I have a i Mac desk top bought about 5 years ago.  I keep getting pop-ups for Installing Mac Keeper.  How do I stop receiving these pop ups? Thank you for your help.

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Why do i keep getting pop ups?

everytime i click on something i keep getting pops up on a mac keeper with a little robot or just other junk how do i stop this?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Can anyone tell from this log why my mac keeps crashing and forcing a restart?

Can anyone tell fromm the log below why my iMac keeps randomly crashing and forcing a restart? It is happening way too often now and it's driving me crazy!
Only just a few days ago I wiped my drive clean and installed a fresh OS copy of mountain lion, I then though it may be a Ram issue but a thorough test said everything was ok and I had a memory monitor window open last time it crashed which showed that barely any of the memory was in use!?
Really need some help here guys!
    Thanks in advance!

Right so I decided to erase my harddrive completely using disk utility, then went on to install a fresh version of mountain lion (both by holding down cmd-r when booting up)
With a fresh system I tried what had previously casued a kernel crash, which wa copying a video to my downloads folder, selecting it and then hitting spacebar to preview it, the video plays fine for about a minute then it jolts, freezes and then retarts with a white screen saying I need to restart.
Below is the report, im so confused!

  • Why does Mac keep installing printer when already installed?

I have a client that has Mac Air running Mountain Lion 10.8 connected to LAN via WiFi.  The printer is an Epson WF-3520 connected to LAN via ethernet cable.  The router running pfSense has Bonjour services allowed between LAN and WiFi.  The Mac keeps re-installing the printer and increments the printer queue each time.  The highest enumeration has gotten to -57 after the printer name.  Other Macs in the same LAN do the same thing.  Trying to figure out why the Mac forgets the printer is already installed.  I have done everything I can think of except re-setting the printer system.
    Thanks for any pointers.

FYI- in case this can help others.  What I eventually did was move the printer off the ethernet cable and made it wireless too, like the desktops clients in the office.  No more problems with the printer increasing enumerations on the Macs.  Evidently the router/firewall was creating some issue even though there are not rules blocking traffic between the 2 wired versus wireless clients interfaces.

  • Why my mac keeps uploading with no reason in Mountain Lion

I installed Mountain Lion recently and I noticed that my mac keeps uploading without any reason. I am using iStat and outgoing is always at 100kbps. I dont have any app runing. Its already happened several times.
I am using a limited broadband so I am so worried about it.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks

    HI
    i having problem :
location servics enables (nothing in list)(no app in list which accesses location),
    icloud "find my mac" enabled,
and WHEN I TRY TO FIND MY MACBOOK ON icloud or "find my iphone app" on iphone.
    it says:
    "ONLINE,LOCATION UNAVAILABLE"
and one more thing, when i set "time & date" to "set automactic according to my location"
then the result is "unable to determine location at this time."
CAN ANYONE TELL, HOW TO MAKE LOCATIONS ACCESSED? IS IT WIFI SETTINGS? OR IS IT OTHER SETTINGS BEYOND MAC .???

  • How do i find out why my mac keeps crashing on shutdown?

    Hi.
Normally when i select shutdown my mac crashes and either a thick greyed out line appears at the top of the screen and nothing happens or the screen fills with the 'you must hold your power button down for 10 seconds'.
I have a macbook pro dual 2.4GHz with 4GB RAM and the latest version of leopard. When i bought this mac i originally took it back and changed it for another of the same version as i thought it was a problem with the mac itself but its not.
Im not sure what i can be doing to cause these problems. . .
I have 2 other macs with tiger and i get no problems like this at all. . .
    Any ideas?
    Cheers, Benji

I know i have a G5 in my profile but as i said in my first post of this thread im using my macbookpro dual 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM so the apogee has nothing to do with this computer.
I ran rember last night and i woke up after 12 hours and it was still running.
I put loops onto maximum and RAM allocation to maximum to get full testing.
Any ideas on why its taking this long or is it normal?
    Cheers, Benji

  • Is there a way to tell why my mac keeps crashing?

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help me out. For the last month or so my Macbook Pro keeps crashing for no apparent reason. I have the sneaking suspicion that it all started after I bought a Razer Mamber and installed their driver, but I thought I had deleted everything from my Mac and it just keeps crashing. It crashing when I'm browsing through the Finder. It crashes when I'm browsing on the web. It just crashes and it seems to be getting worse as it's crashed on me twice today and I've only been using it for a few hours.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this. I will do a wipe/reinstall on my HD as a final option, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears.
    Thank you!

Oops. When I clicked on the report 2 files opened up. I'm not sure what's what so I will post the contents of the other file below as well. Really appreciate all the help!

  • Can anyone tell me why my mac keeps crashing? I'm new to mac.

hiiii im new to mac and iv had my imac 3 days now and im finding it crashing like every hour or less? please help as im debating on taking it back.

Your warranty includes 90 days of phone support. Call AppleCare.

  • Why my mac keeps freezing

I have a macbook pro 13" from mid 2009. I had 2gb of internal memory and I decided to change it to 8 gbs. Now my computer keeps freezing and a message keeps appearing in different languages saying my computer needs to restart. How do I fix it?

That message is called a kernel panic, and it's almost certainly caused in this case by a hardware issue.  Perhaps you got bad RAM, or perhaps the wrong RAM, or perhaps it's not seated properly.  It's even possible you damaged something during installation.
Where did you get the RAM, and what are the exact specs of that RAM?

  • Can someone tell me why my mac keeps crashing?

I hope you can help me. My MacBook pro has started crashing - not all the time - but often when I am on the intranet and when I have just opened it (not necessarily just logged on). This is the latest report that I was given, when it crashed:

    I hope someone can help!

You have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the log is showing a problem with the NVIDIA GPU. "GPU Panic" means a GPU issue.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a defective NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics... Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller. I recommend you to print the log

  • Do I need Safari Power Saver if OS X 10.10.2 already installed in MacBook Air? If not, why do I keep getting pop-ups inviting me to download it?

    See summary-it says it all.

The Safari Power Saver isn't a download; it's a built-in feature. It can be turned off from the Advanced tab of Safari's preferences.

  • Mac keeps freezing. hold down power until computer turns off.

My brand new macbook pro 13".... keeps randomly freezing up while on the internet, on legitimate sites. A black box pops up and says: You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off. So I do this, turn it back on, and ten minutes later it happens again. I've gone into disk utility to repair disk utility, any other suggestions?

Contact Apple and get it serviced or exchanged. You are experiencing kernel panics--usually hardware-related.

However, earlier this year, I had the symptoms of a hard drive crash, and I was able to "fix" it by simply removing the hard drive from my computer, blowing on it, and putting it back in. I told the genius this, and she said that my symptoms were such that she wouldn't be surprised if it was the hard drive that was the problem. So I bought a new hard drive and an enclosure.
So then I set my mac up again and reinstall snow leopard, and I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer my files from my old hard drive (which, by the way, never officially crashed and was not turning up any suspicious readings on any of the tests ran on it). Migration assistant refused to work... I would wait for hours while it "calculated" the volume of the files I wanted to transfer... I didn't even get to hit the "transfer" button before MA freezed up, it was as soon as the first screen, the one where I selected which files I wanted to transfer, opened. The "settings" files were the only ones that ever calculated (171 KB), the "users," "applications," and "other files" all seemed to get caught in a loop and would never calculate.
So I decided that maybe MA is the problem and that I should try to transfer my files using set up assistant. I went back to the genius bar to have my mac wiped and snow leopard 10.6.8 downloaded again. This time, when I was going through the set up procedure, I clicked the "transfer files from another volume on this mac" button (whereas last time I ignored this step to use MA), but AGAIN, I am brought to the "calculation" page that fails to calculate. Only this time, it only bothers to calculate for about 45 seconds before the screen blacks out and I am brought to the beginning of the set up process (the "use English for the main language" part). At first, it used to play the start up video too, but now it just brings me to the language screen.
Anyways, I am about ready to tear my eyebrows out. All I want to do is transfer my stupid files. Does anyone know why my mac keeps starting the set-up process over/how I can make set up assistant work??
P.S. when I had my mac set up the second time, I tried copying files to my desktop by dragging them out of the hard drive. THIS would actually calculate how many files it needed to copy over, but within a few minutes, I would get some strange error message saying that something couldn't be copied because some file was open/couldn't be found (I got both kinds). And then the whole process would abort.
Should I put my old hard drive back in my mac and try to do a clone or something on it? I don't really know how this works but I thought it was unneccessary since everything should be on the hard drive...? Will it mess up my new OS install to have the old hard drive put into the computer before it's been set up?
My old hard drive also had all the software updates and was the same OS version as on the new one.

Do you have a backup that you can restore from? Your old hard drive seems to be the problem.
