WHY is iMovie cropping 640x480 MPEG4 video when I drag clip to project?????

I don't think I am trying to do anything fancy.
My Sanyo camera takes VGA resolution video in MPEG-4. When I start iMovie '09 it asks me if I want to import the clip once I pop the SDRAM card in the USB slot. OK. I import the clip. iMovie checks for stabilization. Fine. After the clip is imported I run it and it looks fine.
I create a project and select standard aspect ratio. I select a clip from the imported video and drag it to the project window. The clip appears but I lose about 30% of the frame area around the frame because it's been cropped by iMovie.
I check HELP and locate the Project Properties... menu item and under "Timing" I set Initial Video (and Photo) placement to "Fit in frame". I click OK and retry placing a new clip in the project - SAME PROBLEM. I test an exported clip and the clipping is really there in the exported video clip.
The control settings in iMovie '09 do not seem to work with cropping control. Is there a rather large bug in iMovie or did I miss something obvious? It's just a 640 x 480 video. I would have thought it would be amongst the most common frame sizes aside from 320 x 240 outside of mobile phone video clips.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Mike

aaaaaah, what a relief! I thought I had unwittingly messed up some weird setting. I have to say iMovie is not really geared to the layman. I would never have guessed zooming had anything to do with stabilization.
AppleMan1958, thank you so much! That fixed it completely!!! Now I can send off my video clip and go to bed!

  • How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline?

FCP keeps auto distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline. It keeps setting the motion aspect ratio to -12.5, then when I set it to 0 and render, the video has lost significant quality even though I have my motion render settings to: best. I figure it is this motion distort which is ruining my quality on render because the avi from the camera is ridiculously clean and un-pixelated. How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video? It makes no sense that it does, because at -12.5 aspect ratio, FCP is creating a letterbox for my video. I just want the video to fill the entire canvas that I chose! There must be a setting somewhere that I have missed, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Please help!
I have a video shot on my Pentax K-r that is 1280x 720p 25fps. When run it in quicktime pro, the inspector affirms this sizing. And in QTpro there is no letterbox present when the original is played.
In FCP I have the sequence settings at:
    HDTV 720p (16:9) (which is 1280 720)
    Timebase: 25
I have tried to turn anamorphic on, then off in the clip format settings, and also turn the anamorphic on and off in the sequence settings. No combination seems to correct the problem.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you,
    ML

Hi I have done some more digging and found this:
    1) In the bottom left corner of FCPX, click the film reel so that you can see all your projects:
    2) Select the project you are having problems with and then in the inspector window, click on the spanner icon in the lower right side:
    3) Finally a window appears so that you can choose the settings for the video you are using:
    Hope that helps

  • Why does iMovie 11 take so long when looking in a folder?

A little bit about my configuration. Recently I manually moved some large video file folders onto my Mac from my PC. Some of those folders had mixed media (don't know if this makes a difference but I'm mentioning it) ... avi, mp4, mpeg.
When I do a File/Import and the finder window opens to find the files, sometimes it takes FOREVER (= 5min or more) for the file names in the folder to come up for selection.
What is iMovie 11 doing while that beach ball is spinning? It's a new iMac with the biggest processor and video card Ram available so I hope it's not a performance issue.
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What type of Mac are you using? How much memory and free space on the hard drive? What mode, Events or Photos do you open first? If it's the Photos mode do you have the Event titles selected to be displayed and are they all open or closed?
Do you have sharing enabled, i.e. look for shared photos and share photos, selected in the iPhoto/Sharing preference pane? Do you have the Advanced preferences set to look up places automatically and why type of internet connection do you have?

  • Okay, why am I unable to view videos when I plug my iPod into my computer?

I have a new computer (from school) and when I plug in my iPod, I see the music but no videos or photos. When I set it to auto sync music and select the same for video, the Video menu for my Ipod does not appear using iTune. The video is there on my iPod and all I'm doing is plugging it in. Why can I not find/play it?

I have exactly the same problem.  I have checked that the "sync videos" box is ticked under the Movies tab but to no avail.
Another suggestion was to drag the film over the Ipod icon on the menu bar at the left of the page.  When I try to do this a little red circle with a diagonal line through it appears over the mouse pointer.  I cannot find anywhere on the support pages that explains what this means.  The film will open up and play on my pc within itunes.  Why won't it sync with the ipod ?
    Any other suggestions ?

  • Why do I get standard definition videos when i order hd

When I order HD movies or TV shows from the iTunes Store I get both both HD and SD.  Why is this?  Why waste space on my HDD with a lesser quality movie or TV show?

I'd like to avoid downloading the SD videos.  My iPhone and iPad play HD format movies and TV shows so I don't see why I need to clog up my bandwidth and HDD space with the SD versions I'll never watch.
Is there a preference in iTunes I can set to avoid the SD versions?

  • Hi guys! I have a question related to the latest version of iMovie. For some reason, when I drag a video file to my project, the audio becomes slightly higher pitched. Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Thanks!

This is iMovie 10 I believe. Thanks again!! Really appreciate the help!

To do this in iMovie 11. use the SHARE menu. Share your project using the Share menu and choose Export Using QuickTime.
In the Dialog box that comes up, choose Sound to AIFF, or one of the other sound options. This will create a file that you can drag into iTubes.

  • Why does Safari refuse to play videos when iOS does

Safari 6.01 on my iMac refuses to play videos. It will play Flash.
Is it because of location although they play on iOS.

Many web servers adapt the content they serve to the client that requests it. That's all I can tell you based on the information you've provided.

  • IMovie '09 keeps crashing - now when I try to view Projects

Hi. iMovie '09 has proved pretty unstable. Right now when I open the program, the list of projects is not available. When I click the button to show projects, the program crashes every time. This means I cannot view my project list right now. All of my events are on an external hard drive - supposedly where they are supposed to be to be recognized by iMovie (and they all appear in the Events Library).
This is a bit of a problem, as I'm in a crunch moment and need to use iMovie asap.
    Any solutions out there?
    thanks so much!!

No release of Pages v5 can open AppleWorks, Pages '05, Pages '06, Pages '08, or RTF documents. Sometimes, it cannot open its own documents.
You will need to do one of the following:
Borrow your MacBook Pro back until you can export all your incompatible documents to MS Word (Which Pages v5 can open)
Install your iWork '08 DVD on your new Air, and then immediately apply the following Apple Updaters. Again Export to MS document formats.
    Pages v3.0.3
    Numbers v1.0.3
    Keynote v4.0.4
Purchase iWork '09 DVD, and then immediately update with Apple iWork 9.3 updater.
Open the document(s) that Pages v5 won't permit
Save as Pages '09 v4.3 documents, or export as MS Word
Upload to Zamzar, and convert to MS Word (free for limited volume)
    No sensitive documents
Email notification within 3 - 4 minutes with MS Word document download link
After you do either item 2 or 3, run Disk Utility and verify/repair application permissions on your boot drive. Open your converted documents in Pages v5.

  • Why does iMovie remove the last half of my imported clips?

I've noticed that when I'm importing clips from an SD card the window tells me "___ minutes and ___ seconds have been imported from ___ clips." but when I go to view said footage, only the first half of the each clip is there. Literally to the second, iMovie stops at exactly the halfway point of the clip and just completely removes the last half. What's going on? Please help.

  • Why does photoshop unexpectedly resize an image when i drag it to another canvas?

    Hello everyone.
I'm just having a simple problem that is not the worst or most crippling, but it is slightly annoying. For example, say I resize an image down to 245 pi X 300 pi. I then drag it from it's original canvas to another one (essentially I'm dragging and dropping). The sizing is not right? It is not the same 245  pi X 300 pi on the other canvas? Is that something I did and is there any way I can fix that because I like using templates that have specified pixel lengths and widths. So I keep having to make approximations which is really annoying.
Anyways, I hope there is some possible way you can help me. Thanks in advance

    Hi John
Play Your .mov file with QT-player.
    - plays OK then save it as streamingDV and import this (may be You need
the pro upgrade of QuickTime to do this)
    not playing OK -
    - Did You change the name on the .mov file ? restor original name and retry.
