Why is my battery health decreasing so rapidly????

I bought a new one like 3 weeks ago .. it has 10 cycles and the battery health has decreased from 98% to 95% in these last few days .. I usually have it connected to Ac power and discharge it like every 4 days.. thats the 10 cycles .. why would the health decrease this much???

Apple battery or 3rd party battery?  Do you mean the overall charging capacity has dropped from 98% to 95%.  Mine has 15 cycles on it and it charges to 100% and if I leave it plugged in for a few days it will drop to 97% and that's perfectly fine.

  • Why is my battery health decreasing so quickly?

Hello. I just bought my Macbook in January. The battery health is decreasing rather quickly. Yesterday it was at 90% health and today it is at 89% health with 130 cycles. I always calibrate it. What can I do to save my battery's health from decreasing so quickly? Why is it decreasing at this rate?

  • Battery health decreased rapidly after charging problems.

Hy a few weeks ago the health of my mid 2010 MacBook Pro was still 79% which is normal since it has more than 1000 cycles.
    Then following incident happened:
My battery was almost discharged, 30% or so, so I connected it to the AC power. After a while I wanted to see how much it was charged but the indicator in the corner still indicated the same 30% or so, only when I disconnected it it changed to something in the 80% range. I used my computer for a while like that and I noticed that the battery indicator was not chaning. Only when I connected or disconnected the AC power did it update.
I decided to reboot the machine and this solved the problem. I recently noticed however that my battery health now dropped to 63% which seems very much in a short period of time.
I know that normally charger will deliver less current to the battery when it is near 80% in order to prevent overcharging and maintain battery life as much as possible. I wonder however if the drastic decrease could be because of the power management thinking that the battery was only partly charged and thus delivering to much current to an almost full battery? If this is the case do you think that Apple would intervene for the costs of a new battery? I know I would have had to replace it sooner rather than later but this does change a lot I think. My computer is not in warranty anymore and I don't want to pay 49€ for one intervention. There are also no official Apple stores in Belgium and the authorised resellers really don't offer the same service.

    sweex,
since your battery has over 1000 cycles and has 79% of its original full charge capacity remaining, Apple considers your battery “consumed”; they will not intervene for the cost of a new battery. It’s entirely your decision when to replace your battery, but irregular charging results are to be expected for as long as you use your present battery.
If no Apple-authorized service center in Belgium offers the option of changing the battery, then you should let Apple know so that they can find an organization who will do so. I don’t know where you are in Belgium, but this search around Brussels shows seven different Apple-authorized service centers which all claim to service Macs, and the one in Aalst is noted as being a Premium service center.

  • Macbookair battery health problem?

I recently purchased a mid-2011 Air 13' i5 128gb and after 1 week of regular use, the battery health decreased to 95% (iStatPro and Coconut Battery). The battery life is of 5 to 6 hours doing word processing and Safari. The original stat of the bat was 98% and Coconut says that the battery has incredibly 28 weeks of life...
Is it normal? Do i have to concern about?
    Thanks.

    Hi, SP Forsythe,
I finish calibration and the stat is 96% and the current battery capacity rise from 6429 to 6452.
I`m a little bit relaxed about the "problem" after reading this thread that make sense to me.(https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2090860)
that says: "There is no problem. Simply do not give the ±5% to 10% battery health estimate any credence. Ignore it. It will fluctuate up and down, and the fluctuations have no significance whatsoever."
The point is that after spending lot of money in that little thing I don't wanna play with casualties...I'm going to the authorized representative to make a test. I just don't know if I can really trust this guys, after all, it's not good for them to return the product. And the problem looks like not important.
I don't know, let's see whats happen. After all, thanks for the help.

  • Why is my mac's battery life decreased and got slower after upgrading to lion?

    Thank you for helping,
I am using MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) and beginning of this summer I upgraded it from snow leopard to lion (from apple store). After installation my mac got slower,it consumes the battery very rapidly and starting time increased. I searched the reason on the net and this time I did a clean installation. I but the problem insisted. last week i updated to 10.7.5. this time i see that coloured spinning wheel even i logging in. I did all the updates and battery calibration as mentioned in apple support communities but nothing have changed. I don't use any grafic programs etc. I only use safari, firefox, iphoto, iwork and microsoft office for mac. My english and my computer knowledge is not very good. So, if you answer my problem please will you explain as much as simple.
    Thanks anyway.

    A couple of things...
...first, you might want to make certain that your internal drive is selected as the Startup Disk under System Preferences. If it's not, this can sometimes lead to a problem of your MBP 'searching' for a boot drive at startup. Second, you might want to read ds store's article - Why is my computer slow? A very handy reference guide with some good tips.
As to your decrease in battery life - that has been reported by some users as a problem with both Lion and Mountain Lion. See the "More Like This" to the right of this page.
Can't offer any real solutions - read Mr. store's article and see if you can find anything that helps. You might also want to download the free "Battery Health" from the App Store and keep an eye on your battery when you're using it.

  • Battery health descreased rapidly

When I upgraded the firmware on my Macbook, I checked the battery health in iStat and it went from 98% to 93%. Is this a mistake? Did the firmware just give me a more accurate number? I just bought the computer in June, it seems like a rapid decline in the health of the battery.

When did you last calibrate your battery? You may want to calibrate again since you just changed firmware.

  • My MacBook Air's battery health is decreasing.

My Macbook Air's battery health is decreasing. I bought it around a year ago. Now it's battery health is 85%. However, it keeps changing. From 85% to 88% and sometimes it hit 90%. Is my macbook's battery healthy? And is it normal, because I bought it a year ago.
    Here are my battery's properties:
    Cycles     ; 404
    Health     : 85%
    Design Capacity: 6700 mAh
    Current Capacity: 5703 mAh

i have to disagree with linc davis's reply.
system profiler, or what they call the system report will have your current battery health status. in power the system profiler will either display "excellent", "normal" or "check battery" the more charge cycles you have, (404 which you stated) the more the battery will loose some capacity. this is normal of lithium ion batteries
health 85 % is current capactiy (fully charged)  divided by design capacity * 100 or
    5703 / 6700 *100 = 85%
my mac book air, having it for a year states
    cycle count 163
    Condition : Normal
    Charge remaining 4223
    full charge capacity 4263
but system profiler, at least on my mac book air running osx 10.8.2 does not list design capacity. so i am wondering where you got that number. the mac book air i have is the mid 2011 11" model
if you feel after 400 cycles your battery diminished and you have apple care you can always ask them to replace the battery, but if you did not get apple care, then the year warranty would be up. a new mac book air battery outside of apple care or any warranties is $129 before tax at the apple store.
eventually the more cycles you have ( a cycle is being fully charged from being nearly discharged ) the more you are going to have to replace the battery. whenever you feel you are not getting the charge you used to get the discision to repalce that battery is your choice, but eventually you will have to replace it.
for example say the battery used to give you 3 hours amd now it only gives you 30 minutes, then yeah replace the battery. but if the time lost in capacity doesn't bother you that much, then don't replace the battery now

  • Weird decrease in battery health

3 days ago my battery health was at 94% with 103 cycles and today it is at 85% with 106 cycles. I have noticed a slow decrease but 9% with only 3 cycles!...is this normal?

This issue comes up all too often. The basic problem is one of TMI - Too Much Information.
The battery health percentage information is only a semi-intelligent guess. There is no point in agonizing over insignificant variations. I wish Apple would make the information only available to service locations. It does nothing to actually help the average user.

  • After software/firmware UD, battery life decreased significantly+overheating problems

    Specs of my laptop:
    13 inch late 2011
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4gb 1333 MHz DDR3
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Hi, a month or two ago I did a software/firmware update (the thing that automatically pops up once in a while and asks if you want to update). Before the update, I was getting 7-8 hours running safari on a bright level (more than half) which was awesome!
Anyways, after I did the update, my battery life decreased significantly. If my brightness was at half, I got around 2.5 hours MAX. If I ran word and safari it wouldn't even last two hours.
Along with the horrible decrease in battery life, my laptop now gets really hot, really quickly, even if I'm only running safari on a low brightness. Sometimes the fan vibrates becuase it's working so hard...it's NEVER done that before.
I took it into the Apple store 'genius' bar, since I still have the warranty and the person that helped me offered no resolution. He told me that my battery still has life and didn't know why my laptop did this, laughed...and then dismissed me (rude). haha
    system report of the battery:
    Firmware Version:          201
      Hardware Revision:          000a
      Cell Revision:          158
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5281
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5333
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          392
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12457
I'm not sure what any of this means, but the 'genius' told me my battery still had a lot of life.
I just want the battery life back.
Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?
    Thank you

Hi, thanks for your advice. I just tried resetting and it worked momentarily (battery life improved, fan stopped making so much noise) UNTIL I put my computer to sleep and opened it again... when i first reset, battery life said 5:48. The fan was fine until I put it to sleep (closed the lid and opened five minutes later). Now it's heating up again and the fan is going crazy (making that buzzing noise), battery life is at 2:40 on same display brightness (half). I only have safari open....
Is there anything else I can try to do? Not sure why this happens after I put it to sleep. I don't want to have to reset my computer every single time I open it.
    thanks
EDIT: after posting this, not even five minutes later my battery time dropped to 2:07 and is funneling down as I type.

  • Having serious issues with battery health, how could it be?

    hello,
newbie to this forum but not to apple devices.
my big brother gave me his MacBook Air about 2 months ago. he bought it in august of 2009. when i got it, it ran Windows 7 (dont ask me why that what he wanted). i did update to the system and installed snow leopard etc...
after install the iStat pro i noticed that the battery is in good condition, 93%. i thought he ruined the battery cause he always plugs his laptops/netbooks to a power source.
i dont understand why but in the first month i had 90%-92% health, and in the past few weeks it went down to 88%-90% and a few days ago it was 86%. today i went to school and when i opened my mac the battery health os on 84%!
    i really dont understand why.
i follow the instructions and wait until the battery is empty, recharge to 100% and again waiting... etc... there is no overuse and when im home i usually work on my stationary computer.
the computer overall is in great shape, i dont understand the problem maybe one of you guys can help a brother out...
    thanks in advance!!!

    hello,
newbie also to this forum, does anyone can confirm that when the battery gets older, the maximum load percentage will decrease so that 100% capacity will never be reached anymore?
    Tks.

  • Battery Health and ways to bring it up again?

I've had my MacbookPro for a little over two months now and 31 cycles on it. However, I have already lost 7% battery health, leaving me at only 93%. I'm pretty sure that this is not good, and that the loss shouldn't be this rapid.
I'm sure it has something to do with the way I use the computer. I leave it on quite often, which I know isn't a good thing, but had no idea that it would drain the battery like this. In some cases the computer is on for days at a time. I've gotten into a routine where each morning I turn it off for the bus ride to school, where I use it throughout the day. The night before it remains on so that I can quickly check things in the morning.
I currently use my MacbookPro as a semi-desktop. I have it hooked up to an external monitor, and use a wireless mighty mouse and wired keyboard, which is primarily the reason it's on for such long stretches.
Now that you have some background as to what I do with the computer I'd like to know if there is any way to replenish the battery health, or if that 7% is lost for good.
I've read up on this calibrating of the battery business, and I'm going to try it this weekend (can't during the week because I need it fully charged for school each day).
What exactly does this do? Does it actually replenish the battery health or just determine it's actual current percentage?
I'm using the widget iStat Pro as my monitor of battery health.
If any other information is required, I'd be happy to provide it.
    Thank you.

use the battery frequently and lightly for best longevity. Apple states "An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge."

    Courcoul:
Full Charge Capacity (which is what the specific battery clocked at the factory when first tested).
Just a minor correction, but can be significant. Full charge capacity is not "what the specific battery clocked at the factory", it's a nominal value, i.e. a general property of the battery type, not that specific battery. Specific batteries have a range of full charge capacities (when new). In fact, it's not even measured, it's calculated - for the 15", it's a 60 Watt-hour battery (from the specs), and it runs at 10.8 V (printed right on the battery). Thus, with a basic formula (W = V x A), an algebraic rearrangement, and some simple math, 60 Wh / 10.8 V = 5.555 Ah = 5555 mAh (~5500 mAh, which iStat uses as the denominator for "health", although I have read that under Leopard iStat uses 5600 mAh, just a rounding difference). My 17" with a 68 Wh battery calculates to 6296 mAh, ~6300 mAh - my replacement battery actually started with ~6800 mAh in System Profiler.
    Just FYI...

  • Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal?

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future
Please contact me or answer the question if you know anything about this!

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles.

  • My battery health went from 88% to 77% in less than ONE DAY!!!

Sorry -- we can't fix your battery by remote control. Take it to an Apple Store or AASP for a checkup and testing.

  • New MacBook Pro 2012 with battery health at 92%

    Hi everyone!
Few weeks ago I bought brand new MacBook Pro (2012, 13"). After 12 cycles the battery health significantly decreased to 92%. Quite unexpected, isn't? Could you advise me what can be a problem? AC adapter, socket in my wall or something else?
To answer your questions, I did not put the battery below 10% during this time.
Thanks in advance for any hints!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
