Why is mercury playback engine greyed out on the r9 290

hey everyone so i just got the r9 290 and i thought CC was meant to enable open cl but the mercury playback is greyed out

Just a side note, probably ... that's a pretty decent card from "base specs" but on a system with barely enough RAM to operate the programs. You might want to go to the Hardware forum (from the panels on the side of the "Overview" page) and check out for info on that card & the Adobe DVA's.
I'd also recommend going over to ...
http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page
And looking around. Massive and detailed info (accurate, from intensive testing not from specs comparison & theory) on how computer builds and the Adobe DVA's interact.

  • Why is my iPhoto library greyed out in the Screensaver folder selection dialog on one iMac but not my other?

Why is my iPhoto library greyed out in the Screensaver folder selection dialog on one iMac but not my other?

I have an update to my issue above, with a Semi-solution found. I brought my Macbook Air back to the Genus bar today and they were able to identify (using “Activity Monitor”) that when the particular iPhoto library was being launched through iPhoto both Photostream and iPhoto's CPU% usage was excessively high (between 100% - 200% each). She discovered that if we turn off Photostream in iCloud settings iPhoto then behaved fast and snappy and CPU% came back down to a healthier level. When we turned Photostream back on the problem continued. After an hour of trying to trouble shoot why Photostream was causing the issue they recommended I keep Photostream turned off until a future software update/fix comes out. The particular Genus I worked with was not familiar with this issue. I’m very happy to at least be able to use iPhoto again, but if anyone has ideas or theories on how the Photostream conflict can be fixed please share. Thanks.

  • HT201077 Why is my photo stream greyed out in the iCloud Control Panel.

Why is my photo stream greyed out in the iCloud Control Panel?

I had the same problem. I think it must be caused by the fact that i bought a charger in Apple Store Tokyo, and then entered my email address on the warranty form. Ever since emails in Japanese started appearing. When I now enabled Shared Photo Streams, my friends got invitations from me in Japanese too.
I was looking everywhere for language settings, but they all seemed in order. On iCloud that is.
It turns out it was the language settings on my apple-ID, not my iCloud-ID that was wrong, after a purchase at Apple Store Tokyo. Who would have thought that these two IDs were related? Or maybe they should be, but then why are they not even more integrated? Duplicate language settings?
    This solved the problem:
    1. Log into appleid.apple.com
    2. Set the language.
The real problem however, is that Apple changed my language after a visit to an Apple Store. Come on! I already had a Norwegian apple-ID, a Norwegian credit card, and a Norwegian address. What could possibly make you think that I suddenly spoke Japanese? Ever happened that a tourist visited an Apple Store? Companies needs to learn that customers can make their own decisions, and often do, or want to do it, if they are allowed to do so. Examples of features that was designed not considering this fact: The play button on a Mac always launching iTunes, even though I'm already playing music in Spotify (and never use iTunes for music). Or Spotifys obsession with reporting everything you listen to, turning off the Private Session after 6 hours, so you have to make that setting every time you start playing music.

This is an option in the Print page, so you know where to cut your images aprt. I though this tick-box would become active once I had selected a border size, but no.

  • How do I know if I have Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL)?

    To anyone who can help,
    BACKGROUND
I am new to Premiere Pro and just started my first project on CC 2014.  A tutorial recommended I select 'Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL)' over 'Mercury Playback Engine Software Only' in the VIDEO AND RENDERING section of the PROJECT SETTINGS window.  Since the former option isn't grayed out, I'm assuming I have both to choose from, however, when I select 'Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL), only the audio will play back in my source window; the video no longer plays back.
    HARDWARE
I am on an (early 2008) Mac Pro desktop with two 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, and two ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics cards.
    I am running OS X 10.9.5.
    QUESTIONS
    1.  Is there a way to figure out if I actually have this 'Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL)' thing?
    2.  Is opting for 'Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL)' over 'Mercury Playback Engine Software Only' (the default) really even going to make a noticeable difference in how my 1080p 24 fps movie is rendered?
Thanks in advance to any advice offered!
    Shaun

I am not realy a mac person but Premiere can only use one graphics card. Can you disable one of the cards.
Might want to read this on how MPE works:

  • Mercury Graphics Engine, Mercury Playback Engine

I am confused by the required graphics hardware needed to support GPU processing by Adobe Photoshop & Premier CS-6.
Photoshop CS6: "Mercury Graphics Engine" (MGE):
My understanding is that ALL MGE functions are supported by both NVIDIA (CUDA) and AMD (OpenCL).
If this is true, then which of these cards (gaming is not a concern) would give the best PS6 performance:
    NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti 448 (? 1.2GB, not clear on this) ($270)
    AMD Radeon HD 6870 2GB ($220)
    AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB ($160)
Premier Pro CS6: "Mercury Playback Engine" (MPE):
MPE is even more confusing. Here it seems that CUDA and OpenCL do not both offer the same support.
It seems that AMD OpenCL will NOT support these MPE effects:
    Fast Blur effect
    Gaussion Blur effect
    Directional Blur effect
    Basic 3D effect
However, I am not, in general, interested in 'special effects' on my underwater nature videos!
I do now use PP4, but only do color correction, occasional sharpening or blurring, and a lot of cross-fade/cut-through-black transitions. So would MPE speed up any of these processes?
If NVIDIA chips are the only ones which support full MPE playback, does the GTX 560 do so? Looking on adobe (http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/mercury-playback-engine.edu.html) the GTX 470, 570, 580 are listed as compatible - GTX 560 is not mentioned.
Finally, what about AMD CrossFireX and Nvidia's SLI?
Do CrossFireX and SLI both support all functions of MGE and MPE?
That is, if one uses two identical (to be safe) graphics cards, will MGE & MPE both be able to take advantage of all of the GPUs?
Long and complicated post, I know - but Thanks for any help!
Incidentally, since I think it clear what my needs are (Modest budget Image and Video processing - not gaming) do any of you have other suggestions for a cost effective configuration giving the most bang-for-the-buck. I will not be building this system until W8 is out and stable with CS6.
Again, thank you for any help with this.

If NVIDIA chips are the only ones which support full MPE playback, does the GTX 560 do so? Looking on adobe (http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/mercury-playback-engine.edu.htm l) the GTX 470, 570, 580 are listed as compatible - GTX 560 is not mentioned.
What's not listed is not supported, it's as simple as that.
Do CrossFireX and SLI both support all functions of MGE and MPE?
Crossfire and SLI are just methods to connect multiple cards in addition to your PCI lanes. Connecting the wrong two cards doesn't make any of this work. Same rules apply: What's not listed is not supported.

  • Mercury Playback Engine GPU Enabled is greyed out. Why?

    Hello,
I'm using Premier Pro CS5 with a Mac Pro, Quad Core CPU x2, 16Gb RAM and the nVidea GTX 285 graphic card from EVGA and I just noticed in the PROJECT SETTING/ VIDEO RENDERING AND PLAYBACK/ RENDERER: Mercury Playback Engine Software Only (is selected). It's also greayed out and I can't change it to GPU enabled on this or any other project. Why? Is there something I need to do?
I have all the supported hardware and yet I'm not getting full use of the Mercury Playback Engine.
    Can anyone help please???
    Cheers

    Colin Thanks!
Downloaded the CUDA drivers and I now have access to the GPU enabled function (in fact it automatically switched to enabled in Premier Pro). I had recently updated the GPU drivers as EVGA offers this feature as a member/customer...whenever I log in to my account with them they advise if a new driver is available. However they don't mention anything about the CUDA drivers (hence the issue with the software only playback capability).
    Once again thanking YOU!!!

  • Intel Iris Pro GPU in new Macbook Pros supported by the Mercury Playback Engine?

Is the Intel Iris Pro GPU in the new Macbook Pros supported by the Mercury Playback Engine?

    Hi,
I've been wondering the same thing. I watched this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATKDuQOQw9k
if you jump to 07:50 the dude clearly shows that it IS supported in PPRo CC (which I have), but when I go to the project settings on my new MBP 15" with identical specs, the area where I can select gpu support is greyed out with no options to change from software only. Did the expert guy in the video accidentally show the settings from his old NVIDIA MBP? Very confusing!! Also, there's a lot of publicity around the Intel Iris Pro's great ability to render Open CL with Adobe PPRo. And even a video about it here:
    http://software.intel.com/en-us/videos/accelerating-video-production-with-opencl-and-intel -iris-graphics
Is this only for PC?? If so I imagine Adobe can get this going on Mac pretty damn fast, no?
    Please advise Adobe folk!
    Thanks!

  • AMD Radeon HD 6990 vs Mercury Playback Engine

I just installed an AMD Radeon HD 6990.
I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5
My Mercury Playback Engine "GPU" choice does not show up in Premiere.
    I tried the hack.
    Nothing.
I see my card is not listed in the http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html list, however older and less powerful models from within its same family are.
First of all, do I need to upgrade to CS6 to even enable Open CL type cards? And if so is there a chance the hack will then work?
And if upgrading is the only Open CL answer - is there a way to upgrade from CS5.5 to CS6 without getting involved in the creative cloud kookiness?
Thanks for any and all insight - I simply want to edit footage within Premiere while utilizing my more than adequate GPU.

    To be clear...
Using the Premiere CC trial -- with MPE GPU enabled I am fine within the software editing. I do see advantages on performance depending on the effects - but definitley more yellow lines than with GPU off and Software Only on. All good there.
What I am saying is when I am finished editing and go to export a file out - it crashes unless I switch MPE to Software Only, then it exports fine.
Beyond the bug itself, I am also asking if I really care. In other words does MPE with GPU enabled affect anything speed related when I am out of the editor and on to "exporting media". Because it was my understanding MPE has everything to do with editing within Premiere and nothing to do with once you hit "export" which then relies solely on your CPU since you are no longer "playing back" at that point.
    Any clarification/conifrmation on this specifically?
Exporting MPEG raw to mp4's which I do all day long for several years now from my current version of CS5.5 with no issue. But remember CS5.5 doesnt recognize my card as Open CL compatible, thats why we're giving CC a go.
As mentioned up front this is a brand new video card for me so I immediately grabbed the latest drivers. Asking for the specifics is a loaded question since AMD breaks down their driver versions into indivdual categories - so beyond saying its indeed the latest version according to amd site and autodetect I can say its Driver Package 12.104, Catalyts Version 13.4. etc. etc
Thanks for engaging me on this.

  • Mercury Playback Engine on Premiere Pro 8.0

I have the older version of Premiere Pro CC working well on my PC W8 using my GTX680. I discovered that I had installed the new Premiere Pro (2014) on my PC. When I started it up there was a message about the GPU acceleration and I found that the Mercury Playback Engine option was greyed out.I checked the text file and found my card listed there and I do not know what to do.

I have started PP CC 2014 several times and the Mercury Playback Engine option is always greyed out while the older version of PP CC still runs with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration. Do you know what that notice said to do? Was it something about updating drivers?

  • Video rendering and playback option greyed out on Premiere Pro CC 2014

I cannot even click on the Video rendering and playback drop down menu as it is greyed out.
I have a GeForce GTX 660 2GB card which should be supported as it has enough memory. I am on Windows 7.
Would really appreciate if someone has a solution how to enable Mercury Playback Engine in this situation.

Managed to fix the problem by downloading and installing the GeForce CUDA drivers as well as updating graphics card firmware.
The Mercury Playback engine enabled itself in premiere after the updates.

  • No Mercury Playback Engine for intel iris?

I'm using Premiere Pro CS6 and the option to use Mercury Playback Engine Accelerator for rendering is greyd out. Is there any way to fix this? I'm using:
Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch, Late 2013
    2.8 ghz Intel Core i7
    16gb 1600 MHz DDR3
    Intel Iris 1024 MB
Rendering is taking forever and I bought this machine specifically for rendering. Please tell me there is a way to make this work.

There is a no short answer that include a Yes.  There is a long answer that includes a No and explains why.
The Mercury Playback Engine uses two components, CUDA for nVidia cards and OpenCL for select ATI cards on Macintosh machines.  To get MPE working on other cards would require rewriting the way that we check the authentication of the cards.  That is something we've tried to enable in CC, however it is one of those advanced features that we will not be including in the perpetual product.  That's one of the downsides of the perpetual model.
Now, is MPE the end all solution for fast rendering?  No, it really isn't.  It can give a major boost, however having a powerful processor and solid RAM is still going to be a major help as well.  Add to that the fact that not all footage is sped up through Mercury use, and not all effects take advantage of Mercury boosts.  Sometimes projects take a long time to render.  Use the Adobe Media Encoder to queue up your encodes for your off hours, or just use it as an excuse to go get a cup of coffee or tea and relax.  Don't get too hung up on the idea of chasing the Mercury ideal.

  • Mercury Playback Engine Software Only in Premiere Pro CS6

The Mercury Playback Engine Software Only is greyed out.  Does this mean it is working or not?

    your question:
"The Mercury Playback Engine Software Only is greyed out.  Does this mean it is working or not?"
yes... it is 'greyed out' because it is your only option,
and premiere is working in "software only" mode by default !!!
if you follow the suggestion made in this thread:
    https://forums.adobe.com/message/7321155#7321155
...you might be able to select MPE, and as a result the menu will NOT
be 'greyed out', indicating that you can choose between the default of
'software only' or the alternate 'mercury playback engine'
    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
