Why is my Airport Extreme (A1143) so slow?

This weekend my Airport Extreme crashed and I had to create a new wireless network to get it up and running again. Everything looked okay, but the internet isn't so constant as it was before. Could anyone explain what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

The first thought that comes to mind is that an AirPort router is designed for 3-4 years of home use.......and the Airport Extreme that you have is anywhere from about 6-8 years old depending on when it was purchased......so the AirPort just may be heading downhill.
If you have reset the AirPort back to factory defaults settings and have reconfigured it a few times, and it is still acting up, this pretty much confirms that the power supply inside the AirPort is starting to fail, and the AirPort will need to be replaced in the near future.
It could not hurt to try a few more resets, but I think you will find that they probably will not help much at this point.

Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Have you tried resetting the modem? Power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again.
Also, some ISPs require physically detaching their cable from the modem for it to be fully reset. Literally unscrew it from the modem. Try that, in conjunction with powering it down.
Don't do anything with your Extreme, other than powering it down too, in the event the modem reset does not help. Reconfiguring it may be necessary but this is not justified quite yet.

  • Why is my new Airport Extreme loading sites slower than my old Airport Express

I replaced my 2007 Airport Express with the newest model Airport Extreme yesterday. Speed tests show that my download speeds are 60% higher with the new Extreme.  However, when I load sites in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, they are much slower to load (e.g. 16 seconds to load Netflix)  than before.  Your help would be appreciated.

These can be difficult issues to sort out..
You need to LAN speed test.. ie copy a file from one computer to another on the network.. the second computer should be plugged in by ethernet so it is not going to cause slower speeds.
Then do the speednet test.. also just by ethernet and compare with wireless..
Once you have speed testing.. LAN side and WAN side we can perhaps help you to sort the issue.
We will need as much network info as possible.

  • Airport Extreme on G5 slower than Asus WL-167G

My G5 has been running wireless using Airport Extreme and the small external T-antenna. I am using a Linksys WRT54G router (the dreaded V5 version).
Things have been fine up until now, but things seem to have become much slower with the latest Airport security update (that could be coincidental, but it's as close to putting a time stamp on the situation as I can get).
I have a 6Mbit line, but I'm getting speeds between as slow as 0.77Mbit and 2Mbit.
However, I just used installed my girlfriend's Asus WL-167G wireless USB dongle, and with this I am getting regulard speeds of about 5.5Mbits!
What is going on? Why is the Asus dongle doing twice the job as Airport Extreme? Are there any known problems with the latest Airport update? Any suggestions on how to fix it? Or do I actually have to get an Asus dongle for myself?
    Any way to troubleshoot this?
Signal strength via Aiport Extreme is excellent, so that isn't an issue.
    I'm confused.

It seems the problem went away when I upgraded to 10.4.8. What a strange world we live in.

  • Airport extreme A1143 problem with mountain lion

what airport extreme software version works with mountain lion

I have an A1143 here and it works just fine with AirPort Utility 6.2 in Mountain Lion.
It also works fine with AirPort Utility 5.6, which I have on another Mac here.
All you can really do is try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme to clear out all the old....and possibly conlficting.....settings and try to configure it again.
If you continue to experience problems, I would suspect a less than perfect AirPort Extreme....although I am sure that the seller claimed it was perfect.

  • Airport Extreme external hdd slow after update 7.6.1

    Hi, need help!
Since I updated the Airport Extreme firmware to 7.6.1 the access to my external disk is extremelly slow. Sometimes I can only access it by IP address, it not even appears in the Finder.
In the same day I updated to Airport Utility to 6.0, again, another error. Now I can't see the Airport, only by IP.
Installed the older version of Airport Utility, the 5.6, but nothing changed, it only appears by a few hours if I reset the Airport.
I'm getting crazy, there's no logic in this error.
If I use the Airport Utility from the iPad, everything is fine. In fact, I have to use the iPad if I want to perform a restart or reset the Airport.
If I use the Finder after a reset I can see the disk, but its very slow. If I access the disk by IP its works ok.
The Time Machine uses the external disk from the Airport, the last time took 3 hours to copy 500Mb.
Downgraded the firmware to 7.6, but it stays the same.
Help, don't know what more to do.

I spent several weeks trying to diagnose and repair this problem.  Unfortunately the only fix I have found is to revert my firmware version all the way back to 7.4.2.  I'm not the only one who has had to do this.  If you search the net you will find that this is the standard solution.
As near as I can tell, Apple has abandoned any attempts to fix the major problems the airport extreme has with sharing USB devices.  They sell it as a big feature of the router but it has been very disappointing.  I will soon be purchasing a new non-Apple router because the airport extreme is no longer the only unit with dual antenna and device sharing features.

  • Why does my Airport Extreme

Why do my aiport extreme and express regularly flash yellow even while functioning properly?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and a message will appear to explain why the Airport is whining
It might be something as simple as a notice that an update is available

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station keep appearing as a Shared device?

After installing 10.5 my Airport Extreme Base Station keeps appearing with a Windows PC icon under the SHARED list in the Finder, and I don't have a hard drive attached. Does anyone know why it's appearing, and how I can make it go away?

Even more weird in my case, I have the Airport Extreme show up twice under Shared. One shows an icon of the actual Airport Extreme which is the one that has the hard drive attached and that works fine. The second is named Airport-Extreme and has an icon like its a PC. lol Not sure what's going on here but if you ask me the first one should be there because that makes sense, but I have no idea why the second one is displayed. Must be some sort of bug.

  • Why Isn't Airport Extreme n running "Stealthed"?

I was wondering if anyone can point me to a thread to why, if I am listeing to podcasts correctly, the Airport Extreme n does not run in "stealth mode" but that protection is made for the Mac OS. Any info that can be shed on the matter for me would be much appreciated.

  • New airport extreme network very slow

I just bought the latest AE base station dual band, but am having trouble with the speeds. We have on the network:
1 macbook pro, 1 windows pc, 2 ipads, 1 ipad mini, 1 kindle fire, 2 iphones, 2 ipods (wow we have a lot of products I just realized now that I am writing them all down) a Wii console and 1 mac desktop computer. Oh and I have an airport express in another room set up to extend the netowrk.
Not all of them are on the network simultaneously.
Using the Airport utility (windows version) I have set up the network trying different configurations. Currently I have it set up as:
    Radio mode: automatic
    Radio channel selection: automatic
    wireless security: WPA2 Personal
network options are 5 Ghz is unchecked
    country is US
    multicast rate: low
    transmit power: 100%
WPA Group Key Timeout: 2 hours
    use wide channels is checked
All devices can connect to the net, but speeds are at old dial up levels and that of course was NOT my intention in getting the latest router.
Any advice from those who understand things like multicast rate?

You either have a defective base station, it is not set up properly, or there is some form of Wi-Fi interference that is preventing your new AirPort Extreme from providing a clean signal.
What make & model was the router that you are replacing with the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme?

  • Why is my airport extreme showing up as a PC server in Finder's Shared area

I have just set up the shared function on my Macbook and IMac after installing Leopard. Under the new shared section in the sidebar of the Finder, my IMac shows up on my macbook and my macbook shows up on my IMac which is the way it should work. My question, however, is that in addition my 2 computers I think my airport extreme is also showing up under the shared section as a PC server (basically it shows up as a series of numbers and letters which I think is partly the ethernet number from the back of my extreme and when I click on this number and select Get Info - it says it is a PC server). Should I be worried? Does this mean my network is not secured or is this normal?

Oddly enough, after 5 weeks of the wifi being intermittent our iMac/Macbook are working 95% of the time, despite no fix. I've had to recreate everything through the set up a few times. Otherwise I simply gave up on the usual "follow these 50 steps and everything will be OK' kind of solutions.
The solution is to keep banging on at Apple to get this fixed. Send them complaints directly instead of just these threads.
Ironically (and there really is no greater irony) whilst Leopard has been having a caseload of wireless issues, Apple doesn't fix it but instead..... introduces ... a wireless laptop. Duh. Sometimes you want to kiss them - other times you want to throw pies. This time it's the latter - and basically all it is is that there are not enough people working on this.

  • Win Laptop gets "free" wireless internet, why not my Airport Extreme

I'm an Apple novice so don't scream too loud!
My Toshiba automatically picks up several wireless networks in my house.
I cancelled my DSL because these signals were sufficient.
I was hoping to do the same with my Power Mac G5. I installed an airport extreme card but it doesn't recognize the wireless signal.
Will the airport card only recognize a signal from an airport base station?
Is there something I can change in the settings etc?
What is a base station's range? Would it carry from a neighbor's house?
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 (6/04)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    First, welcome to the discussions.
If you installed the Airport Extreme Card correctly, and connected the Antenna it will be just exactly like your Toshiba. ANY Computer that is equiped with a wireless card will see ANY Network that it is in range of.
The range of the Airport Extreme Base Station is 150ft
Yes it would carry from a neighbors house.
Just in passing so you know. When you pick up a signal from a neighbor, and you use it, it is not legal without written permission from the person paying for the service. This is commonly known as Pirating, if caught it can be a fine as well as jail time.
Wasn't that easy and nobody yelled.

  • Extended Airport Extreme 802.11ac - Slow Wi-Fi

    Hi All..
I have a rather frustrating scenerio here and could do with a few pointers as things arn't going my way
I recently purchased two new AP 802.11ac for my home network, setup as follows: -
    Sky Modem 20Mbps
    IP 192.168.0.1
    DHCP
    Ethernet
Airport Extreme 802.11ac (Downstairs) Version 7.7.1
Static IP 192.168.0.20 - Reserved at Modem
DNS 192.168.0.1 - Not sure if this should point to modem, advice here if possible
    DNS 8.8.8.8
Wirless on, secured by WPA2, also guest network
    Ethernet
Airport Extreme 2010 (Downstairs) Version 7.6.4
Static IP 192.168.0.40 - Reserved at Modem
DNS 192.168.0.1 - Not sure if this should point to modem, advice here if possible
    DNS 8.8.8.8
    Wireless
Airport Extreme 802.11ac (Upstairs) Version 7.7.1
Static IP 192.168.0.30 - Reserved at Modem
DNS 192.168.0.1 - Not sure if this should point to modem, advice here if possible
    DNS 8.8.8.8
Wirless set Extending the above network, secured by WPA2, also guest network
    Ethernet
    iMac 27" 2011 (Upstairs)
Static IP 192.168.0.31 - Reserved at Modem
DNS 192.168.0.1 - Not sure if this should point to modem, advice here if possible
    DNS 8.8.8.8
    Running OSX Server 2.2.1 (169)
So.. I understand there are many many factors here but my issues are that the iMac (Server) downloads at the expeteced rate of 19Mbps, however anything on wirless pulls around 4Mbps at best and file transfer between the iMac and Macbook Pro (Wireless) not really happening.. This is also the case for all other clients connected to the Wireless networks (5GHz, 2.5GHz and Guest).. In fact, guest network has no connection at all...
I don't think that any of my devices has the AC ability if that matters..
Further details from 'Option + Wi-Fi Icon' on Macbook Pro :-
    PHY Mode 802.11m
    Channel 100 (DFS, 5 GHz)
    Security: WPA2 Personal
    RSSI -70
    Transmit Rate: 108
    MCS Index: 11
I appreciate this is probably an odd setup, but any help would be appreciated..

Ok... netspeed just resolved itself across the wirless back up ro 19Mbps..
However, file transfer between the iMac and Wireless Macbook is around 5Mbps only, any ideas?
Any feedback on the dns would also be appreciated though!

  • Why does my airport extreme have 2 of the LAN port on but not the main light after a lightning strike ??!

    pleasee help!!

Unfortunately, this is a symptom that a power surge has damaged the AirPort Extreme. There is likely nothing that can be done other than replacing the device.
If you have an Apple store or authorized servicer in your area, you should take it to them so they can have a look at the device to confirm. As user stinkybumbler mentions, it would be a good idea to have any of your sensitive electronic gear plugged into a high quality surge protection device.

  • Why is my airport extreme signal strength so weak on my macbook pro?

I live in a 4 story brownstone, next to neighbors with lots of wireless routers. My macbook pro (OS X 10.6.8) frequently is dropped from my airport extreme router. The strange thing is, the macbook receives a much stronger connection to my next door neighbor's wireless router (which is behind 2 brick walls, and down 1 floor) than it does to my airport extreme router - located 15 feet to my right with no interfering walls. In fact, I can stay solidly connected to my neighbor's router even when I'm 2 floors above him.
There are 4 other devices in my house connected to my airport extreme router. All have no problems connecting.
An ipad, which moves around from floor to floor, even outside on my front stoop.
A stationary imac located 4 inches away from the router
A stationary brother laser printer, about 10 feet to the right of the router (no interfering walls)
A stationary lexmark inket printer, about 10 feet in front of the router (behind 1 partition wall)
What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Problem solved. My router had some significant interference from a neighbours router that is no longer an issue.
