Why is my 27" IMac so hot on the upper area of the monitor?

Why is my 27-inch desktop iMac 10.6.8 OS Snow Leopard OS running so hot while in use?
My Hardware Overview:
Model Name: 27-inch Desktop iMac, Model Identifier: iMac11,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i3, Processor Speed: 3.2 GHzNumber Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86

How hot is hot? For example is it that hot you can fry an egg or it literally burns your skin? If it's neither of those it's safe to assume the temperature you're sensing is actually warm rather than hot. The area you're referring to is where the hard drive is positioned. This can and sometimes does get warm in normal operation.
If it truly was getting hot to the point where you're in danger of burning your fingers the Mac would switch itself off which is not something you're describing.

My 21" display on iMac (mid 2010) is overheating so much I can't sit at my computer for more than an hour or so. Very hot. Also, some shadowy shapes appear in the background on the upper left of the screen. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
Thanks again!

You can transfer photos outside of iTunes. I do it all the time. THat said, i have a 50/50 success rate with them. I'd avoid sandisk and kingston, their bundled software triggers the 'too much power' warning.
I've had mixed luck with lexar, some work, some don't.
I did have good luck with an older 4 gig geek squad one.
Look for drives without software on them, without bright LED lights and I haven't gotten any larger than 4 gig to work, but that may just be me.
For a less troublesome way? h onestly, I use a SD card that I've formatted with the DCIM folder. I've never had one of them trigger the 'too much power' warning. Just make sure they're not SDXC. those don't work.

Thanks.

Chicky, I have searched my computer for "iPod Photo Cache" and 51 folders pop up, plus 3 files (iPodInfo.plist, Photo Database and Image DB Temp.tmp). How do I know which to delete and which to keep? The Apple website page tackling this issue doesn't go into any detail. Thanks yet again.

• Can anyone tell me why Facebook won't sync to all my contacts in my iPhone 4S. Even when the name are exactly the same as they appear on fb?

I just got my iPhone 4S today and I'm trying to finish getting everything set up how I like it... Unfortunately, I can't figure out why certain contacts won't sync to Facebook even though the names are exactly the same as they appear in Facebook... Help please >_<

Not sure why, but any problem with a 3rd party app is the responsibility of the 3rd party app developer - in this case Facebook.

• Why cannot I resize the Tiles area of the start menu when the Task Bar is anywhere but at the bottom (Left, Right, Top)

I have been using the Taskbar on the LEFT. Even before it came to windows, I used a freeware taskbar written by some dev - if I am not mistaken in Windows 3
This is because it is always easier to move the mouse Left-Right than Up-Down without lifting your hand off the mouse to reset the position, especially now in these times of hires monitors.
The taskbar is by default at the bottom in Win 10. Why? Who knows. I moved it to the left. I found that when the taskbar is at the bottom, I could pop out the startmenu and RESIZE the TILES area.
But in any other position, Left, Top or Right you cannot resize the tile area of the taskbar. You first have to set it to the bottom, resize and then reset it left and if this is the wrong size for you you have to go thru all this over and over.
Since resizing is allowed for the taskbar it should not be restricted to only the bottom setting users.
Bernard

I found that when the taskbar is at the bottom, I could pop out the startmenu and RESIZE the TILES area.
But in any other position, Left, Top or Right you cannot resize the tile area of the taskbar.
I can confirm your finding. It's clearly wrong to have such an
inconsistency. Have you reported it using the reporting facility?

• Why does my 27" iMac running OS 10.6.8 hang on the grey screen at start up?

My 27" iMac, running OS 10.6.8, has started running slowly when loading Apps and when running Safari. Also, when powered, on It has started stopping on the grey screen before the Apple logo displays. To get past this I must turn the Mac off and then back on. Does anyone know what would be causing this behaviour and what I should try for a fix?

It could be a sign of an impending harddrive failure. If you don't backup regularly, I would strongly suggest you start. Don't run ANY anti-virus software as it really messes with your system and if you do regular software updates you'll be fine there.

• TS1574 I have no sound on my iMac. When I select the upper key on the keyboard or select 'output devices' in the System Preferences file, it says "no output devices found". Any ideas as to I can turn on the sound?

I have no sound on my iMac. When I select the sound keys on the upper row of my keyboard or select 'output devices' tab in System Preferences, it says "no output devices found". Any idea where I am not looking to get sound back?

Thank you for your responses. I found the 'sound' icon in the menu bar and found it was turned down low. I adjusted the sound there and this worked; however, I'm not sure why this didn't show in my System Preferences or why I couldn't adjust the sound from the keyboard. Those function keys basically became un-usable for me. Thank you again!

• Why does iTunes allow you to play music files that are in the trash?

I recently was up grading my music library why I got my new mac. I had 2 I tunes libraries on my computer and checked to see which one I was using and deleted the other music folder. While the folder was in the trash I played the music to make sure that I would not have a problem...... then I empted the trash. Problem was that after emptining the trash I could not play the music anymore. so my question is is there a way to set up a preference to not allow I-tune to not allow access to files in the trash.

If an iPod is set to automatically sync from a particular iTunes library, when you connect it to that iTunes library, every song on the iPod exists in the iTunes library. Therefore, if you want to play a song on the iPod using iTunes on the computer, you can just play that song from the computer's iTunes library, and not the iPod.
If an iPod is set to load songs manually (by dragging songs to the iPod in iTunes), then the iPod is NOT syncing to a particular iTunes library. The library on the iPod is separate; songs on the iPod may not be in the computer's iTunes library. Therefore, you can play songs stored on the iPod using iTunes on computer.
If your shuffle happens to be 1st or 2nd gen, they work differently from other iPods. They are always associated with only one iTunes library at a time, so you cannot play songs on the shuffle using iTunes on the computer.
I was wondering how I could transfer music from my iPod to my library
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

• HT1338 Why does my mac desktop screen have black smoke like areas at the top of the screen on both sides?

I have had my IMAC now a little over a year and now all of a sudden there is black smoke like marks on the top of both sides of the screen. Like exactly where the fans are. Is this telling me the fans have caused the screen to do this? I see I am not the only one with this issue. What is going on with these computers? I am begining to think its an APPLE flaw. What a shame for those of us that didnt have an extended warranty plan. Apple I believe this is your issue and it needs to be fixed for everyone. So what am I to do with this now? Makes it very odd too look at and its spreading. What are the soulutions here?

Do you smoke near your computer?
The fans pull in outside air and whatever is lingering in it. The stuff in the air settles on the backside of the dislay glass.
The "fix" is easy. Clean the glass.
Buy two 4 inch suction cups from a hardware store. Unplug the iMac and rest it on its back on a carpet. Apply the suction cups and gently pull up. The glass is held in place by magnets.
Clean the glass and allow it to dry. Hold it with the suction cups and set it back in place. Clean the rings made by the suction cups.

• Why don't still images scale to fit the safe areas of the frame?

Why doesn't Encore offer offer more flexibility for scaling images in slideshows. Yeah, I know it's very cool that it does a scale, but I want everybody who watches my dvd to be able to see ALL of my image. For those who own standard televisions, they won't be able to see the whole image unless I pan and zoom, and even then I have to time the pan correctly.
Programmers, please add a feature so that users have more control over scaling.
Thanks,
Laz!

Said this dozens of times, and will doubtless say it dozens of times more.
There are 2 issues at play here.
1 - Encore is an authoring app, not an editor, and as such it is down to you to prepare your assets correctly.
2 - a standard TV will always crop the images - they overscan. the same image in a progressive scan system will display fully.
So, what you need to do is decide what you need to create your images at, and if you use Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere, then you can use the title safe/Action safe overlays to scale things yourself.
It has to be done this way, as not all TV sets overscan to the same degree - as I just said, Progressive Scan systems and LCD/Plasma screens don't overscan at all.
This is what the safe areas are for.

• I am trying to reinstall winows 7 on my iMac and it will not install. I am using the latest drivers ( v4.0) but I still get the black screen. I have made sure that the auto install and the drivers are at the root level on my USB flash drive.

I am reinstalling W7 on my iMac and keep getting the black screen. I had installed W7 before when using Snow Leapord but W7 doesn't want to install with the latest drivers (v4.0). W7 was working with Lion but I had to uninstall W7 and now I cannot reinstall.

NOTE: Just discovered that Adobe is making a bigger mess than any previously.
They now have a 32-bit uninstaller for Flash '''''AND''''' a separate 64-bit uninstaller for Flash. You will need the 64-bit uninstaller for what you had installed above.

• TS3899 Why do I receive e-mails but not all the mail are indicated, the rest say they have been read when they haven't

My wife & I have an Ipad each, & both of us have the same problem. When we have received our e-mails only certain ones give notice of arrival, & the rest go straight to trash. How can we stop this. I can't find any settings to alter it & this is a problem as most are wanted.Thanks.

What you have there is either a jailbroken unit with some crazy custom UI or an eastern knockoff. Give us some photos of the ipad itself, mainly the back and some experts can help.
If you plug it into iTunes does iTunes even acknowledge that an ipad is connected? If it does then try a restore.
Failing that, head down to an apple store and see what they can do for you.

• Why all the videos are in the same folder

Hi,
Is there a way to put videos in a different folder or they always ended up in the same folder on the Ipod, any help would be ....
thanks
Mike

My 10 step solution
1. Plug in your Ipod and start Itunes.
2. Now in Itunes select your Ipod.
3. Then go to file and click on New Smart Playlist.
4. make sure that Match the following rule is checked.
5. What I did was change artist to album and give it a name such as horror or action then press ok.
6. now when your movies are in the ipod go to your movie and click on file and click on get info.
7. A window opens and click on the info tab and under album write what you wrote for the smart playlist such as action or horror and click OK.
8. it will update your movie depending on file size and length is how long it will take to update.( for me with a dual 2.7 g5 i waited like 3-5 mins for a 2:30 hr movie.
9. Once done it will be in your new folder.
10. Your Done
I hope this helps.
