Why is illustrator converting to RGB when I don't want it to?

I am trying to use artboards to save several versions of a logo (8 different versions).  I was hoping to have all 8 versions in one document in both RGB and CMYK (so essentially 16 artboards). I'm gathering this is not possible because when I convert one logo to RGB then all of my other logos convert automatically to CMYK (except PMS versions, they remain accurate.)
I moved on and made 3 different documents, one for PMS, one for RGB, one for CMYK.
I started with the CMYK doc in CMYK Color Mode and converted my PMS colors to CMYK. No problem.
I did a Save As, set to RGB Color Mode, and started changing my colors over to RGB based on the conversion from the PMS.
At this point my CMYK Color Mode, separately saved file, converts all of its logos to RGB.
Is this a glitch or am doing something horribly wrong? I'm not at all new to illustrator, though I am relatively new to CS6. I thought artboards were going to be a Godsend for versioning logos but it seems I've wasted far more time trying to do it this way.
Can anybody help?

I did try that first. However, I've long since moved on from that. I'm talking I convert it in a file and it changes in a file that isn't even open. See below...

Furthermore, to be sure. I took my PMS document and made two new documents using the Save As (both directly from my PMS only document.) I closed all of the documents and converted them individually. I opened RGB first, set it to RGB color mode and converted from PMS to RGB. No problem. Did the same for the CMYK, except when I said "Recolor Artwork" instead of coloring to CMYK it colored to RGB so I used the swatch pallete which worked. Closed the document. Reopened all 3 documents. My RGB document has now converted itself to CMYK. It's like they're all linked together. Change one, change all.
I even made a test document with a CMYK circle in it, saved as into a new document. Closed the test doc, converted the circle to RGB. Reopened the test doc and the circle is RGB. I am totally baffled. I've also tried AI files instead of EPS, same thing.

  • Why does Illustrator CS5.5 crash when opening 1.5GB sized vector layered files on my iMac OS X?

Why does Illustrator CS5.5 crash when opening 1.5GB sized vector layered files on my iMac OS X?

1.5GB for a vector file is very large. If you can ever open this file would recomend  file >> save as >> turn off PDF compatibility.
Can you please tell us why your file is so large, you may have a problem such as deleted global swatches, or an exceptionally large number of items in your symbols, styles, brushes palette. For even the most complex illustration filling the entire 227.54" artboard, you should be under 20mb if you have no embedded or linked images.

  • Why Does Save As-PDF/A reduce file size when I don't want it to?

I scanned a 4-paged printed card with my Epson Perfection 4490 scanner in order to digitally archive it. Each page is about 5x7 inches, and I scanned at 100 percent. I scanned each page as an individual TIFF image file, at 600 samples per inch.
I brought each TIFF image file into Photoshop one at a time. I saved each TIFF as a JPEG, at Quality: 8, Baseline ("Standard").
Then, I brought the JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro to create a 4-paged PDF. Initially, the file size of the saved 4-paged PDF was 5 MB. (Later, I determined the individual JPEG's add up to 5.2 MB.) When saving as PDF/A, the final format that I want to use, the file size was unexpectedly reduced from 5 MB to 2.5 MB.
What is the reason for the file size being reduced to 2.5 MB? I had already done the compression that I wanted in Photoshop. The PDF was not downsampled. I purposely did not use Optimizer.
I did a test. This time, in Photoshop, I compressed each TIFF to JPEG, at Quality: 5, Baseline ("Standard"), the Medium setting instead of the High setting. After bringing these JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro, the saved 4-paged PDF was 2.8 MB in size, an expected smaller size. Saving as PDF/A produced a file of 2.6 MB in size, very close to the same size this time, possibly indicating it accepting the Medium quality level.
Apparently, saving as PDF/A reduces the quality level of JPEG's to Medium quality, when they are of higher quality to begin with. It seems to be designed to optimize even when I don't want it to.

Here's the Audit Space Usage for the original 5 MB file. It shows the images taking up the majority of the space, as expected:

  • Why am I always forced to upgrade Firefox when I don't want to?

I asked this question once b4, & never got a response. Probably because Firefox sucks royally, & they're afraid to answer my question. I'm always forced to upgrade Firefox when I don't want to. I get this stupid little pop-up for 1-4 days saying the new version is available. I ignore it, & without warning upon starting up my computer, Firefox upgrades itself. First of all, I F'ING H8 THAT! Second of all, I WANT TO MAKE THE BLOODY CHOICE WHETHER OR NOT I WANT ANOTHER SUBSTANDARD FIREFOX UPGRADE!! The ONLY reason I stay w/Firefox is that IE sucks even more, & you can't play any Facebook games w/IE. Firefox dev's, I realize I'm just an insignificant user & you don't really care about any of us, but really, must you force us to upgrade? Hmmm, I may just move on over to Chrome.

You can turn off automatic updates, for details see the "Configuring update options" section of this article - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Updating+Firefox
Turning off automatic updates in Chrome is not as easy, it involved editing the registry.

  • How can I prevent Magic Mouse from scrolling horizontally when I don't want it to?

I recently purchased a Magic Mouse to go with OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. It's a great mouse but it causes 2 problems:
If I leave it on "Scroll with interia" in System Preferences/Mouse, it scrolls horizontally when I don't want it to.  Since I mostly work in Word documents, I often lose my place in the document this way. On the other hand, checking "Scroll without inertia" makes vertical scrolling, which I do all the time, a lot harder.
The mouse seems to cause what I think of as "fractures" in Word documents--words and parts of sentences will disappear or get crunched together , then reappear when I select the place where they vanished.  They also reappear if I scroll vertically to get the problem area off the screen and then return to it. This wastes a lot of time at best; at worst, I'm afraid I'll lose work.  The problem occurred once in a while with a Logitech bluetooth mouse I was using, but not as bad and not all the time.
I love the mouse's ergonomics and would like to keep it, but if I can't solve this problem, I'll have to return it.  Would be very, very grateful for any tips!  Thanks.

Always nervous about recommending sites I have no personal experience of.  On the plus side it doesn't relate to any of the bad sites I am familiar with and it appears to be the developer's site ... but there is no contact point for you to ask questions.  You said in your initial post it was to go with Snow Leopard but this version says it is meant for 10.7 and above.   Did you notice that?   I also notice several other references to Word and mouse and one person found the solution lay in the updating of word 2011 to its highest level.   I can offer no more.

I am using a table in Numbers to plot daily graph lines. Mood swings of how I am on the day, i"m a depressive.
If I fill a cell with a step box at say zero it plots the graph. I can't actually set the cell value until the actual day but the graph plots it at zero when I don't want it to plot anything. Is there a work around. so thatbgraph only plots on the day?

The answer is (sort of) in your subject, but edited out of the problem statement in the body of your message.
When you use a stepper or a slider, the value in the cell is always numeric, and is always placed on the chart if that cell is included in the range graphed by the chart.
But if you use a pop-up menu cell, you can specify numeric or text values in the list of choices for in the menu. Numeric values will be shown on the chart. Text values will not.
For the example, the values list for the pop-up menu was:
    5
    3
    1
    Choose
    -1
    -3
    -5
The first pop-up was set to display Choose, then the cell was filled down the rest of the column. Any text value (including a single space, if you want the cell to appear blank) may be used instead of Choose.
For charts with negative Y values, the X axis will not automatically appear at Y=0. If your value set will include negative values, I would suggest setting the Y axis maximum and minimum to the maximum and minimum values on your menu list, rather than letting Numbers decide what range to include on the chart. Place a line shape across the chart at the zero level, and choose to NOT show the X axis.

  • How do I stop the screen from magnifying or zooming in when I don't want it to?

The screen keeps enlarging when I don't want it to.  How can I turn off this function in Lion?

There are a few ways to get the screen to "enlarge", so it depends on what you are doing to make it happen.
For example, on a trackpad you can double-tap (not click) with two fingers to zoom in web pages.  Or you can slide two fingers in a spreading out fashion to zoom in.
Do you have any notion about what you are doing when the undesired enlarging occurs?

My wifi keeps coming on when i don't want it to. How do i disable it and keep it off?

    kcquestions,
That's a very good question! It's important to be on the network you want to be on. How are you turning the wi-fi off? If you go into your settings there should be a wi-fi switch as the second option from the top. If we turn it off there it shouldn't come back on until you tell it to. If you select that and press the menu button (3 dots in the top right corner) you can also turn off "Allow wi-fi scanning" which can help not get notified of them when wi-fi is off.

  • Why does Illustrator automatically change RGB and CMYK values

Hi, I am struggling to understand why Illustrator is changing the values inside the RGB and CMYK boxes. I am also not sure of the exact relationship between these values. Essentially, it appears that if you set the Document Color Mode to RGB, it leaves the RGB values that you type in alone. If you set the Document Color Mode to CMYK, it leaves the CMYK values alone.
But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
The other thing I am confused about is the relationship of the values in the RGB boxes to the values in the CMYK boxes. I would have thought that the relationship between them would be static. Actually, it is not. When I am in CMYK mode and I enter a CMYK value of 90 16 0 0, the RGB values become 0 158 222. But when I switch over to RGB mode, the RGB values of 0 158 222 result in CMYK values of 75 23 0 0.
    Very confusing.
Thanks in advance if you can explain this behavior!

    Color management.
An Ai document can be either RGB or CMYK. The colors follow the document color mode and thus are converted immediately if they don't match.
But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
    Same reason.
I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
It's not. CMYK color spaces (there are more than just one) are normally smaller than RGB color spaces, but they aren't a "subset".
When Illustrator converts the colors, it uses color management: the profiles you set up and the methods you set up. After converting it forgets the color that used to be. When converting "back", it uses color management again.
When you convert an very bright RGB color, it be out of the CMYK gamut. So it get's converted to the closest possbile CMYK color (which might still be far away from the original color. But it's not possible to convert it "back" to the bright one unless you just revert the conversion (by Cmd/Ctrl + Z).

  • Why is illustrator converting pantone to CMYK/paler colors?

    Hello,
I have been working on the graphic design of a tin top for some time now, and just now came across this problem this morning.  I have been working entirely in RGB since I began so that I could utilize a full range of colors.  Recently, I found out that the company that is manufacturing the tin is able to print in Pantone solid coated.  I then decided to convert the tin design to RGB colors that match colors in the Pantone solid coated color book.  This worked for quite some time without any problem; i was able to design the tin using a vibrant green, red, orange, and purple.  This morning, I went to save my most recent document - i have created multiple documents using the same colors with slight design variations - and the only thing that was different about this document was that the red tone i used came directly from the pantone solid coated color swatch palette.  When i went to save the document, a message came up that read "when spot colors are used with transparency, changing them to process colors outside of illustrator can generate unexpected results." After that, i don't know what happened.  Aside from the original design, which has the vibrant green, i am unable to duplicate the green using the color palette.  It automatically converts to a paler, ugly green.  As with CMYK, there now many shades that I cannot seem to use because the shade is deemed 'out of gamut'. This problem seems to apply to many of the colors i have been using, primarily green tones.  I have checked, and all my color settings are still RGB, even though the color palette seems to be acting as though it is in CMYK.  When i select the vibrant green using the eyedropper, it immediately appears paler when i try to access it from the color picker. Also, whenever i save my current tin... the one that still appears with the vibrant green in illustrator... it appears as the paler green as a jpeg and pdf (unless i look at the file in acrobat pro, then the vibrant green is retained.)  I don't know what is going on, and am wondering how to get back to my old settings so that I can work with a full range of colors. What surprised me was that I haven't run into this problem before and I have been working with these colors for many weeks...  It is also putting these restrictions on all my older documents as well as newly created ones.  Any advice would be much appreciated...
    Thanks!

I will clarify by taking some screenshots...
Shot 1: This is what the tin should look like, and has looked like as I have been working with it.  All the colors are RGB colors.  Notice that the green of the tin is the same green that appears in the lower left of the screen on the menu. It is R102 G189 B41.
Shot 2: Now, when I double click on the color picker while it is still in the exact same color as shot 2, you will notice that the color picker immediately identifies it as a darker, paler green, even though it claims the RGB value is still R102 G189 B41.
Notice that the green in the little circle is the same green on the tin, while the green in the two boxes by 'OK' and 'Cancel' are the different green... the same way that Illustrator converts color to the nearest CMYK value.  Because I am in RGB, i don't understand why this value is changed.
Shot 3: Now, when i save the file as a jpeg or pdf, when i view the jpeg on my computer or as a pdf in adobe acrobat pro, the green appears at it should.  However, when i view  either the pdf or the jpeg on another computer,  it appears as the altered green.
Hope this helps clarify the problem... Another interesting thing i noticed... The pantone color 368c looks different according to illustrator than it does for photoshop.  In photoshop, it is considered the exact same vibrant green as my tin, while in illustrator it is much closer to the green in shot 3.  Do you know what accounts for this difference?

  • Why summaries are converted to character when exported to excel??

    Hi,
When i export my discoverer workbooks to excel, all of my summaries are converted to character type and excel gives error messages for each cell and asks to convert them back to numbers. Its not possible to do so because Discoverer plus is a client tool and no client would prefer rework. They'll simply say why to use Discoverer then?
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks.

Using Acrobat DC and the acrobat arrow tool. By right clicking on an image a submenu pops up. One of the items in that list is "Edit Image".  Ordinarily or historically this would then open the image in Photoshop as a temp file. Edits could be made and saved and the image would be auto updated back into the PDF.  In DC when selecting edit image, the document goes into a edit mode and the entire file gets converted into RGB color.  From here one could again right click on the same image and get the option to edit using another program, (like photoshop).  When returning back to document mode, the RGB conversion remains.
I determine the files are converted to RGB by using the inspector tool in Acrobat as well as looking at the colorspace in Photoshop
I determined the files were CMYK by building them that way and again verifying using Pitstop inspector.
Following screen grabs show image before / and after selecting "Edit Image"

  • Acrobat grayscale images editied in photoshop convert to rgb when brought back into the pdf file.

After I edit a photo using the object touch up tool in photoshop CS6 and bring it back into acrobat as a grayscale halftone all works fine till I print. It prints on multiple plates. When I edit it again in photoshop the halftone has turned into RGB. It happens every time. I assume there is a color setting in acrobat that is doing the conversion from grayscale to RGB but I don't know where to look. This has worked fine for years and has only recently stopped working. By the way I'm using acrobat pro.

It's really necessary to know by which program you had created the PDF.
Here comes a test PDF for questions like yours, created by InDesign:
    http://docs-hoffmann.de/riptest05072013.pdf
    Different images:
sRGB, pRGB=ProphotoRGB, CMYK , all with individually embedded profile,
Grayscales: without embedded profiles, because InDesign doesn't embed gray profiles,
Lab: without profile, because Lab is automatically detected and not ambiguuos.
Of course, using so many different images in one PDF is useful only for tests.
    An actual test:
Touch Up Object Grayscale and edit in Photoshop. There is no embedded profile
but the image is in PS detected as Grayscale. One has to assign a profile.
Re-imported in the doc, it is a Grayscale JPEG*, before it was a Grayscale ZIP.
In Acrobat 8 one can check the actual content of a PDF by
Advanced > Print Production > Preflight
In newer versions this is still available but somewhere else.
I'm using version 8, because I uninstalled X on purpose.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
    *Edited:
As far as I remember, there is no special code for Grayscale JPEGs, it's just a JPEG
with zeros in the Cb Cr channels ... like an R=G=B gray image.
