Page outs seem worse than before. Could it be malware? Is there anyway to upgrade RAM or have I maxed out?
Thanks again.

My imac was running quickly since purchase untill mavericks update, now when finder open it takes a few minutes to full with content, apps take longer to open and generally fairly sluggish.
21.5" iMac (late 2009)

Core2Duo chip (3.3GHZ)

Anybody with similar problem or know any causes?

AdamI think it´s not the best idea to install the newest version like Mavericks on this "old" mac. Maybe your iMac will be faster with an SSD. Sorry about my english;-)

I've read through a number of answers, but still having the same problem. Since upgrading to Mavericks in October, my MBP has been slow. Ot goes through periods of being OK, but recently perfomance has degraded again. Any suggestions more than welcome - I feel like I'm running Windows 95 on a Pentium machine...

Why is firefox running so slow
why is firefox running so slowly?
Can be Add-ons. Start up Fx in Safe Mode to test by holding down the Option key. This will run without any Add-ons. If it's OK like that, disable them all and then add them back one at a time to see which one is responsible.

FCE is running very slowly lately, freezing a lot...
I have about had enough! It use to not be this way... why is it running so slowly and freezing? Do I need to re-install FCE? or would I lose my projects if I did that?
Help! Before you reinstall FCE you should try trashing the preferences like this:-
http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
These documents will show how to uninstall FCE:-
FCE 1 + 2 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93688
FCE 3, 3.5 and 4 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
Also think about any updates, upgrades or installations you have recently made on your computer that might account for the poor performance. -
So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust? My MBP runs much hotter since the upgrade. Why do I need ot sit around watching Activity Monitor, manually controlling my fans, and deleting extensions that I enjoy using. Don't even get me started on the Quicktime/Mov issues. I had none of these issues on Mountian Lion. Searching these forums, I see it's not just me. Why would Apple release a new system w/o peoperly testing it on MBPs?
I don't have time for trial and error solutions. I've tried the obvious ones. No help. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion? Or better yet, a Mavericks update that adresses these problems? As of now, I want out of Mavericks ASAP.
My processor is 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7.
8 GB 1600 MHZ DDR3 memory.
13inch MBP purchased ust over a year ago- 1-13.jonny a wrote:
Nope, it'a not just me, see above. And yup- I'm backed up, But I don't own a Mountain lion install disc. That's why I was posting here in the first place. Thanks
Nobody owns a ML install disc - ML was only ever distributed as a download from the Mac App Store.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you can boot into recovery mode and restore from your Moutain Lion TM backup volume. If you have a system clone, then you can boot from the clone, and just clone ML back onto your internal drive.
Going back to your previous installation from a backup should be trivially simply if you have the backup in hand. -
Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks
I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.
I have attached the Etrecheck output FYI
Thanks
Andrew

2012 Macbook Pro running slowly since mavericks update
Since updating to Mavericks when it was first released my macbok pro has been running very slowly. Starting up apps takes longer, hangs occur when switching between apps or even browser tabs, when i close the lid the laptop won't go to sleep but instead heats up and i can't listen to a song on itunes the whole way through without several 20 or so second pauses. I have tried repair permissions (this oddly improves performance when its running), resetting NVRAM/PRAM. resetting SMC and a Hardware test but nothing worked/ no problems identified. The problems still occur in safe mode and when i added a new user. I also removed any apps or software that could be causing it such as chrome but this didn't help.
Similar problems occured the last time i update the mac, though they were much more severe and lead to the hard drive being replaced at the apple store. It had been running smoothly until the mavericks update.
After looking at similar posts i took the liberty of providing the following information:

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you have tried a lot of good troubleshooting steps. Since the behavior persists in safe mode and a new user, and you have effectively ruled out third party software conflicts, I recommend reinstalling Mavericks next:

Macbook pro running painfully slowly since upgrade to Mavericks and worse since Yosemite
Hi, since upgrading to Mavericks my previously excellent 2011 Macbook Pro is running painfully slowly, and things have only got worse since the upgrade to Yosemite. It takes anything up to 10 minutes to get fully functional from opening the lid on standby, can take a good 5 minutes to connect to wifi, and I am getting stuck with constant spinning beach balls. I've cleaned things up, and deleted anything unnecessary so I have adequate space on the HDD but this doesn't seem to make any difference, and I'm not running any particularly memory hungry software. It was working perfectly before these upgrades and I'm really wishing I could just downgrade back to Mountain Lion now! I'm no expert so could really use some help. Do I just need more RAM or is this something more complicated?
I've run Etresoft and here are the results (I note there is some adware listed on Safari, but I don't use it ,using Chrome and Firefox instead):

Why is my Macbook pro running so slowly?
I've tried for the past week to try and figure out why my macbook pro has been running extremely slow recently (began about a week and a half ago). I have downloaded and run both Disk Doctor and Memory clean to try and free up memory and hard drive space, which hasn't helped. Next, I downloaded Bitdefender Virus Scanner thinking I may have accidentally downloaded some malware, but the scanner found nothing wrong. I'm honestly at a loss right now. Below is my EtreCheck, I don't really understand it but I'm hoping one of you can see where the problem lies. Thanks for any and all help you guys can do, college starts up in two days and I need my computer back to normal speed by then.

Jan 16, 2015, 02:18:04 PM Self test - passed1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
[Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "[Process completed] to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I'm getting "Installer disk not found" message during boot camp 5 and windows 8 install on late 2001 MBP running Mavericks. Any ideas?
I've downloaded the Window support option software and the WindowSetupBox.exe and copied it to the USB drive.
Thanks TimYou might have better luck in the Boot Camp community. I'll ask the hosts to relocate your post.

I have a 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. Tried to install Mavericks, but it keeps telling me " cannot install Mavericks because disc is used for Time Machine backup". I tried disabling TM by issuing the command in console " sudo tmutil disable local". Still no luck. Is there a way of erasing all the time machine backups from my system disc?
Thanks. Thanks Matt. I tried erasing the "Backups.backupdb" folder. It does not allow me to do that, inspite of "sudo"-ing. I ended up installing Mavericks on another disc, and use disc migration assistant to transfer my data, before swapping out the old disc from the MBP.

I just upgraded to Mavericks and now my Intel iMac is running more slowly. There have been no other changes. What's up with this???
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Everything on my Macbook Pro with Mavericks runs very slowly
I have a 13" macbook pro with Mavericks operating system, and it is only a little over a year old. In the last 2 or 3 months everything on the computer has been running incredibly slowly.
I first noticed it when streaming online videos, the audio would be several seconds ahead of the video, but the lagging has started everywhere else too. When I type the text appears several seconds after it has been typed, it takes much longer than it should to scroll down webpages and the cursor often freezes, I have even noticed a very long lag switching between webpages or applications.
I have very few things saved on this computer, just some Word documents and pictures. I did have Sims 3 installed but I uninstalled it thinking it may be the problem.
I have also noticed a very audible metallic plinking noise that could be unrelated. It started ] maybe 2 months before the lagging did and sounds like it's coming from the bottom right hand corner of the computer. I'm considering resetting my computer to factory settings because I haven't been able to find anything to fix this issue. The hard drive is located in the bottom right of your model and I experienced a very similar issue twice in less than a year of purchase. I suggest you back all your data up as soon as possible as it may be the signs of a hard drive beginning to fail. My symptoms were it would take longer to start up and I would get the spinning ball when I secondary clicked. Before it would fail, I would try and repair errors found in disk utility and it would say it could not be repaired, back up as much data as you can. By that point, it was too late to back anything up. From there, I would get a loading bar on startup and once it loaded, it would shut down. But it could be a less serious issue as well. It could also be the SMC, PRAM, or errors in your hard drive's coding. But before you follow these steps, back all your stuff up that you want or need in case it is your hard drive. Boot the machine into recovery mode by holding in command and r as soon as you turn it on. After it loads, you should get a box to pick your language. Select your language and select disk utility. In there, click Macintosh HD and verify the disk. If anything appears in red text, there are errors that need to be fixed. All you have to do is click repair. If it says they can't be repaired and to back up your data, your hard drive may have failed. To reset the SMC, plug in the mac and shut it down. On the left side, located the control, option, and shift keys. Hold those down along with the power button. Hold it for a few seconds and let them go. It's normal the machine won't turn on and the light on the charger will change state. Next, reset the PRAM. Shut down the Mac and located command, option, P, and R on your keyboard. You're going to turn on the Mac and as soon as you do so, hold those four keys down. It's going to shut down immediately but keep holding them in. It will turn on and make the "bong" noise like it normally does. Let it cycle about two or three times and let the keys go and wait for it to start up.
I hope this helps and good luck!

Integrating Web server (eg Apache) with the application server
I am thinking a project in which I use more static HTML files than JSPs. One way is to use an Apache server to display those HTML files (it should be faster), and deploy the JSPs into the J2EE server; another way is just simple to change the web cont
