Why is it "illegal" to write an app that lists WIFI signal strength?

I would be very useful to be able to see which wifi signal near me has the strongest signal and what channel(s) have wifi.  I have heard that apple will NOT allow anyone to create an app with those features.  Can someone please tell me why?
Thank you
Bruce

Fact:
Several apps in the Apple iTunes app store at one time provided this service.
Fact:
They ALL used a third party library that was not approved by Apple.
Fact:
They ALL disappeared from the Apple iTunes app store.
Fact:
The requisite features are not available in an Apple approved API, Apple's or anyone elses.
Why:
Who knows and who really cares?  iOS is Apple's platform and Apple make the rules.
If you don't agree with the rules you can always express your discontent at Apple's feedback site.
As others have said, speculation concerning Apple's past, present, or future decisions is against the TOS.

  • Any apps to measure wifi signal strength?

Want to assess signal strength in various locations.  Is there an iOS app or a Mac app to do this?

Where did you get that from? It displays signal strength and noise!!!
iStumbler does display signal strength and noise. I said that it does not display a reading for SNR.  Maybe you do not understand SNR?  Do you see a column heading for SNR in iStumbler?
SNR is the raw signal data minus raw noise displayed in dBm. The percentages that iStumbler displays are not very useful, but fun to look at.
It appears that you might be able to calculate the actual SNR by using the Inspector feature of iStumbler under the Edit menu, then do the math. Let us know if this works for you. Post back if you do not know how to do this. WiFi Explorer does this for you right on the main page.
    SNR Signal Quality Chart

  • Why can't I use my old apps that I purchased on my ipad 1?

I don't understand why I can't use my old apps that "I" paid for.  They all worked fine until I can no longer update my ipad.  When you purchase software for your computer you can keep using it until your computer dies.  Doesn't seem quite right that suddenly your apps are all gone and you can no longer use them.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I have the Ipad 1 which is sufficient for me with the Apps I "had" now each time I update and sync I have fewer and fewer apps that actually work.  I think at least I should have the last updated version of the app.

    Don't update....
Some of these apps may be fixed to be backward compatible.   Until then you will lose apps if you allow updates on the computer and sync to iPad.

go to itunes preferences, store, uncheck automatic downloads. also when your phone is connected you can click  on apps and only check the ones you want on your phone, go down to the bottom right and click apply.

Since you have already isolated it down to your home network, if following Steve's instructions do not fix your issue, contact your Internet Service Provider or Router Manufacturer and make sure your network is set up according to this information: iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

  • Why am I being charged to update apps that I know were free?

I have several apps that I've downloaded that I know are free 100% and even ones I've had for years, but since updating to a whole new phone, things aren't acting right. Every time I try to update these apps, I get this thing where I have to sign in to my account to view settings. Then when I do it says my info is wrong, but it's not. And even if I cancel the updates it's been charging me $1.75 each time! So now I have $12.25 in charges just to update apps that are free! So wth?!
The apps are: Dragon Skies, Action Bowling Free and Breeding Guide for DragonVale.

    Go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

  • Is there a location aware wifi option (or app) that enables wifi at a specific location (home) and automatically disables it when you are away from the specified location?

I manually turn off my wifi when leaving home for several reasons:
    1. I don't want my wifi to be on and constantly scanning wifi networks while I am away from home due to privacy reasons.  Many retail stores and airports are now tracking users based on their smartphone's wifi pings.  They can then store your phone's MAC address (the unique identifier of your phone) to determine how often you visit the store and where you go within the store.  It's just a matter of time before they match up your phone's MAC address with your credit card/payment info and then to your identity.  The only way to subvert this is to turn off your phone's wifi.
    2. For security reasons: Wifi access points can track devices that broadcast their wifi signal, even if they don't ever actually connect to the access point's network.  These access points can then store your device's details including your phone's MAC address.  Once your phone's MAC address is discovered, it can be targeted by a hacker.  In addition, there are multiple well known hacker tools that can be used to scan for smartphone wifi signals in order to detect and then hack your iphone.  Bottom line: if your wifi is discoverable, then your device is hackable.
    3. I believe it would save battery life if the iphone's wifi is not on and constantly scanning for networks all the time.
There are other reasons as well, but the above are my 3 main reasons for asking about this.
The reminders app is location aware - you can set reminders to alert you when you are at a specific location.  So, why not provide the option (or an app) to only enable wifi when you are at home - or any other location where you have an authorized or trusted wifi?
As it is right now, the iphone's wifi is broadcasting 24/7 everywhere you go.  Not great for privacy & security.  When I turn off my wifi, the phone uses my 4G plan for data and GPS for location services... so wifi is not needed at all for data or location services while I am away from home (and no, wifi does not improve location accuracy, that is a fallacy... there is nothing within the wifi protocol that could ever improve location accuracy).  But the point is, wifi should have a location aware option.  Otherwise, it's just a matter of time before there is a headline story about how not having this feature is a huge security/privacy problem.

Understood.  However, the point that I'm trying to make is that it's not the WiFi access point's security that's in question, it's having your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode that's in question.  It's simple: if your phone's WiFi is on, then it is both discoverable and hackable... even when it's not connected to a WiFi network or access point.  Here's an article about a drone in London that was created to hack smartphone WiFi signals (and hackers have been doing what this drone does for years):
    http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/20/technology/security/drone-phone/
The point is that it's not  secure to have your phone's WiFi in an always-on mode.  It would be better for privacy and security if Apple made WiFi location aware so that it is only enabled when you are at a trusted location (e.g. your home or office).  Or, at least give us the option of location aware WiFi so that each user can determine the best mode for their phone:
    (1) Always-On (current default - not secure and many privacy issues).
    (2) Trusted mode (only on at trusted locations).
    (3) Off.

  • Why Is My iPhone 4 Struggling To Pick Up a Wifi Signal My Macbook Has No Problem Receiving?

I have both an iPhone 4 and a late 2009 Macbook.  I work at an office just a few yards from the local hospital.  The hospital has a public wifi that is definitely receivable, although weak in spots.  But what I have noticed is that my iPhone 4 has a real hard time finding the signal and keeping it.  I usually only get 2 bars max, out of the three on the signal graphic on the screen of the iPhone.  It drops out often on the iPhone.  However, when I connect with my Macbook, the connection is solid and it displays that I am getting a full signal.  The signal doesn't drop on the Macbook.  My question is why is there a difference between the iPhone and Macbook in picking up a wifi signal?  Do iPhones not have as much sensitivity to pick up a weaker signal?  Is there something I can do to the iPhone to enhance its reception?

    They better huh?
I'm sure Apple is shaking in their boots.
No such problem with my iPhone which I connect with a number of wi-fi networks.
If the same problem with any other wi-fi network besides your own and no change after resetting network settings and/or after restoring the iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.
If the problem is with your wi-fi network only - no problem with any other wi-fi network besides your own, the problem is not with the iPhone.

  • Just lately, my iPod has been saying that it's connected to wifi, but when I try to use the wifi and use an app that requires wifi, it keeps saying things like 'Cannot connect to server' when it clearly is 'connected'. What's wrong with my iPod?

Also, when I tried to connect my iPod to my MacBook Pro, and sync it into iTunes, 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone.' First it's not an iPhone, and second, my iPod could sync perfectly fine before the wifi problem. Is there a way to return it back to normal; fix it? Someone please answer.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Is there an app that will show show how many characters one uses in an SMS?

Apple are still not showing how many characters are used when one send an SMS, does anyone know why? and if there is an APP that will take care of this? Thanks

I'm not sure if it will work for international texting, but I use AIM to text my friends all the time.
Just put +1 followed by the phone number, including area code, without any punctuation, and it works for within the US. And when your contact replies, it goes directly to your AIM account.
There is also a way to send texts using your email client, and the replies get sent directly to your email inbox. There is a service called teleflip that will do it. Again, I don't know how well it works internationally.
The best thing to do would be to try both solutions out.

  • App World via Wifi

I tried to access App World via Wifi only (Radio off), but it shows a message saying "...no sufficient wireless coverage...".
Why isn't it possible to access App World via Wifi only?
I would rather use Wifi, than the data plan for obvious reasons, or even the USB connection to my PC.
    Thank you in advance, regards.
