Why is Mail so slow on Mountain Lion?

Hi there, I have about 200,000 e-mails in my mailbox. Double-clicking regularly takes 5-10 seconds to open with the "Loading..." message. Also, file attachments don't seem to be there when I open an e-mail downloaded 15 minutes or more prior. It feels a lot slower that Lion. I was hoping it would be faster. I hope they work on optimizing Mail, because it doesn't feel better than Lion.
Thanks...Neil

Quit Mail.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Delete the selected file. Relaunch Mail and test. It should re-index your mailboxes.

  • Why is Mail opening automatically in Mountain Lion?

I don't use Apple Mail under Mountain Lion (just Gmail online), but I do have several Google accounts configured, which I use for contacts and calendar.
Several times a day, Mail starts automatically and I cannot figure out why. I have turned off all mail-related notification and any other preferences I could find. But still, I find myself quitting Mail several time a day.
    How can I stop this?

    Hello,
If you set up your Google accounts on ML, then the Notification Center opens automatically your Mail client.
You can stop that in System Preferences > Notifications and drag “Mail” at the bottom of the window in “Not in Notification Center”.
    Hope this will help.

  • Mail very slow in Mountain Lion

The upgrade to Mountain Lion went smoothly but Mail works really badly afterwards.
When sending an email, it takes a few minutes before the mail goes out. And that's with any size message.
Auto-completion of mail addresses while composing takes multiple minutes. Even after it finally comes up with a list of email addresses, pressing enter on one also takes minutes to acknowledge
At various times, hitting the mail icon on the dock has no effect. The same is true with Command+TAB
Overall, the unresponsiveness is painful and making me wish I hadn't upgraded

This didn't solve my problem. First of all:
         $ ls /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
ls: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist: No such file or directory
but I do have the file in my local Library:
         $ pwd
         /Users/spate/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
         $  ls -l *mail*
         lrwxr-xr-x  1 spate  spate     64 Jul 26 11:08 com.apple.mail.LSSharedFileList.plist@ ->      ../../../../../Preferences/com.apple.mail.LSSharedFileList.plist
         -rw-------  1 spate  spate   6733 Jul 27 08:24 com.apple.mail.plist
         -rw-------  1 spate  spate  56130 Jul 27 08:12 com.apple.mail.plist.bak
This is after I moved com.apple.mail.plist to com.apple.mail.plist.bak and then started Mail again. As you can see, it created a new, much smaller com.apple.mail.plist
No luck - just as painfully slow as before!
    This is horribly painful!

  • Mail running slow with Mountain Lion

It seems that the Mail application has slowed significantly since upgrading to Mountain Lion with frequent lags when attempting to swith email accounts.  My iMac also is very slow to respond after being idle for a significant period.  Are others experiencing these issues with the new OS?

  • Why has Mail stopped working in Mountain Lion?

I installed Mountain Lion and Mail was working. 2 days later Mail stopped. No longer getting IMAP messages via Gmail. No account listed for RSS feeds. ISO a down to earth manual for using new OS 10.8.

Question resolved by time. Must have been some sort of system glitch. All working fine now with no action on my part.

  • Why is startup so slow after mountain lion upgrade?!

please someone help i regret upgrading it to mountain lion now. it was a brand new macbook pro i just bought not even a month ago and i upgraded it 2 weeks after and it takes over 1min to startup ever since... it wasnt like that before it was upgraded. please someone help. i don't want to have to do another installation of the mountain lion because il have to pay for it for another download. and i don't know and not confident enough to do a clean install anyway, whatever that is. what's going on exactly? is it a bug that'll get fixed with an upcoming mountain-lion update? it's not a matter of using space i don't think because it's a brand new laptop and has hardly anything on it. the only different thing was the upgrade and the startup was so obviously slow i know it has to be that. please someone help me fix the slow startup..

  • Why is safari so slow with mountain lion?

Every page that I load in safari is extemely slow after upgrading to mountain lion. I dont have any other applications and it takes way too long. I can open the same page on my PC much faster. I really hope Apple releases an update soon because this is terrible. Apple even promotes mountain lion as having faster speeds for safari (what a joke).

It would be better if you explained what your program actually does - does it just do a dump of all user processes, does it check settings - what does it do that the built-in diagnostics or a list of command line instructions do not provide (that has as advantage that it's much more transparent what goes on)?
It basically does the same thing as Apple > About this Mac > More Info > System Report, but consolidates the important parts into a concise report that is easily pasted here in the forums.
After all, you are asking people to run an untrusted and probably unsigned program, so I'm actually happy they display a reluctance to do this.
It is signed with my Developer ID. All you will get is the "downloaded app" warning from Mountain Lion with the default Gatekeeper settings that allow both App Store apps and Developer ID-signed apps like EtreCheck.
I'm not saying you cannot be trusted - I merely observe that the reluctance to run an unknown program is not only understandable, but even commendable..

  • Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow, Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow

Why is Safari so slow after Mountain Lion upgrade?

I have a home Optimum wifi network with Boost connecting to an Airport, with a second Airport extending, and an Airport Express extending. I have a MacBook Pro, last year's model, two iMacs, a year old each, and an older iMac. (If necessary I can get all the models etc, but I just want to express the problem). The two new iMacs and MBP are running Mountain Lion. The older Lion.
Since upgrading to ML my connection speed both over the wifi and directly connecting to the router has dropped from 30-50 down and 5 up to between 1-4 down and 4 up. I have had the cable folks here to test lines. We've swapped out the modem with a new one. I bought a new netgear N600. Everything led to the same result.
Here's the odd part. When restarting the modem and plugging it directly into the powerbook, initial tests show 30-50 up and 5 down. But once you reconnect to wifi, lose speed, the re-connect directly to the modem the slowness persists directly connected to the modem.
So I start suspecting Mountain Lion. BUT the older iMac cannot be upgraded to Mountain and is still running Lion and has the same issue. The equipment is in the same place it's always been. We've added no electronics that would be interfering with signals.
Everyone is stumped and looking suspicously at the computer and OS. Please help. I'm beginning to hear the bing bong bing bong of dial up in my head.

  • Why was deleted the RSS reader in Mail on OS X Mountain Lion?

Why was deleted the RSS reader in Mail on OS X Mountain Lion?
How can I re-enable the RSS reader?

All RSS Readers that I tested from MacAppStore are much worst than Mail's in Lion.
Hate them all. I'm using blogtrottr.com to compile all RSS and send me via email. But it's flooding my mailbox. There're a bunch of them that require a Google Reader account, and I won't do that. It doesn't matter to Google which RSS I'm following.
I wish Apple put RSS reading back to Mail. Stupid idea taking it off.

  • Why is Safari running so slow under Mountain Lion?

Why is Safari running so slow under Mountain Lion?

I have other mac's on my home network that are still running Snow Leopard and the are performing well. I wanted to use the iCloud so I upgraded and instantly started experiencing the slow down, to the point of ridiculousness. Other function are mixed some normal speed, others a day on the beach with the spinning ball. Firefox is at full speed, good thought, haven't checked Chrome yet.
Last night and hooked into a projection unit that adjusted my screen resolution for a presentation and after the event my Mac reset back to the normal settings and Safari launched and is running normal speeds so far. In the past there have been issues with performance speeds and certain resolutions, has anyone had similar luck or is this a fluke?

    Many factors.
Network congestion between you and Apple servers
Apple server load from others pondering the same question
    Large download file
Physical health of your download platform or local network connection

Launch/Utilities/Terminal and enter this command at the prompt:
    diskutil list
    Press return.
If it sees the disk, note the number of the disk (far left column) you want to mount.
    Then, enter this command:
    mount /dev/(number of disk)
Put in the number no parenthesis.
    Press Return.
If that doesn't wortk try the same with this command...
    mount force /dev/(number of disk)

  • Why can't the finder in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 find files that have successfully downloaded, or that other programs can find?

Why can't the finder in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 find files that have successfully downloaded, or that other programs can find?
This happens with maybe 1 out of 5 files. These are files that have either an ."aa" extention, or or are libraries that icloud can see, but finder can't.

Files beginning with a period are invisible and library files are system files. Spotlight cannot find either unless configured to do so (btw, this is not a Finder issue but a Spotlight issue.)
Get Spotlight to search system files (and more)
Enter the search term in the Finder window's search field.
Click the [+] button in the search bar to add a search option.
In the first drop down menu choose Other.
Choose “System Files” from the list that pops up (and check the box to place in drop down menu to avoid this step later,) click on the OK button.
Now back in the Finder choose Include from the second drop down menu.
