Why is itunes using 94-97% of my cpu, even when idle?

i am running a 2.53ghz macbook pro with snow leopard, and whenever i have itunes running, it hovers around 94-97% cpu usage, even when idle. Whats wrong?

Try initially deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist file and the /Home/Library/Caches/Firefox/ folder. If you have installed any Firefox extensions/plug-ins be sure to upgrade them to the latest versions or uninstall them.

  • LR uses 10% cpu even when idle

I noticed that LR 3.3 consumes 10% cpu all the time even when it sits in the background (and I'm working within an other application and I have NOT started any batch)?!
After putting LR in the foreground (as active application) it consumes less then 5%?!
    What is it doing??
Are there some settings to reduce/switch of background tasks?
(I already switched off memorycard detection for import, and XMP autosave)

    hherbos wrote:
Thank's - it was the RC_ChangeManager Plugin! - I removed it and there's now no notaceable CPU consumption of LR when sitting in the background.
It's really annoying that LR misses a lot of really tiny things that Adobe developers could implement them alltogether in only a some days. But no - you have to install lots of plugins, which lack of the poor LR api.
Well, the SDK is actually pretty complete, and quite powerful. Lr is a heavily threaded application, and this is exposed to some extent by the SDK. For plugin authors, this is really nice. It offers a way to make very powerful additions to Lr that don't belong in the core product, but behave as if they are.
But it means that a poorly written plugin can soak up a fair amount of resources. Note, however, that a plugin cannot totally steal all resources. There is a governor on that, so the worst you will see is this sort of problem -- annoying, maybe, but not disasterous.
And remember that the vast majority of plugins will use the tasks and threads handed to it from the application, and will never exhibit these symptoms. It is only some sorts of plugins written in a specific manner that would ever impact overall application execution profile. So, you could install many plugins and never see a change in behaviour whether 1 or 10 were enabled.  But install and run one that cycles hard on blocking activity and you will see this problem.
There is always a trade-off. Plugins make the application very flexible, but with this flexibility comes some risk. There is no perfect solution and there never will be. (Adobe could never implement all plugin behaviour everyone would want as first-class features in the core product -- this is impossible.)

  • Firefox uses up 10% of processor even when idle. Why?

Firefox 3.6 uses at 10% of processor power even when idle, parked on Google. I have McAfee, which uses 5% to 10% on top.
Firefox loses keystrokes. It gobbles up a lot of memory very fast (did not do this before). After about 2-3 hours of surfing, it uses up 6-% to 70% of processor power to the point I have to reboot.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

If you have an older LabVIEW (6.1 or earlier) you will need to exchange the in port and out port VIs that came with LabVIEW with different ones and install a DLL. The reason is documented here . This link (which is the first link returned when you search ni.com for "in port") explains basically that the OS won't let you until you have kernel level access. The devzone link at the bottom of the refered page will include all of the code that you need to install (VIs and DLL) to make it work.

  • How do I stop all of my music in my itunes library syncing to my iphone 5 even when the songs aren't ticked?

How do I stop all of my music in my itunes library syncing to my iphone 5 even when the songs aren't ticked?

The frustrating part about the restore is that is seems to be finished when it in fact is not.  The restore will look "finish" and your phone will be at the Swipe to Unlock screen. If you swipe and look at your home screen at this point of the restore, you'll see everything is not quite right.  While the process seems to be not doing anything just leave the phone attached and do something else for about an hour.  This part of the process is not mentioned during the restore operation.  I believe there are about two steps to the restore process: 1) restore the phone settings (ringtones, background, notification settings, etc.) and give the user the unlock screen; 2) without letting the user know there is still more to do, begin the slow process of restoring all the music, movies, apps and what not.  It's this second step that causes the confusion.  Nothing lets you know to wait that process out.  I've restored a couple devices from a computer backup and the 2-step process looks the same.

  • Why does iTunes use 100% CPU all the time, hogging my Macbook Air?

Decided to post this here instead of the iTunes forum, since it might be related to hardware too.
New owner of a 2011 13" Macbook Air, core i5 based.
My problem started about 1 week ago, after it had run out of power completely one day. At the first boot after that it was incredibly sluggish, totally unusable. After waiting for 5 minutes and still being unresponsive, I turned it off and then back on. Then it booted fine. HOWEVER, ever since that time I noticed the following behavior:
    - iTunes stays at 100% + CPU all the time, mostly between 100-120%. Even if it's not playing. Even when I deleted the entire library and left it empty.
    - iStats reports CPU idle between 50-65%. However, CPU temperature is still about 55 degrees C (which, I think, is far less than what it should have been with 50% idle cpu). I can confirm the low temperature by touching the chasis.
    - the cursor freezes and jumps every few seconds, making the mac kind of unusable with iTunes open.
This has been going on for 2 weeks now. The problem goes away every now and then (iTunes sometimes goes back to regular CPU usage of 3-5%), but most of the time it's there.
    Help!

Cee Pee You, is a OS modification. Apple recommends that you un-install these prior to a OS update because Apple makes changes to the OS all the time which breaks programs like these.
I avoid Unsanity LLC products like the plague. Notice the company is a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC), which makes it difficult to sue the company in case of a defective or malicious product. So the risk using their products is all yours. Their APE framework modules have been used for malicious purposes because anyone can write a module that uses the APE framework.
I also avoid installing anything that requires a administrative password unless I completely trust the source, like Apple mostly. That admin password is the key to the security of our machines, not to be given out lightly or carelessly.
You'll have to contact Unsanity's [email protected] because what I'm reading online is it's very difficult to remove as it doesn't "exist".

  • Why can't I attach docs to my email, even when I'm in my mac or yahoo account when using an iPad. I'm thinking of returning it because it is a basic tool that isn't supported.

Why can't I attach files when writing an email, even when logged in to my mail account via safari, on my iPad. I'm thinking of retuning it as a big waste of time and money.

Except for the first response, all of you are unhelpful. The email was configured. Apple contacted me about the issue and said that the iPad cannot attach multiple docs to a single email regardless of whether the docs are located on the iCloud, in Pages, or a dropbox. It's operating system is not designed to do so (a stupid error if they are promoting the use of iPads for business and productivity, or even fields like architecture, design, and marketing, or even as an office alternative for remote use in meetings...which they are in professional consultations with offices). It also cannot do this through an alternate email site like a university server, yahoo, gmail, etc via Safari. Apple also cannot recommend a third party App that can do so. What they recommended, and there seems to be a lot of buzz about this being a problem with the iPad on the Internet, is that people go to their website, go to product feedback and go to enhancement requests and request the capacity to attach different types of files other than photos, and the capacity to attach multiple documents to an email. Basic functions...any email user would want. One of the Apple techs even thought it was implausible that they hadn't integrated this function ALREADY, when I called to set up the appointment.

  • ITunes keeps storing files on C drive, even when the library/storage is on another internal drive. It should stop that.

Whatever I do to get iTunes to store it's data and settings on another internal drive, it KEEPS some sort of data/settings stored on the C drive.
A mkdir has been set up already to catch nasty "keep doing that" behaviour. Nevertheless, iTunes dumps stuff on the C drive /documents/mymusic.
Without to receive a technical story (read: a SIMPLE solution that does not feel like a hack), what's the solution.
Why does iTunes not simply ask WHERE to store the files rather than "assuming that the user is stupid and we think for him" attitude.
managing a database or DRM isn't THAT difficult.
Whatever files are within the directory is absolutely fine, as long as the user is allowed to choose that directory.

Did you mean mkdir or mklnk?
By default the iTunes library is stored at C:\Users\<User>\Music. If you play with Windows so that your entire profile is stored on a different drive then the library will be stored inside the profile. If you have used the option to change the location of the media folder to point to another path then you've only changed where the content is stored, not the database and supporting files. In addition if you use this option with an external drive or network share and that location isn't ready when iTunes starts then it will reset the path to the media folder to the default location inside the library folder.
Generally the solution when setting out is to move the entire library to the root of a different drive and then shift-start-iTunes to connect to the library in this new location. See HT1589: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
Since you didn't do that to start with, either start again, or see my post make a split library portable.
There is another chunk of data stored in the %appdata% section of your user profile. If you don't have any iOS devices you can ignore this, but if you have, and have an SSD system drive, then there is merit in relocating the ...\MobileSync\Backup folder to another drive with a mklnk junction/symbolic link as these backup folders can become quite large. Note that junctions/links should not be used to relocate sections of the main library as they will be unraveled if iTunes ever tries to write to the path.

  • ITunes 11.0.4 is shuffling music even when shuffle is turned off

Grrrr. This is really driving me nuts.
I'm using 11.0.4 on my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.8.4).
iTunes will shuffle the music I'm playing even when shuffle is turned off. It will finish track 1 of an album (for example) and then go to 9. or 11. or 7.
What the heck is going on??

    Hi Allen
Many thanks for the links, although i was aware of the sleep proxy and its uses. The problem i'm having does seem to be related to this, although the key difference between what i am (or was) experiencing is the definition of 'occasionally' as mentioned on the page you linked to.
What i was experiencing was the mac mini would go to sleep then 60 second later it would stir, as if being woken to reregister its services with the sleep proxy, then it would go back to sleep. Then around 60 seconds later it would do this again, and so on and so forth until it was fully woken in one way or another.
Now i do seem to have made progress after digging around a little further. I did figure out that it was a bonjour service/ or device that was causing the mac mini to stir And as i mentioned in my previous message this behaviour would cease if itunes was closed or home sharing was turned off. So the only thing on the network that was connected to this was my 2 apple TVs. As a test i unplugged both boxes and put the mini to sleep again. Then i waited and waited and the mini stayed soundly asleep.
I have since plugged the 2 ATVs back in, one at a time, and the mini now seems to be sleeping for around an hour before it wakes, presuming to do the sleep proxy service thingo.
i'm just running another test to prove to myself that it is actually back to a more normal state with both ATVs plugged in, so fingers crossed.
if anyone knows, does this now sound like a normal setup with the way the sleep proxy works?
i suppose i should have done this at the start, but i have 1 airport extreme, and 2 ATVs (and few ipads, iphones and the like all onthe network), if that helps.

Using Firefox 3.6.12 on Win7, Outlook 2003 email. Firefox will not use my Outlook email even when set as the default, or when "always asked" is used. Always tries to open Windows Live when "sending link", or with website hyperlinks for email.

  • Why does iTunes use an iPod Photo Cache at all?

    Hi,
When iTunes is used to synchronize photos to a device, it creates an "iPod Photo Cache" folder.  Why does this folder even exist?
For users that have multiple devices with multiple resolutions (e.g., iPad 3rd Generation, iPad Mini, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3G), the iPod Photo Cache is grow to approximately four times the original size of the photo.  If I have 15 GBs of photos and a 250 GB hard drive, then the combined usage of 75 GBs (15 GB photos + 60 GB cache) is extremely unreasonble.
Device resolutions change often enough (these days) such that having multiple devices is probably more common than having more than one of a single product.  iTunes should be designed to do the real-time conversion (which it already does), but not save it to the hard drive.
Also allowing the ability to change the location of the "iPod Photo Cache" folder would help many users, but not myself since I do not have an external drive.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thank you for your response. I should have clarified. When trying to delete from the library, it gives me the option to delete them from the computer or just from the library. I choose not to delete them from the computer, just the library. As a result, I would not expect the deletions to free up room on the hard drive, but I don't see how it actually increases the space used up on the hard drive. If I delete a song from the library, but not the computer, does iTunes save the song again someplace else (such that there are now two copies of the song somewhere on the system)? That seems to be the only explanation for why the free space on my hard drive would decrease after deleting a song from the library.

  • Why is iTunes using 2gb of my ram?

I noticed that my computer was being really slow and sluggish, so I opened the activity monitor and I saw that iTunes was using 2gb of ram! I didn't have anything playing, downloading, etc. It was just open in the background. I'm running OSX 10.8.5.

I'm not sure why, though quitting iTunes and reopening it brings it back down to normal.

  • Why cant Itunes use a user specified watch folder

The Zune (RIP) watch folders were extremely easy: tell the player where to look and the service will add all music from that location verbatim and automatically rescan, importing any new files added to the folder. Any music I purchased was saved to the watch folder.
This worked long before ITunes (Apple) decided to add their own watch folder. To be honest I do not understand it. I moved my music from my primary music folder over to the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder. I guess the music was imported automatically as the name suggests however no music files remained, just empty artist folders. It seemed to just create more duplicates ( Although it seems duplicates are created whenever I mess with the folders.
Im tired of reading responses to "how-to" forums suggesting that tracks need to added manually. Zune is not given much credit for doing it right the first (and only) time. My point is the inconvenient method is usually posted without reference to an alternative. This alternative should not require third party applications (which are still are not as automated as the processes in Zune).
Sorry for the long post. I have already wrote about my ignorance on the "Automatically add to ITunes" folder. I would give anyone credit for providing any explanation in depth about that feature.

I moved my music from my primary music folder over to the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder. I guess the music was imported automatically as the name suggests however no music files remained, just empty artist folders.
Correct. iTunes only cares about the song files. It creates its own Artist/Album folders based on the ID3 tags in the song files.
It moves (not copies) the files to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Music/ under the new /Artist/Album/ folders.
It seemed to just create more duplicates ( Although it seems duplicates are created whenever I mess with the folders.
You mean in iTunes, you now have duplicate songs?
If the song was already in iTunes and you add it to this folder, it will add it  to iTunes again.
You can delete the duplicates in iTunes (which will delete the duplicate file in the iTunes folder).
