Why is image compression information different on method used

The image size starting out is 72dpi resolution @ 1280x800px dimension.
The final target output settings when using "Save For Web" in Photoshop should be:
72dpi resolution @ 1280x800px dimension
JPEG Quality:75 @ 246.7 Kilobytes.
1. If I re-import the image that is supposed to be at 246.7 Kilobytes in Photoshop and click image size,
it is telling me that the image is 2.93 Megabytes.
2. When using Apple's "Preview" app and click the inspector it is telling me that the image is 253 KB (Kilobytes).
3. When using Apple's "Quick look" feature, selecting the image then hit space bar, it is telling me that the image is 247 KB
(rounded off) which is closer to the original final target output settings of 246.7 Kilobytes.
4. Lastly, when I click Command i to get the image info, it is telling me it is 253 bytes or (254 KB on disk).
Why is all the image info that is available so different and which method should I trust or use?

Hi Choiceimport,
Don't sweat the small stuff. The subtle differences between Preview, Quicklook, and Command-i are due to a variety of things such as how many sectors that program may be looking at to get all the data. Some programs over-reach the sector reading. One area where you'll really see this is if you saved your image and it's 253 kb but when you put that in an email client it might be (and I'm making this number up) 370 kb.
The big issue is why is it so big in PS. To understand this, you have to remember that JPEG images are compressed in a Lossy format. There are two kinds of compression here, the lossy aspect (in that the format actually looses information (ergo lossy), so that the greater the compression, the more of the data is removed and tossed (forever, never to be returned), and the general compression algorithms of the format. Thus, the file has a 247 kb storage size (or thereabouts) but when expanded so it can be seen is 2.93 MB. This is how much PS has to deal with in regards to ram to work with the image but is not its storage size.
And FWIW, I like to specifically call out "storage size" when referring to how big the document is on the hard drive as opposed to the size of the image which (to me) refers to the dimensions of the image (either MPXL or X pixels wide by Y pixels tall).

Why is the word count different when I use word count from the tools menu to the number at the bottom of my mac word document

This forum is for Apple's defunct office suite 'AppleWorks' - since the word count is not in the places you mention I assume you are talking about Microsoft Word? Though it's just possible someone in this forum might also use Word and know the answer, you would stand a higher chance of getting an answer in Microsoft's own forums. You could also try asking in the forum applicable to your operating system - Lion, Mavericks or whatever - on the reasonably chance of finding someone familiar with Word.

  • Why is the CPU usage different ?  I used LOAD_BALANCE option.

    Is it normal?
I want to a balance in CPU Usage (5:5).
If it is the better solution about a Load balance. i want to know it.

You are partially correct which is another way of saying you are incorrect too.
There are two types of load balancing ... server side and client side. There are also questions with respect to how the client is connecting, we don't know, whether the session load is identical, etc. which the OP has not stated.
The only thing I can absolutely say at this point is that what the OP has seen is normal and I can't see any reason why, unless the skew is very large and very permanent, anyone should care.
To the OP: Let's step back from the "what I want" statement and go to the basis of your inquiry: "Why do you care? Please provide a business reason and cite specific performance metrics, from your system, showing the problem you are trying to address. Then perhaps we can help you.

  • Extracting information about image compression settings

    Hi,
Is there any way using SDK 7.0.5 to determine what image compression settings were used for color, grayscale, and monochrome images for a given pdf file?
Also, is it possible to determine which color management policy was used?
    Thanks,
    Daniel Sheiner

Okay, Distiller was a bad example. The same range of settings are available for exporting PDFs from Word. What if someone converted a Word document to a PDF?
Supposing some or most of the information I'm looking for is lost, how much can I infer? For example, if a given PDEImage has the PDEColorSpace DeviceRGB or CalRGB, that at least tells me the user didn't select Color Management Policies -> Convert All Colors to CMYK. It would actually be tremendously helpful if you could tell me which other ColorSpace names, if any, would indicate the user didn't select Convert All Colors to CMYK.
It would also be quite helpful to know if there is some indirect way to determine that a given color or grayscale PDEImage has not been compressed using ZIP, or that a monochrome PDEImage has not been compressed using CCITT Group 4.
    Thanks!

I use NI Calibration Training Interface to calibrate my camera, and the calibrated image is attached below. I can use this image to calibrate my other image in NI Vision Assistant, but if I use IMAQ Set Calibration Info.VI or IMAQ Get Calibration Info 2/3, it outputs error -1074396113 (IMAQ Vision:  The source/input image has not been calibrated.)
It happens even I use image from NI example - C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Vision\Examples\Images\Calibration Model Accuracy - Templates\1. Simple Calibration.png

  • Create PDF without image compression?

How do i create a pdf from multiple images without any compression?
Seems like even if i do optimize pdf and select png(edit the settings to do max res and no downscaling), when it saves the pdf, at 100% zoom, it's obviously bigger than my original png and compressed(or maybe it looks blurry because it's being upscaled when i never requested).
In short, if my png is 500x500, i want it to be exactly that size at 100% maginification once the pdf is saved out. I don't want any compression, i don't want any scaling...why is it so hard to do this???
    Any help is much appreciated!

However... the conversion can be lossless.  If you make a PDF file from a SINGLE image (different option) and select the image format in Files of Type you can click Settings and choose the format for compression. Choose ZIP and compression equivalent to PNG is used.
You also have fine control when printing to PDF.
It's just the Combine Files function, which is fast and simple, that lacks choices.

  • Why are images being copied from a linked library that aren't modified

I'm trying out the linked library feature and that is my preffered way of using iPhoto but I notice that many images that haven't been modified in iPhoto are being copied as full res modified images. My camera Nikon D2x supports auto rotation of verticle images which keeps me from having to manualy rotate these images. I understand that when I modify an image using iPhoto's tools that a full res image will be copied into a modified folder but why are images that have simply been tagged in camera as needing rotation being copied as well. Vertical images account for at least half of all images I shoot and diplaying them properly should be a look at exif or other metadata and applying rotation but since they are images straight from camera they shouldn't show as modified. Anyone have experience or suggestions on how to avoid having auto rotated images show as modified?

    blinden:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I ran into that but in a different way. I had all of my image files in folders on a second HD and used another application to manage them. I decided to use iPhoto's alias method to work with the same files. I got a lot of files that were copied over as modified. Have no idea why. I ended up doing global revert to Original several times, watching the Modified folder via the Finder, until it became empty. I then closed iPhoto, dragged the Modified folder to the trash and then launched iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and rebuild the library using the first three options. That worked and got me a pristine library.
I had not figured out why that happened. I've had the auto-rotate turned off for about a year now. Had I know what was causing it I could have checked to see if all of those bogus modified files occurred before I had turned off that option in the camera. I'm guessing now that that's what I would have found. Thanks for the info.

  • Iphone 6 photo image compression/ quality loss

iPhone 6 and 6 plus have pretty remarkable cameras. But oddly, Apple doesn't seem to want you to keep the high quality images and videos you take. As soon as you email let's say a 3.5 mb photo image, you are asked what size you want to email it in and given a series of compression options. Once you make the decision the first time, that decision is permanent. Apple does not really warn you that you are about to permanently, massively compress (destroy) that original image. There should be a better way to preserve original image files. The email compression decision should impact only that email -- not the master image file. But it does.
Also, if you take an amazing video on your iPhone 6, when you put that video in photostream or in the cloud or email it, there is no warning to you that you've just massively compressed the video. I took a video that was close to 10 mb, emailed it to myself to save it, then had to wipe my phone because of a problem. When i reinstalled and opened the video, it was about 10% of the size of the original video. Original gone. No warning.
It's sort of odd that Apple would not think to create better menus, options and communication/guidance around image compression.
Lastly, if you take a picture on your Iphone .. there is NO WAY to know any metadata on that image file -- unless you go to email it and you get that compressino option screen. You can't see anywhere else the image file size. Again, why make such a great camera if all you want is to massively degrade the image files the moment you do anything with them?

    Howdy elkspark,
If your camera photos still dont look quite right, I would recommend taking a look at this info from the following article to help determine what might be causing this to happen:
Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Your photos are blurred or out of focus
If your photos are blurred, out of focus, or have dark spots, try these steps:
Make sure that the camera lens is clean. If you need to clean the lens, use a microfiber cloth. If you see dirt or debris inside the lens, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.
Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
With iPhone 6 Plus, a metallic case or magnetic lens could interfere with optical image stabilization. If you have a metallic case or magnetic lens attachment, try taking a picture without it. Then compare the quality.
Adjust the focus by tapping on the person or object in the preview screen. You’ll see the screen pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as the camera adjusts. In photo mode, try to stay steady when adjusting the focus. If you move too far in any direction, the camera will automatically refocus to the center. In video mode, you can adjust the focus before you begin recording.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Why are images distorted when burning a slide show to iDVD from iPhoto?

I have created a slide show in iPhoto and wanted to burn a DVD.  Some of the images are scans from old family pictures.
The images present in the proper aspect ratio within iPhoto, but when I burn the CD in iDVD, some of the images are either compressed in from the sides or widened unacceptably.  Anyone know why the images are being distorted?

I gave the iphoto slide show a show and although I couldn't access the options in the idvd dialog box, I liked the end results better. I included 225 pics, and the random transition's option from iphoto enhances the outcome. The random transition option is not available in idvd.

  • Why is iphoto compressing my 300 dpi pics to 72 dpi after I have made edits?

why is iphoto compressing my 300 dpi pics to 72 dpi after I have made edits like color correction?

It is not compressing your photos other than normal JPEG cpompression
DPI is meaningless without inches (Dots per Inch) which digital photos do not have
There is a field in the EXIF data that records a DPI but it is meaningless - basically it says that this photos was displayed on a computer screen which is a 72 DPI device
The photo is exactly the same dimensions and resolution as before editing (unless you cropped it)
See  The Myth of DPI for additional information.
