Why is iwork 09 apps SOOOOO MUCH slower to open then MS word on a PC???????

Hi,
I would like to know if other people have noticed this, or it's just on my MBP, that it takes way longer to open a pages document than opening MS word on a 1 yr old computer running VISTA??? ***?
Word opens instantly and on my Mac it takes like 10-12 seconds!!!

There are several factors.
It is not coded identically obviously so it is hard to determine exactly what is being done in the first few seconds of start up. Also to what degree Apple has optimised its performance by writing key functions in machine code.
Another big factor would be the Hard Drive speed in your computer. The small HDs in laptops are markedly slower than desktop models for example. Also how much real and virtual memory is available.
I'm not going to defend Pages just for the sake of it but there are lots of ways making software appear to respond more quickly by partially loading stuff and then making you wait later on. Microsoft for all you know may have preloaded key Microsoft Software on launching Vista on the PC, so it may already have been in memory. You could check in Vista by monitoring what is happening when you launch Word in a process monitor.
Do you have the same number of fonts on both machines?
Also Pages maybe checking other things such as media in iPhoto, iTunes etc.
I suspect it may also have to decompress the resources in its application bundle.
Whatever the reason you should let Apple know:

  • Mavericks is to much slow to open apps

I did a clean instalation on my Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012. My computer has i5 core, 8G of RAM and 500G of HDD. Yes, I don't have SSD, I have HDD.
However, the Mavericks is to much slow to open apps. Any app. How can I change this situation?
The both Linux and the Windows 7 are fastter then Mavericks.
The Apple must resolve this problem!

    Thanks for your replies.
    Eric Root: I going to do it;
w7ox: I installed the system15 days ago. I've had this same problem with Mountain Lion. I've thought the reason was incremental installation.
petermac87: Thank you for your suggestion. My computer is not Mid 2012, but late 2011.

Why my Illustrator CC is now very slow for opening a 2MB AI file (about 5 minutes), at the beginning (1 month ago) it was very fast (10 seconds).

Assuming that you system meets minimal requirements for CC, make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. By saying enough, I try not to cross 3/4 of its capacity but trivially saying, the more free space the better and the faster the drive the better (I've been considering an SSD drive but still running a regular HDD).
If you are on Windows, clean up the %TEMP% folder regularly and keep the disk neat using the defragmentation tool.
Click Start>Run>enter %temp% , wait for the files to load and select all, hit Shift+DEL to remove them permanently.
For the defrag tool, you can use either the defrag /? command from the command line or right-click the drive, click Properties > Tools > Defragmentation>Defragment Now
Other than that it requires deeper analysis to find performance bottleneck.

  • Any free ipad app,so that I can open my Microsoft Word documents

Any free ipad app,so that I can open my Microsoft Word documents

Another one that just opened up yesterday is OnLive. Both OnLive and CloudOn are cloud-based - you're accessing a server to operate Windows programs and files remotely. There are drawback to it, compared to a full program on the iPad (storing your files remotely, requiring strong and constant internet connection), but since they are both free for now (OnLive will offer pay plans for more storage and features, I imagine CloudOn will do something similar) it can't hurt to try them. I'm downloading both and will give them a whirl.
I'm also hoping the rumors that MS is working on iPad versions of Office is true, although I imagine that just like the iWorks programs they'll have less features than the full versions.

It is possible the versions you have are not compatible with your new Mac. Could you please tell us the following:
    1. What OS are you running.
To get this info, click on the Apple on the top left, then select About This Mac. The OS X version is there.
    2. What are the versions of the apps that are giving you problems?
To get this info, double click on the hard drive icon and open the Applications folder. Select an application and right click on it. Then select Get Info. The version number is there.

Not sure I understand your reference to Flip Player - this is not related to the "won't open" problem, is it?

  • CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands

We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed.   Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open.  Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick.  The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off.  Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584.  I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off.  Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity.  Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
    Hope this helps

  • TS3274 Some games we have apps for... Open then shut off and won't stay open.......

Some games we have apps for.......open then shut off and do not stay open... Any ideas?

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't help try quitting the app first then reset the iPad. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
If still no joy try deleting the app an download it again.
Also make sure your iPad has enough free space to operate efficiently. With iOS 7 it is recommended that you have 15-20% of the storage space on the device free.  For a 16 GB device that is 2.4-3.2 GB free. For a 32 GB device that is 4.8-6.4 GB free. For a 64 GB device that is 9.6-12.8 GB free.

  • Why is asynchronous database access so much slower?

Hi, I have an AIR app that loads and parses a data file
(approx 170 MB) and stores the parsed data in a database using the
built-in SQLite functionality. I have two implementations: one
synchronous, another asynchronous, both use transactions. The
synchronous one takes approx 5 minutes to complete. The
asynchronous takes approx 2.5 hours. The choice thus seems to be
between having an unresponsive program for 5 minutes, or having to
    wait too long.
Did anyone else observer this significant difference? Is
there a 'known' reason for it? Is there anything that could
potentially be done to reduce the run time of the asynchronous
    approach?

Thanks for posting your code; that helps a lot. I think
you'll find it instructive to watch CPU usage during the two demos.
    Here's what's going on.
In the synchronous code, you are keeping the application busy
100% of the time because as soon as each insert is complete you
immediately schedule the next one. That's efficient although, as
you note, it makes the application unresponsive for too long a
    period of time.
In the asynchronous code you are also waiting for each insert
to complete before scheduling the next one. The work done behind
the scenes for each insert is therefore greatly expanded:
    1) An event is posted from the UI thread to a background
    worker thread, scheduling the insert
    2) The background thread wakes up
    3) The insert executes on the background thread
    4) The background thread posts an event containing the
results back to the UI thread
    5) The UI thread eventually processes that event, delivering
    it to your code
As you can see, there's a tremendous amount of overhead to
this. This is not really the way the async API is intended to be
used. Instead, try one of the following strategies:
    A) Don't wait for each statement to complete before running
the next one. They'll queue up and run in order, but because the
background thread can process many at once, it runs much faster.
    B) Chunk your synchronous inserts, e.g., run 100 inserts
every 100 msec or so. (You'll have to measure to find optimal
    numbers.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Apps are really slow to open on bound machines

    Hi Guys,
i have a problem that's quite a head-scratcher. I'm assisting a departmental tech at the school I work for with a funny OD problem. There are three problems, and I am not sure if they are related:
    1) Initially the problem was that new users that were created were unable to log in, yet users that were already in OD were able to log in fine. We found a workaround by switching the affected accounts' password types from OD to crypt, then back from crypt to OD.
    2) Users can not access file shares in AFP if the auth type is set to kerberos, yet standard works fine. I tried rebuilding the kerberos DB, but the issue still persists.
    3) Now the problem is that any machines that were bound to OD take a really long time logging in and opening apps. the login window will hang at the first letter of input before continuing with the rest after 30 seconds or so. After the user logs in, apps take 20 bounces or so before they open (e.g. System Prefs or Safari). the accounts are portable homes. the apps are local to the machine.
All the machines are 2008 imacs running 10.5.7 and the server is 10.5.7 on a Xserve Xeon.
Does anyone know where I can get started to resolve these issues? Thanks!

How many users do you have populated in OD?

  • I installed Mavericks Wednesday.  Afterward updates were offered for my iWork '09 Apps.  I installed them, opened a document, and was asked when I closed it if I'd like to update the file to a near format.  I chose "Yes".  That document will not open now

It says that a new version of Pages is required.  The update in The App Store shows that it is version 5.2 AND that it is installed.  Pages claims to be 4.3.  What now?  Thanks.

Pages v5 and IOS Pages v2.1 introduced a completely incompatible document format that Pages ’09 v4.3 cannot open. That document extension remains .pages for added confusion. Due to Pages v5 missing about 100+ features/functionality that were in v4.3, you may find that the file conversion to v5.2 may have filtered content from your older document format.
In Pages v5.2, use File > Export to Pages ’09 and see what remains.
In the future, with both applications installed on your Mac, a double-click of any Pages document will attempt to open it with Pages v5.2. If you want to open a Pages ’09 v4.3 document, you will need to open it directly from the relevant Open dialog, or by right-clicking on the document, and using the Open With > Pages (4.3) menu item. You have already seen the dialog when you attempt to open a Pages v5 document with the older Pages.
Here in the Pages for Mac community, we are recommending that users strictly continue to use Pages ’09 v4.3 until a time in the future where Apple has reconstructed Pages v5 or v6 into an acceptible WP application.

  • Why won't my apps on my iPhone 4 open/launch?

I brought a new iPhone 4 a few days back.
    Apparently, this problem started today.
When I press on an app, the screen turns pitch-black for a second and then it goes back to the home screen.
This problem is only with the apps I downloaded from the App Store, but the apps that were already installed in my iPhone 4 still work.
    I tried:
    ● Turning off my iPhone many times (using the red slider when you hold the button)
    ● Downloading a new app from the App Store
    ● Deleting some apps
    ● Closing all of the running apps in the background
    ● Charging the iPhone to full battery
    ● Reset all the settings (not everything on the iPhone, just the settings)
    Please help me!
    -MysticalCrystal

It sounds like a software glitch - backup your phone (through icloud or itunes or both)
and restore your phone as a new iphone by going to settings-> general-> reset all settings
see if it works now -> if it does you can try restoring from backup and see if happens again-> if it does something is corrupt in the backup and you need to keep it as a new iphone
if it does not-> take to apple store but the restore should fix it

  • Safari very slow to open, then freezes

Safari takes about 2 minutes to open when I open it for the first time. After that, it is still slow. In fact, sometimes it will freeze and take a couple of minutes to unfreeze on its own. I also have Quicktime on my Windows XP computer and it has been suggested that in the Mac, the Quicktime plugins caused the problem with the delays. Assuming this may be correct, it shows eight plugins labeled "npqtplugin2.dll", "npqtplugin3.dll" etc. through number 8 in the program files. If I wanted to disable these which would I work with? Also, should this have this many?
I have tried to clean out the computer and disable applications (even the virus protection) and have reinstalled Safari a couple of times, but the delays were still there. I do use Java 6. I am open to any suggestions to solve this delay problem.
    Thanks

I have an issue with safari. At first it was fast to boot up. Then over the months it got slower and slower until just recently it would not boot up at all. When you click on the icon the hard drive acivity light comes on and stays on and the drive runs continuously but nothing ever boots up. The computer has to be restarted to get the drive to stop and behave normally. All other software runs normally, including Itunes. I have made sure I have all of the latest updates for both Apple and Windows. I have uninstalled safari and reloaded from the web site but it does exactly the same thing...it makes my hard drive run but that is it. Memory? I run other very large applications including drafting/rendering/animation and mech/elect cad programs with no such issues. Apple tech support won't respond to e-mails....
    Any suggestions?
