Why is my 60i video pixelated/choppy when imported into Final Cut Pro X?

I just bought a brand new Nikon D5200 to get into some indie film making. I put together a quick short the night I got it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN8OAprluOI) and filmed in 1080p at 24fps. It turned out great, footage looked great, was ready to test out the 1080 60i they put on it. Again, the footage looked great but only on the camera this time...Every time I go to import it into FCP X it comes up pixelated and choppy but if I'm just watching it in Quicktime its smooth and looks fantastic. Is there anything I can do to get my 60i footage imported into FCP X and stay true to the quality? The codec it's importing on is
h.264 and when it gets into FCP X it switches over to it's true nature of 29.97i so i just don't know what the problem can be!!
HELP PLEASE!!!!
Thanks in advance!

Hey Zach.
How did your progressive footage wind up in an interlaced video? (Who is "they"?)
Typically, one wants to edit as close as possible to what was shot. The cases where progressive needs to be converted to interlaced would typically be where one needed to match delivery requirements in broadcast. The conversion to interlaced is almost certainly going to introduce "issues".

  • Video quality changes when imported into Final Cut Pro

I have video files that I have imported from an external hard drive that were transferred from an HD camera. When viewing the footage directly from the hard drive, the quality is great. Once imported into Final Cut Pro, however, there are small "flares" (don't know how else to describe them) that appear for split seconds across the screen. The best way to describe it is if you are watching a television that has an antenna, there will be static or interferance on the image. This is barely noticable but I can't determine what would cause the decline in quality. My video settings are set to DV NTSC 48 kHz and wonder if this is the problem or if anyone knows of something else that I should change prior to importing.

Thank you so much for your help! I am technically challenged and STRUGGLING to say the least.
Some files are definitely H.264 and I can convert them to ProRes. I also have clips that are
    DVCPRO HD 1080p25, 1,440 x 1,080 (1,888 x 1,062)
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    Current Size: 1,440 × 810 pixels
Will I need to do anything to those as well?
Here is the question I'm afraid to ask because I think I know the answer already. Can I simply replace the clips in my sequence with the newly compressed ProRes files or do I have to change all of the video and sequence settings and then start all over?

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

    Like the title says...
I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists 'iPhoto Library' as GRAY, and will not let me select it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.
I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

  • Why wont my clips import into Final Cut Pro ?

Why wont my clips import into Final Cut Pro ?

FCP doesn't work with 3GPP, which is basically a cellphone compression format. FCP only works with media in the QuickTime framework. It only works with video in standard video frame resolutions, which 800x480 isn't, and with video that uses uncompressed audio, while yours is compressed.
Standard definition video is 720x480 at 29.97fps with uncompressed 48k audio in a production codec, which H.264 isn't; it should be either DV or DV50 or ProRes.

  • Video quality bad when compresed from final cut pro to dvd studio pro. HELP

    Hello,
I have a dvd project im working on and first i tried the video that i captured from final cut to just use in dvd studio pro but that didnt work. then i used the compressor and used the 60min high quality video and that looks even worse. what do u suggest i do?

You must get to know what these settings do to be able to use Compressor. Try using a 10 second test of your video file and encoded at different settings to get a feel for how compression works.
Min 4 and peak at 7, a difference of 3 between min and peak is a good start at CBR, but you must test.
Just like using a video camera, if you use the same exposure setting all the time, most of your pictures will be unuseable, either too dark or too light.

  • How can I get MPEG-2 video into Final Cut Pro X?

Hello!  I have several MPEG-2 video files on which I need to perform some edits.  When I tried to import them into Final Cut Pro, I learned that Final Cut Pro can't import MPEG files.  Okay, so I went into QuickTime and exported one as 720p.  20 minutes later, I had a video that I could load in FCP.  Awesome.  Except that when I watched the video, the audio was waaaaaaaay out of sync.  So, is there a different way I could get this MPEG-2 video into a format that FCP will like while keeping video and audio together?
I would keep trying a few different things without direction, but these videos are like 90 minutes long and the conversion process is lengthy.
    Thanks!

Although I looked up the equipment, I couldn't find what kind of MPEG2. I'm assuming program stream.
I don't know why you had the sync problem with QT. You could bring it into FCP and detach the audio and manually line it up it's off by a constant amount.
Or you can use MEG Streamclip. You will also need the playback component, which is $20. Follow the instructions on the Squared 5 site to install it. Streamclip is worth having even if you don't use it this time around.
    Good luck.

  • Choppy Playback & Export AVCHD Final Cut Pro X

Just bought a Canon XA10. When I import the AVCHD files into Final Cut Pro X and drop them into my timeline, they play back choppy. They also play back choppy after exporting, regardless of file type. Tried optimizing and proxy, didn't make any difference. Also tried converting them to other formats (Prores, MOV, MPG2, MPG4) before importing, still play back choppy. The raw files looks fine on the camcorder and also look and play fine when you open them in Quicktime.
Is there a setting on the camcorder I need to try when recording (60i, PF30, PF24, 24P/MXP, FXP, XP+), or is there another option from within Final Cut to get the files to play back smooth?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities!
If your imported AVCHD clips play smoothly in Quicktime, but not in Final Cut Pro, see this article for some troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Audio lost when importing MPEGs into Final Cut Pro

When I import MPEG files into Final Cut Pro 4.5 the audio disappears. When I play the clips in Quicktime the audio and video are present, after I import only the video is present. I have tried adjusting the sequence presets for MPEG, but that has not helped. Any advice? Thanks!!

  • How do I import video and sound files from a hard drive into Final Cut Pro X?

I just installed the lastest upgrade to Final Cut Pro X.  I have an external hard drive connected to my computer and I want to import video and sound files into Final Cut Pro X- how do I make the transfer?

File>Import Files (Shift-Cmd-I). Select the files, fill out the dialog box that appears as you need.

  • "media server application expectly quit" when submitting from final cut pro

browsing through the list, it seems the problem couldn´t be solved so far.
doing some systematic testing, the following riddle shows up:
... when adding a QT ref movie (or movie) directly to the compressor batch list and submit to the cluster, everything runs fine.
... when exporting from final cut pro:
    menu -> export -> using compressor ...
    submitting in compressor using:
    1) Cluster: this computer: everything keeps running fine.
    2) Cluster: MylovelyCluster ....
the job fails with the message "Failed: HOST [clusternode_name.local] media server application unexpectedly quit"
since there is 5TB + of data to be compressed, copying files to the render nodes is not an option. all data is on a shared xraid, connected via giganet.
Any ideas, any hints appreciated !
    regards,
p.s. Anybody running an XSAN having the same issues?
    G5s, G4s, G3s, macminis, powerbooks   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   xraid

... well, the answer is in other topics.
showstopper explains it patently again and again ...
    thanks from here.
shortly: when submitting from FCP, every node HAS to have FCP installed and MUST have access to the same relative file path (mounted shared volume). If the volume is not present, the render node will open the reconnect media dialogue and waits for user input.

Your work will still be there, you just have to go through Updating your older pre 10.1. stuff to the new Library model way of doing things.
Follow Tom's suggestions to the letter and things should go smoothly.
