Why is Mac suddenly so slow

Why is my iMac slow lately -- as if it's on a few second delay -- typing, clicking, everything!  ???  What can I do?

How big is your hard drive, how full is it, and is the data backed up? Is Spotlight indexing, or is Time Machine running?

  • Why is Mac Help so slow?

Why is Mac Help so teeth-grindingly slow in Lion? Perhaps because Lion is a download-only OS, Apple seems to have put the entire Help System online, but Surely there is a way to download the help system to my Mac?
It often takes half a minute just to get my search results, and if I do several searches, this really adds up! in addition, if I am downloading something etc. the help system will give me the message that my Mac is not connected to the Internet. Is this normal?
I am much less likely to use the help system now because it works so poorly.

I'm not familiar with TinkerTool system (just the free TinkerTool app).
Anyway, deleting caches and plists according to these instructions helped a great deal.
That's probably sufficient, but Help has changed significantly since Snow Leopard, and the X Lab articles don't seem to have been updated since then.

  • Mac suddenly running slow and freezing frequently after software update

Hi, first post. I have recently wiped my hard drive after my new macbook pro started crashing frequently and suddenly running slow, however, it all seemed fine for a few days until I ran the software update, and after failing because it was unable to "expand", everything started running slowly and freezing left right and center.
This is really grinding my gears, and I have been looking for solutions online for ages now, can anyone here help?

I'm sure that my laptop isn't that broken since it is quite new (september).
You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care and get a case number.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Why Would My Mac Suddenly Run Slow?

For two days now my Mac is just "crawling." I haven't added anything.
Everything was OK before about 2 days ago.
Is this common? Is it a temporary issue? I hope so.

  • Mac suddenly very slow

All of a sudden my mac started running very slow.
first i opened activity-monitor to see what was wrong. I didnt see any unusual ram-usage. But the kernel_task had a CPU-time of 32 000. I cant seem to find any other explenation for why this is happening.
when i try to use my computer pretty much every task takes ages. Everything from doing stuff on the internet to browsing around in finder. Im also having trouble starting up my computer, i have to hold in the power button very long for it to respond. It also turns itself of without any reason.
Whats weird though is that my computer still manages to run movies in VLC smoothly.
    Help would realy be appriciated

Thanks for the feedback.  It is the original disk.  Where should I go to get a replacement disk?  Should I buy the same Hitachi disk?  For the backup, should I use Time Machine, I presume?  TIA
Amazon, OWC or any other supplier will sell you a disk.
No need to get the same disk - that model is getting old now & may be difficult to find on sale, newer SATA disks should perform better. Consider an SSD instead especially since you have less than 250 GB of data, they are faster than spinning disks but cost more. Just give yourself some room to grow if you think your disk usage is growing over time.
Time Machine is OK as a backup.
I prefer to make a clone in addition to Time Machine. Clones are bootable when made correctly (SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner or even Disk Utility will do that). There is no reason to erase this disk if it is replaced so get a case or USB to SATA connector & you can read it via USB. Cloning the current boot disk may be a good idea since it is apparently failing.

  • Mac suddenly very slow and other problems

Since a few days ago I've been experiencing the following problems:
+ VERY long startup time (more than four minutes vs. about a minute previously).
+ When starting an application, the system frequently hangs for a few seconds. (While it's hanging, sometimes the process is marked "doesn't react" in Activity Monitor).
+ Everything feels much slower and less responsive than it used to be and I'm frequently getting the spinning pinwheel.
+ Parallels doesn't start any more. After double-clicking the Parallels desktop icon, the icon jumps up and down in the dock for a little while and then just disappears.
The problem may or may not be related to the removal of my Bootcamp partition, which I did shortly before the problems started to occur. I don't remember if the problems started immediately after the removal of the Bootcamp partition but I think it's likely that there is a connection.
I did lots of things to find the cause and solve the problem, to no avail:
+ Made sure that after the Bootcamp removal the Mac HD is selected as the start volume.
+ Checked the HD using Disc Utility (no errors found)
+ Repaired permissions using Disc Utility
+ Created a new user account (problem persisted)
    + Cleared system caches
+ Ran various checks using Onyx (no problems found)
+ Deleted PRAM by starting up and pressing ALT-CMD-R-P
+ Checked for viruses (no viruses found)
    + Unplugged all USB devices
+ Reinstalled OS X ("archive and install")
    None of this helped.
    Observations:
+ I tried to start in safe mode but that made the startup procedure even slower, I was seeing the Apple logo and the grey spinning wheel for almost 10 minutes alone.
+ According to Activity Monitor there's always lots of free memory and CPU power.
I'm really clueless as to what else I could do other than wiping the HD and reinstalling everything from scratch or sending the machine back to Apple. Any ideas would be *very much appreciated*!

Hard to believe, the problem is back!
Everything worked just fine last night. This morning I turn the iMac on and the problems are back: Extremely long time to startup, application hangs, everything super slow.
    Any ideas?
I restarted in verbose mode and took some pictures, in case that helps...

  • Airport Express - running out of ideas why it's suddenly so slow

I'm hoping someone knows what's going on here - there must be something obvious that I'm missing.
    The facts are:
    - When I plug directly into my Billion ADSL modem via Ethernet, if I run a broadband speed test, it's up around 7000 kb/s, which is our ADSL speed.
    - When I plug the Airport Express into the Billion modem and run a broadband speed test, it's stuck on about 230 kb/s.
    - Strangely, however, I can run two, three or four speed tests via Airport and all run at the same speed.
So it seems that there's no issue with speed to the Airport, it's almost as if it's limiting the size of each individual connection?
Here are the (unsuccessful) steps I've taken to diagnose it:
    - Changing the modem to bridge instead of routing - no change
    - Toggling interference robustness - no change
    - Turning off our cordless phone and changing wireless channel - no change
    - Resetting all modem and Airport settings - no change
The speed slowness is being experienced across all our laptops - both Mac and PC - and it doesn't matter if only one person is online or all of us.
Anything else I should be trying? Is there something obvious I've missed in trying to diagnose it?

  • TS3623 why is it suddenly so slow?  going to take 1 hour 36 minutes to load Looper?  It's never been like that the last many years.  What happened?

    What happened to Apple TV?
It now wants to take 1 hour 36 minutes to load before I can watch Looper?
It's never been like that before until the latest update a few days ago.
    What went wrong?
Did anyone from inside Apple say anything?
Help.  I want to get back to my movies and I don't have 2 hours to wait.

I finally unplugged the ATV and plugged it back in and it fixed itself.  Thank you.  Don't understand why the update reboot did not do this automatically.

  • Why my Mac suddenly did not recognize my iPhone :( Please help...

I recently updated my iPhone 3GS to version 4.0.1 and I am using MacBook 10.4.11. Everything went well from updating, transferring songs from iTunes and photos from iPhoto until 2 days ago I connected my iPhone to my Mac and it didn't recognise it. It's not even charging. I have no idea what went wrong.
    Please help...
    Thank you.

  • General inquiry - Why ar .Mac and publishing/accessing iWeb sites so slow??

    Greetings,
I do realize that that general topic has been addressed somehow many times, in whole or in parts. I am just shooting for a general update on the subject(s).
I have grown fond of iWeb and just renewed my .Mac subscription. I am also a user of Dreamweaver and FrontPage. I just find the iWeb/.Mac combination so straight forward and... irresistible fun to play with!
BUT, before i commit more to that environment, I need to know - again:
    1. Why is .Mac/iDisk so slow in access?
    2. Correspondingly, publishing to .Mac and iDisk is slow. Why, actually?
    3. Difficulties in accessing iWeb sites published to .Mac/iDisk when using InternetExplorer (which, whether we want it or not, IS the predominant browser out there...). We know Firefox is better at it.
    4. Ultimately, would publishing iWeb sites to other servers (I have a couple of non-iWeb websites currently hosted elsewhere) make publishing AND accessing such sites speedier?
I will appreciate any advice, input, assessment.
    - Roger T

I think it's because it's more a social server with a lot of server side features available for .Mac users and iLife applications. Therefore there's a fair amount of server work when users use it for email, web sites with slideshows, backing up, etc. A commercial server will be much faster. There are othesr here that know more about servers than I and can give you a more technical explanation. But you're right, it is slow but convenient.

  • Why my mac is os x 10.8.3 booting and login very slow

i'm useing MBP15 mid 2012 (core-i7, 8gb ram, os x10.8.3) i bought this pc about a month ago. when i first boot it, it was like lighting first but now after 1 month it takes 1min+ to bootup and login why my mac is getting slower plz help me to solve this problem

Once in a while my Macbook Pro and Macbook Air sometimes experience a slow boot time and slow in performance.
I've done the following and it seems to work for me - give it a shot.
First I would open disk utility and verify disk permissions - if errors are found - i would repair it then restart my Macbook.
If no errors are found - then I go to system preferences - start up disk and select my drive as the start up drive and restart it - this would speed up your boot up process.
Also performing a SMC RESET does restore the performance of your Macbook Pro - you can read about what SMC RESET does for your Macbook when you do perform one.
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out.

  • Why does Acrobat suddenly not work on my Mac (won't open pdf files from a web page), yet I can open them from my iPhone? Everything worked fine yesteray.

    Hello:
I have a Mac running OS 10.8.5 and I use Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader. Today for some reason, any time I try and access a pdf file from a web page, it won't open. I get a blank window. PDF files already on my computer open fine and I can create PDF files from Word docs, but I can't download or view any pdf file from any web page. Strangely, PDF files on web pages open just fine on my iPhone.
I checked that both my copy of Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader are up-to-date. They are.
I checked that my copy of Firefox is up-to-date. It is. And nothing changed with Firefox within the last 24 hours.
I am a humble computer end-user. I am baffled as to why this would suddenly not work. I have not changed any settings, etc. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.
I checked your instructions you sent and as far as I can tell all of my settings, etc for Firefox (plugin updates and preferences) are correct but I am having the same problem.
However, everything works in Safari. I don't have time to attempt to diagnose why Firefox no longer works. I will just switch to Safari.
    Many thanks.

    Seems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it.
