Why is importing raw as dng so very slow? 3 min a frame

I have a canon 5d mark II, 4Gb compactflash card ultra II en extreme III
Importing them by usb 2,0 reader to lightroom 2.6 on apple G5, 2,3 Ghz,  2,5 Gb DDR2 SDRAM. At the same time converting them to DNG and making a back-up to a other computer in the network.
Importing time about 3 minutes a frame, so for about 150 pivtures on a 4 GB card 150 x 3 min = 450 min = 7 1/2 hour.
Is this normal ?? Or what do I wrong?

Do not believe you are doing any thing wrong. Several things could cause the slow process you are experiencing. I think the copy to another computer on a network is the main contributor.
My preferred method would be to copy from the CF card direct to a folder on your HDD using a card reader (not directly from the camera). Then import into lightroom, converting to dng. Last do the back up of the dng files to the network computer using your OS tools.

  • Why is my (old) macbook pro so very slow and not able to receive gmail?

    It seems to have given up.  I have deleted spam, old messages etc.  Any other ideas to speed it up?
    Very slow to start up, seems unable to think...does that mean it is out of RAM?  How would I check that?
    Thanks for any help

    Try removing Dropbox from your startup items. Go to System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click your name and choose login items. You can remove it there. That won't delete it from your machine, just stop it from loading automatically. Reboot and see if that helps.
    I'm not sure what "store monitor" is. I don't think that's for the App store, as I don't have it running on my machine. See if that loads from Login items while you're in there.

  • Very slow mini

    We have 5 macs in the house and the new mini (1.66 ghz intel core duo, 512 mb ram) is the slowest. My old g4 mirror door is way faster and so is my 4.5 yr old powerbook. The mini never seems to run the fan or spin the hard drive. Tabbing bertween applications is very slow and opening a simple word document form the desktop takes 30 seconds with word already open.
    Is there any test I can run to get and exact test mesurement to see if something is wrong?
    Thanks in advance for suggestions.

    Jennifer, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    As the previous poster has said, if you are running older software such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop (other than the new CS3 version), etc, then your problem is that the min i is running these applications under emulation. While 512Mb RAM is enough for the system in the broad sense, it is not really enough for MacOS, Rosetta AND the application on top. The result is that all three layers are constantly swapping out essential bits of memory to the hard drive for temporary storage and then pulling them back in again. These 'paging' activities are slow so the system, despite being capable in itself of very good performance, runs very sluggishly.
    There are two possible solutions. More RAM is the obvious, where even 1Gb instead of 512Mb would make a considerable difference (though 2Gb is a better investment if running many applications, or needing power-user software). As an alternative, there may be Intel-native software applications with will run natively on the system and thus not need Rosetta, to replace your existing applications. Examples would be Neo Office instead of Microsoft Office, GraphicConverter in place of many of the functions of Photoshop.
    Without such action, running older software on your new Intel mini would be expected to give you little better than the same performance you get from the same software on your old G4 MDD, with the Intel system slowing notably with each additional application open. Thus, if you need to stick to non-native software such as Word, the nearest thing you'd get to reasonable performance is to run with on one application at a time until you upgrade the RAM.

  • ITunes only imports half the song+running very slow!

    Ok, so I've been reading through these postings and it looks as though many are experiencing the same issues! When I import a song to iTunes only portions of the file are imported, then iTunes skips ahead and downloads the next song. Also, the application runs very slowly and takes a long time to load. Are there any indications that suggest these issues will be resolved with the next update? Does anyone know when to expect the next version of iTunes? Will going to the Apple Store help my cause? I just spent $300 and I want this to work. What should I do? Also, it says I'm running v 6.0.0.18???
    hp laptop   Windows XP

    Other people have been having similar problems with songs over the last few days, I assume that there has been a problem with Apple's servers.
    Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting it from your iTunes library and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
    If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if it re-downloads in the state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • Importing a 41kb textflow is very slow

    Hi there,
    i ran into serious problems when I wanted to load a 41KB file of "text layout formatted" into a textflow... Flash player is freezing for about 30 seconds (but finally loads the text correctly). This file is basically a bunch of ParagraphElement (<p>) which can contain around 2000 chars for the longest, each paragraph containing spans and anchors (no more than 20 spans & "a" tags by paragraph).
    My problem could be related to this one, but is not the same:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3111903
    Actually I use a RichEditableText, so the solution found by schipmold don't work for me, but i read in the post that "
    If it is a big enough textflow, it is probably just taking too long.  There
    are some performance improvements in 4.1 and more to come in Hero."
    Is there no solution to either improve speed of importation (it's the parsing of XML / building of the object tree that are taking so long ?) or slicing the process of parsing so that the UI doesn't freeze ??? Is there no possibility of doing incremental parsing with the textLayout API ?? Can I "serialize" the TextFlow in order to load it faster ? Or am I looking at the wrong direction and what is taking so long is the rendering of the text ??
    If I have to implement something to handle this, I have to know a bit more about the underlying implementation of TextConverter.importToFlow...
    Otherwise I will have to rasterize the text and load an image, which is a really bad solution...
    Anybody found a way to handle this kind of issue ?
    Thanks

    I realize that I was misleading completly...
    My problem was not related at all to the textLayout implementation... but to the LayoutManager...
    The RichEditableText is a child of some container, and I'm toggling its visibility and resizing it when I need to show some text. It seems that the cause of the freezing was that the RichEditableText had a 0 width when the textflow was loaded.
    I tried to call validateNow() on the container and the RichEditableText before the loading of the text, and the measurement seemed to be ok, but the freezing still occured.
    So I modified the MXML in order to force the component to have the right size at initialization phase, and toggled visibility and resized it programmatically after initialization with a creationComplete handler, because I need the component to be hidden by default.
    And now it works !
    What a mess...

  • Operation very slow, Mini Server

    Dear all,
    my MAC Mini Server takes for each and every operation minutes instead of seconds and currently the updates will end with a failure (All updates could not be proceeded)
    Any suggestion to this ?!
    Thanks for all help,
    Joshua

    Volume corruptions and failing disk storage hardware can also cause slowness, but it's not clear what sort of errors you're encountering here.
    If you're seeing hardware or I/O errors reported by the Disk Utility repair-volume mechanism, then I'd suggest getting an immediate backup of your (potentially failing?) disk, using Disk Utility, to an external storage device; to a USB disk or similar.  Best to get a copy now, should this actually be a hardware failure in progress.
    Some number of (correctable) file-protection errors from repair-permissions mechanism is unfortunately somewhat normal for an OS X or OS X Server system, and — if Disk Utility can resolve those ownership or protection settings online or possibly after a reboot and running Disk Utility via the recovery partition — are not usually a problem.
    If you're not sure what you're looking at with those errors, then some more details on what was done within Disk Utility (permissions?  volume verification?) and a few more details of the particular errors that were reported, would possibly be useful.

  • Why HttpURLConnection became very slow in JWS?

    I answer if somebody know why HttpURLConnection in a JWS application is very slow.

    Hi camsuresh and thanks for your reply.
    The specific code is this:
            URL url = null;
            HttpURLConnection connection = null;
            BufferedReader br = null;
            DataOutputStream parameterWriter = null;
            String line;
            try {
                    url = new URL("http://myServer.it/myPHPScript.php");
                    connection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();
                    connection.setDoInput(true);
                    connection.setDoOutput(true);
                    connection.setAllowUserInteraction(true);
                    connection.setConnectTimeout(1000 * 60 * 2);
                    connection.setRequestMethod("POST");
                    parameterWriter = new DataOutputStream(connection.getOutputStream());
                    String parametri = "user=" + user;
                    parameterWriter.writeBytes(parametri);
                    parameterWriter.flush();
                    parameterWriter.close();
                    connection.connect();
                    br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(connection.getInputStream()));
                    line = br.readLine();
                    while (line != null) {
                      System.out.println("line = " + line);
                      line = br.readLine();
             }catch(Exception e){
             }If i execute this code in my IDE (NetBeans) or by the jar file it run very fast.
    On opposite, if i upload the signed jar on a server and execute it by JWS, this code will take a long time to execute.
    So i think this is strictly dependent on JWS execution, because in traditional execution it's all ok and very fast.
    I hope that my english is well enought! :)

    Why is both my apple Tv's (very) slow at downloading (buffer) from my iTunes account on my hard drive (home sharing)

    You didn't clarify where you were accessing the content from computers icon or one of the other icons (using the cloud)
    It's a coincidence. Verify interference using istumbler and try Ethernet

  • Typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7

    Why is typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7?

    Try a Restart.
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your device
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
     Resetting your settings
    You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.

  • When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size?

    When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size from canon 5d mark iii, in older versions I used to be able to import the files as larger images. It use to have a number of options for the images size. The option now is smaller than the maximum size used to be.

    You know what - I'm sorry
    I'd had a crazy long all-nighter session sorting out images for a client, then decided - when I should have simply gone to bed - to set up the new photoshop. At the very start I made a silly mistake, tried to sort it out then decided to call it a day, responding to your remarks with the problem still in my head but feeling more and more tired.
    Responded again to your comment earlier with the problem still in my head but not in front of me on the screen - however with a fresh head I just turned it all on, opened up PS and today could instantly see what was going on - Oops!
    Thank you for being patient with a sleep deprived photographer who must have been getting annoying yesterday
    I am officially embarrassed

  • Why is iPhoto (Mountain Lion) importing RAW/NEF files as jpeg's?

    I am manually importing via DVD's my archived iPhoto files from  iPhoto '08, (7.1.5), Snow Leopard, to my new computer running Mountain Lion. iPhoto '11 (9.4.3). Most of my files are in RAW format (NEF) and was saved as such. I am noticing that as I import from the discs into the new iPhoto, it is importing some as jpeg's and I am loosing my RAW data. I am findiing very little being imported as RAW.
    Has anyone else had this experience?
    Is there somewhere in the settings that I am not finding, to correct this? I checked all that I know to look at and I did not find anywhere an option to change the format of the image in importing.
    I, also, converted files from jpeg to.tiff and saved them as such, but I am not finding any .tiff files either.
    Any info?
    Thank you for any help you can give.

    OK.  WOW!
    One by one!  Larry, Terence and Old Toad,
    Thank you, all of you, for your helpful replies.
    Firstly, I am a little confused between Larry and Terence; sounds like opposite info. Is it?
    Old Toad, Now I know about this easy way to do this. I have, at least, 1T+20,000 more images, some of which I will import into my new 750 gig Macbook Pro, so this seems easy. (Already over 30,000 images. Can iPhoto hold so much???)
    It seems tho, that I AM BUSTED!
    Unfortunatelly, I could not import directly the old Library to the new Library because of the below reason. (even tho there seems to be some difference of opinion on this between Terence and Larry)
    I did the unthinkable. I worked out of the iPhoto Library.
    What I did was this: my older Macbook Pro, had a 200 gig HDD, and could NOT handle all the photos I was putting into it (which I needed to do the work I want to do), so I first downloaded the images from my camera to iPhoto, then, I downloaded,as I went along, by year, to external HDD, and then I cut DVD's, by year, in pieces, via Toast, as my backup. (both, directly from the iPhoto Library), Then, I deleted many of the photos in each event, in each year, leaving only enough to remind me what is in that event.
    (Then, when I needed images from that event, I could go back to the HDD to see and get the rest of the pix I needed to use).
    I KNOW this is totally SACRELIGIOUS of Mac and the whole iPhoto Library set-up, but it didn't hurt the library functioning, (in the old mac), at all, and was the only way I knew to do it, as going thru iPhoto itself, didn't work out so well.
    (That is why I didn't import directly my old library to the new Mac, not all the photos were there, and I thought it would be more confusing trying to add the missing photos to each event in the new iPhoto).
    However, re-importing from the HDD  to the new iPhoto, was a bit of a mess, as I got, (as 2 of you, above, said), mixed up info, as both "originals" as well as "events" downloaded, which gave me duplicates of some, and the dates are NOT necessarily in order, as was in the old iPhoto before. (but that I can reconcile, later, can't I?
    Can I move events to other places in iPhoto?
    However, going directly via the DVD's into the new iPhoto, gave me exact input and I got all the files as well as all the data. But, in some, very slow downloading, and very few, some date order mixup, but very few.
    SO, this new iPhoto Library is a bit messed up with the duplicate images in about the first 3,000 or so images, but I assume I can fix this up.
    Oh g---d.
    In any event, it is now showing RAW and jpeg's as info in the metadata pane.
    Thank you , all of you. I am not so computer savy, I do better in photography!
    All the help I receive is welcome and worthwhile. And if there is anymore you want to tell me, besides scolding me for going into the iPhoto Library, it is all welcome.
    I Thank you.

  • Plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Blackmagic POCKET Cinema Camera

    Are there plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Black Magic POCKET Cinema Camera into Adobe Premiere Pro CS6?

    There won't be any new features introduced in CS6, only some bug fixes if ever. All new features go into CC. Rumour has it that Camera RAW will be added into PrPro (sooner or later).
    Off topic question: have you tried to convert BMPCC CinemaDNG files into DNG via Adobe DNG Converter? Resulting files are about 15% larger, so I hope that is what constitutes uncompressing them and making possible to import into PrPro CC natively (I'm not on CC, hence can't test, but I'm curious).

  • Why are my RAW images imported in to Lightroom 5 being de-saturated?

    Lately, in LR 5.3 and 5.5, every time I import RAW images they show up de-saturated.  In the thumbnail they look right, but in both the library and develop mode main screens they show up very flat and de-saturated.
    This is the first time I have had this problem.....never had it in V2-4.
    I am shooting with a Canon 5D MIII.
    I thought that there may be a preset during import that is doing this, but I do not think that is the case.
    I need some help, any ideas what is causing this?  I cant process all my weddings with this issue.....it would take forever to fix.
    JP

    Images can be different between the camera-rendered preview you see before Import and the default Adobe rendering, but after import the thumbnail in the LR grid view shouldn’t be a different tone than the image in the main area.  Is that what you’re saying you’re seeing?
    Can you show us a screenshot with both the thumbnail filmstrip and the central area visible as well as the histogram?
