Why is my 2006 iMac so slow now with Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

Hello,
I bought and installed Snow Leopard on my 2006 iMac so that i could use my new Lacie Minimus Drives for backup using Time Machine.
Since my install though the computer is slow and everything seems to take a long time to do. For instance, when i select one of the shortcuts in my bookmark bar i put the mouse icon over it and it takes 5 seconds for it to go dark grey so i can select it.
It's like it has a time delay on everything now. Everything is sooooo slow.
Also before i updated the OS there was this sound coming off the computer like it was doing something in the background, a sort of rustling/crinkling noise from the drive i think. When it makes this sound the computer will slow down and display that little spinning disc icon until the sound went away and then it would speed up again. This was another reason i wanted to wipe my drive and update my software. That sound is almost constant now.
I wanted to wipe my entire hard drive and install the Snow Leopard on a fresh new system. I usually do this once a year to get rid of any unwanted junk on my computer but i never realised that the Snow Leopard disc doesn't give you the option of 'Erase and Install'.
So, do i need to install Tiger with the 'Erase and Install' option, creating a fresh system, then install Snow Leopard and update it?
Also would installing new RAM improve my mac's performance? (MichelPM, thanks for your suggestion)
There's one on ebay made by Sandisk for sale at £30. It's 2GB and seems like the best option. It's listed below.
I have 1GB on board now so that would make it 3GB.
Would doing this get rid of these unwanted and very annoying sounds and time delays?
If i have to hear that rustling or see that little coloured disc for much longer i am going to lose it.
Thanks for you time.

Hello,
Thanks for the help everyone.
First, i have all my data/files backed up on my older Lacie drives. New ones are still in their boxes.
Second, the noise with the disc. It's not a clicking sound. It's more like the drive is struggling to do something.
It's not continuous, It happens when opening up itunes or iphoto or another app. Or when i try to open up a page on Safari, the page will start to load, the noise will start and either the noise stops and the page loads or the page stalls and the sound continues and then i just hit reload or quit Safari depending on how annoyed i am at the time! It did do this before i updated to SL but it seems to be more and more now!
If i have Safari, iPhoto and Mail open all at once, it's like a battle over what get's done with the sound creaking away and the spinning icon all over the place.
How do i check my drive using Disk Utility? Do i 'verify' it? I have done it before but it was a long time ago.
I never did a clean install. I just put in SL and let it update, then i updated the software to 10.6.8.
I will do that when i get the new RAM however just to start afresh.
I have bought a 2GB Crucial RAM memory (Thanks RadiationMac) but do i need to buy another one now?
Also how would spotlight make noise?
Thank you. These forums are invaluable.

This forum is for people to discuss issues with other users. Apple aren't here. No one here can give you your money back. So, contact the the App Store support, if that's where you bought it. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store window.

  • Can you tell me why iPad 2 is not cannot to laptop with snow Leopard it doesn't cannot it

Can you tell me why iPad 2 is not cannot to laptop with snow Leopard it doesn't cannot it

You question is garbled. Are you saying your iPad cannot connect to a laptop with Snow Leopard? Restart your computer. Start iTunes and check for updates. If there are any updates to itunes download and install it. Then restart your computer and start iTunes.
Then reboot your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart.
Finally connect your iPad to your computer. Use a USB on your computer that is not on the keyboard or connected to a hub.
If you do these things and it still doesn't show up in iTunes on your computer report back here and explain clearly just what happened.

  • Why is my OSX lion upgrade slower than my snow leopard?

    Hey Everyone,
    I run a
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
and every since I upgraded from snow leopard to lion. Everything on my computer seems slower. Just very laggy and not in shape like my last operating system....Anyone else having this problem? What can I do, .....Downgrade?
    Thanks in advance

2GB memory is quite low for Lion. i consider 4GB a good amount for users without special memory requirements.
you can see how much memory is free using Activity Monitor. if the number is often small (e.g. less than 10% physical memory), then a memory upgrade would improve your Lion experience.
my needs are sort of high. even with 8 GB i still find myself going out of my way to free memory.

  • Slow wireless with Snow Leopard

I've read many posts on the subject and tried most all the fixes, but nothing works and I need a work around.
    Here is a summary:
Macbook Pro to Time Machine base wireless, through Actiontec GT701 DSL modem. Latest updates and firmware for all. Tested with all firewalls off.
Had no speed problems before Snow Leopard.
Web pages intermittently load very slow. Will work fast for a few minutes, then very slow for a longer periods of time, then repeat.
Direct connect via Ethernet to Time Machine, no speed problem at any time.
On different wireless hot spots including at work, no problem.
Test of DSL speed shows steady high speed performance.
Tried different DNS configurations, no effect. Tried at least 10 other recommended fixes, none worked.
Put in older Linksys WRT54G V5 in place of Time Machine. Same problem.
Same exact problem with my wife's MacBook Pro.
This points to a problem between Snow Leopard and the ActionTec modem. But since it worked just great with Leopard, is there something I can change in the ActionTec or in Snow Leopard to get back the previous performance????
I don't believe buying new hardware is a good trial and error solution, so I'm looking for a configuration solution.
Thank you in advance for you suggestions.

I am posting a solution that worked for me on this issue.
This was similar to an issue I had back with Leopard (10.5) and Entourage. Using Entourage with my Exchange Server, every time an OS update would come up, my connection was unstable and would routinely disconnect for no reason. I found a solution on one of the Mac Boards on the Internet (I do not remember which) that fixed the issue, and that same fix seems to work for this slow WiFi connection problem. This assumes you have the problem with your home WiFi, or the WiFi WAP (Wireless Access Point) you are having connection issues with. In my case I was using an Apple Airport Time Capsule Access Point.
I write these steps in the simplest terms possible to ensure even a novice can understand and follow.
1- Go to you Keychain Access (Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access)
2- Look for the name of your WiFi WAP/Server (It should say AirPort network password next to it)
3- Double Click and then click on Show Password on the Attributes window (May ask you to Authenticate yourself for access to the Password)
4- Write down the WAP Password (it may be case sensitive, so be exact)
    5- Close Attributes window
6- Delete the entry with the name of the WiFi WAP name you selected on Step 2 above.
7- Close Key Chain Access window
8- Turn off your Airport on the menubar at the top of the screen (Airport Symbol -> Turn Airport Off)
9- Open System Preferences (Icon on your Dock) and then Click on the Network Icon
11- Click on the Airport entry and then on the Advanced button
12- Click on the Network Name of the WiFi/WAP you deleted in the Keychain Access (Step 6)
13- Click on the minus sign below the Network Names section (This deletes the WAP entry)
    14- Click OK
    15- Restart your Mac
What these steps do is erase the main entries that automatically connects you to your Airport WAP/Network account.
    After Restart, do the following:
1- Once your Mac has restarted, then turn on your Airport (Airport Symbol -> Turn Airport On)
2- Once the Airport has scanned for available WAP's/Networks click on your chosen WAP/Network (assuming it is your Home WAP)
3- It should ask you for the WAP/Network password (If it automatically connects to your WAP then you did not delete one of the entries listed previously in step 6 and/or 13. You will have to start over.)
4- Input the Password you copied in step 4 above
5- Airport Icon should show that you are connected by going from Grey to Black lines.
    6- You are done...
Once you follow these steps you should be connected to the Internet. You can test your Internet speed at www.speedtest.net
One optional step I do, which may make a difference for you, is that while the MacBook is restarting I disconnect power to the DSL modem for 10-15 seconds, and then re-connect it. This ensures you have a clean and renewed DSL connection with your provider.
One note of caution on this... when I did this fix for my Entourage problem under Leopard (10.5), every time an incremental OS update would come up, I found myself having to repeat these steps over again. It was not until Snow Leopard was installed that this issue completely went away. It seems that a new OS installation fixed whatever gremlin was laying underneath all of this.
This "Fix" did recently work on a 15" MacBook Pro 2009 model (10.6.5) that belongs to a friend of mine, and was experiencing very slow Internet WiFi speeds at his home. I hope it also works for you.
    Good luck....

  • Why is mountain lion so slow compared to snow leopard?

Just installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard (skipped Lion).   I like the features of Mountain Lion but it is incredibly slow in overal start-up and general system responsiveness compared to Snow Leopard.
Running iMac and Macbook Pro and both are the same in really slow performance.

OK, been a busy week but I've installed RAM.
Had iMac 2007 model (iMac7,1) with 2GB of RAM (two 1GB modules).   Upgraded recently to 6GB of RAM (one 2GB and one 4GB module), yes, I know this is above the original specs of 4GB, but this model does indeed support 6GB with Snow Leopard or newer.   This now works fine under Mountain Lion with no spinning multi-colored ball.   With a couple of applications like Safari and Mail open, it has (using Activity Monitor) just under 2GB free memory.   Page Outs are now a very small (close to zero) fraction of Page Ins.   So, it works well.     If you are not upgrading memory then stick to Snow Leopard as it is a much lower memory footprint.
Had Macbook Pro 2008 model (MacBookPro5,1) with 4GB of RAM (two 2GB modules).   This wasn't performing as bad as the iMac with Mountain Lion but was still slow.   Anyway, upgraded to 8GB of RAM (two 4GB modules).   This is also now working fine with no major issues observed.
If running VMWare fusion, then a lot of the memory will be used up.   The free memory is very slim on on an iMac when running VMware Fusion with MS Win XP (ugh!), which I only do for a couple of scientific antenna analysis programs that I like to use that just aren't available on the Mac, but it is workable.  Occasional memory address messages appear from the guest OS but othrwise fine.
So, in summary, if you have older machines (with low RAM) or have a multitude of apps open then Mountain Lion requires careful consideration as it needs just over 4GB when a couple of memory hungry apps open.  Do anything exciting andmemory usage will increase causing tons of Page Ins compared to Page Outs and you'll be running in slow virtual memory.   So, for machines that you won't upgrade in RAM stick to Snow Leopard.   For modern Macs with 8GB, 16GB or more, then all will work well.
I still wish they could make the memory footprint leaner though.

Why is it my iDVD '08 kept on Crashing?

    Hi
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.
    • Delete iDVD pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple’s Disk Utilities application)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK will work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’09 v. 7.0.4, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (does work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    or
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your log-in//Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

Will my November 2006 iMac 24 be compatible with OS X?

Until Apple announces supported models/specs, we don't know.
A good place to start would be whether your iMac is supported to run Mavericks, or how well it does so.  Not saying it's a guarantee, but it might give you a better idea of tthe likelihood (or not)

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
