Why is my airport utility opening automatically?

For some reason my airport utility will open automatically. This has happened twice in the last few weeks. Everything seems fine. Signal is strong, cable modem seems fine. Software/firmware seems to be up to date. Does anyone know what could trigger the utility to open automatically.

It will do that if a device requires some attention, even for a brief moment, such as in the event your Internet service goes down momentarily.
Open AirPort Utility and select Preferences from the AirPort Utility menu. Consider un-checking "Monitor AirPort base stations for problems". That will prevent such nuisance AU openings.

AirPort Utility Opens By Itself EVERYDAY Since Firmware Update

Ever since the AirPort Express firmware update a few days ago, the AirPort Utility opens everyday by itself, usually in the AM and under no specific set of circumstances. It always goes to the same info regarding sharing music and only gives me the option to continue to set up the AirPort automatically. When I quit and then check the settings manually, the music settings seem to be set up just fine.
Anybody else have this problem? Doesn't seem like the firmware update could affect the software on the Mac, but I have no other explanation.

In Airport Utility, check the preference menu item. There is a checkbox to monitor airport devices. If a device reports a problem, Airport Utility will launch automatically. Maybe somehow this option is turned on??

MacBook Pro 15" resets when Airport Utility opens

My 2011 Macbook Pro randomly resets throughout the day.
This seems to be only when on the internet and every time the Airport Utility opens.
I've re-installed the software and switching the WiFi off will allow the computer to start.

Thanks, Tim. I will try your suggestions. I've been tinkering on my own with this problem, and a pattern may be emerging. I was asking myself, why DID I have internet access from the MacBook Pro the other evening and at no other time through a wireless connection since the 10.6 upgrade, save the fleeting moments when AirPort has just been turned on? Well, that seems to be the only time that the MacBook was connected to AirPort FIRST.
So, I turned AirPort off on this computer (the G5 tower that hasn't experienced problems) and toggled off and on AirPort on the problem machine. Internet access has again resumed on the laptop. After several hours of periodic usage, I turned AirPort back on on the G5, and both machines have been functioning well since.
I suspect tomorrow will be a different story, unless I repeat these steps (I don't typically shut down the desktop machine overnight). We'll see.

Please locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. Hard to see.....gray lettering on a white background....so you may likely need a magnifying glass and good lighting to see it.
The model number starts with a "A" followed by four numbers. If you see A1084 or A1088, unfortunately AirPort Utility 6.x in Mavericks OS X (10.9.4) does not support these older models. However, you can still administer these models if you have a Mac.....or can borrow one for a few minutes....using Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

The utility has had less and less useful information .. it might be time to simply find a different utility.

This is very popular.. I do not know of what works well on Mac OS because i have installed 5.6 utility which of course has far more info than the later toy version. Plus using an Asus router which has excellent listing of all the clients.
Sometimes beating yourself up to make apple routers do what you want is easier solved with lateral thinking.

HT4259 Why won't AirPort Utility let me extend my network with AirPort Express?

I have 2 1st Gen AirPort Express stations. I have my original AirPort wired into my modem with an ethernet cable and it works fine. I have my new AirPort plugged, well within range of the network but it doesn't show up in AirPort Utility making it impossible for me to extend the network.
All of the previous forums I've seen say to reset both routers and "set up manually" and select the box that says "allow this network to be extended". When I go to setup there is no option for either of these.
Am I missing something? What am I doing wrong?

You are looking at instructions that apply to Snow Leopard and earlier operating sysems. You are using Lion or Mountain Lion.
Hold in the reset button on the Express that you want to use to extend for 9-10 seconds and release.
Close AirPort Utility if if it open.
As edex67 notes above, click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then tell you that the Express will be configured to "extend" the network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and click Next
AirPort Setup will take a minute to configure things. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
You are done, other than locating the Express approximately half way between your "main" Express and the area that needs more wireless coverage.

Why won't AirPort Utility find my new Airport Extreme Base Station?

I bought a reconditioned 5th Generation Airport Extreme. I'm running it with a MacBook Pro, running Lion OS. I have version 6.0 (600.92) of AirPort Utility. The firmware in the AirPort Extreme was version 7.0 and it updated to 7.1. Then I couldn't get it to update again. Probably have the latest version?
When I first plugged it in, AirPort Utility found it and I was able to configure it with a WiFi private connection and a guest connection. I had a blinking light, but it worked and I was able to use if for a day or two. I wanted to see why the blinking status light would not go out so did some trouble shooting and did a couple of hard resets and started to understand how the various settings work and had it close to where I wanted it, with the status light on steady. Then it stopped finding the base station and reset no longer worked. I noticed that after working with it for a few hours that the case felt warmer than I'd like.
So, I suspect I have a defective AirPort Base Station. The setup paramaters were confusing, after resetting it, it kept asking for the PPPeo name and password. I have no idea what to enter there. I guess the next step is to call AppleCare and arrange for a replacement. A reconditioned one carries the same warranty as a new one. But, now I'm skeptical and wonder if it is worth the $30 I saved (after spending hours trying to get it to work). I may be better off returning this and getting a new one. Any suggestions??

I took the defective AirPort Extreme to the local Apple Store and it was replaced with a new one. It is now working.
I am using it with two 1 GBit Ethernet Switches between it and the DSL Modem. I have it configured as a Bridge. I tried DHMP and it didn't like it, may could have got it working, but it was asking for info that I didn't know how to answer. It seemed to work in DHCP, but the Status Light kept blinking amber. Bridge mode works, but I've lost the Guest Login.
Is there a was to run this in Bridge mode and still have the second login (guest)?

Stop Airport Utility from Automatically Launching

So, i just connected an Airport Extreme in my office and started getting slammed with calls from 50 confused users wondering why a utility was asking them to set up a network.
What port does does the utility scan so I can block it except to my computer or how can I prevent this from happening? Is there setting on the WAP that I can use to turn off whatever signal it sends out? It brought production in my office to a stand-still, just for a minute, but still annoyed the bosses. Or do I literally need to run around to all client machines and un-check all the boxes in their airport utility prefs?

Open AirPort Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
From the AirPort Utility menu bar click AirPort Utility > Preferences
Deselect: Monitor AirPort base stations for problems

Why won't Airport Utility recognize my Airport Express? I'vetried re-booting router, Modem, reset button etc. It was working fine until I was asked to do an update. I got the Airport Express to stream Itunes to external Audioengine 5 speakers. 3 hrs!

I have tried everything for over 3 hrs. I purchase really good Audioengine speakers and an Airport express. Everything was streaming fine via Itunes until I was prompted to do an update yesterday. Now Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express. I tried everyhing. I have an older Mac desktop and simply wanted to stream music to the remote speakers. I tried reet button on the Airport express, re-booted my computer, modem, wireless router. Help!

Be sure you performed the "hard reset" correctly. The following is an excerpt from Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button, and the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule will hard reset.
... but read the entire document to ensure you do it correctly. An Express that has been "hard reset" will create an open network with the name "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = the last few digits of its MAC address. Select that network.
If you do not see the network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu with that name, the "hard reset" did not take effect, which will happen if you do not hold its little reset button depressed long enough. In that case do it again.
Following the "hard reset", reconfigure your Express.

Why won't Airport Utility recognize my functioning Airport Extreme?

I'm trying to recover my Airport Extreme password, Airport Utility's Help, but Utility won't recognize Airport Extreme (which I'm using right now and is functioning properly) or any other wi-fi. I just get the "searching circle" and the notation that Airport Utility doesn't recognize any wi-fi devices. Without that I can't get to the password recovery or other Airport Extreme reset screens. What I'm trying to do is establish a wi-fi concoction between my computer and a Canon camera. The camera recognizes the Extreme base station and correct user name but won't accept any known password, including the one that has always worked. Is there any other way I can find out the existing Airport Extreme password (and/or tell me how to get Airport Utility to recognize my clearly functioning and broadcasting Extreme with a green light on and ten feet away)? On your Mac.....
Click on Settings (gear icon on the dock)
Click on Privacy and Security
Click the Firewall tab
If the Firewall is "On", then click to turn it "Off"
Click Apply if asked and close the windows
Restart the Mac and also restart the AirPort Extreme
Check to see if AirPort Utility can find the AirPort Extreme
If yes, you can open AirPort Utility and navigate to check on the passwords. Once you have done that, you can leave the Firewall off if you want, or turn it back on......which may make the AirPort Extreme disappear again in AirPort Utility.
Another option.....if you have an iPhone or iPad handy....and you have AirPort Utility installed on the iOS device, check to see if the iPhone or iPad can "see" the AirPort Extreme in AirPort Utility.
If it can, tap on the AirPort Extreme
Tap Edit
Tap Advanced
Scroll down and tap on Show Passwords
If you do have an iPhone or iPad, but do not have AirPort Utility installed on the device, go to the home screen and tap on App Store. Then tap on Search and type in AirPort Utility to get the process started to download and install the application on your iPhone or iPad.
If all else fails, you will have to reset the AirPort Extreme using a Hard Reset to restore the original default settings to the AirPort Extreme. To do that, with the AirPort Extreme powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light.....which indicates that the AirPort has been reset and can now be set up again.
There is no guarantee that a Hard Reset and reconfiguration will help, but we are out of other options at this point.
If the AirPort Extreme still remains invisible after the Hard Reset, I suggest that you take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you.....or contact Apple Support directly for advice. The link is just below.

PS3 gets lag spikes that vanish with AirPort Utility open

Having a rather strange issue. My setup includes an Airport Express, a PS3, Apple TV, an iPad and iPhone. I've shut down all other devices to simplify matters. When playing online games on the PS3 after a while I tend to experience in game latency issues. Not 100% of the time but usually after playing for a bit.
What has me puzzled is that opening the Airport Utility on my iPhone caused the problem to disappear for the duration of however long I kept the app open. When I closed the app, the lag came back. I left the app open on my phone for a half hour and had latency free gameplay the entire time.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

Airport Utility opens randomly

At random moments Airport Utility will open without me doing anything. Just now I was watching an episode of Californication on my touch and Airport Utility popped right up.
No network issues either. In fact I'm currently downloading a few podcasts.
Anyone else have this problem?

HT5022 Why won't AirPort Utility v5.6 install on my MacBook Air OS X Lion machine?

I've downloaded the install file several times now, and each install attepmt fails.
I'm trying to configure an old AirPort Express (1st gen) on my new MacBook Air and the AirPort Untility v5.6 won't install on my computer.

5.5.3 will not open in Lion as its not support.
Only airport utility 5.6 and 6.0 and 6.1 and any newer ones thast are to be relased.
Now airport utility 6.0/6.1 is capable of setting up a 1st gen express.

Click on go fromt he menu bar att eh top fo the screen while finder is open adn hold down Option and choose library
Go to peferecnes > and mvoe the following files to the desktop

delete them if it just copies them toteh dektop

Got my parents to buy anAiport Extreme and new iPad. Coudln't get their ancient PC to recognize the airport extreme, even with the airport utility for windows.

Yes, if AirPort Utility is installed on the iPad.
It is likely that the Windows Firewall or the anti-virus application(s) on the PC were blocking the connection attempt from AirPort Utility.
That is the first thing to check if you need to connect from the PC.
