair disk permissions. No good.
Around the same day i also lost the connection with my TimeMachine drive (third time this year). I've had it with timemachine.
