Why is iMac being dropped as a shared volume?

I have a 21.5" iMac 2.5GHz mid 2011, 12GB ram running Lion 10.7.4.
It is connected via ethernet to a gen 5 Airport Extreme, so Airport on the iMac is off. I am also running a MBP .
Both are on iCloud Back-to-My-Mac. When the iMac is awake, it shows up on the MBP as a shared volume. After it goes to sleep, it disappears as a shared volume. Wake for network activity is checked on the iMac.
I don't remember having this problem before. The only thing I have changed is that I had been using a 1st gen Airport Extreme and upgraded to this 5th gen.
I've checked everything I can think of but the problem persists.
Anyone have any thoughts as to why the iMac keeps disappearing?

I figured it out-  it must be the printer.
OK, here's another question.  Ever since I installed Lion, Flash Player doesn't work at all.  I've reinstalled it, de-installed it, changed settings, reinstalled again, numerous times.  Nothing works.  What am I doing wrong?

  • Styles being dropped on network shared folder files in Dreamweaver CS5.5

Hello, apoligies if this has already been solved but I could not find anything similar. Recently we have upgraded our staff from Dreamweaver CS4 to CS5.5 and are having some issues with pages dropping the stylesheets which are linked relatively. The relative files are located on a shared network drive which is mapped in Windows 7 as a drive (e.g. My Computer shows the drive as R:).
In Dreamweaver design view up the top it reads:
    Address: file:///R|/acrrm/tinnitus/course_content/001.html
and there is a yellow bar up the top which reads:
'common_styles.css' is a remote file and cannot be edited.
We never had this issue before so I was wondering if it was a new limitation of CS5.5 or if there was something I should look out for in the site definition.
Interestingly enough I was able to fix this on one machine by randomly toggling the live code/view buttons, havent had any luck doing that to other machines though.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Here are the specs:
    O.S: Windows 7
    Version: Dreamweaver CS5.5
    Site Definition: Network shared drive

Interestingly enough I was able to fix this on one machine by randomly toggling the live code/view buttons, havent had any luck doing that to other machines though.
I would have to say that this operation could not possibly fix anything.  I suspect that simply waiting the same amount of time as this operation required would have returned the same result, and it sounds like there is some latency in your network.
Your site is entirely contained on a network shared drive, right?  Or is it that only SOME files are on the network shared drive (R:)?  Also, where is it you are seeing this?
    Address: file:///R|/acrrm/tinnitus/course_content/001.html

  • Why is my Wifi dropping on iMac but not other Apple devices?

I am trying to figure out why my iMac constantly drops the Wifi connection.  My router is new and only a couple feet from my iMac.  My husband's macbook pro does not drop the Wifi connection.  Usually, the Wifi connection is lost for a matter of seconds or minutes and reconnects without me doing anything.  My Wifi works at lightning speed when it is connected but drops off several times a day and sometimes multiple times an hour.  This is so frustrating!

    WiFi Problems:
Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always. In no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion and possibly Mavericks:

  • Why should you explicitly open and close shared variable connections?

I'm looking into switching over from the old Datasocket API to the new Shared Variable API for programmatic access to shared variables, and I noticed that LV doesn't seem to have any problems executing Shared Variable Reads & Writes without first opening the connection explicitly. That is, I can just drop in a shared varaible Read VI, wire a constant to the refnum input, and it will work. I'm wondering, then, what benefits are offered by explicitly opening the conenction ahead of time...?
I guess I could see some cases where you want to open all necessary connections in an initialization state of a top-level state machine, particularly if you want to use the "Open & Verify Connection"---so you could jump straight to an error case if any connections fail. But other than that, why else might one want to explicitly open the connections.
And, along those lines, are there any problems with implicitly opening the connections? One reason why I am hesitant to open them explicitly is because for one of our applications, we need to be able to dynamically switch from one variable to another at runtime. It would be nice to just switch the variable refnum (wired to the input of the Read function), without having to manually close out the old connection and open a new one. A quick prototype of this seems to work. But am I shooting myself in the foot by doing so?
    Thanks in advance.

I'd expect there's a very small number of people at NI that would know the answer to the detail you're asking for.  But, let's try to extrapolate from this rather old post to see if we can understand what they're forming their impression on.
The shared variable has to have some sort of reference going on in the background.  It looks like they're calling this a connection.  It's how LabVIEW knows where to find this variable on the network.  We can also see this reference certainly exists if we're opening/closing the reference in the explicit method.  You see the connection as just a string referencing the variable by URL.  This "reference" has to be stored somewhere.  No matter how we're looking at this, we're aware there's a reference of some sort stored.
Now, we'd want to look at what would cause this reference to go away.  If you open/close explicitly, it's easy to see it goes away at the close.  If it's implicit, when would it make sense to close it out?  The VI can't be expected to guess where it's done being referenced and close it out.  This puts us into a situation where the soonest it could close is when the VI ends.  From my experience, references tend to be wiped when you close out LabVIEW.  It's this kind of idea that makes the FGV possible.  I wouldn't be surprised by Morgan's claim here.
If we look at scalability, you're talking about two different topics.  You're talking about adding an extra open, close, read, etc rather than just a few wires.  That certainly would look a mess.  In terms of the dynamic swap that was being discussed, we wouldn't be adding all of those.  The concern would be if enough connections were opened it'd start to behave similar to a memory leak.  This could be something that works with a smaller number of variables.  If you continue to scale, it becomes problematic.  This is why they suggest it's not scalable.
    To your questions:
Does LV allocate some kind of session in memory using that string as a lookup?
It would HAVE to allocate some memory to hold that string.  Otherwise, it'd be pointless to even have the reference.
Does it reuse that session if other parts of the application reference the same variable, or does it create a unique session for each referencing call to "Read Variable.vi"?
I would expect this to be "it depends."  With the implicit method, I would expect it to open a new reference in each point it isn't wired.  This is similar to int x,y = 5;  x and y share the same value but are their own unique memory location.  If you wire the reference to the other points, it should use the same reference.  This would make more sense to me than the program seeking out any other potential usage of the variable in the application to see if there's already a reference open.  I could be wrong, though.
And what resources does this "connection" actually represent?
At best, this is just the string.  At worst, it's the string and the TCP socket.  I'd lean towards the first.  Opening and closing sockets should be relatively easy in most applications.  But, it also wouldn't surprise me if it holds the socket.
I'm sure others have a better understanding than I do.  But, that's what I'd expect for anything you've asked.

  • My new iMac continually drops wireless signal

Anyone having issues with their imac continually dropping the wireless connection?

Well the solution was short lived and after leaving the laptop in sleep mode for a couple of hours the problem was back. Originally I was told to copy my system configuration folder ontop the desktop and restart my computer. With this only being a short term fix I called back again this afternoon and I was walked through setting up a new location which included adding 2 dns server addresses (208.67.220.220 & 298.67.222.222). Once again this was a short term fix. The next step I was advised was to change the channel of my rotuer. According to the apple advisor they have some reported sucess with users changing the router channel from automatic or 1 to either 6, 9 or 11. I've just changed mine to 9 and after resetting the router and laptop it seems to be working again (longer than it normally lasts). If this fails I guess I will try changing the router to the other channels suggested and if that doesnt work the next piece of advice was to re-install the OS. Interestingly a friend bought the same mac book pro as me and his is working perfectly fine even when sharing the same connection. Very fustrating! Good Luck.

  • Community - My iMac keeps dropping and instantly resetting my wifi connection

Hey folks - I know a lot of people have been complaining about desktop issues and wifi connectivity, but this seems to be quite the variant from other folks' problems...
Every 2-20 minutes, my iMac is dropping, then instantly resetting my wifi connection. The actual wifi drop lasts no longer than 5 seconds, and instantly reconnects itself with no input from me... the problem is it completely interrupts any downloading, streaming, gaming, or anything else I might be doing that requires a constant internet connection. It seems to drop off just long enough to stop the connection, then it resets all on it's own.
I'm currently using a mid-2011 27 inch iMac intel core i5 3.1 ghz processor w/ OS X Lion 10.7.3. I have a Linksys router and a GCI issued modem, unsure of the brand as there are minimal markings on it. The internet/tv service (run by GCI) is smooth throughout the rest of my home, and no other items we own connected to the net seem to have the same problem...
I have tried soft resets on both the modem and router. I have restarted my machine several times and re-added the network location and wifi connection to my computer. I have unplugged both modem and router to let those reset and have unplugged and reconnected my coax cable for several minutes as well. No time of day seems to work well, and it's becoming quite difficult to work and do other fun functions like stream television or game.
Any help here would be super appreciated, and I need to warn folks right away that I am NOT very tech savvy, so any kind of messing with DNS or other what I would call 'advanced' settings may be tough :O Thanks and cheers!
    -Monty

Hi Monty, I know you're not tech savvy but if you can get an 802.11n router your iMac would be able to take advantage of the less crowded 5 GHz spectrum. The Linksys ought to have some markings on it which you could look up to determine if it is 802.11n capable or not.
The symptoms you describe are consistent with wireless interference. The ability to use 802.11n in lieu of the older 802.11g your Linksys router is probably using is one way to mitigate its effects.
The Apple AirPort Extreme base station and the Time Capsule can both create two simultaneous wireless networks: a fast 5 GHz one for your iMac, and a 2.4 GHz one for other devices.
I do not know why your iMac drops off and on but that may be one consideration.

  • IMAC keeps dropping the internet connection using Wi-Fi.

iMAC keeps dropping internect connection when using wi-fi.

Best way ti fix it !
iMac and MacBooks have the  ( PHY Mode:    802.11n ) as standard
there not supporting 802.11g or other types
    what you need to do
go About this Mac  > More Info... > Overview > Than > System Report..
Than from the lest under Network - Wi-Fi
you will get report about your network Interfaces ,
    your router name here  :
      PHY Mode:    802.11n
      BSSID:    bc:76:70:5d:c6:a7
      Channel:    7
      Country Code:
      Network Type:    Infrastructure
      Security:    WPA2 Personal
      Signal / Noise:    -74 dBm / -101 dBm
      Transmit Rate:    52
make sure that your router setting on your router match the machine
in example the router set on : Mode:    802.11n only !
    and Security:    WPA2 Personal
after that you mac will work faster and smooth
    why is that happened ?
when your router set in auto mode , if any other pc or laptop join the network the router will change the mode from 802.11n than your mac will lose the connection setting and you will need to refresh the network
agin and agin and agin .
make sure you buy good router that support 802.11n
very easy job takes me 1 year for find it and no one have the right answer on the net

  • Why is verizon being so stupid not updating icon to 8.1?

why is verizon being so stupid not updating icon to 8.1?

The update from Microsoft was already released to Verizon. Verizon is still testing 8.1 Cyan. This update is already active on AT&T.
Yes, there ARE many threads on this already. It is encouraging to see so many WP fans chomping at the bit to see this exciting update.
The WP line may be a comparably "low selling device," but considering several million have been purchased and are in use, it's not just a drop in the bucket.
Verizon has one of the most robust networks in the world. They need to ensure that all phones function appropriately on their network prior to a mass release. This update is not a small tweak; Microsoft and Verizon both receive feedback from developers and beta testers during the testing phase. Though I'm just as excited to receive the update, I'm glad they are taking their time to get it right.
Another consideration is marketing. With the new HTC out, it makes more sense to push a new phone with Cyan baked in, wait a couple weeks, then release Cyan to the rest.

  • My items haven't sold so why am I being invoiced yet? I haven't rec'd payment for 2 items that sold!

I don't understand why I am being invoiced when my items have not sold. I am only allowed 10 items listing in a month and only 2 items have sold for a total of $26 Canadian. I haven't even received my money yet as you/PayPal makes me wait 30 days at least to receive it. I thought the fees were deducted from the monies the items sell for when they are sold. I assumed that is what I was being charged. How would I know how much my buyer paid for an item when the monies are transferred to Canadian funds? There is nowhere that says he offered $30 but with dollar difference it would only be $26 for example. I got a best an offer or buy right away price of $26.44 from my buyer but how would I know what he actually offered and that fees were not included? I thought he was paying $30 and the difference was the fees. I have't even received my funds from PayPal yet and there isn't enough money in my bank account for them to withdraw the funds. I thought I read through the rules of EBay but so many suprises popped up when listing and now without selling.

2 items have sold for a total of $26 Canadian. There are listing fees (30 cents and item or less , usually)Selling fees of around 9% of selling price (depending on category)Fees on your shipping charges (also around 9% of the fee) Separately and immediately on receipt you are charged by Paypal for the use of their service. Minimum of 30 cents and/or 9% of the total payment. Allow about 20% of the payment you receive (eventually) from your customer for your various fees. I haven't even received my money yet as you/PayPal makes me wait 30 days at least to receive it.Actually 21 days from the time the customer's payment is cleared. If he pays from his bank account rather than a credit card, this can add up to 10 days to the clearance. This is a Buyer Protection policy meant to protect customers against 'take the money and run' scammers. You can use the Held funds to buy PP shipping labels at a 5% to 18% discount off PO counter prices, which is a small benefit. You cannot buy labels until the customer's payment clears, which is a little protection for you agains bad 'e-cheques'. How would I know how much my buyer paid for an item when the monies are transferred to Canadian funds? If you list in CDN funds, and I understand that new sellers are being defaulted to the shorter Sell Your Item form that only allows CDN dollar listings, your customers will see your prices in both their own currency and in CDN.Pick a US seller, and  check her listings on eBayCanada. See how both currencies appear? Now look at one of your own listings on eBaydotCOM. See how both currencies appear?  Here's the part that many find hard to understand. When you buy currency it will cost you more than when you sell the same amount back to the bank.And.Foreign exchange rates vary widely from institution on to institution. And from hour to hour.Treat the foreign currency as an approximation. Keep your books in one currency. There is nowhere that says he offered $30 but with dollar difference it would only be $26 for example.Oh for heaven's sakes! It's been in every newspaper and newscast for months. The bottom dropped out of oil and the Harper Government had been heavily invested in oil.Keystone Pipeline ring any bells? It is not the fault of eBay that you don't know what is going on in the Canadian or world economy. That is something grownups do. There is nowhere that says he offered $30 but with dollar difference it would only be $26 for example. I got a best an offer or buy right away price of $26.44 from my buyer but how would I know what he actually offered and that fees were not included? I thought he was paying $30 and the difference was the fees. I can't even parse that sentence. Is it hypothetical or based on an actual transaction? The amount your buyer pays will be on your Sold list. Both the price and the shipping will appear there. The currency will be noted. In your case since you sell in CDN dollars, it will be recorded in CDN dollars. Your buyer may be paying in Euros or yen or remibi or US dollars, but you will still see it in CDN.If you are not sure what currency the offer is made in, ask your customer. US customers in particular are shockingly unaware that some sellers are not in the States.Oh, an offer can never include changes to the shipping fee. Never. When you make a sale the various eBay and PP fees will be taken from the gross. EBay fees are due once a month. This is from the date you sign up. If you signed up on July 20, your eBay bill comes due on August 20. However, you get a notice about two weeks earlier. You can pay on receipt or wait and eBay will remove it automatically from your PP account. PP fees are taken immediately from your customer's payment and you are credited with the remainder. This can be seen on your PP account.

  • Why am I being asked to authenticate for example when dragging a picture from an email to my desktop?  Can this be turned off?  It started with Lion

Why am I being asked to authenticate by entering my password when for example dragging a picture from an email to my desktop?  This started with Lion.  Is there a way to turn it off?  Thanks,

I found that right clicking on my hard drive, Get Info and under Sharing & Permissions when the Privilege was changed to Read & Write, the authentication pop ups stopped and I could drag pictures to my desktop and save attachments there also.  Now my hubby and I will investigate the Names under S&P.  We know one is System, another is him sharing.  There is a third that says everyone so it will be the main one we research.  I get the basics of what they are - to secure folders etc. from someone getting into my computer.  I'm sure this is a pretty basic description of the issue so I guess if you read this and try any of this to stop the authentication, you should make sure you know what and why.

  • Why am I being charged for data when connected to wifi AND not using my phone?!

WHY am I being charged for data that I'm not using? At times when I'm asleep AND my phone is connected to wifi?!  This happens at really specific, alternating times like 9:54 pm every day, or 12:01 am, 6:01 am and then 12:01pm and 6:01pm. When I called I was told  "maybe your wifi at home is disconnecting" or "maybe your phone is connecting to atnt or sprint". It's not possible that my phone is disconnecting from wifi every six hours on the dot and, at that exact time, I'm always using data. I find it hard to believe that I live in a HUGE city and my phone magically connects to other networks and I NEVER notice this. Verizon is full of LIARS (and maybe’s) and I'm not convinced that these data charges are a coincidence. I was told to turn off my cellular data to see if the problem resolves itself. Why should I alter my daily life when Verizon is clearly the one with the issue? I hope there's a class action lawsuit because Verizon is trying to get over on everyone! I need answers!

        Hello NotHappy101,
I think it's quite odd that your data usage is at very specific times. We can certainly take a closer look. Please reply to my Direct Message, so we can get some additional details.
