Why is iTunes freezing (dreaded beach ball!) whenever I've played internet radio for a while, say 20mins or longer?

So, after a period of playing internet radio (various stations), the station stops and I find then that iTunes has frozen with the beach ball spinning.
I'm hoping that someone in the community can provide some advice.

Hard to say. It sounds like things are pretty scrambled. What happens is the free space that is left is fragmented into thousands of different places on the drive. So any disc writing activity takes super long and locks things up.
I would recommend posting on the MBP thread http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1149&start=0 This is more of a system rescue problem than an itunes issue.
Good luck, Matt.

    Yup same here
I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.
If you find a fix please, please let me know, I have just been throwing hardware at it with no joy at all

Ok will check, as of right now I have 82.57gb free, that's plenty of space will check the disk though using disk utility. Also I am now downloading the update from the apple website instead of going through software update

  • Constant freezing and beach balls

I've skimmed other posts and seen that it usualy is a hard drive issue. My question, though, is that most of those posts seem to relate to people having chnaged the computer's original hard drive to something different. My computer's out of the box; haven't changed anything. It's been doing constant 5-45 second freezes and beach balls but when I brought it in to the genuis bar, they took it in - then gave it back to me exactly the same, because it passed every single test. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I bought it in November 2010 (Macbook Pro, 13"), and it's running worse than my housemate's older computer yet supposedly nothing is 'wrong' with it.

    Hi a,
It may be a lack of RAM. How much do you have?
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help.

    (PageOuts explained and “thrashing”) http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
    http://querieslinux.blogspot.com/2009/07/what-is-difference-between-swapping-and .html
Sometimes a process can run amok and use more of the CPU than it should, potentially causing a slowdown and/or heat issues and/or other issues. To check on this, first use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking thisright after starting up may not show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities> open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > click on the column heading titled % CPU (this will update continuously, showing the percentage each process is using) > toward the bottom left of the window, click on CPU (this will show % Idle, which will also tell you how much of the CPU is being used).
It may also be due to a corrupt file or OS and reinstalling the OS could fix it.
It may also be due to certain applications which need updating.

  • Spinning beach ball whenever I try to rebuild small thumbnails

I get the spinning beach ball whenever I try to rebuild iPhoto's small thumbnails. It gets about half way thru the process before hanging. Maybe there's a corrupt file?
I should just forget it (there is no real problem with the thumbnails, I just wanted to see if a rebuild would improve performance), but now it's bugging me.
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

    1. Back Up. Have you backed up? Are you Sure?
    2. Download BatchMod from

  • Why can't i sync and why is itunes freezing

Why does itunes freeze everytime i turn it on now? It drives up my CPU usage to a 100% and freezes and then i can't sync my music. Iam getting sick of this, i never had these issues before.

Connect the iPad to your PC
    Launch iTunes
Select the iPad on the left side under "Devices"
Click on the Apps Tab in the iTunes window on the right side
Click on all of the apps that you want to sync to the iPad
Click on the Sync Apps heading
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of the iTunes window on the right.
iTunes will sync only content that you have selected to sync. If the content is not selected - with checkmarks - iTunes will remove the content from the device.
If you select the Automatically Sync New Apps box at the bottom of the list of apps - all new apps transfered into iTunes or downloaded to iTunes on your computer - will sync to your device.

  • Dreaded Beach Ball

I used migration assistant to copy files from old G5 powermac to new macbook. It took 15hrs to copy about 20gb which seemed to long. Then many of the files and settings I'd hoped would be copied were not. But ok, I can reistall/reconfigure as necessary although I could have done that without using Migration Assistant.
Anyway, the bigger problem is: the old G5 now won't launch OSX properly since disconnecing the firewire link - the dreaded beach ball appears and spins away infinitely. I can make no moves whatsoever.
    Any ideas anyone?

Actually wise to try Data Recover II even before touching it with Disk Warrior, and see if it will find files you need.
Then, create some bootable backups, clone your drives, have a small drive that is only used for emergencies.
Create a disk image (sparseimage) if possible with SuperDuper as backup of small 20-40GB image of your emergency boot volume.
Pick up a WD Caviar SE16 or RE2 500GB $145-165. Very fast and near silent.
I'd recommend Intech Speedtools instead to map out bad sectors, test the integrity of a drive, and do some benchmarking. It also has a thorough (45 minute) SMART diagnostic test.
Even after using everything Disk Warrior 4 can do, TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is also useful to correct files and find things DW skips.

  • All of a sudden my iTunes 10.1.1.4 will not connect to internet radio

    Hi all,
All of a sudden yesterday, my iTunes 10.1.1.4 will not connect to internet radio. It has otherwise been working fine for almost two years.
My internet connection is working fine for web browsing and email.
I ran the iTunes diagnositcs and it showed me how to go in to the Windows Firewall settings to check to see if there was a connection... there was already one for iTunes in the list of accepted connections. Just to be sure, I created a new iTunes connection exception and it didn't help.
The iTunes diagnostics test shows all information as being normal except this info, pasted in below, about the Firewall test...
    Firewall Information
    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is NOT enabled in Windows Firewall.
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was unsuccessful.
    The network connection timed out.
But this information is partially incorrect, according to the Windows Firewall settings themselves.  My Windows Firewall settings show that iTunes is indeed enabled in Windows Firewall.
I can access the iTunes store, but there doesn't seem to be any test in the iTunes diagnostics that makes it test to see if it is connecting to the iTunes internet radio server.
Is there possibley a current problem happening with the iTunes internet radio connection?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi movem,
Are you saying that Apple has changed the URL for every internet radio station in the entire iTunes radio station library?... or are you suggesting that just some of the internet radio stations in my playlist changed their own URLs?
It seems unlikely that it happens to be that every single internet radio station in my playlist of a hundred radio stations all happened to change thier URLs at the same time, since all of the stations in my playlist will not play from that playlist.
When I went through and found some of the radio stations in the giant default internet radio station library in iTunes, I found some of my old ones that were in my playlist and they play fine and they can be put in to a new playlist and they play fine there too, but the very same stations still will not play from my old original playlist.
So it makes sense if you are saying that Apple has somehow changes all the URLs for all the radio stations in iTunes, because that make sense since they all play from the main radio library.
But, otherwise, to say that all the radio stations in my playlist happened to change their own URLs at the same time, that would be a bit far fetched.
Did you get some news from Apple that this happened, one way or the other?
PS: I'm having a hard time finding a few of the stations that were in my previous, original playlist as well... some of them have either disappeared, changed categories, gone off the air or changed their names.
    Thanks,
    numetro

  • My iPad isn't locking automatically after I have been listening to iTunes Radio for a while what do I do? Thank you

My iPad isn't locking automatically when I listen to iTunes Radio for a while. I checked my auto lock settings and it is set to 2 minutes but it isn't locking when I listen to iTunes Radio

iTunes radio and Pandora are designed to play after the screen turns dark so you can listen to music without wasting energy on a lite screen. The main thing is that the screen goes dark after two minute. Also after listening to iTunes or Pandora when you are done be sure to double click the home button and swipe up to close the app.

  • Dreaded Beach Ball Back in Apple Mail 10.8.2

Yup, is it back the dreaded spinning beach ball is back in Apple Mail (10.8.2). I am writing this _itch note while I wait for the dreaded spinning beach ball to stop.
It is now making Apple Mail unuseable AGAIN!
10.8.2 has also cause a few other issues. Apple needs to slow down and test these updates before we update.

Hello folks. I wanted to try to help with Apple Mail. I may have a resolution. Below I (1) explain the issue; (2) offer background; and (3) describe how I took care of it with help from Apple Support.
Here is the issue. I started to get the spinning beach ball. I would force quite Mail, relaunch, and it took maybe 10 tries and it would run okay for about 5 minutes before freezing again. This happened for a full day.
Here is the background. There are two facts that may or may not be relevant: (a) I was one of the 1.1% who lost Apple mail access for 48 hours back in September 2012; and (b) I just upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion when this problem arose. Additional background. I have a .mac account, a gmail account, and three Exchange accounts associated with my job.
Here is how I took care of it. I tried everything.
    Force Quite
    Rebooting
    Reinstalling Mountain Lion
    Deleting Mail preferences
    Deleting all preferences
Rebuilding mailboxes (when the program was running for a moment)
Eliminating bundles/add-ons such as Mail Act-On and Spam Sieve
    Safe Boot
I also tried a guest account on the same machine. Same problem. But my iOS devices worked fine. And Apple Mail worked fine via the web.
Apple Support walked me through all sorts of options, mostly what I tried above. The support guy -- I was passed to the advanced guy -- was actually complimentary, because I listed everything I did, and he said that was all eh would have recommended.
He did give me the top that led to the solution. I am not sure why. But in System Preferences, under Mail, Contacts, Calendars, I turned off all five accounts. Then I turned them on one by one. It seemed as if the Exchange accounts were the problem. With the .mac account enabled, but not the others, Mail launched and I had the spinning beach ball for about 30 seconds, then it worked fine.
However, after I got it working, and I was thinking I'd call IT at work, I tried again, enabling the other accounts (from inside Mail), and it worked fine.
I'm thinking unchecking all accounts from System Preferences. then re-enabling, did the trick. But everything else probably helped as well.
    For what it's worth.

  • Freezes, Rainbow Beach Ball, HELP!

So All i did was delete what i thought were unnessacery folders filled with what i thought were my pictures and audio files i didnt want anymore, they deleted then all of a sudden my itunes, safari, office, iwork, and mail were gone, they werent anywhere to be found or anything so i rebooted everything onto the computer and then whenever i open a webpage with 1 or 2 others open the beach ball comes out and freezes my computer, forcing me to restart it.. happens everyday approx: 5-7 times. How can i stop this? Can i bring it to a apple store and is it possible for them to fix it and it be like new? It bothers me and annoys me, i've had my macbook pro for less than 5 months.. Please someone help me!
    ** Has Warranty**

    Hi Jordan,
Sorry to hear you're having problems. One rule of computer ownership I like to encourage to my users that I support.... Don't ever delete/move/rename a file or folder that you're not absolute certain the purpose and function of on your computer.
Sounds like whatever you deleted caused some havoc. Without having been there to see it, it's difficult to guess, so I won't bother to waste anyone's time.
Have a backup? If not, you can start first by backing up any important personal data you've loaded onto the machine. I'd then proceed with reinstalling the operating system and any of the 3rd party programs you've installed which are not working correctly, like Office and iWork.
The Apple Store may assist you with reinstalling the operating system onto your computer, but their primary support is hardware and software troubleshooting / advice. I know stores use to perform OS installations and such at the Genius Bar, but I'm under the impression that they don't typically do that much anymore. It's worth a visit, if you get stumped on doing the actions yourself, however.

  • Added user accounts all freeze (spinning beach ball)

Why do all user accounts (other than my main administrator account) freeze after logging in. The Finder freezes with the spinning beach ball just when the account seems to have logged in properly. I created new accounts (thinking that my old accounts were corrupted), but the new accounts did the same thing. My main user account is fine. I haven't used the other accounts for a while now, so why would they suddenly have problems now?! Is something corrupted in my system?!
It almost seems like the Finder is waiting for something to load, but it never gets loaded-so it gives me the beach ball while it waits. Is this what is happening? I can't even force the finder to quit. I have to force the computer to shut off by using the power switch.

    Hi Paul
    Try this.
Determine the Username for one of these other accounts.
    Write down this chosen AccountUsername.
In your main admin account, Open Terminal, found in Applications/Utilities, and enter into terminal this command, (substitute the theAccountUsername with the actual account name you wrote down)
    sudo rm /Users/theAccountUsername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
then type in your admin password. It will not appear as you type, then press Return, then type
    exit
    and quit Terminial.
Log out and log into that usernames's account that you just worked on.
    See how that goes.
Note: if you need to Force Quit, try the four key press of Control + Option + Command + Escape to open the Force Quit Dialogue box and try and Force Quit Finder. That may give you a chance to exit normally.
Also by doing those hard shutdowns you may need to run Repair Disk from the boot Installation Disk just to check that the file structure is OK.

  • Why do I get the beach ball, and other weird behavior, while downloading songs from the cloud?

I created a smart playlist to filter out my matched and purchased songs that were less than 256kbps.  I then "select all" (or do them in small chunks this way) and delete the tracks, move them to trash (not from icloud) and then select all again and download the better quality versions.
Many, many times it runs fine for a bunch of tracks and then all of a sudden it locks up with the beachball.
I've had to re-start my mac a few times.  Three times I've had it treat me like this was the first time I've opened itunes.  Had to accept the licensing agreement and re-start itunes match.  Other times it did not make me do this all over again.
Based on stuff I read on the boards I tried deleting the itunes preference file in my user library.  Hasn't stopped the beach ball.
I don't understand why it runs for a bunch of tracks and then just locks up.
Maybe I'm not removing all of the plist files I should but I thought so.
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

Disk Utility has two things (at least my old version does), First Aid and Permissions.  If your drive reports problems when verifying with FA then you have to boot from another drive to try to repair.  Permissions can run on active boot disk. Run FA before Permissions.
On occasion I have had FA report problems when verifying on my active boot disk and I think it was because files were changing and it was seeing errors that weren't really there.  I frequently verify my active drive (quit all applications) and have it report all-clear so usually I verify the active drive and only verify externally if I see an issue.
On the beachball issue, how long do you let it go before force quit?  Some things just take a long time to process, and smartlists can be a pretty heavy demand in iTunes.
