Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Here is the Etrecheck output:

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Why default jdk not 1.6 after a fresh install?

As a followup to my last post [http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5270493&tstart=0|http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5270493&tstart=0], I installed jdk 1.6.0_04 just now on a solaris box that has this OS:
SunOS asm03 5.10 Generic_120011-14 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220I followed the instructions here [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jdk/install-solaris.html|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jdk/install-solaris.html] (decided for now to only install the 32 bit JVM as it is faster than the 64 bit one and I do not immediately need to address > 4 GB).
I used the tar file approach, instead of the .sh file approach.
Installation using pkgadd seemed to go off without a hitch.
    But whenever I execute
         java -versionor
/usr/java/bin/java -fullversionI always pick up the old JDK 1.5, and not my newly installed JDK 1.6, as the installation notes linked to above indicate should have happened.
Anyone know what went wrong? I did not notice any warnings from the pkgadd process.
Should I just manually change the /usr/java symbolic link to point to /usr/jdk/jdk1.6.0_04?

    SolarisSAinPA wrote:
/usr/bin/java is a link and you need to recreate it to point to new jdk
The install instructions at [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jdk/install-solaris.html |http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jdk/install-solaris.html ] have a section titled: Solaris Package Install - Selecting the Default Java Platform which includes info on updating the link. From those instructions, which I too cited in my original post, I ended up simply manually executing
ln -s /usr/jdk/jdk1.6.0_04 /usr/javato make my freshly installed jdk the default.
What I was puzzled about is why the jdk6 installer did not do this itself! From that URL, I was under the impression that an install of jdk6 on a solaris10 box would autoupdate links like that. Evidently, it doesn't (at least if jdk5 is already there).

  • Do I Need To Install Lenovo Drivers After A Fresh Install Of Windows 7 Pro

I've just installed Windows 7 Pro (with SP1) on a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge and after running the Lenovo System Update utiltiy it doesn't list any drivers that need installing.
When I had a look at the Drivers & Downloads section of this website it lists lots of Windows 7 drivers available for the laptop.
I've looked in Device Manager and there are no issues reported so do I leave it as is or do I download all the drivers and install them?
    www.fazzasblog.co.uk - www.helpdeskrules.co.uk

There are certain drivers that I will have to install such as the ThinkVantage Active Protection System which is one of the great things about Lenovo laptops.
I'm just surprised that after running the the ThinkVantage System Update it said there were no driver updates available for my system.
The System Update is a fantastic idea, in my experience of using it on over 120 laptops, it's only around 70% usefull and a lot of manual driver downloading is still needed.

  • MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite

    Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

  • After connecting my iPhone to my Macbook Pro to download photos to my phone, my pages application is now gone from my computer. The icon is still in the dock. What happened and how do I get it back?

After connecting my iphone to my Macbook Pro to download photos to my phone yesterday, my Pages application is gone from my computer. The icon is still in the dock. What happened and how do I get it back? Its not in my trash or anywhere else.

The other 2 applications open like normal. All three give me info.
    Pages     ver.4.1          265.8MB
    Numbers ver. 2.1          89.5MB
    Keynote ver. 5.1.1        238.1MB
They all list Apr 3 as the last time opened. That was when I upgraded to Mavericks. I certainly used pages and numbers since then as I have alot of my work files on this computer?
Just very odd. I did find my original iWorks disc from when I bought the computer. I'm assuming i can reinstall it. Will try that. Thank you for all your help. Would still like to know what did happen?

  • I want to install Mavericks on my new SSD before putting it in my MacBook Pro, is this possible?

I want to install Mavericks on my new SSD before putting it in my MacBook Pro, is this possible? If so how can I do it. My MBP can run and is running Macericks now on my HDD. I do not want to transfer my file, I would prefer a fresh install on my new SDD.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Connect the SSD with an external enclosure. Boot the system holding down the Command and R keys to get to the Recovery partition. Partition and format the drive with Disk Utility, then install. You're done.
