Why is Illustrator blurring the edges of hard shapes?

These are the same shapes, the one on the left is at 100% and on the right zoomed in. Why does it look so blurry at 100%? I need to export to web and it's screwing up the edges of my image.

Your artwork is not aligned with the pixel grid.

  • Blurring the edges of a "filled" shape

I am not sure how to accomplish this.... I have to add shapes with lower opacity on occasio to help text jump out; but would really like to treat the edges maybe blurring them, or something rather than the straight line. Any advise?
    Thanks!

To blur the edges on a shape:
    1) Select the Rectangular Marquee tool. Create a square in the shape letting enough space free for the blur
    2) Go to Select > Feather and use a setting of 10 pixels or so then click on OK.
    3) Select inverse.
    4) Cut selection.
If you want the text to pop out here are some other things to try.
    1) Use Inner and Outer Shadows
    2) Use a Pillow Emboss
    3) Use a Blurred Stroke (I did this by creating a layer for the Stroke and Blurring it with blurring the text)
Edited: Sorry I misread this at first.

  • I am new to this program and want to know how to blur the edges of a pic

i am new to the program and want to know how to blur the edges of a pic?

    Another way...
Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to draw out the edge to be blurred. Feather the selection. Here I feathered 50 px (note that feathering makes the borders of the selection appear rounded).
Invert the selection so that the edge is now selected, and apply a Gaussian Blur:
The reason for feathering is to soften the edge of the blur. The amount of feathering and amount of the Gaussian Blur is simply trial-and-error.

  • Why is "guassian blur" the one and only filter when exporting?

In the export thing, there is a "filters" thing, and the only available thing is "guassian blur". There must be a reason for this. Why have filters at this point? And why guassian blur? Is this some kind of much-needed feature? To blur everything in the last moment? I don't get it. What's the purpose of that?
Also, a bonus question: wasn't today (17th) when you are supposed to be able to download the trials of the new CC apps?

    From the help file:
The Gaussian Blur effect softens the image and eliminates noise. Adobe Media Encoder applies the Gaussian Blur effect as a pre-encoding step. This step minimizes the noise that the encoder would otherwise have to encode. It results in quicker encoding and smaller output file sizes. Select the Output tab to preview the results of this effect.
My guess is that noisy video is usually fixed in the timeline, but maybe not?

  • Why is Illustrator filling the areas between the paths created by the pen tool?

First, I am very much a beginner with Illustrator (but have used other vector drawing programs) and always try to find the answer in the 531-page manual before bothering the community.  So my apologies for what is probably a beginner's mistake.
I am marking up a drawing I imported from a raster file and and have ran Image Trace.  I am trying to draw 2 perpendicular lines with the pen tool.  However, when I complete the second line, it immediately files the space between the two lines with a black triangle.  When I draw a square, same result - instead of a square formed by 4 lines with blank space in the middle, it fills the space with black.
Why would it do this?  Is there some setting that I need to turn off?  In the past, a pen line just drew a path and didn't create fills.
I am using Illustrator CC on Windows 8.1 (Surface Pro 2) if that's relevant to anything.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Buzz,
If i'm understanding correctly it sounds as though you have your colour applied to the fill instead of the stroke. All you have to do whilst having your shape selected or before you draw it is hit the arrow to the top right of that panel for it to switch to the stroke. Then click the white box with the red line through it for no fill in the areas you want no colour.
    I hope that helps!

  • How do I blur the edges of an adjustment layer (whose job is to subsequently blur an image)?

So I'm trying to create a sort of rocket blast that distorts the background behind it like a heat wave, but the particle blast, rendered separately from the physical rocket and background, needs to be blurred first before it can act as a mask for the effect. Can anyone help with this. Bear in mind that I am COMPLETELY new to the software. This is literally my first project ever using it, so I would very much appreciate if any answers were thorough and well-explained step-by-step. Thank you.

Using the Pen Tool -- or the Ellipse or Rectangle Tools, for that matter -- create a mask on the adjustment layer.  Open the Adjustment layer's Mask properties, adjust the feather to suit your taste.
And if that isn't basic enough for you, you don't have any business running AE.

  • How do you smooth the edges of an image

    Hi,
How do you smooth the edges of an image, like the question mark edges?
    Regards Peter

You could duplicate the image (Ctrl+J)
Then apply some blur (Filter >> Blur >>Gaussian Blur)
That will blur the whole image so apply a layer mask and invert (press Ctrl+I)
Set foreground color chip to white and select the brush and choose a very small diameter. Then brush gently over the edges to reveal the blur.
You can switch the color chip to black to undo a mistake then back to white to continue.
Alternatively simply select the blur tool from the tools pallet (keep pressing the R key to tab tool choices) and blur the edges as wanted. It’s a little more crude but will probably do the job.

  • Why my Illustrator CC is now very slow for opening a 2MB AI file (about 5 minutes), at the beginning (1 month ago) it was very fast (10 seconds).

Why my Illustrator CC is now very slow for opening a 2MB AI file (about 5 minutes), at the beginning (1 month ago) it was very fast (10 seconds).

Assuming that you system meets minimal requirements for CC, make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. By saying enough, I try not to cross 3/4 of its capacity but trivially saying, the more free space the better and the faster the drive the better (I've been considering an SSD drive but still running a regular HDD).
If you are on Windows, clean up the %TEMP% folder regularly and keep the disk neat using the defragmentation tool.
Click Start>Run>enter %temp% , wait for the files to load and select all, hit Shift+DEL to remove them permanently.
For the defrag tool, you can use either the defrag /? command from the command line or right-click the drive, click Properties > Tools > Defragmentation>Defragment Now
Other than that it requires deeper analysis to find performance bottleneck.

  • "Blur" effect results in hard edges

When I apply a "blur" effect to an object, it appears to be masked with a hard edge (in a square, regardless of the shape of the original object), slightly beyond the edges of the object itself. SEE SCREENSHOT HERE:
    http://i40.tinypic.com/1sf4n7.png
Can anybody tell me what's going on here?

    Mister,
A Blur Effect is a raster effect. All raster effects result in the creation of a raster image, even if they are recreated on-the-fly as you edit the objects to which they are applied. All raster images are rectangular.
As JC explained, the settings in your blur are causing the colored pixels in the raster image that is being generated to extend out to the edges of the rectangular image.
Be aware that the rectangular raster image of the "shadow" , and anything it interacts with transparently (colored objects behind it) will be flattened and rasterized into rectangular raster images when printed. Check your flattened artwork and print proofs for visible edges that can sometimes occur where the rectangular rasterized edges abut the portions of vector objects that do not get rasterized in this way.

  • My hard drive failed and during the setup of Illustrator CS4 on my new hard drive/pc, I was told I had reached the maximum number of licenses

My hard drive failed and during the setup of Illustrator CS4 on my new hard drive/pc, I was told that the maximum # of licenses for my serial number had been reached and so I am unable to install Illustrator on my working computer.  This happened a couple of years ago and I called Adobe and they were able to 'reset' things but I don't see any way to talk to someone now to resolve this problem.  BTW, I have the failed hard drive slaved in my new computer and am able to access files and such things, but have no way of uninstalling the Illustrator on my old drive.  How do I fix this issue?

Contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • Why am I getting the error message "Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains and incomplete or garbled object description."

I work in a graphic design firm and 4 separate people have received these messages on separate days using separate files on separate MAC computers. We are all using CS6.
"Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."
    "Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand. 1206.3.6006 % 1205.9736 1178.52 m % 1206.2236 1178.8374 I % 1206.3232 1178.% 1206.3.6006"

"Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains and incomplete or garbled object description."
After clicking ok the file will open; however, most of the illustration is missing. We are interested in repairing our files, but we are more interesting in figuring out why this is happening and fixing it. We are nervous to even open anything for fear this will happen again.
    Please help!

    brittanyesparks,
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    and another similar website,
    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
As far as I remember, the former is for Win and the latter for Mac.

  • Two PDF's - 1 created from Illustrator and the other Acrobat. Same colour is different in both. Why?

Two PDF's - 1 created from Illustrator and the other Acrobat. Same colour is presented differently in both pdf documents. Why?

Hi - sorry pressed send too quickly....
I have two PDF documents that show a sample business card in PDF.
One was apparently created through illustrator and is the focument for the printers ... it is this document that shows a completely different colour to the one that is in the other PDF that was apparently created in Acrobat. Though designers assure me that they are exactly the same patenone and that it's the software interpretting it.
What i dont understand is why the colours would look different using the software from the same company....and why designers would put up with this as a basic layman it just looks plain wrong to me.

  • In the app search, the selections are hard to move right to left why?

in the app search, the selections are hard to move right to left why?

I doubt it was either.  As I suggested the possiblity the two issues were related.  One of a number things could have been the cause, and the solution.
It took me several minutes to finalize my post in which during that time Apple could have very easilty got things back up and running.  The two issues could have been unrelated.
Chamar - tt also appears you posted a screen shot from the Mac App store.  The link I provided was specifically for the online "Apple Store"  - not "App" store.
And again, as it's been an issue in the past - I suggested the two issues may have been related;  it usually is, because your Apple ID is tied to "everything Apple" - Mac App store, iCloud, FaceTime, iTunes, Apple Store online, and even here, including the forums... "everythig Apple."
I even tried to get onto Apple Store online through the App on my iPhone.  I get the exact same screen shot I placed in my original post.  At any rate... everything is back up and running.

  • Is it possible to print a full page in Illustrator and bleed the art off of the edges of the paper?

Is it possible to bleed artwork off the edges of an 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper? I'm trying to print cards that are 2 up in landscape orientation and the art keeps  getting trimmed off an inch or so before the edge of the paper.
    RIchard

Have you checked your Page Tiling?  (View>Show Page Tiling)  The border that you see will show you how it prints.  But you can save your file as an Illustrator PDF and then open it with Adobe Reader and given that your printer is borderless . . . you can print to the edges.  But a bleed is something where your design extends beyond the edge of the finished product and you cut into the bleed, trimming off some of the art and leaving a smaller product than the original paper size.
