Why is iTunes in safe mode?

What is going on with iTunes, I connected my new iPad and suddenly safe mode freezes me out
and nothing works and I cannot access my iPad through iTunes.  iTunes on my computer is also useless.
What is safe mode , how did it get turned on and how can I turn it off for ever?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Can I back up iTunes in safe mode? Please help!!!!!

My windows vista laptop is about to die and I can only access it from safe mode. I want to back up my iTunes library but it's empty in iTunes when I access it in this mode. It's all still there because the disk drive is still full. Can I back up my library from folders and files through documents and not through iTunes itself? Many thanks.

Normally in C:\Users\<User>\Music. Unless already backed up via other means you should probably backup each <User> folder in C:\Users at a minimum so that you can selectively restore the data later,

  • Why is there no 'safe mode' in my folder and how do i stop Firefox from unexpectedly crashing without it?

Firefox crashes anywhere from startup to shutdown and everywhere in between. Idling, surfing, downloading.. none of these appear specific to my crash. Crash data isn't yet in Canadian English, so i'm not much help there. Far as i can tell, it's apps or memory usage, but without 'safe mode' there is little i can do to get Firefox back to the great browser it once was.

  • Why does Firefox 4 (safe mode) fail to display a gadget with the message "User not signed in", when Firefox 3.6 (including lastest version) does so successfully?

I attempted to access a Google Docs spreadsheet gadget (Piles of Money) in Firefox 4, both normally and in safe mode. In both cases I get a message saying "User not logged in", a link to log in, and a "throbber" that continues without end.
I can successfully view this same gadget using Firefox 3.6 without problem (and have done so for over a year on various, latest versions of Firefox).
I tested both with Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6 in safe mode (to rule out extensions and other changes). In both cases, this was on Windows XP; I have also had the same behavior (albeit without testing in safe mode) on Windows 7.
The same behavior occurs when creating a new gadget of this type, although I've not tested this as thoroughly.
Is this a bug in Google Docs, Firefox 4, or both?
Note the troubleshooting information is from XP, running Firefox 4 in normal mode.

*Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

  • Error Message saying Itunes running safe mode

Everytime I open Itunes I receive an error message stating Itunes exe. has been set to run in compatibility mode for an older version of windows. For best results turn off compatibility mode before you open it.
How do I turn of compatibility mode.
Second question is last night I was updating my Ipod with new music and left it to charge overnight and when I woke up all the music on my ipod was erased and battery was dead. Is this normal or should I be concerned???

  • When I try to open my iTunes in safe mode, it says visual plug-ins have been temporarily disabled

=New version of Quicktime installed but application reports it needs to have that version installed=
Open Application > Utilities > System Profiler and check the Quicktime version in Frameworks vs. the version in Applications.  I recently helped where the person had re-installed their operating system.  It had kept the newer Player application but had reverted to an earlier version of the underlying support framework that works with many applications.  Re-installing Quicktime 7.7 took care of the problem.

  • Why does iTunes only work in safe mode?

I can only run iTunes in safe mode. If I don't use safe mode to open iTunes it will open but freeze and can't do anything from there.

  • Why won't iTunes 10.5 ... open in Safe Mode?

Have successfully performed a Selective Start of the whole PC, to discover that the iTunes freeze/ Not Responding problem persists with everything apart from Microsoft services stopped. But I can't believe Apple would really release a product which was incompatible with basic PC systems, so I'm getting really stuck ...
Anyway, one thing I've noticed in attempting to follow Apple KB advice, is that the Control + Shift method of opening iTunes in Safe Mode for diagnostic purposes, doesn't seem to work. I hold the two keys down whilst clicking on the iTunes exe shortcut ... and nothing happens.
My questions for those wiser than me:
    Am I doing it right?
Assuming I am doing it right, does the failure of Safe Mode opening give any clue as to the underlying problem?
    With many thanks!

I would try restarting your PC. Then attemptimg to install the latest version of iTunes and see if this helps.

  • I keep getting the message itunes has stopped working I can't even open itunes I have tried uninstalling and installing, starting in safe mode but nothing seems to work. Please can anyone help me

I have recently bought a new laptop with windows 7 and when i have tried to install and open itunes i keep getting the message 'itunes has stopped working' itunes then shuts down before i can do anything to fix it. This happens every time I try to open itunes. I have tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling it, starting itunes in safe mode. Nothing seems to work. Please can anyone help.

If and when I finally manage to open it, as soon as I click on a movie to watch, the message "itunes has stopped working" comes up.
Try the following user tip with that one:
iTunes for Windows 10.7.0.21: "iTunes has stopped working" error messages when playing videos, video podcasts, movies and TV shows

  • I have iTunes (11.1.4) and OSX (10.9.1).  itunes becomes unresponsive immediately upon booting up with the pinwheel.  If I open the app in safe mode it appears to be working normally for about 60 secs. and then the pinwheel shows up again.

    I have restart all devices.

    Hey Von2,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. Usually with issues like this, I would recommend starting iTunes in Safe mode - but you have already done that! Great job.
The next step is to isolate the issue further by using another user account:

  • ITunes wont open in a regular window but will open in safe mode. What can I due to open it in a regular window?

I haven't been able to open iTunes since I updated it in march but when I start my pc in safe mode it works. I don't understand it and would like iTunes to work in the regular mode. Quick time works and I did try with a disabled Bonjour. Also uninstalled it and re intalled it and it still wonr work. I am at a loss as to what to do next

I started windows in safe mode then i double clicked on itunes while holding the shift and control key it told me itunes was in safe mode.
Okay ... so you started Windows in safe mode and then started iTunes in safe mode.
Restart Windows in normal mode, and then try launching just iTunes in safe mode. What happens then?
(Trying to work out which of the safe modes you've been applyingis having an impact on iTunes launch.)

  • ITunes will not start - even in safe mode

I have been using iTunes for years and have been happy.  A week ago it refused to open.  I followed most of the instructions that I could find to correct.
Right now I have iTunes and all supporting applications installed.  When I start iTunes in the Program List, the iTune.exe *32 process starts, however, it does not show up as an application.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled, follwoed the instructions for a "fresh" reinstall.  I have been working this for over a week (off and on) and I cannot seem to figure it out.  It will not open in safe mode either.
Has anyone had this problem?  Anyone have ideas?

Yes I did perform this step.  When I set up a new user, the first time I ran iTunes in safe mode it performed a configuration.  Then it simply did not run.  Again, the background process executed and ran.  The application however, did not run.
So you've established it's a systemwide issue. Did you then proceed to carry out the System-wide troubleshooting procedures described in the document? As it says in the document:
If you have the same issue in the new user account, proceed to the "System-wide troubleshooting"       section. If you don't experience the same issue, proceed to the "User-specific troubleshooting"       section.
Click the heading System-wide troubleshooting to expand the section and show the list of procedures.

  • ITunes only works in safe mode. No 3rd party plug-ins installed.

Since the last itunes update I can open and run it in safe mode with no problems but if I open it normally itunes crashes. I tried following the steps for 3rd party plugins that everyone has been posting about but no plug ins are in the two folders that are suggessted in the apple article. Any help is greatly appreciated.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already done the above and things still aren't working, try opening iTunes in safe mode by holding down CTRL+SHIFT as you launch iTunes, then going into Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. If you close iTunes and reopen you may find that it now behaves normally.
