Why is Liquify Brush Size so Out of Proportion?

When I choose the Liquify option from the Filter menu, the Liquify tool opens and I have access to the custom set of Liquify tools. Unlike almost any other tool where you select a brush size, the Liquify tool requires you to modify the position of a slider rather than selecting the brush size dynamically by right-clicking.
The problem is that the brush size selector control goes from 0 to 15,000px diameter. In order to make effective use of a 15,000 pixel liquify push tool, you'd have to have a really large image. Perhaps there is a case where someone at some time used a 15,000 px diameter nudge brush in the Liquify tool, but in my nearly 20 years of using Photoshop, I have never come across the need for a brush that large.
Regardless, because the selector uses a linear scale, it is really difficult to select a small brush size (say less than 100px) without manually incrementing the slider.
I would really like to see Adobe standardize the tool size/preset selector so that it is always available via the context menu (or equivalent) and that an option exists to enable relative slider values or percentage slider values in incremental selectors like brush size. Percentages could be setup where 100% was the largest side of the current image and then brush sizes could be selected via percentage of your image (of course converting to pixels, but the scale would be percentage-based). Even an exponential scale that favored the smaller values would be helpful. Or perhaps, movable caps that would allow you to set your own Max and Min values....that would rock.
Are there are any plugins that solve this problem? Anybody have any advice on how I might be able to select more appropriately scaled brushes in the Liquify tool when I am working with images where a 15,000 pixel brush head is unreasonable.
Any input would be greatl appreciated.

R_Kelly, thanks for the reply.
The problem isn't that there aren't enough ways to change the size fo the cursor, it's the relative scale of the cursor. I have two 37" Dell Ultra monitors on my desktop and to use the Alt-Right click method of resizing the brush (even on a 7500 pixel wide document at 300 dpi), I have to drag from one side of my dual monitor setup across 60 inches (whatever the horizontal width of a 37" monitor x2) about 50 times to get the brush to a size that I can actually see the outline of it.
Then, once I can see the outline of the Nudge Tool (in the Liquify tools), if I drag about 3 pixels, the visible outline of the brush wildly jumps from full-screen to tiny. It's because the scale of the brush size selector is a mess. 95% of the sizes in the selector are bigger than the piece that I am working on. Does that make sense? Why would you be able to select a tool size bigger than your document? Furthermore why would you want 95% of the available tool sizes to be unusable? It doesn't make any sense at all.
Thanks for the short reminder on brush size manipulation in general. I was surprised to see it work in the Liquify tool--though it didn't solve the issue.
Best wishes,
Jase

  • CS6 Liquify brush size

In my system the liquify brush size goes from 1 to 151 to 301 to 454 and on up.
It it not possible to get smaller brushes like 30 60 100?
CS6 extended  Win7  Graphic Accelerator on (this makes no difference in brush steps)

    Hi Curt,
Since you PM'd me and asked nicely, I'll respond, but I really can't take any more of this public experimentation with the forum software.
The Liquify brush size does jump in huge increments if you try to change the size by moving the slider with the mouse - probably because they changed the max brush size to 15,000 pixels.
The increments it changes by are much smaller (by 2, not 1) if you use the up and down arrow keys to change the size.
And of course you can type anything you want into the field.
But possibly now the best way to use the tool is to use the right-click and drag gesture, which is now the same as when editing in the main Photoshop display.

  • Liquify brush size increment sluggish with CS3, Intuos 3/window 7

    Hi
I have encountered a strange problem with liquify filter using Intuos 3 tablet pen after installing CS3 on my new Window 7 machine.
I always assign the shortcut keystrokes [ and ] to the pen buttons for increaseing/decreaseing the brush size. In my old Vista computer, everything was all good, the brush size changes continously and quickly when i press the buttons. But now the brush size only changes an increment by 1 pixel (should be 10 pixels?) by clicking it once and it no longer increases or decreases the brush size continously by holding the button.
I thought it was Wacom drivers problems but i un-installed and re-installed their latest and oldest drivers and the problem remains. I wonder if it is CS3 glitch with Window 7? I have installed all Adobe updates for CS3. I would be very grateful to any advice.

It is Intuos driver problem. I downloaded the old Vista tablet driver to run on the Window 7 and problem  solved.

  • Photoshop Liquify Brush Size increase/decrease with alt+crtl drag don't work anymore...

    Hi :-)
I have installed the last Update to Photoshop CS6 13.0.4...
Now I can't increase/decrease the Brush Size in the Liquify-Dialog anymore (before I installed the update, it works fine with alt+crtl and drag)...
If I press alt+crtl, the "Cancel"-Button is shown as "Revert", but the Brush resizing don't work... :-/
    I use a Mac on OS X 10.6.8...
But it seems it has to do with the system... beacause at home I use 10.8.3 and there works everything fine with the 13.0.4 Update!!!

  • Brush size in Flash?

I often need to zoom in on my cartoons so that I can make my details more precise. However, my brush size DOES NOT change proportionally to my canvas, and this makes my lines appear uneven and unprofessional. Yes, I understand how to change brush size, but I don't know how to keep it from changing the size when I zoom.

On the toolbar above the Fl logo click the two arrows to
widen out the toolbar and it will show two brush settings at the
bottom, the right one is the brush shape and left the size.
    Hope it helped.

  • PS CC – Brush size in Liquify filter

Hello, who can help me? Since I have Photoshop installed CC works there the possibility to change the brush size by pressing the ctrl + alt key especially in the Liquify filter anymore. Anyone know the problem? The same problem I have with the zoom function. In PS 6 I was able to press the alt + space key and while moving the mouse in the image in or out back. also that no longer works?
I look forward to your feedback.
    Thanks + Regards,
    Sascha

You are the greatest R_Kelly!  Now it works – THANK YOU!
But it´s still a mystery to me because the Graphic Processro was always activated.
when I have checked the settings, following your recommendation, the system could not identify the graphic card…?
then, when I copied your settings and made a restart, suddenly it works. ?
however, I appreciate your help very well. this was the right way!
when I had asked the German Adobe-guys in the summer academy, two days ago, they have had no idea!!
    my status quo:

  • Why does an image size 6x6 240 print out 6.25x6.25 when I drag it into a new file 24x7  240?  When I print it before I drag it into the new file it prints out 6x6.

Why does an image size 6x6 240 print out 6.25x6.25 when I drag it into a new file 24x7  240 image size?  If I print it before I drag it into the 24x7 240 file it prints 6x6.

What is the number 240 meant to indicate here – the resolution? If so please also give the unit.
And what are your printer and the print settings you use, could there be any scaling involved in the printing itself?

  • Brush size - why is it so restricted?

I have a 24 megapixel RAW image shot on my 5D MkII open in Aperture. I want to use the burn brush, but the maximum brush size is only 200px. Can I make it larger? It's useless as it stands.

Well, it's useless if the brush size cannot be increased from 200px. That being said, even 1000 is small for a 24mp image.
If I'm using a 200px brush, then I end up overlapping strokes to cover an area that is larger than 200px square. Then I get streaks and irregular coverage - that makes it useless.
If I uncheck Detect Edges, then my max brush size is still 200. How are you getting 1000?   EDIT: I was just able to make it 1000 - thanks for the tip!
    Thanks again

  • Why is my stroke so bumpy when I use large brush sizes?

I always have to erase a ton around the edges in order to make it smooth.  Any way to fix this?  I'm using a Turcom tablet on Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, but this happened with all other tablets I used, too (Wacom).  I can never get a smooth line with large brush sizes.  I usually only have size checked in my brush tablet pressure options.

Just to clarify, I mean closer together. When you draw with a brush in a program like PSE you are actually putting down many repetitions of the brush cursor itself. You need more overlap to avoid seeing the edges of each outline.
Or you could try a softer brush.

  • Increasing brush-size crashes Win 8 - when HDMI cable is connected - Why?

Photoshop Elements. Increasing brush-size crashes Windows 8 when HDMI cable connected to TV or data projector.  I'm using Asus N56V notebook with Nvidia 635M dedicated graphics card with latest driver.
    Any ideas please?

    Hi Brian,
    Here's an update:
The nub of the problem has been determined by my computer expert as a conflict (as we suspected) between the graphics driver and screen resolution.  However the situation is far from dimple.  I'll be as brief as possible:
No matter how we approach the settings for the Nvidia driver, when using HDMI, the 'workings' of the compuer automatically reset the driver to either the inbuilt Intel driver and if that's deliberately 'disabled' it reverts to the even more basic Windows 8 driver.  As neither card/driver is 'dedicated', the sharing that occurs between the native resolution of the notebook display and the external display (even if this is set to a compatible value)  the the computer crashes.  It remains OK if a single dsipaly (internal or external) is selected.  Dual display (which I must have) is the problem.  My computer expert is going to contact Asus about this. He even tried setting the global setting to Nvidia only and it still didn;'t succeed.
I've since spoken with a colleague and he tells me that in the audio-visual community, this is a well known phenomenom with rexcent lapptops/notebooks no matter what to cost or spec - in so far as they ignor the 'dedicated graphics' when on HDMI in favour of the default (shared) driver and hence the problem. Apparently some notebooks are OK but one has to shop around and take pot luck.  What a state of affairs!
The Asus notebook works OK using the VGA socket but let's face it, I bought this hi-spec computer for HDMI usage.
This is the story to date.  It would appear that software is not the root cause.
I will continue to pursue the matter and find a resolutuion (no pun intended - or perahps it was!)
    With all best wishes,
    Clive.

  • Rotate canvis unintuitive, hot key limitations, new adjustment layer features? Brush size slider bad

I've been using photoshop for a while, as well as a number of 3D  applications. Speed and efficiency have always been very important, and I  usually customize my software a lot to make it work for me. These are  some of the things photoshop could do better in comparison to the user  interfaces in some 3D programs.
    Rotate canvas unintuitive:
While having a center pivot seems more intuitive at first, it actually  causes me nothing but trouble having to always figure out where the  center is, and then deciding how close i am (which will change speed of  rotation). I would like at least an option to simply drag left and drag  right for clockwise and counterclockwise at a specific speed.
    Hot Key Limitations:
alt R and control R and shift R cannot be assigned to different things. I would prefer it if i could customize all of these.
    new adjustment layer features:
often when painting in photoshop, i create an adjustment layer over all  the layers. If i like how it looks, and want to continue painting, i  have to either turn it off while i work and switch it on at the end  again, flatten the entire painting loosing the layer separations, or  duplicate the adjustment layer and setting it next to each pre-existing  layer and then merging each set of 2 layers(the original + the  duplicated adjustment layer).
It would be really wonderful if the process of duplicating the  adjustment layers and flattening each set of 2 could be automated. a  sort of Flatten to all individually button.
    Brush Size Slider:
Zbrush has a very wonderful brush size change. I never appreciated it  until trying photoshops. (previously to this i used another piece of  hardware with a scroll wheel to change brush size. and still do. why the  heck is the first brush size jump 10 units!?! simply a linear brush  size change would have been awesome. although including a brush size  slider is already pretty awesome
These things have been bothering me for a long time, and i always assume  these problems that are obvious to me are probably obvious to everybody  else and therefore will be fixed without my small intervention, but i  figure this cant hurt. Thanks for all the hard work and the wonderful  product!

This is a poorly explained reason about why is so important having a loupe in Photoshop. I've not also, used the best example, but I will. This belongs to the ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Loupe/Magnificator View:. Also, I will try to make my english clrearer, but here it goes:

  • Brush size no longer showing up on cursor

Hi everyone. I use my brushes a lot, but I've just lost all ability to see, on screen, in real time, the outline of my brush; all I get is a cross, no matter how big or small my brush is. The same goes for my clone stamp tool, as well as my dodge and burn tools. PS is essentially useless to me like this because I cannot see the edge of where I am painting until afterward, when I see the effect. I cannot seem to fix it in preferences, and I have no idea how this happened. Can someone PLEASE help????? Thanks, Jeff

Thanks for the prompt reply. The problem is resolved, for now, anyway. It appears to have been something to do with my cursor preferences, just as we suspected. The curious thing is that I didn't knowingly make any adjustments to my cursor preferences until AFTER this problem appeared. After it appeared, I checked my preferences, and they looked correct. Nonetheless, out of desperation, I tried to change my cursor preferences anyway, but nothing I did seemed to have any effect. After I posted the question, I shut down PS, re-entered PS and noticed that my cursors had changed. They were still wrong, but at least they had changed. I set my preferences back to the correct setting, and the problem went away.
When I paint, I adjust brush sizes and opacity and toggle between foreground and background using keystrokes, instead of the mouse, so is it possible that I mistakenly changed my cursor preferences without even knowing it???? I didn't even think about or look at caps-lock. What would that do?
Anyway, it's sorted for now, which is a huge relief, but I do wish I knew what caused it in the first place, so that I could be sure that it won't happen again. Thanks again.

  • Why Does iPhoto 08 Crop Print Outs ???

Hi. I would appreciate a little help here.
I am trying to print out some 8" x 10" photos with borders, in landscape paper orientation, using an Intel Dual Core iMac, Mac OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 08 ver 7.1.2, approved HP Printer and HP Driver, on 8 1/2" x 11" HP Premium Photo Paper, at maximum dpi.
    File resolutions are generally:
    1600 x 1200 (2 Mega Pixels, 4:3 image aspect ratio, 395 KB file size),
    2048 x 1536 (3 Mega Pixels, 4:3 image aspect ratio, 790 KB file size),
2560 x 1920 (5 Mega Pixels, 4:3 image aspect ratio, 2.2 MB file size), and
    3264 x 2448 (8 Mega Pixels, 4:3 image aspect ratio, 3.6 MB file size).
The problem I'm having is that iPhoto prints the photo by cropping approx 1/4" off the left side and 1/2" off the right side of the screen image without indicating there will be any loss of image content. The screen image DOES NOT accurately reflect the printed image.
Like most people that take pictures, I frame the shots the way I wanted the picture to look. In a picture of a family reunion the person on the far left would have half his head and body chopped off (missing) while the person on the far right would be totally cut out (missing). What I see on the screen IS NOT what I get when printed out. And of course, it does this consistently without warning. Why?
I would accept uneven borders, but want the entire picture to print. Something I would have thought to be the default settings for iPhoto when printing "with borders." Foolish me.
I understand some cropping might have to take place when printing "border-less" printouts, but not for those "with borders." There out to be a law against doing this without conscent.
HP PhotoSmart will do this for me, but it's rather a hassle to have to transfer pictures over each time I want a satisfactory print out.
How do I get my pictures in iPhoto 08 to print out "entirely?" Dare I say "normally?"
Have tried many settings changes in iPhoto and Preview to no avail.
    Please help.

    Hi LarryNH,
    Thanks for your timely reply.
Ok, let's do the math. What the heck?
Pick out a photo in your iPhoto library that you can view and print out in Landscape View.
Preferably a photo that you can instantly recognize the border changes in, or with rulers or grid lines. If possible, let's make it an image with a 4:3 ratio too.
Chances are you will be able to see the entire photo on your screen — even though your screen mostly likely is not one with a 4:3 image aspect ratio (pixel Width divided by pixel Height). Hmmmmmm.
Now print out the photo using iPhoto 08, letter paper size with borders. (Save yourself some ink by choosing the lowest dpi or fast printing)
For me, actual image size was 10 1/16 "W by 8 1/4 "H. The letter paper size print out has a 5/16 " border on the left and a 5/8 " border on the right (not centered, even though it's supposed to be). Both top and botton borders measure 1/8 " (centered, like its supposed to be).
Notice any chopping off of the image on the left and right sides when compared to the screen image? Hmmmmm.
When I print the same photo using HP PhotoSmart
For me, the actual image size is somewhat smaller: 9 13/16 "W by 8 3/8 "H. The letter paper size print out has a 9/16 " border on the left and a 10/16 " border on the right (approximately centered). The top border is 1/2 " and the botton border ise 9/16 " (again, approximately centered). BUT MOST IMPORTANT, the image of the photo I see on the screen is "entirely" present on the print out.
The original photo has a 4:3 (or 1.3333) image ratio (4 divided by 3).
Apple is printing out an incomplete horizontally uncentered image with a 1.2197 ratio (10 1/16 "W divided 8 1/4 "H).
HP PhotoSmart is printing out a complete image with a 1.1716 ratio (9 13/16 "W divided by 8 3/8 "H), but at least it is a complete image and it is approximately centered.
Besides Larry, I bought a Mac. I shouldn't have to do the physics and math. Apple should be, thus making life easier for you and me. I hope they're listening.
I have been totally unable to coax a complete image out of iPhoto, let alone one properly centered.
I have been trying to print photos from Events. I'm going to try one from Albums next.
If you find a work around in iPhoto, please let me know. With borders it is do-able, as HP PhotoSmart has proven. I just wish iPhoto could do the same.

  • How do you increase the Brush Size past 50 on the Stroke Effect?

    Hey Everyone,
I created a photo in Photoshop and I imported it to AE, and I've been trying to create a Spray Paint effect by using the Stroke effect and Reveal Original Image to look look like as if I'm spray painting the the picture on the wall. All is going well until I get to the brush size, and it only goes up to 50. Does anyone know how to increase it past 50? 50 is to small, it won't cover what I want it to cover for the stoke. I can't seem to figure out a way to get it higher than 50, and I don't know any other way to create the effect I'm trying to go for. Anyone know how to either get past this or know a different way to get make it look like I'm spray painting the picture on the wall? Any help at all would be great.
    Thanks in advance!
