Why is my brand new iMac 27' display dark?

I just bought a brand new iMac and this is what the screen looks like:
at full brightness:
http://uploadphotos.co/images/17459272055549859163.jpg
At lowest brightness the glitch is not even visible:
http://uploadphotos.co/images/91589219794648838918.jpg
I've taken screenshots and the darkening/glitch doesn't appear in the screenshots so it must be the display itself.
It's the brand new 3.4 ghz intel core i7...
Is there a firmware update or something for this?
Ie, is it a known issue or do I just have a deffective display?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be that if you call Apple Customer Support, the Tech may be able to give you a "fix" over the phone or at least help you diagnose the problem.  If you have to ship it back, try to arrange with Apple to have a delivery service (i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.) pick up the computer at your home with insured shipping both ways.
Try to work with the Apple Customer Support.

  • Why is my brand new iMac so slow?

    Hi,
I bought my iMac about four months ago. Never had a Mac before and I'd been looking foreward to it
    for a long time!
    Specs: iMac 27" | OS X 10.6.8 | quad core | 2.7GHz | 4 gig ram | 1 TB disk | 1333 MHz | DDR3
Very early it striked me how slow this machine was! Starting and rebooting is insanely quick, but
that's about it! I work in Photoshop, and it is just horrible. It crashes all the time! I am used to work
with several layers, I can't do that here. Because it's sooo slow...
I also work in a 3D program called ArchiCad and this is even worse! I've had to teach myself a
slower workflow to prevent it from crashing. I hate it...
If both Photoshop and ArchiCad is open at the same time, the Mac crashes VERY fast. I have to force quit app's
and reboot the Mac often. Sometimes several times in one day.
I see this little circus wheel all the time and it's driving me nuts!
Sometimes the Mac just crashes without having lots of apps open. I might have a couple of browsers open,
a word document, finder and a priview. And it crashes!
And I have to do the eternal job of force quitting and trying to tell the Mac to reboot. This often takes a while.
The Mac is full of small problems also.
    - I have to install the magic mouse all the time! It just gets lost and I have to use my track pad
to search for it. Even though the batteries are new. Sometimes this only happends once every
second week, sometimes it happens 15 times a' day.
    - Sometimes I can flip between pages in web browsers by swiping with the mouse, sometimes I can't.
Sometimes I can do this when working with folders, sometimes I can't.
    - I often have problems with Java.
    - The web browser Opera crashes all the time. Can't use it.
    - Sometimes, videos from f.eks youtube can't play.
    - Just opening a photo in preview can take 10 seconds! Not allways, but sometimes.
    - Using cover flow with images is useless. It uses so much time to preview the photos with good quality.
You might wonder, what have this dude done to his Mac?
I have installed Photoshop, ArchiCad, Chrome, Opera and a small app for browsing an old iPod touch.
    That's it!
Since I'm a photographer I've also put a lot of photos here, but not more than perfaps 100GB. Max!
I am very, very carefull with what kind of websites I visit. I never visit a website I don't trust.
I don't download anything (movies, games etc). Everything I have is original. No pirate.
So I brought it wth me to my local apple store. They thought it was a problem with the disc.
After being without the Mac for a week they told me nothing was wrong with it. It was perfect they said!
My jaw dropped all the way to the floor.
All they could say was that I could format and reinstall the intire system and/or upgrade to 8BG ram.
Do you guys think this will help? Why should I reinstall? I can't understand how I could've screeved the system up!
And really? I should use MORE money and upgrade to 8gb Ram? My previous 2gb Ram PC was so much faster! Is this necessary?
I hope someone can give me any advice.
I feel lost. This is by far the worst purchase I've ever done. I hate my Mac...

    Well,
To start Dan, you are using quite a few CPU, GPU, RAM and HD intensive apps.
4 GBs of RAM isn,t going to cut it. 8 GBs isn't going to cut it! Not at all! 4 GBs Of RAM is the base (read minimal ) RAM the iMac model you bought comes with. It doesn't mean it's enough to run lots of Applications. Epecially processor intense applications you're trying to run!
Every re-iteration of OS X uses more and more CPU, GPU, RAM and HD resources.
OS X, BY ITSELF, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM just to do its things smoothly.
Using Photoshop alone needs oodles of CPU, GPU, RAM and HD space for scratch disks.
If you are a seasoned Photoshop/Adobe user, you should already know this fact!
ArchiCad is another, CPU, GPU and RAM heavy app.
You have various browsers, email, word documents open simultaneously? Really?
More than one web browser open? Web Browsers also eat up lots CPU and GPU cycles and RAM!
The thing that eats up CPU, GPU and RAM cycles with web browsers is Adobe Flash and to some extent Java.
You're trying to run all these thing on very little to no RAM horsepower!!!
You're asking your iMac to run all these heavy processing apps with no additonal RAM available to do so.
As you've discovered, this is not working.
You're probably getting a lot of page in/outs and virtual memory swapping between real RAM and the hard drive.
You need to install, AT THE VERY LEAST, 12 GBs of RAM! I would just install 16 GBs of RAM and be done.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM, but this, I think maybe overkill. Try your system with 16 GBs first.
I have a 2009 27 inch iMac with 16 GBs of RAM running CAD and Adobe CS 3 and Blender 3D and other processor intensive apps with very little issues.
Buy reliable RAM from online sellers Crucial memory or OWC.
As wise advice from me, if you want to experience a smooth and productive Mac experience, do not upgrade your iMac to 10.7 or 10.8.
10.6.8 Snow Leopard is the last "real" version of the previous Mac OS X versions that many of us still love and use. Newer versions of the OS, basically, still have many issues and turn your iMac into a giant iPod, iPHone or iPad., Instead  of being a fully customizable and reliable OS.
The magic mouse is really a crppy mouse to use with drawing and painting applications like we both use.
Ditch it and purchase either the old RF style Mac compatible wireless laser mice or purchase a wired mouse.
These mice are more accurate pointing and tracking devices.
Look at Mac compatible mice models from Microsoft, Logitech, Kensington or Apple
The battery life of the magic mouse is just poor, also.  Its tracking is poor for fine mouse movements, too!
Does your wireless trackpad work any better? Is it better on baterries? Do you get fine control using it?
If the trackpad is better, than just ditch the magic mouse all together.
If the trackpad give you trouble, too, ditch it for a more accurate mouse, trackball or trackpad from another manufacturer other than Apple. Again, Mac compatible trackpads from Microsoft, Logitech and Kensington.

  • Why does my brand new imac keep freezing up?

I may only have several applications open and the computer will freeze up.  I can use the mouse and move it, but not click on anything.

    Wow,
I wonder why it is that when someone wants a real answer and experiences from users as to why an Apple product doesn't work, there is usually an iCult member who somes to the defense of Apple as if being a disciple of God :-) That's not a slander. It's meant to be part truth, part humor.
Brody, your other answers are great and what I was wanting to hear about.  However, I can see you get too defensive about your favorite company.
I'm not looking for a lecture on why Apple is so wonderful.  I sincerely want to know the things I should look out about when buying an iMac and to hear solutions to problems form users with issues.  I would not be so hesitate about buying an iMac if it weren't for my current issues with iTunes freezing and crashing on multiple computers, an iPhone4 that doesn't work in speakerphone mode, and an iPad coming dead on arrival (rare I understand).  I've been an electronics system designer for more decades than you might think, so I am not dumb about equipment.
Now before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am not a proponent of Windows or any other specific competitive company.  Every product has its issues and advantages.  But let's get the fact right.  Apple is not the most valuable computer company on earth because of the "machines".  If they were, then they would own that market.  They don't.  They got to be so successful because of the nice selection and decent design of many various products and services (and at a high price too).  Apple does some really clever things, but also some dumb things as well.  I'm looking to avoid the dumb things.

  • Why is my brand new iMac locking up?

My i7 2.93 iMac with 16gb RAM keeps freezing while I'm using ableton. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything from software to drivers to the OS and NOTHING seems to work. I'm thinking it might be overheating?
i submitted crash logs to ableton tech support and they say that ableton is not crashing and that it looks like nothing is wrong with my software. i even tried using the beta version and old versions to try and isolate the problem. no luck.
    any advice?

There are several threads on here where people have experienced problems when running with 16gb RAM (here's one: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2473276?start=0&tstart=0 )
Although it mostly concerns random shutdowns I have also seen seen others reporting lockups. It seems a quick solution - just to see if it is a RAM problem - is to drop down to 12gb RAM. If it then runs OK I'd see if you can replace all the RAM to one of the few that are recommended - Samsung RAM, from memory (no pun intended ), seems to be problem free, and I believe there are others.
iMacs seem to be very particular about what make of RAM is installed.

  • Why does my brand new imac 's fan run consistently when I run parallels?

  • Brand new iMac kills home network

I have a home wi-fi network with a BT Voyager 2100 router and several PCs and laptops. All works fine. So today - I power up my brand new iMac and the home network stops. IE and Firefox on the PCs give "unable to find xxxx" error messages. I have tried the iMac with both wireless and ethernet connections to my router - same result. Safari on the iMac simply does nothing, blank screen. To get my internet back I have to power off the iMac and then re-start the router several times. Eventually all is well again. How do I get my iMac to work with a BT Voyager 2100 router?

update to my post - an old iMac G4 works just fine. So I guess that basic connectivity between iMac technology and my router is OK... so why does a brand new iMac give problems ?

  • Why does MS Word 14.2.3 run so slow on MacBook Pro and brand new iMac?

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, MS Word runs very slowly on both my 2007 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and a brand new iMac with 16GB RAM.
I have trimmed fonts  in the systems and removed font conflicts and duplicates.
Keyboard entries are delayed by seconds and typing a document becomes a nightmare.
    Any suggestions?
I have repaired permissions and verified both disks.
Also run Cocktail to clean out junk files. Still no luck.

Word is up to version 14.3.1. Try updating and see if that helps. The newest version may be more ML friendly. I certainly have no complaints about the speed of MS Word.
p.s. Just checked for updates - there is now a 14.3.2 version.

  • Why can't I open iTunes on brand new iMac?

My wife has a brand new iMac running OS X Lion. She already has an iTunes account which she accesses on a year old iPad. She can not access her itunes library or even get the page to open on her iMac. Going to Finder - Applications, shows iTunes as one of her apps but it will not open. The iTunes icon is on her task bar but all it does is bounce when clicked on. The bar at the top of the window has switched to itunes ( showing controls- File, View, Edit etc) but no page opens.  We are both newbies, are we missing something obvious?

Since it's brand new I'd call AppleCare and let them walk you through it. They will have you try things and you can give immediate feedback and they will take you to the next step. That would take us too long here. Apple's service is very good.

  • Why does it take a really, really, really long time to download updates on my brand new iMac?

    Brand new iMac.

It depends on our internet connection...
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
If your download speed is less than 15Mbps, you may want to contact your ISP to discuss upgrades.
Re:  your new iMac, running v10.8.4 Mountain Lion
If at some point you need to repair the startup disk, or reinstall OS X, Apple recommends a broadband high speed internet connection for accessing About OS X Recovery
Macs no longer come with install discs so it's important to have a high speed connection to access OS X Recovery.
Try updating one app at a time.

  • Brand New iMac freezes when external display connected

I'm having an issue where when I plug my Apple VGA adapter to my brand new iMac, it completely freezes. As soon as I unplug the adapter, it unfreezes. Also, if I plug in the adapter without the vga adapter, it does not freeze until I plug a vga cable into the adapter. Can anyone help me with this one?

Turns out that the solution is patience. After allowing the iMac to sit frozen for some time, it eventually starts working.

  • Video converters from app store and online making my brand new iMac crash continuously, why?

I have downloaded various video converters from the app store and online and it seems that no matter which one I use they all make my brand new iMac (I've had it less than 2 weeks) crash. I've wiped the disk once and reinstalled mountain lion twice as directed when I rang apple and I'm still encountering the same problem.
I would really like to find a way to fix this problem without having my mac sent away for repairs.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or know how I could fix it?

  • Slow performance, brand new iMac!

    Hello!
First, excuse my rusty English.. I hope you manage to read it
Main problem.. Adobe, PhaseOne and other intensive applications is veeeery slow on a high specced brand new iMac! Lightroom 5, PS CC and Capture One Pro 7 is what I use mostly.
I just got my brand new iMac 2014.2 (3.5/3.9 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512GB flash disk and GTX780M), and its quite a lot slower than my other Win7 workstation. Other workstation specs: i7 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX 580. I'm working on the same Raid-5 drive (USB-3) too, so I don't know why it's slower..
    What I experience:
Changing from "current" raw to next raw (while culling) takes several seconds, and my Raid-5 is done chewing long before I see the result on my monitor. I get the spinning beach ball while waiting for preview. I always render 1:1 on import and 1:1+standard size in menu, just to be sure. Adjustment brush is like dodging in PS v1.0 (NOT CS) when computers had less disk-space than we have cpu-cache today, awfully slow, and it "stutters". Moving/panning in 1:1 is very choppy, and sometimes I get the spinning beach ball while panning.. This happens in LR and CO.. Photoshop CC stutters or have to "think" when I try panning. These problems happens in 6 Mpix, 12 Mpix or 25 Mpix RAW files, and actually in some JPEGs too!
    I have done following:
I've tried 2003 and 2010 processing in LR, small change. Fixed permissions in OS X. Removed preferences for LR, CO and PS CC. Reinstalled LR/cloud apps and Capture One Pro 7. Increased camera raw cache from 15 to 50 GB. Followed Adobe's guide to make LR faster. Followed Capture One guides. Reinstalled (clean install) of OS X. I've tried all tips I could find in the forums around.. I have also tried placing RAW files on internal 512 GB disk to see if that helps on performance, but no change. Same story with camera raw cache, doesn't matter where it is.
Additional things.. I’ve also diagnosed the iMac with checkdisk, memcheck, logs, etc.. No problems as far as I can see.
I just changed my workflow from Win to OS X and I depend on this to work.. I currently have 4000 files from my last job waiting to be worked on, and I'm not finished until Christmas in this tempo :-(
If I can't get this working very soon, then I have to return this very expensive iMac and buy a new PC again..

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Please HELP!!  Brand New iMac- Won't turn on!!!!!

    Someone please help!!
I JUST purchased a brand new iMac today, no more than 4 hours ago! I brought it home and followed the set up instructions and pressed the "power" button.
The fan comes on- it sounds weak to me, then it slows down, the little white light at the botton right hand side comes on, but the screen remains BLACK!!! Nothing comes on my screen!!
I am NEW to Apple, so I am CLUELESS as to why this is happening or what is going on- not to mention EXTREMELY AGGRAVATED that I cannot find any tech support AT ALL- not on the phone, not on chat, not anywhere!!! I have waited almost 2 yrs to purchase a new computer- I chose an iMac, and this is the crap I get.
    Please help!!!!
    iMac 17inch   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   New

    Dawn,
Having suffered my share of 'difficult' products, I can understand your frustration. This is compounded by the financial restraint you exhibited for 2 years of saving. Your experience should not just be good, it should be exceptional.
There may be something wrong with your machine. The white light is on when the machine is booting or the display is sleeping. The light will softly flash on and off while the machine is sleeping.
The fan should be as quiet as possible, to the point of being a low rumble/whisper or not even heard. It sounds like your computer is stuck in a startup mode.
Calling Apple will get this issue resolved to your satisfaction in a timely manner. If you state the issues they should be more than helpful. You can try a few things for now.
Press and hold the power button on your machine for a while and see if it reboots.
If you look on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303124
You will notice the instructions for zapping the pram (keys held down when you press the power button and held continuously) : Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps (release)
Try that next. Your machine should be restarting when you toggle the power button.
Another quick thing you may want to try is shutting down the machine, unplugging everything (every cable including the power cable), waiting about 2 minutes, then plugging in just the keyboard and mouse and starting the machine with the power button.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion?  I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks.  I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac.  It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks.  Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load.  The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes.  If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem.  I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze.  Then I got the yellow  triangle telling me there was a connection problem.  My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live.  I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi.  I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT!  I really want to return to Lion.  HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
    1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
    2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc?  Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem.  finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.
