Why is it taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up?

It is taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up. It's been on the screen with the grey apple and the spinning icon for about 20 minutes now. I tried holding down the shift button when powering up to reboot in safe mood but that is taking forever as well. Any suggestions?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Why does it take so long for my MacBook Pro to start?

When I start up my MacBook, it takes a good minute or two for the gray screen to go away.  Is this normal, or is there something I can do to speed up the process?

try this - go to system preferences and select your hard drive as the start up drive - even if it's already selected, select it again and restart your macbook.
if that doesn't work - do a SMC RESET and see if it improves the way your Macbook performs.
while you're at it - once you're up and running - open disk utility and verify your disk permissions - if errors are found, repair them and restart your Macbook and see if that makes it perform faster for you.
also see how much disk space you've got left.  when you're close to full, it's normal for your macbook to slow down.
good luck - hope those tips helps you out.

  • HT1338 Why every time I get an Apple software update for my MacBook Pro click on it but at never opens up it always error

Why when I get a software update for my MacBook Pro i click on it for some reason it never connects to the server I can never get my software update is anyone else having this problem? if so what do I do? i have the 2007 macbook pro Mountain lion 10.8.2

Start up from that Mac OS X 10.4 disc you have.  Insert disc in optical drive and start up with the C key held down.  On the first Installer screen, from the menu bar, under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility.
In Disk Utility, select your startup volume (usually "Macintosh HD") in the sidebar and go to the First Aid tab.  Run Verify Disk.  If it reports a problem, that may be the reason for your long-term difficulties. You hard drive volume has data corruption.
You can try Repair Disk in Disk Utility.  However, it would be a very good idea to have a backup of the data on that disk, in case the attempt to repair makes the problem worse.

  • Why is it taking forever to move objects in AI? I am completely up to date in CC 2014

I am working on Trade Show Banners, 8' x 31".  Using linked eps files for all the images that have to go in it. If AI isn't crashing, it's taking forever for every thing I try to do!!!  So now, if I adjust kerning, I save. It takes 8-10 minutes to save. Next thing - 8-10 min to move an object. Then 8-10 min to save because when it crashes I lose all the work. This is driving me nuts. I have deadlines!

    1. What OS? OS X Yosemite 10.10.2  Mac Pro
    2. How much RAM? 16GB (1066 MHZ DDR3 ECC)
    3. Is your Preferences > Scratch Disks set up properly? How much free space on your scratch disks? Scratch disk 1: 379.28 GB free
scratch disk 2: 360.61 GB free
    4. Are you doing any raster effects on this large document? If so, how big are they, and at what resolution? (Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings...) CMYK, 300 pip, Transp. Bkgrnd, Preserve spot colors
    5. How large are the placed files, and from what source (AI, Photoshop, etc.)? Are you embedding any of the placed files, or are they all linked?  All are linked .eps files vary, from 8mg, 12 mg, 32mg, 43mg, etc. all food and equipment shots.
I appreciate any help! I update constantly and it seems that this last update has put a spanner in the works! I've read so many solutions. I use safari, not chrome...
    thanks!

  • The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions?

The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to spend 130 dollars on something I'm going to have to replace in less than a year (which is what normally I been reading)  I do design work and I take my mac everywhere.  Having to always look for a plug or having to be constantly plugged in doesn't sound ideal to me.  Please help me. what should I do???

Why does it matter if it a scam????? I'll let you figure that out by yourself.  If I'm going to replace it, why should I be contempt with a battery that I have to replace within months (as stated by some people in the comments). The issue here is not if I should or not replace it OBVIOUSLY I'm going to have to before it starts going crazy.  The underlying issue is why is the replacement battery for a lack of better words " a bit crap."  It comes with a 3 month guarantee?? Is that a joke?!??!?! Some people complained it malfunction after only 8- 9 months? I'm sorry but as an Apple fan I think it's absolutely rubbish. I know there is no magic cure I'm just hoping someone shines the light on how crappy this replacement is.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

Thanks. According to my previous experience with an old white macbook, there might exist some compatibility problems for the hardware I bought from computer parts store...That's why I want to find an official retail store or reseller.... Thanks anyway!
