Why is Lightroom CONSTANTLY updating it's database files?

Whenever Lightroom is up and running multitudes of files associated with the program appear to constantly be changing and written (as in every few seconds) ... even though I'm doing absolutely nothing in Lightroom and there are no processes (i.e. preview generation etc.) in progress within lightroom ?
Why do I say this, how do I know ... I have a backup program that monitors my data and automatically backs up files "as they change". With any other program that means when open files are closed.
With lightroom the backup program is constantly backing up files associated the lightroom session and that starts to slow down the responsiveness of Lightroom as the two programs start vying for control of the same files (... absolute pure specualtion on my part!).
It's no showstopper, just annoying  .... and ... I'm curious to know what in the heck is going on behind the curtain. It's the only program I have that does this.
Any ideas??
(I'm running LR V3.4.1)
Thanks --- Ken

Since I can't edit the subject line to add " ... while the program is running and there is NO user activity"
I'll steal a few key words from your response and rephrase my inquiry to:
"Why is LR's database in a constant state of instability even when there is NO user activity within the program"
Taking LR files out of a robust back-up scheme (controlled by a program whose sole function in life is to back things up!)  ... is a band-aid, not a solution IMO (no offense intended).
Unless there is more to LR's built-in backup than is documented, i.e. - does it support versioning (keeping x copies of older files), have the ability to restore files the user has deleted, write backups to multiple locations etc? Not that I can find, correct if I'm wrong.
LR is the only program I run (among dozens) that exhibits such spastic behavior. As I said in my orig post, no show-stopper, just annoying and illogical (at this point anyway).
Ok ... maybe an answer can be had by by asking this then:
Is it just my installation of LR that does this AND/OR is this known and accepted LR program behavior?

  • Why does Lightroom not update all my previews after a batch change?

    Hi!
    I imported more 2,000 pictures. Then I did one batch change (adjusting the curve (tonality) by Lightroom).
    But it looks like, only on the page, I actually see, the previews are updated.
    If go to the next page of 24 pictures. At first I see the old preview. Then the CPU and hard drive activity is increasing and picture by picture the preview is updated. So I've to wait 15 seconds, until I can decide, if the settings of the pictures are a good start or not. And then I've to page again and wait 15 seconds
    I expect, that Lightroom does it:
    in background
    in parallel and not only one picture by picture (15 seconds are cause by sequencially processing; I've an Intel i7 with 4 cores and 3.6 GHz, it's not the slowest machine, but Lightroom only use up to 25% of my whole CPU resources :-( )
    Sorry, but I do not understand, how I should be able to handle a mass of pictures, if I have to page and wait always.
    Is there any magic shurtcut, command, setting, to enforce such an auto update?
    Thanks a lot!

    Dunno whether this would offer sufficient improvement or not:
    It doesn't automate preview generation, but does give a button (2 actually) for quick-building of previews.
    OttoMate
    PS - Adobe did provide a function in Lr5.2 SDK for building previews, unfortunately the fine print taketh away too much of what the big print giveth (e.g. doesn't work in develop module), so not viable for auto-preview generation, yet.

  • Programmically update a SQLCE database file

    Hello All,
    I have two programs that I want to share the same database so that the tables that contain duplicate information don't have to be replicated if I provide two different databases (one for each program).
    When I deploy these applications, and I make changes (adding tables and adding fields to existing tables) I'd like to verify that these changes are in my client's database and if not add them.
    For example, I sell a program to a client. Later in the year, I make changes to the database in terms of tables and fields. If the client downloads the latest update to the program, and the program refers to a table or field that isn't in their current database,
    their program will error out.
    Can I check a SQLCE database or items and add things if they are not there?

    You can Query the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views for object exsistance and take corrective action
    (ie run ALTER TABLE ADD .. etc)
    You can also use my scripting API from exportsqlce.codeplex.com if you are insecure about how to Query INFORMATION_SCHEMA views.

  • Why can Lightrooms not view my NEF(RAW) File taken from my Nikon D5500?

    I have a Nikon D5500 and viewing a JPEG is fine. If I change my file format to NEF(RAW) when importing files lightroom cannot view them. It gives me a box to check for updates but I have to most recent version. Ver:5.7.1.
    A few weeks ago I used my friends Nikon D5300 and the RAW files were perfectly fine.

    It's a new camera model that was released in that "hole" between Lightroom releases. But you can download the DNG converter version 8.8 and convert that NEF files to DNG. I know, it's a Band-Aid fix. But it will work in the meantime while we wait for the next Lightroom update or upgrade.

  • Why is Lightroom 5.3 corrupting my RAW files?

    Running on my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5, sporadic RAW files are now being corrupted between the time I 'Backup LR' at day's end shutdown, and then open LR the next day to continue working.
    A RAW image file that was perfect the day before, now appears with the warning "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged." across it in the 'Develop' module screen.
    When upgrading to 5.0 (5.3 now) two weeks ago, I followed exactly the 'best practices' guidelines of Michael Reichman/Jeff Schewe LR5 video tutorial.
    I've been a LR user since the very beginning, and have been shooting professionally for 30 years.  What in the world is going on with Adobe that for the first time in my career, I am losing image files due to corruption w/in Lightroom?!?

    Try opening the files in preview to see if it is Lightroom that is confused (i.e. catalog corruption). Also check your backup files with preview whether they open. Also check whether you have correct permissions on the folder the files are in. Incorrect permissions there sometimes leads to error messages in Lightroom. It is quite unlikley that Lightroom is damaging your files. It is usually hardware problems like a harddisk going bad if your files are becoming corrupted. Lightroom as a rule does not write to your files (except maybe if they are dngs and you have "automatically write changes into xmp" turned on. Run Disk Utility on the drive to see if there are any issues that the OS can fix. If this is your startup disk, you might have to boot from the recovery partition to repair any damage.

  • Why won't OSX update? I checked file permissions, NG.

    When I try to update OSX, I keep getting an error message. I have done a clean reinstall on the OS, used Disk Utilities to check the HD and verify file permissions. When verifying file permissions, all kinds of new permissions are granted. I don't understand these or where else to look for help, as updates still won't install.
    Is this worth pursuing, or do I have a HD or logic board problem here?
    PB 12" 1.33G   Mac OS X (10.4)   bought used 40G HD installed

    Did you verify file permissions or repair file permissions? The latter is what you need to do. Have you tried it with the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update?

  • IF Auto Update Statistics ENABLED in Database Design, Why we need to Update Statistics as a maintenance plan

    Hi Experts,
    IF Auto Update Statistics ENABLED in Database Design, Why we need to Update Statistics as a maintenance plan for Daily/weekly??
    Vinai Kumar Gandla

    Hi Vikki,
    Many systems rely solely on SQL Server to update statistics automatically(AUTO UPDATE STATISTICS enabled), however, based on my research, large tables, tables with uneven data distributions, tables with ever-increasing keys and tables that have significant
    changes in distribution often require manual statistics updates as the following explanation.
    1.If a table is very big, then waiting for 20% of rows to change before SQL Server automatically updates the statistics could mean that millions of rows are modified, added or removed before it happens. Depending on the workload patterns and the data,
    this could mean the optimizer is choosing a substandard execution plans long before SQL Server reaches the threshold where it invalidates statistics for a table and starts to update them automatically. In such cases, you might consider updating statistics
    manually for those tables on a defined schedule (while leaving AUTO UPDATE STATISTICS enabled so that SQL Server continues to maintain statistics for other tables).
    2.In cases where you know data distribution in a column is "skewed", it may be necessary to update statistics manually with a full sample, or create a set of filtered statistics in order to generate query plans of good quality. Remember,
    however, that sampling with FULLSCAN can be costly for larger tables, and must be done so as not to affect production performance.
    3.It is quite common to see an ascending key, such as an IDENTITY or date/time data types, used as the leading column in an index. In such cases, the statistic for the key rarely matches the actual data, unless we update the Statistic manually after
    every insert.
    So in the case above, we could perform manual statistics updates by
    creating a maintenance plan that will run the UPDATE STATISTICS command, and update statistics on a regular schedule. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:

  • Why did the latest update (31.1.2) delete database files for primary email account in profile?

    After restarting TB to apply the 31.1.2 update, all of the database files for my primary email account were apparently deleted. Restarting TB again got it to start syncing with the IMAP server again, but it has to download around 100,000 messages again because of this. Was this a design decision or is there a problem with the update itself? And why did it only affect my primary email account and leave the other 4 (much smaller ones) unscathed?

    Account5 is the one affected which is still attempting to sync. It also appears that my sync choices were altered without permission or notification. I always keep the Deleted folder and the POP subfolder from Hotmail accounts disabled since it is merely duplicating content in other folders. When re-checking the sync settings because it was taking so long, I found that the POP subfoler was selected for sync again.

  • Why does itunes constantly need to update files?

    I update my files manually on my iPod touch. Whenever it is plugged in, every few minutes iTunes says, "updating files," and takes a moment to update, I suppose. But while it is doing this, my iTunes becomes unresponsive if I try to do anything; play or change a song, or make changes to artist, album, etc on any song. As I am constantly updating my files to include album name, art, and other things, it seems to become unresponsive and need to be restarted almost every time I use iTunes. This is very aggrivating and I don't know how to make it stop??

    Try posting in the iTunes forum.

  • Why is Lightroom 2.4 Thumbnail Rendering SLOOOOOOOOW...?

    For some reason Lightroom 2.4 is taking an enormous amount of time to render thumbnail previews and in spite of having my thumbnail cache set to 50 GB, it still re-renders the thumbnails every single time I use the scroll bar.
    Every other aspect of Lightroom performs just fine on my machine.  But the library is so slow that it is unusable.  Every time I touch the scroll bar I can see a somewhat darker preview of the thumbnails and then as soon as I stop scrolling, the CPU shoots up to 100% utilization and I watch as the thumbnails brighten and adjust one by one.  30 to 45 seconds later I can click on the thumbnails and navigate around just fine.  Performance is great in fact until I touch the scroll bar again.
    The basic question is this.  Why does Lightroom refuse to cache my thumbnails?  And why does it take soooo long to render them when Vista's explorer can render hundreds of thumbnails off even a flash card in seconds?  Even if thumbnail rendering was slow it would be fine if Lightroom would only cache them for me so it doesn't have to redo it every time I scroll back and forth.  Shouldn't there be an option to render thumbnails on import as well as 1:1 previews?
    I am running Vista 64 bit with 4GB of RAM with a Gforce 7600GT graphics card.  My library has about 18,000 images in it.  But I've also tried with a brand new small catalog.  I'm shooting and processing Nikon D300 RAW files.
    I've done all the standard performance tweaks that everyone talks about:
    1.  I render 1:1 previews and never expire them.
    2.  I have tried all the various nvidia card tweaks.
    3.  I've updated to the latest and greatest nvidia drivers.
    4.  I have my catalog on a separate drive from my images, and my thumbnail cache on yet a 3rd drive.
    5.  My machine has plenty of RAM, and in fact Lightroom is only using 1.5GB leaving me with well over 1GB remaining.
    6.  My machine is not swapping at all.
    I've been reading and reading for the past 24 hours about this issue but have yet to come up with an answer to it.  I did find this old thread from over a year ago that describes the EXACT same problem I am experiencing except his problem was with version 2.3:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/1395391#1395391
    Does anyone have ANY idea what can be causing this?  As is, I can't use Lightroom under these conditions.
    Thanks!

    So I spent all evening experimenting with different things in Lightroom to try and improve performance and found 1 solution that worked.  Although I'm not sure why.
    I understand that a design decision was made to render thumbs on the fly.  Fine.  But what I couldn't understand was why it took so incredibly long.  I mean the process was literally locking up my entire machine every time I touched the scroll bar.
    The ONLY thing I could get to clear up the problem was to select the top level folder in my catalog, and export the entire catalog as a new catalog.  For export I did NOT choose to export the image files or the previews since I only wanted to keep my database (image adjustments, keywords, etc).
    Upon opening this newly created catalog, of course everything was slow because there are no previews for anything.  Fine.  So I chose to render standard sized previews for a couple of the folders in the catalog (about 150 photos each).  And then lightroom became extremely fast for browsing and scrolling through thumbnails on those particular folders.
    What I can't undertand is why rendering standard sized previews on my old catalog (same photos, same folder) does not improve performance, yet doing it for the new catalog which should be an exact copy DOES improve performance.
    The only thing I can think of is that my original catalog must have either been corrupt or there may be some upper limit on how many previews Lightroom can handle gracefully?  Since I had standard previews for my entire catalog before.
    I'm going to try and render standard sized previews on my entire new catalog tonight and see if the performance remains snappy.  But something is definitely not right here.

  • Why am I not able to export NEF files to Photoshop from Lightroom to edit. This is new. When I right click on an image, the export to PS option is not selectable.

    Why am I not able to export NEF files to Photoshop from Lightroom to edit. This is new. When I right click on an image, the export to PS option is not selectable. I've never had this happen before. I haven't used it for a few weeks, so maybe there's an update (Mac or otherwise) that's screwing things up? HELP!

    I have an Edit In - Photoshop option, but not an Export - Photoshop option.
    Obviously to have right-click Edit In to work, the photo you're right-clicking on needs to be selected.  I assume this is not the problem, and that the photo is selected.
    Mavericks 10.9.3 has a problem where the Users folder is hidden, and you need to update iTunes to fix it, but it's been a few weeks since this happened so hopefully you're up-to-date and the Users folder isn't hidden anymore.
    If you can't get things to work, I'd uninstall LR and uninstall Photoshop, then install Photoshop, and update it, then install LR and update it, as a way to get any wayward security or other OS-level things reset.

    The CC system is farked.  If you update LR from within LR, you take it out of CC's cocoon and it doesn't recognize that LR is even installed.  I installed 5.3 as an update within LR.  LR disappeared from my installed apps in the CC list, and with 5.4 it showed up as an "install" option.  I did that instead of upgrading withing LR, and everything went well.  CC now lists LR as installed.

    Hi,
    I don't know if this is the correct forum.
    When updating Model from database seems does not update the entity nullable property.
    and it will not update the Default Value from the Backend (MSSQL) also.
    I am using VS2008 SP1 3.5EF, XP64Bit Machine.
    Thanks
    vb.net GUI

    maybe related..
    today.. i changed the PK size.. from char(10) to char(36)
    got many problems.. easy to fix...
    but some query stop working:
    Table1Record.Table2Reference.Load(); //i'm trying to load table2 from table1..
    throw this error: A relationship multiplicity constraint violation occurred: An EntityReference expected at least one related object, but the query returned no related objects from the data store.
    i get this error only when PK is greater than char(10)...
    with SQL profiler.. i saw that PK was truncated to char(10) :
    exec sp_executesql N'SELECT [... some fields...]
    FROM  [dbo].[Table1] AS [Extent1]
    INNER JOIN [dbo].[Table2] AS [Extent2] ON [Extent1].[NoTable2] = [Extent2].[NoTable2]
    WHERE [Extent1].[NoTable1] = @EntityKeyValue1',N'@EntityKeyValue1 char(10)',@EntityKeyValue1='a2164b14-e'
    (NoTable1 is the PK changed from char(10) to char(36))
    i'm working with VS.NET 2008
    so, i looked at Model1.Edmx... in notepad
    CSDL was not changed when i did the "Update Model from Database" !!!
    here is SSDL part:
            <EntityType Name="Table1">
              <Key>
                <PropertyRef Name="NoTable1" />
              </Key>
              <Property Name="NoTable1" Type="char" Nullable="false" MaxLength="36" />
    here is CSDL part:
            <EntityType Name="Table1">
              <Key>
                <PropertyRef Name="NoTable1" />
              </Key>
              <Property Name="NoTable1" Type="String" Nullable="false" MaxLength="10" Unicode="false" FixedLength="true" />
    Cool.. i found the prob.... but why ? and how to correct this ? manually change Model1.Edmx in notepad ??
    why the maxlength property is readonly in Model Browser pane ??
    what about VS.NET 2010 ?! same prob ??
    is it a bug or by design ?
    I hope this can help someone.. I spent a few hours on this prob
