Why is .jpg unrecognised format?

I am trying to import some files (which are scans of photographs) into iPhoto and a number of them will not import. A window opens with the message "This is an unreadable file" and "The file is in an unrecognisable format". All these files are .jpg, so I am unsure what is unrecognisable about them. Can anyone give me some advice as to how to load these into iPhoto.

Some possibilities:
Wrong colour profile - iPhoto supports RGB not greyscale or CYMK
Invalid Metadata - Open and Save in Preview, then see will they import
Damaged Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Damaged QuickTime Installation: Re-install the OS

Is it for one photo or for all photos?
Try using Image Capture rather than iPhoto, hopefully that fixes things.

Don't know why you're formatting all the time, but remember to de-authorize BEFORE you format.

How to save and retrieve jpg/gif format image in db2

Here am facing problem to insert jpg/gif format image in my database. And at the same time i would like to know how to retrieve that and how to display that image in my html page. So please help me in this matter.

"Unrecognisable Format" when trying to open file in EXCEL for Mac

Hi guys,
The other night I left my comp on, with a microsoft excel file open, and the battery went flat. Obviously the computer closed down, but the next day when I tried to open this particular file, all I can get is "This file is in an unrecognisable format", and it won't open.
Can anyone help? Is there a way of reverting to an earlier saved version of this file? (eg from the day before?)

Ooops you wont do that again
That file is probably dead and gone
Do you have a backup that you made previously if not that's something else to put right urgently
I haven't used Excel for over 10years so you will need to check the help files but at one time I thought it did a save of the open file every so often as AppleWorks does on the Mac. If so find where it is, help files again, it may not be under the name you called it but a reference given by the software.
Also try a search on the name and or date they may show it up

Why are my RAW format files no longer supported?

Using a Mac OS X 10.5.8 with versions of Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Bridge CS5 and Camera Raw Plug-in.
Shot .CR2 raw format photos on my Canon EOS 450D (Same as Rebel XSi)
Have always been able to open them successfully in Camera Raw and Photoshop. Now says that the files and/or my camera model/make is not supported by the Camera Raw Plug-in nor by my Photoshop.
Tried converting to DNG first with Adobe DNG Converter 7.1 and even that says that the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.
Previous raw files taken with the same camera on the same computer with the same (or even earlier) versions of all these programs have always worked. I can still open those successfully too. However just these new ones I cannot. Nothing has changed about my camera in that time...
What can I do and why is it that these files are no longer supported?

ACR 6.7 and ACR 7.1 RC can open XSi CR2 files at least on Windows 7. I just checked.
However, on Windows, at least, the DNGC 7.1 RC has a quirk in that when you want to convert a folder of CR2s to DNGs, you have to click the Select button when the folder is highlighted in the file selection dialog and the folder listed in the location area of the file selection dialog. You cannot click INTO the folder and then click Select, which sounds like what you are doing. If you do click into the folder and click Select it’ll say there are no compatible files that exist. I think previous versions of the DNGC would recover properly if you clicked into the folder before clicking Select.
Since your files cannot be opened in ACR, either, then perhaps they are corrupted. You might post a download link to one of them in a message here so others can have a look. If you don’t have a large file hosting service, then set up a free account on www.dropbox.com or www.yousendit.com or similar, upload your file, there, then post the public download link, here, in a reply.

Jpg: Open a copy in PS without adjustments - why still .jpg?

I apologize if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything on this issue: My problem is that I usually shoot jpgs and often have to edit some files in photoshop. I would like to edit a copy of the original photo, but without any changes from lightroom applied, so that I can adjust those later on, after I finished editing the photo in photoshop (mainly exposure/color settings). There is one issue with this workflow: If I choose to "edit in photoshop" in lightroom, and in the settings select "edit a copy without lightroom adjustments", even though the file copy settings indicate a tiff or psd file to be created, I always get a .jpg file copy (called filename-edit.jpg). This is annoying, because I often create layers in photoshop and if I try to save this file I would have to loose the layer (because jpg files of course cannot save layers) or change the filename, which is bad for the workflow because I have to sync lightroom which can take quite a while.
So, my question I guess, is: is there a way to force lightroom to create a copy in the indicated format (tiff or psd) when selecting "edit in photoshop without lightroom adjustments"? Or am I doomed to always get a jpg file then?
BTW, I use lightroom 1.41 and everything works as expected in either "edit original" or "edit with lightroom adjustments".

Interesting behaviour and one I can confirm. Only Adobe can indicate if this is intended or a bug.

Why is the date format tied to regional settings

i like my date/time format to be customized to my liking. for me, the only way i can do this is to set my region to be the uk, even though i live here in the us. i find this kind of annoying since this causes some weird things to happen in other apps as well. for example, visiting the apple link would take me to the uk site instead of the us site. i understand that this is because i chose the uk in the international settings. but it's the only way i can get the date format that's close to what i want. is there a reason why apple doesn't allow you to customize the time/date format separately from choosing what country you reside in?

"We" are users like you, with no knowledge of why Apple does or does not include particular features. In this case, I'd guess for simplicity, but that's just a guess.

Exporting and importing movies in iPhoto - unrecognised format

I am trying to export just a few movies from iphoto in my user account, to my daughters parental support account on the same mac. (I imported from her camera to my account by mistake and deleted them from her camera, but want them only to be on her account ..... )
It has worked fine for the photos.
I am selecting the movie files. File export, kind original. this exports a .AVI file which i have put in a shared folder. I can reimport these .AVI files into my iphoto but when i fast user switch to her account , open iphoto, and try to import i get an error message saying that the file could not be imported due to an unrecognized format. I have spent ages trying to get this to work, checking file permissions etc, but i cannot get the movies across.
An additional frustration is that if i create a new folder in the shared area, or rexport the files again from my iphoto ( i was trying exporting in all the different kinds to see if that works), then the new files i exported do not show up in either my daughters finder or iphoto files.Why is this? Are they hidden? and if so why do these ones not show but the first ones i exported do show?

AVI is not a native mac video format, and it will depend on the codec used in the AVI, if Quicktime can play it. Do you have additional codecs installed in your account, that are not installed for all users and missing in your daughter's account? For example Perian, or Flip4Mac? Then install these too for your daughters account.

Your camera uses AVCHD, like the Panasonic, so it might. Note that you cannot drag a MTS clip into Aperture to import it, but Aperture does find the clips buried in the AVCHD file structure when importing from the SD card.
Hopefully someone with that camera will jump in here, but if not:
Do you have iPhoto on your system? Try that.
Is there an Apple store nearby? Take your card to the store and try it with Aperture.
What is your primary video editing software? If Aperture won't read your video files directly, then your video editor can likely export to a format Aperture can use.

Why does jpg export change my document size?

This is a minor annoyance I noticed after I upgraded to CS6.
This is the correct size of my InDesign document...
So why do the dimensions change a fraction of an inch when I export my ID document as a jpg?

Well you can't have half a decimal pixel.
Like - 6685.2 pixels
So it needs to round it somehow.
How is it if you start an InDesign document using Web instead of Print in the File>New Document
Then open that in Photoshop?

My office cohorts are unable to save the jpgs I send in emails as jpgs; they end up as pngs. Any answer as to why? Any workaround I can suggest?

I've found the answer: when I uncheck the "Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" box, then all is well and they recieve them as jpegs. Go figure, do just the opposite and their "friendly."

Why wont jpg images from macbook open on Windows PC?

I have loaded jpg images from my nikon camera into iphoto on macbook pro.
No editing was done.
Then i copied then to a usb and attempted to open on a windows pc .
They wont open in either windows or photoshop on windows pc.

You may be burning the disk as a data CD. Make sure that you're burning the disk as an Audio CD (iTunes Burning preference). You can also burn an MP3 CD if your tracks are in MP3 format and your player will handle an MP3 disk.

when i try to load photos [in particular downloaded from e:mails] to Photobucket they are Not recognised in their
format...how do i convert them...? My imac is 2 months old

Photobucket can upload these file types, if its not one of them use Preview to save to a jpeg:
gif, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp

Why did our standard format Quicktime movie switch to widescreen preview in iDVD?

We created wedding videos on Final Cut Express 2 and converted them to Quicktime movies. When you play the videos in Quicktime, they show up in standard format (not widescreen). When we put the movies into iDVD 7.1.2, one of the movies shows up as widescreen and the other stays in standard format. We want them in standard format (which is how they were shot).
Any suggestions?

In iDVD top menu Project/Project info - Here too - You may be must select 4x3 size.

• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.

I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding

• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to

• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Also do when problems occures
• Trash iDVD pref. file and
• run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving
