Why is menu size so much larger than the files?
I am somewhat perplexed - I'm making a single-layer dvd and have a simple single screen theme (no animation) - it has one drop zone. The movie has 28 chapters so there are five of them, but so far I've added only one montage of photos to each menu page - it's a "mobile" quality in media browser and ave only 10 - 20 MB, then one song. On average these movie clips are 1:00 to 2:00 min long and the music is cut to that length. So, all told, it's probably less than 110 MB in files - but when I look at the project properties, the menus are 3301 MB!!!
The movie itself is only 1.1 GB so what is going on?
It's preventing me from doing the project and I've got no idea why it's making the menu size so much larger than the file sizes?

The 2 min clips were natively 2 min - I had each one separate and actually converted to media browser in "mobile" size (b/c the drop zone was 4 x 6 in size in the theme). They were tiny - in most cases I was shortening the audio (e.g. the song was 4 minutes and I was setting the loop to only 1:30 b/c that's how long the video clip was on the menu).
BUT, to resolve the question (I always like to post the answer) - I ended up duplicating the project to try to reimport the video. It was a fresh iDVD project and I happened to click on the project tree of screens - and, lo and behold, the ENTIRE menu was duplicated for some reason (and the movie, actually). I went back to the original and it was the same! I have no idea how that would happen do you? It only had one main menu screen - and then an entire duplicate menu - which I wouldn't even know how to access if I didn't see it in the project menu tree?
The only think of is that at one point I added a title menu link to the scene selection - it gave me a warning that my menu was more than 12 minutes, did I want to fix or ignore and fix later - which confused me b/c it was under 12 min, then but I clicked ignore. Does that create an alternate title menu and send people back to something else?
Anyway, I deleted the entire extra scene selection menus (5 of them) and it was back to under 4 GB.
So, I was able to burn, but still wondering about creating the "title menu" link on scene selections? It drives me crazy that it doesn't automatically do that so I like to add "main menu" links.

Why is my Time Machine backup so much larger than the files being backed up?

Note that Server HD and Archive are the only non-excluded disks and the estimated backup size is 563.2 GB (this corresponds with the actual usage on those drives.
However, when I run time machine, it keeps going until by 2TB backup drive is nearly full! And that's with only a single backup instance and nothing else on the drive:

If I don't backup the other external drive, the backup size doesn't blow up like this.Just to clarify, the reason why Time Machine backups are generally small is that TM makes extensive use of hard links. symbolic links are small files that point to a different file system entry, while hard links point directly to the original file data on disk (hard links are unintuitive - they are like having multiple doors into a room, except that you can place the doors anywhere you like and still get to the room). So even though there may be dozens of backups of a disk, most of the backed-up items will only have one data source on disk, with only items that have changed needing new representations.
I suspect that when you try to backup a time machine backup, it is converting the hard links into separate on-disk representations - basically taking every pointer to a given piece of on-disk data and creating a new file from it. I'm not sure if that would be a linear or geometric size increase (it sounds like the latter), but either way it's going to get ugly fairly fast. -
My files have suddenly started opening in Photoshop CC in a much larger size: a 1mg file will open as 9mg, for instance. The more layers I add, the more the multiplication until I'm up so large the program closes down. This never happened before and I don't know if I've changed something by accident or what. HELP!
Let's try something easy. Reset your preferences.
If in Windows, close Photoshop, then double click the PS icon to start it.
Now very quickly hold down the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys, and you will see a delete settings dialog where you would answer "Yes".
See if that fixes it, if not...we will need more information:

My hard drive on my Imac keeps clogging up automatically. The personal folder is now 925 GB which is much larger than the sum of the underlying subfolders. I cannot see what"s causing this. Anyone?

Why are my trimmed QT movies larger than the original?
I have a bunch of raw .dv files copied over from my camcorder that have never been edited or opened in any other program. When I open in QT X and trim the file, the trimmed MOV version is often larger than the raw DV. On one file, I even trimmed about half of it away and it still came out larger. I was under the assumption that DV is not compressed and neither is raw MOV,
After trimming the file and saving it, I select "movie" as the format since at this point I want to leave the files in as raw as a format as possible before I bring into an editing program like iMovie.
Any ideas?
ThanksSince QuickTime X doesn't have any export "options" (other than dimensions) a "raw" DV Stream format should always be smaller in file size.
DV Stream is about 13 GB's per hour of recording. A QuickTime X "conversion" would use H.264 video and AAC audio codecs and should be about ten times smaller in file size.
Are you sure your files are DV Stream?
In any event, QuickTime X may not be the best tool for the job.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
A regular "save" after doing any edits will replace your source file with the newer version. No way to restore any of the edited information so you should use save as (keeping the original). -
I have an iphone 4s and when I try to connect to my shared library I see an icon of a circle that only becomes half full. It does not connect. I also have an ipad, which connects without incident. My itunes library is larger than the capacity of both devices, so that cannot be the issue. How can I get the phone to connect with my shared library?
My husband and I are using the same iTunes account on all mac & pc computers, but the libraries are different on each machine. We always manually manage our music (no auto sync). iTunes is up to date on the PCs. My husband uses our joint iTunes account on his pc, but once again, has a different collection in his library from those on the other machines. He can't load any music from his PC to his iphone 4. I can load music from my mac library to my iphone 4s, but cannot load from my pc library to my iphone 4s. How can I switch my main library that it syncs with from the mac to the pc?

My jpeg file sizes are much larger than they used to be.
Just recently the file sizes on my .jpeg files have become excessively larger than they used to be just a week or so ago. Where I used to go almost a week to need to archive to DVD a bunch of saved images, I've now got to save to DVD almost daily.
For example, a 300x300 pixel image which shoud be about 32 Kb reads 383 Kb in the finder. I'm not doing anything to these images, just draging and droping.
Where I used to get 7 K files on a DVD, I'm now getting less than 2 K files to each disc.
Any thoughts on what's changed and how to fix it?What App & JPEG compression rating are you using, some apps can reduce file size by dropping colors for instance...

Why is Keynote storing images 20x larger than the original file size upon import?
In Keynote, I'll add a 150KB PNG image to a slide and the 500KB presentation goes to 3.7MB... a more than 3MB increase. I'm trying to troubleshoot large file sizes as a simple deck takes up 50-100MB on disk. Anyone know what is going on to make the file 20x larger once added to Keynote? And how I can keep the file size down? The 'Reduce File Size' option is worthless in this case... offering a less than 10% reduction on the earlier 20x amplification. Thanks

Yes converting an existing version 5 file in to Keynote 6 does many strange things. Any existing version 5 files I have, I continue to edit in 5. When starting a new presentation, I can use 6 without many problems at all.
I provided the files to replicate the issue to Apple support and never heard back.
Apple do not provide feedback to users on issues, they only request information from users. -
Why/how is my iPhoto library larger than the hard drive it is stored on?
I store my iPhoto library on a 2TB external hard drive. The library file itself claims to be 2.65TB and created 12 years before I purchased the computer (see pic). I have confirmed this on other computers.
I know my library to actually be closer to 680GB as I've been using it for a long time. When I click 'get info' on the drive itself, it shows it is around 945GB full which makes sense as there are other files also stored there.
Could someone please explain how a 2TB drive can hold a 2.65TB file? Then, could someone help me restore it back to its actual size? I would like to back up my library but can't easily move such a massive file. I am also worried about its stability as I presume something is corrupt in there.

p.s. When you look at the image below, you may notice other libraries (the one in question is highlighted). I have had MANY troubles with crashing libraries and gone through MANY rebuilds to get my library to where it is now; complete and working but oddly sized (and not appropriately backed up!). If I could easily and safely migrate all my photos, their originals, their edits, the places and faces etc to another program I would definitely consider it because iPhoto and Aperture are simply not behaving as I'd like them to.I am unsure if it has been formatted MacOS but it is a My Passport for Mac so I imagine it was initially set up correctly - especially as it has worked well until now.
You can check that by selecting your external drive in the Finder and using the command "File Get Info ⌘I " on the drive. The General section of the info panel will show you the File System.
I have never seen that symbol in in iPhoto. In Aperture it is marking photos that have been downloaded from Photo Stream or Flickr or Facebook. Are you syncing your library with any of these services? -
I used the preset H,264 Youtube 1080HD to export a video. The estimate size is 7308 MB {after I reduce the nitrate). The final size is 11.18 GB.
Why is so much different? Befor I Use the Premiere CS6 to export a simial size use the same format Is around 6GB.First of all, the estimated file size just an estimate based chiefly on the combination of the bitrate and duration. The actual size can vary significantly, depending in large part on the amount of change from frame to frame throughout the video. For example, if you encode two clips of identical duration to exactly the same settings, the only difference being the nature of the content--say on is a talking head interview shot with the camera locked down on a tripod while the other is skateboarding footage that was shot handheld--the size of two resulting outputs files will be widely divergent.
As to the comparison between CS6 and CC2014, note that the settings for some presets have been changed. For instance, the h.264 YouTube 1080 presets went from 8Mbps to 16. -
Disk space used much larger than actual files
I noticed this morning that Terminal was giving a warning about running out of swap space, which I thought was odd, as /var/vm was only at around ~10GB, but later when I tried to install some updates, I noticed that it said I only had 1.8MB free on my hard drive. I ran a df -h and it showed %iused at 100%. I immediately deleted some logs to free up a few megabytes of space and started hunting for what could have been hogging all my disk space, I seem to remember having 60GB free last time I checked. I was deleting a few small files, when I noticed this

Transmit Rate: 54The 300GB partition is the partition I am booting off of, and the one I was writing about. Disk0s1 is the EFI partition, 210MB. The other Internal hard drive is the core storage physical volume, already mounted, mounted in the image. Recovery HD is the 650MB system recovery partition.
I rebooted to the recovery partition and used Disk Utility to verify the volume, it said everything checked out alright.
In disk utility, the top entry has this data

Hi,
I recently changed jobs and want to archive all email (with attachments in place) for the associated work email account. I also plan to remove the old work email account (IMAP) from the list of active mailboxes in Apple Mail. I don't want Spotlight searches for personal or current work email cluttered with results from my old job.
I have created an archive of the old work account by doing Mailbox Archive for all of the IMAP folders for that account. The entire archive is 1.7GB in size.
Before I delete the old account from my Mail preferences, I want to make sure that I have really exported everything. So I've compared the size of the new archive folder with that of the mailbox folder in users/.../Library/Mail for that same account. That latter is 8.7GB in size. Why the enormous difference?
Can the difference be attributed to lack of compression and indices (which would be rebuilt if I import the archive) for spotlight searches? Am I missing something in the archive that I created?
I've created a zip of the system folder. Can I easily restore this at a latter time if I delete the email account from my Mail preferences?
Is there a better way to achieve my objective?
MitoidsI did find a "Recovered Messages" by looking in the the Mail client under "On My Mac" (I don't normally use that feature). One message with an accicental 99MB attachment that I never sent, was recovered ~60times, consuming 5.7GB.
I deleted all of those, but the size ~/Library/Mail/xxxaccount folder did not change much. It is still much larger than the Archive I created. BTW, this is an IMAP account that was syncing with corporate GMail. -
Navigate an image that is larger than the stage?
Hello, I would like some assistance getting this to work. I'm not even sure if its possible, but I will be eternally grateful for an answer.
I would like to have an image much larger than the stage, with little buttons all over it that play a MC when moused over. When the mouse reaches the edge of the screen, I want it to scroll so that the viewer can explore the whole image.
In short, its a map with destinations, and on mouse over the destinations play a MC. I'd like the viewer to be able to "explore" the map with the mouse.
It seems simple, is there a good way to do it?
Also, once it is done, is there a way to begin with the entire image shown, but then have it tween to its final (Very large) size, without breaking that functionality.

I would also suggest using TweenLite to do your tweening. You can simply google TweenLite to find it. -

Are the image all the same size the % files open into a document seems to vary with the number of pixels the image being opened has. Check the Image size.

I end up having to take a lot of high sample rate data for relativily long periods of time. When I save the data it is usually over 100 MB. When I load the data for post-processing though the amount of memory used is excessively higher than the file size. This causes my computer to crash because 1.5 GB is not enough. Is there a way to stop this from happening withoput splitting up the file into smaller files.
LabVIEW can efficiently handle large files, far beyond 100Mb, provided that care is taken in the coding of the loading/processing routines. Here are several suggestions:
1) Check out the resources National Instruments has put together (NI Developer Zone > Development Library > Measurement and Automation Software > LabVIEW > Development System > Optimizing Applications > Managing Memory), specifically the article entitled "Managing Large Data Sets in LabVIEW".
2) Load and process the data in chunks if possible.
3) Avoid sending the data to front panel indicators, using local/global variables for data storage, or changing data types unless absolutely necessary.
4) If using LabVIEW 7.1, use the "show buffer" tool to determine when LabVIEW is creating extra
copies of data in memory.
