Why is iTunes automatically changing edited song and album information?

Hi guys, I've seen this question asked several times but I haven't seen an answer or advice that specifically relates to the problems I've been having with my iTunes library of late.
I've got a pretty big collection of music on iTunes - almost 1000 albums - and I'm pretty anal about the way it's stored and managed and I regularly change the song and album information to suit my own "house style". All my music was stored on a Dell laptop and was fine - I had no problems with changing and editing the information. I recently bought a MacBook Pro and shifted all the music files from the old machine onto the new one (a lengthy and frustrating process) and since then, I've had a lot of hassle in terms of amending and organising my iTunes collection. A lot of the music I've purchased from the iTunes store has reverted back to its original state, no matter how many times I've changed it.
For example:
Lana Del Rey's Born to Die (Deluxe Version). I've removed the "Deluxe Version" from the title but I quit iTunes or sync it with my iPod, it automatically adds it back. I've changed the information in the song info, I've even changed it in the sort info just to be sure, but it always changes back.
The same with the Anthems Electronic 80s compilation. I want to call it Ministry of Sound: Electronic 80s and remove it from Various Artists (by deleting the album artist from the information). But after iTunes is quit or its been synced, the same thing happens. It appears as two albums on my iPod - a handful of tracks appear under the old title while the bulk of them appear under the new one.
It's happening across loads of albums, all ones I've downloaded (the stuff ripped from CDs seems to be okay). I've done as much as I can in terms of the song info but no matter what I do, it just reverts back when the programme's quit or I sync my iPod. I don't know if it's anything to do with the fact they're in the Cloud or they've been imported from a Dell laptop or there's an underlying problem with iTunes (a couple of posts elsewhere on this forum suggest it might be the case) but it's really frustrating.
I apologise for the length of my post but I wanted to be as thorough as possible to outline the problem. If anyone's in a position to offer me any advice, I'd be hugely grateful!

A handful of others have complained about this recently.  Seems to happen to iTunes Store purchases only.  Somehow they are connecting back to the Store and refreshing label information.  There may be a solution but few seem to try experimenting with settings to see if something stops it.
2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file. Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

Why does Itunes automatically change the genre of my songs? I have assigned specifit genres but they're constantly changed without me doing it. ITs annoying. Does anyone know how i can stop this?

    welcome to the discussions
you may find that WMP is doing this for you.
There is a setting is WMP that means that it checks the info held in the file (and shown by itunes) against that held at Gracenote and 'updates' the info where there is any disagreement. On my copy its under the 'media library' tab.
Turn this off if its on.

  • Why is iTunes automatically changing my genre metadata?

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012
Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
    iTunes 11-2-2 (3)
    64-bit
Why is iTunes automatically changing my genre metadata?
For the past couple months I’ve noticed that iTunes has been changing genre information in my music library.  This is a problem because I’ve spent the past decade tweaking the metadata in my iTunes Library to be exactly the way that I want it (particularly with genre and grouping information).
I have a very large iTunes library and I’ve changed genre and grouping info for organizational reasons.  When iTunes changes the genre of my music, it’s effecting my smart playlists and causing a domino effect of mis-organization.  Tracks and albums are popping up in multiple genres, and things are getting disorganized very quickly.
I suspect that iTunes is changing the genre info of my purchased music back to how it appears in the iTunes store and that this is going to be a new ongoing Apple issue that is quietly ignored.  If that’s the case, then I would like some feedback from other users who may have some helpful advise to disconnect iTunes from the mother ship of the iTunes Store.  If this is the way it’s going to be, then I’ll simply stop buying music from iTunes and try to use iTunes as a stand alone music player (if possible).  If that is NOT possible, then I’ll be looking into moving my entire music library to different software and completely removing myself from iTunes.  After a decade of loving iTunes, that would obviously be a shame, but losing control of my library is a deal breaker.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Other notes/observations:
-I am NOT using iTunes Match
    -Genius is turned OFF
-Tracks being automatically edited is music that has been purchased from the iTunes Store
-Not all tracks purchased from the iTunes Store is being automatically edited
-If I Command-Info a track that has been edited by iTunes, the metadata changes back to what I had changed it to.  But ONLY when I Command-Info or play the track.  Otherwise the track stays lost in it’s reversed genre and the track disappears from smart playlists that it’s included in.

Yep, others are seeing the same thing and I have not seen a solution posted yet.
Send feedback to Apple and wait very patiently and keep fingers crossed they do something about it, eventually, someday.

  • Editing song and CD information.

I am setting up new Smart Playlists and I want to organize the albums in each playlist by Genre.  Example: my Christmas albums will have the Genre of "Holiday" and a Smart Playlist is set-up to collect all my Christmas music.  Unfortunately, I found out that some of my Christmas albums were originally loaded into iTumes with a different Genre other then "Holiday".  I went into iTunes Help and found the article that dealt with Editing Songs and CD Information.  I selected one of the Xmas albums and followed the instructions of going to File > Get Info.  This brought up the album information and the Genre was showing "Country".  The editing routine let me go to this field and select a new Genre of "Holiday".  Unfortunately, no matter what I do, the change I am trying to make will not stay.  I make the change and click on OK at the bottom of the screen.  But when I go back and check to see if the change is there, it has reverted back to the original setting of "Country".  What am I doing wrong?

Try clicking once on the on the song you want to edit then click again on the field you want to change to open the text box. I found that this works for me. If you double click too quickly the song plays instead.

  • Help! iTunes automatically changes my song tags.

Hey, when I add new songs to my iTunes library, iTunes automatically updates the tags giving it its own album artist, album, track numbers, etc. I personally find this very annoying and sometimes forces my library to become very unorganized. Any help in fixing this? Any option to just turn off the auto update of song tags?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I still have this problem. I have two PCs, both of them have Vista (though different versions) and exactly the same version of iTunes. On one PC, iTunes automatically updates tags, on the other it doesn't. And right now tags are only changed when I play a song in iTunes. It drives me crazy. A few observations and speculations:
There may be a process running (outside iTunes) which checks the properties of an MP3 file played by iTunes and adds certain tags which are not present. Unlikely, but impossible?
The properties you see when you check the file info are taken from the iTunes Music Library.xml file and not from the MP3 file itself. If you look at the file properties in Windows Explorer, you can sometimes see that it can have information for ID3 tags which is not visible in iTunes. When the information is added in iTunes, it is taken from the MP3 file tags and added to the xml file, I think. This means that when you delete the tags from the MP3 file itself, using TagScanner, for instance, it is impossible for iTunes to add it to the xml file and display it in iTunes. I've been experimenting with this and it seems to work.
If the above is true, the question remains why iTunes adds or updates tag information when I have explicitly forbidden it to do that by disabling all the options mentioned here. I still have no clue. Anyone else?

  • My iTunes Library is replicating songs and albums in the library - ghosting

I recently collated many iTunes libraries and manually deleted duplicate files. Now when I open iTunes I'm seeing two and sometimes three of the same albums and songs I know I deleted. When I look in my hard drive I see that there are no duplicates but in the library file the duplicates clone themselves.
Is there a way I can fix this issue without loosing my library file and consequently loose play lists and features I've programmed.

I second this problem. Sometimes the song will have the same title other times it will slap the name of the artist in front of the title so I can't just hit the find duplicates button I have to manually go through my whole library. Once I do delete them all I go back through my library a little latter and its started to do it again.

  • Why would iTunes automatically change track info?

I played a track in my iTunes library (purchased directly from band, not iTunes) which I have played many times over the last two years.  This time, however, the track suddenly disappeared from my sort view immediately after I clicked on it and as it was playing.  When I located it, I saw that the album name had changed from the album that I had purchased to a compilation album that the track had appeared on years ago (thus the resorting), and other track info had been altered as well.  This also happened for another track that I clicked on from the same album.  All other tracks on the album were unaffected when I played them.  How is it possible for iTunes to alter track info, particularly for music I have not purchased from iTunes?

I suspect iTunes is revealing "corrections" made by Windows Media Player. If so the damage is done and you'll probably find other tracks have been affected over time.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

  • We are currently having troubles with our iTunes. Playing different songs and randomly it changes the name of the song to pink time after time. We could go through 5 songs before it will change the next one to song title time after time and artist pink

Hi I am having trouble with iTunes! Randomly when I click on a song in iTunes it changes the song title to time after time and the artist is pink.
I could click on 4 songs and they will be normal but then the 5th one will change the info to time after time.
I haven't done anything different or new, it started doing it all of a sudden, well that I have noticed anyway. Please help.

Hello Schimi. The Time Capsule is a kind of product that offer you two possibility:
    - To use the TC as a router or as an external HD.
The difference between WPA and WPA 2 are:
    - They are two kinds of internet connection.
WPA uses dynamic key encryption , which means that the key is constantly changing and makes the invasion of a wireless network more difficult than WEP . WPA is considered one of the highest levels of wireless security for your network and is recommended if your devices support this kind of encryption . Newer routers offer WPA2 security . WPA2 is compatible with WPA , but offers higher security level . In fact, it meets the high standards of many government agencies . If the router and computer support WPA2 , this should be your choice.
If you need any help or if you find some difficult setting up it you can contact Apple Support.
I am sure that they can help you with that.
I am sory for the delay. I holpe that you solve your issue.

  • Making iTunes automatically change track info of playlists

    Hello all,
I'd like to know if there is a way to automatically change song info of all the tracks in a specific playlist.
More specifically, I'd like to know how to make itunes automatically change the Grouping of songs as I add or remove them from any given playlist.
Ultimately, what I'd like to be able to do is see which songs are set to sync with my iPhone and which aren't when I'm looking through my entire music library.
Maybe there's a solution using Automator or Applescripts. I tried using smart playlists, but those seem to only be able to populate a playlist based on track info, which is the opposite of what I want to do.
Thank you all in advance for your help,
    Scott

  • How do I stop Genius from recommending songs and albums that are already in my iTunes music library?

With greater and greater frequency, Genius is recommending songs and albums that are already in my music library. Up to 80% of the recommendations!. I am hesitant to give these suggestions a thumbs down, as I like the songs (afterall, I own them) and don't want to give the impression that I don't like the artist, genre, etc. as I appreciate how Genius works, when it does work.
I have updated Genius and updated iTunes Match, to no avail.
This quirk -- recommending music already in my library -- used to be a rare event. Now, most of the recommendations I get are for music I already own.
    How can I fix this?

To be a little bit more accurate the said book sits in my Documents on my Macbook,  purchased through iTune for free in iTunes Store>Books. I can find it with Finder on my Macbook. It says it is in my Documents but it does not appear in the Documents folder in my Dock. Great! Even the iTunes Store says it is downloaded already. And why when I search for it with Finder on my Mac and click on the result does a window open up full of comoter language? I need some help.

  • Why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??

why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??
for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.
i am trying to put in travel dates so any help on how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

    alsdman,
Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

  • ITunes 11 changes artist and album information

Since iTunes 11 I cannot rename artist name and album information and have it stick.. I sort by last name and always delete the sort information in the sort tab.  After restarting my Mac I find the information in sorting has reappeared and the artist name is again sorted by first name in the library.  In the info tab, the artist name is still listed last-name-first, and the album info is as I changed it..  How can I hack iTunes 11 to leave the sorting information blank?

Yes, others are seeing this. Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both). I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself). There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time. 2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896#26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file.
