Why is Lightroom 5.3 Library module too slow to be productive

6 seconds to select three images in the grid??  I've done all the things recommended by the FAQ's for optimizing Lightroom's performance.  My PC setup as reported by Lightroom is below.  My catalogue contains fewer than 30,000 images.  I don't use stacks.  I don't automatically write to XMP.  I'm running LIghtroom alone on a freshly started Windows 8 session.  All my other software runs fine.  Version 4 seemed to run fine.  Am I doing something wrong?  Are others having this problem?

  • Why are Lightroom 4.1 Slideshow Module Export Video 720p and 1080p ending up as Interlaced Video?

In Lightroom 4.1 (Windows 7 64 bit) when I create a slideshow in the Slideshow Module, use Export Video 720p or 1080p, the properties of the export do not agree with the name of the preset suggesting a fundamental discrepancy in what is stated and what is.
The MediaInfo properties readout for this type of export is showing Scan Type = Interlaced and Scan Order = Top Field First. How is this possible for 720p and 1080p which are designations for progressive video (no Fields)? However, the readout will show the expected frame rates, 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 for 720p and 1080p respectively.
I suspect that this is not a misread by MediaInfo since a Mac user shows the same "interlaced" & "upper field first" information using a Mac Video Specs application for the properties readout for the Slideshow Module Export Video 1080p.

The LR slideshow module has had problems since its initial introduction and the issues have not been fixed in LR4.1. There is also an issue of resample artifacts (jaggies) when using portrait orientaion images in a slideshow on Windows platforms.. See this thread:

Here's an excerpt from the above thread link:
LR has at least three different implementation versions, concerning this LR Slideshow Module behavior:
                             Stroke Border           Portrait Images
Mac OS:            Causes softness         OK (no resample artifacts)
Windows Vista:  No issues                    Resample artifacts (jaggies)

  • Lightroom 5.7 Map module so slow it is almost useless

I've used iPhoto and Aperture a lot but because Apple are withdrawing these programs soon apparently, I decided to upgrade to Lightroom.  Everything else works fine, but the map section is just so slow.  The map layers take far too long to download.  My internet connection is 8 Mbit broadband.  I'm upgrading to fibre optic later this week, so I'll see if that makes any difference - but I see no reason why it should.

Yeah, you can't change folders in a number of the modules.  However, the Any Source plugin lets you do that.

  • LR 5 Library module issues

I have read all the problems that other have been having with LR5 & the library module running slow. I have been using LR5.2 since it was released with no issues of slowness, the only issue I had was that sometimes the position of images shown in LR did not match what was shown in Finder. Opening & closing LR seemed to correct this.
    I have a Mac with Version 10.8.5. 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4gb 1333 Mhz Memory & 3Tb hard drive. I have 56,000 images in one catalogue.
Everything was fine until this morning. Last night I uploaded 700 images. This morning all was fine. I had shot some images to use for HDR, so decided to update Photomatix Pro HDR from version 4 to version 5. Despite following the instruction the automatic download & install did not load the plug in into LR & it kept loading version 4. I deleted Photomatix 4 & 5 from the computer & re-loaded version 5 only.
From then on the library module has locked up & I can not get access to the catalogue. I have logged out & back in several times. I have a LR back-up & have exported the key words to a back up file.
I am a photographer not a computer expert so if anyone is able to make any suggestions they will need to be simple.
Is uninstalling both Photomatix Pro & Lightroom & reinstalling them an option?
What do I need to carefull with so as not to lose information on the images?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Neil Vincent

I had been using Photomatix Pro 4 as a plug-in to LR, I upgraded to Photomatix Pro 5, it appeared to have installed correctly.
When it first happened I was in the library module as that is from where you access the plug in. I tried the plug in Photomatix Pro 5 for the first time & the HDR image which was created did not re appear in LR as it was supposed to. I tried a second time & the same thing happened, the image created did not appear in the LR light table view. I scrolled through the LR files on the LHS of the screen & found two “ghosted” image icons (still in LR library module). I tried to delete these from within LR & it would go through the normal delete screens but right after I clicked that I agreed to “remove them from the disc” a message would come up saying something like  “they could not be deleted as they were aliases”. (I cannot recreate this message as the library module is frozen)
I tried a number of times but the same. I went to Finder to the original folder containing these “aliases” to delete them from there but they were not there. I searched Finder using “date created” but there were no files of that name.
Using a program called Appcleaner I deleted all versions of Photomatix from the computer & then downloaded & re-installed Photomatix Pro 5. This time it worked with LR creating a HDR & loading it back into LR in the correct position. LR Library module was working fine at this point.
The two “aliases” were still showing so I decided to close LR to see if that cleared them. When I reopened LR the files down the LHS in the library module did not all “fill” some were greyed out, when I tried to scroll down I noticed that some folders were missing. As I used the slider on the LHS to scroll down it would not go passed a point about halfway down the screen, it would let me go back up but not down passed that point. I was not able to expand the parent folders (the visible parent folders are six months shooting, inside each is the  individual shoot folders) but if I selected one of the parent folders slowly it would show all the images in that folder on the light table view but I was not able to scroll down those photos.
I opened & closed LR several times with the same result. I completely shut down the computer & re-opened LR with the same result. I then changed modules to Develop module to see what was happening there, all was good, the same with the other modules. I then tried to go back into Library module & the tab in the top right hand corner changed from Develop to Library but rest of the screen stays as the develop module screen. The tabs along the top line only read Lightroom/File/Edit/Window/Help none of the other library module tabs are there, if I go into develop they are all as they should be. It stays like this... frozen, I can go back into the other modules & they work.
While writing this email I switched back to the Library module & received an error message for the first time. It read “an error occurred when attempting to change modules”
I have replied to your email directly as when I went to the forum I could not find a reply key. Where is this?

  • Library module issues

I've lost "Catalog and Folders" in the Lightroom 4's Library Module.  How do I get them back??

Right click on "Collection", "Public Servce Options" or the graphic mark at the bottom of where the other two were on the left side of Library module and reclick them so the checkmark shows up.

  • Why does the library module looks so different from develop

Ok, so the library module on my lightroom 4.4 does not match my develop module. Especially in the noise reduction department. It's like I haven't even made any changes and yes I zoomed to 1: 1 to check the differences between the two and they are still there.
Also when I export it looks like the library module's version of the photograph, washed out and filled with noise.
Is this a glitch? What the heck is going on? This just started doing this to me today.

Please let me know how to adjust the master volume.  I am having the same problem with my Garageband '09 (version 5.1) and the sound fades out after about 18 seconds when creating a ringtone.  Also, when I move the yellow bar anywhere but the beginning, the music plays but no sound at all.
    Please help!
    Thank you!

  • Why is Lightroom 5.4 so slow in Publish services and Book module?

I've been using Lightroom 5 for a few months now. I'm using the latest version (5.4) and have been experiencing extremely slow performance in two main areas:
    1) When in the Library module and I select (or scroll down to) the Publish services on the left it pauses for 10+ seconds before displaying the valid services. Changing between different services also takes quite a while. I now have the services minimised unless I need them.
    2) When in the Book module and I try and change a page layout the first time I select the drop down the cursor changes to a spinning circle for a while. Sometimes it comes up with the dialog saying Lightroom has experienced problems and I can either close it or wait. It usually recovers without any input from me. However, the first time I select the drop down it will close without me being about to select anything. I then have to press it again and wait for the layouts to load before I can scroll through the list. This occurs on every page. It takes probably 10-20 seconds to be able to select a new page layout. Applying the layout is very quick.
I have upgraded my PC from a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB DDR2 RAM to an I5-4670 with 16 GB DDR3 RAM and not seen much improvement in either area. In both configurations I used an SSD for the application and catalog. The photos are stored on a NAS but this has not shown any performance issues in browsing/editing photos. A review of Task Manager's CPU and RAM loading during these operations does not indicate the CPU or RAM is maxed out. I've never seen the RAM go above ~7 GB used and CPU loading (average across all 4 cores) is usually less than 50%.
Generally the upgraded PC is showing a significant improvement in Lightroom's performance but these two areas are still painfully slow.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues or have any ideas on what I can do to try and improve its performance??
    Thanks,
    Brett

    Hi Brett,
I got the same issue and I am very frustrated about it.
Its the same thing I experienced in Lightroom 4 and its still not fixed. I cant use the book module because of that. So BLURB is not getting my money. :-(
I am waiting for that fix since more than a year, but Adobe says its a Problem which appears only for a small group of users.

Lightroom 5 is freezing in the Library module. I can't access folders or import photos!!! HELP!!!

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

  • Email Photo option Greyed out in Loupe View in Library Module on Mac in Lightroom 5.7.1

In Lightroom 5.7.1 on Mac OX X Yosemite, when in the Library module, in Grid View the option to Email photo is available; however, when in the Loupe View, the Email Photo menu option is greyed out.  I have seen this question posted on the web and there are no answers anywhere.  Please address this issue as soon as possible since this appears to bug.

    Hey Scott,
After expermienting extensively (well relatively speaking), I found that hardware wise, there needs to be a AC3 decoder on the end where the audio is being sent. And without that chip there the AC3 option won't work weather or not you can get it showing. Our interfaces don't have this AC3 option so theoretically speaking we would have to create/purchase an AC3 to Analogue converter, and take the outs to our monitors/inputs of our interfaces. There seems to be no easy hardware or software work around, because even if the software workaround were to get the AC3 option available it seems that it sends the AC3 option out over the SPDIF/ADAT connection meaning the software didn't really convert it it just made it possible to send the signal. So I didn't have any luck. In the end it seems you need a AC3 decoder/DA converter to 5.1 out which they sell but not at a reasonable price. Hope I was of "informative" assistance, if not any actual help towards solving the problem.

  • After installing lightroom 5.7 update, the library module has become painfully slow at times. I am running windows 5.7 64 bit.

I am running windows 5.7 64 bit. I have made no other changes. any help with this.
I used to be able to cull in lightroom in the survey mode but the delay is too slow.

I returned to previous 5.5 version of lightroom and it still has the same symptoms. Very slow in library and survey mode. I tried it on various catalogs with the same result. I purged the cache it did not seem to help. Are there any other ideas?
    thanks,

  • Lightroom pictures blurred in Library module - Rendering: Larger Preview...?

I am using the latest version of Lightroom running on a system using Vista Ultimate 64bit OS, an Intel Core i7 processor, 12 Gb of ram and two nVidia GTX295 video cards.  I problem that I am having is in the Library module, where, when I move from picture to picture, some pictures, at random, will load blurred.  The caption, in the lower center of the picture starts with "Loading from Previews" then goes to "Rendering: Larger Preview," and it stays there.  I can move to another picture which may or may not load properly.  This issue does not seem to affect the Develop module; pictures which load blurred in the library mode are crisp and clear in the Design module.
I did not have this problem running Windows XP!
Any suggestions to address this issue?
p.s. I have read a previous thread which suggested that deleting the preference file might be a solution.  I have done this, without success!
    jwp

My suggestions would be to backup and check the integrity of your catalog, to render standard previews for all images, and if necessary to delete the previews file and directory.

  • Why do I get an error message when I tried to switch from Library module to the Develop module?

I've been using my LR3 for a few months but this is the first time that I got an error message when I was switching from the Library module to the the Develop module.  I have a macbook pro with 500 GB HD.  I am currently using 450 GB already.  Anyone have an idea how I can fix this.  Thank you.

Should we use our telepathy to figure out error message?

  • Lightroom 3 not creating folders in Library module

Normally a folder corresponding to the directory I imported my images from is added to the FOLDERS bar in the LIBRARY module.
I didn't realize until today, when I tried to go back to some older photos, that since the beginning of August LR has not been creating a folder with each import. The only way to navigate to those photos is using CATALOG -> ALL PHOTOGRAPHS.
I tried adding a folder with the "+" but that just tries to import photos that are already in my catalog.
Is there a setting that changed? Is this a bug?
    Thanks,
    -Andy

Ah, well, that makes sense.  If you are "adding" them, then the images themselves are merely being referenced, and LR will not create new folders for them, but use the folders you already have them in.  So in order for them to be in the correct format, you'd have to have them in the correct location you want them referenced as.
If you do, indeed have them in the proper format as you listed, then your most likely problem is you are selecting only the bottom layer, i.e, the final month folder for import.
If you want the entire import path to show up, I believe you have to select the top level one, and use "include subdirectores" to let it find them below that.
This will, of course, scan all of your other folders under there, and most likely identify lots and lots of duplicates, which it will then ignore.  But it will take a bit longer for the software to relalize it already has them and uncheck the ones it thinks it knows about.
From my point of view, doing something similar, I use "move" instead to get it right without having to scan all the potential duplicates.  It doesn't take much more time if the images are on the same disk already.  Moving between disks adds time, but on the same disk it doesn't (effectively, anyway).  It also means that the images get put into the date/format under my top level project automatically, I don't have to create the original structure to begin with. I just load them all into one directory on the same disk, hit import, select the top level project they go into, and let it organize by date.  It displays on the large import window what directories it will be creating and how many images will go in each one.
Anyway, I think that should give you the right ideas!
    Cheers!

  • My photos look terrible in the library module after editing in the develop module.  They look nothing alike.  How do I solve this issue?  Using Lightroom 5.

anyone have any ideas?  The only way I can get around this is export the photo back into iPhoto and try to edit out the mess.

The waves you are seeing on your monitor must be more pronounced than what I'm seeing in the posted screenshots. The Library module uses Adobe RGB AND 8-bit JPEG preview images, which can cause banding in fine gradient areas (compared to Develop view), but I'm not seeing a huge difference in your screenshots. Here's a screen shot with my non-wide gamut monitor calibration profile. If my screenshot shows less banding than what you are seeing with the original images it indicates a monitor profile issue as described by twenty-one. A hardware calibrated monitor is recommended to prevent these types of issues.
The Library image also appears lighter in the shadow area, which probably indicates more Luminance NR needs to be applied or perhaps less sharpening. Try it and see if that helps with the issue.
