Why is my Canon 600d taking really dark photos?

I'm using a Canon 600d with a EFS 18-55mm lens. I'm in the M setting on the dial with the shutter speed at 1/125 and f/5.6 and the phots are coming out really dark even though the room is bright. Please help?

Actually... I WOULD buy the Bryan Peterson "Understanding Exposure" book... probably one of the most recommended books for those who want to learn to take control of their DSLR and learn to shoot on manual.  The Scott Kelby Digital Photography series of books is also commonly recommended (I think that's up to 4 volumes now) -- but I think the Bryan Peterson book is probably more popular.  These books use common language and wont confuse you with technical terms with a presumption that you know all the terminology... they teach you the terminology, but the books are designed for those just starting out.
The ultimate goal is to understand how to determine when you have the right exposure... if you can shoot in manual you can shoot in any mode.  With that said... I do actually use ALL the modes on my camera -- not just manual.  There are reasons the other modes exist.
As for videos... this one should hopefully be a good primer to understand exposure and how you can trade off one part of the exposure setting, but make up for it by balancing out another part of the exposure setting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-NhJua5NFA
BTW, you'll learn about "equivalent exposures" -- but they're not really equivalent.  When you trade one setting for another, you get nuances... some exposures are better for freezing action.  Some better for creating selective focus (focus only on your intended subject with everything else deliberately blurred).  Some are better for landscapes where everything is in focus.  Some are better for keeping noise minimized in low light shooting.  Some are better for "blurring" moving parts of the shot to imply motion.  The list goes on and on -- the point is, picking the right exposure combination is a creative process.
I do NOT normally suggest you crank up the ISO as a way to improve the light becasue the camera will increase the amount of "noise" in the image.  The image will start to look grainy.  If you shoot JPEG then the camera will attempt to reduce the noise via software smoothing processes... but this has the side effect of softening the image (focus will not look as sharp.)
This is why it's a good idea to read a good book or watch a few good videos to make sure you understand it.  It's actually not very hard, but may take some practice to get it to really sink in.  I find that even after explaining it to people, they don't "really" get it until they do a few exercises/experiments of their own -- and then the light bulb comes on and you "get it".

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Which Speedlite for my Canon 600d I am new to Photography

Which Speedlite for my Canon 600d
    I am new to Photography
    I am choosing between
    a) Bower SDF680C Digital Flash for Canon SLR Cameras, Guide Number 139
    http://www.adorama.com/BOWSFD680C.html
    or
    b) Bower SFD926C Dedicated Digital Flash for Canon SLR Cameras, Guide Number 125
    http://www.adorama.com/BOWSFD926C.html
    I want a Wireless Speedlite,
btw how does these Speedlites do the Wireless Connection with the 600d if they can ?
Does both use Slave Function, does both have Wireless Channel Selection.
Does My camera the 600d have Wireless Channel Selection by Radio Signal I know my camera has Slave Function Pls Help pls

    1) My Canon 600d has a Slave Function and it does Not have any Radio signal or Infrared Wireless Connection between an External Speedlite ?
Correct, though I'm not sure it's called a slave function?  The 600D can use it's flash to trigger speedlights that are off camera, and set in slave mode.  But it has no Radio or IR signal.
The IR is something that is on speedlights.  As mentioned above, it's really just red light.  But it's used for focus, not for triggering flashes.
    2) is the E-TTL just like the Operating system or Firmware of the 600D Flash System ?
TTL is an automated flash function, and it will be a function on a speedlight, not a camera (though you're cameras flash does have eTTL).  It lets the flash/camera decide how much flash power it needs.  In a nutshell, it fires a flash before opening the shutter so it can measure how much light it needs, then fires a second time with the shutter open to expose the scene.  It all happens very fast, you can barely see it.
Flashes will either come in manual only, or offer TTL in addition to manual.  Manual is just that, you choose the power level, and it fires during your shot.
eTTL is Canon's version of TTL.
    3) Does the 600d have a Wireless E-TTL or something like that ?
As mentioned above, the 600D can use its on-camera flash to trigger other flashes, and yes, it can do it in eTTL.
The down side to this is that the flashes have to be in the line of sight of the camera's flash (more or less).  [And it uses up your camera battery for the flash]  When you want to place flashes in modifiers or behind people, or screens or in a completely different room, it doesn't work so well.  So people use Radio Frequency transmitters to trigger the flashes.  It used to be an expensive thing to have, but now it can be done quite cheap, and quite reliable.
So the Only option I have for my 600d wireless connection to a Flash is
    a) Slave Function.
    b) I buy a Wireless Transmitter and receiver
Pretty much.  You could also get a long cord to get it off camera, but it's really not a great option.

  • Hi I have CS5 and a canon 600D. Photoshop won't convert the files

Hi I have CS5 and a canon 600D. When I shoot in RAW photoshop won't read my files unless I convert them through DNG converter. This is time consuming and takes up a lot of space and I was wondering if there is a shortcut to converting the files. Also I have just become a full time student studying photography. I would like to purchase a student package so that i can use CC which is the same programme a at university. Which is the best and cheapest way to do this? I know that we are being offered a package in November, but I need to upgrade sooner really.

    Hi Frankiestone,
I would advice you to purchase the Photography plan which consists of both Lightroom and Photoshop.
Please refer to below link for pricing
    https://creative.adobe.com/plans
When you have the latest version of the products you will have access to camera raw version 8.6 and you would be easily able to import the RAW files from Cannon 600D with converting them.
    Thanks

"On the other hand : the fact that OSX / iSync can't find available services on my SLVR over Bluetooth is clearly a problem caused by Apple...
...my SLVR complies with (all) Bluetooth-communications-standards, since it can sync with Windows PCs and swap files with other Bluetooth devices (non-Motorola GSMs for insatance) flawlessly...
You are totally wrong... the fact it works with Windows does not mean that it's not Motorola's fault. In facts, if you think correctly:
    - Mac OS X has no such problems with all other bluetooth devices/phones
Motorola only did check that his phone worked in Windows (if not, they wouldn't have released it). This means that Windows seems tolerant to whatever bug the Motorola phone has. This is quite typical... lots of other devices have hard bugs that were never discovered by their manufacturer because their only test bed is one peer: Windows, which has bugs too.
This does not mean that Apple can't do anything: Apple will have to understand what the bug is and why Windows does not trigger the bug then try to workaround it. Apple already does that kind of stuff in its system. This is a good short term policy (to make the user happy) but a pretty bad one long term as that means that Apple has to put lots of "hacks" throughout the system to "mimic" Windows bugs.
You should complain to Motorola not having a more robust testing process.

  • REALLY Dark prints on HP B9180

Whenever I print an image from Aperture to my HP Photosmart Pro B9180 the image appears really really dark. Even turning the exposure up (so the image is pretty much all white) results in a black print. Currently, when I print an image I need to export a jpg to my desktop, open it in Photoshop CS3, and print from that. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I still don't understand why Apple can't allow this in the Aperture print dialogue box - all it would need is like in Photoshop - an option to allow the printer to manage the colour.
Technically, PostScript does not support the ICC file format. PostScript has its own file format for colour matching, Color Space Arrays for device to CIE and Color Rendering Dictionaries for CIE to device.
Therefore, Apple ColorSync has the ability to do one of two things,
    - keep the ICC file format for the colour matching tables and convert the colourants in the operating system, or
    - convert the ICC file format for the colour matching into the PostScript file format and convert the colourants in the computer that runs the PostScript interpreter.
These commands are part of Apple ColorSync. They appear in the system as part of the printing path, File > Print > from Copies & Pages scroll down to ColorSync > Color Conversion: Standard (meaning in the system) and In Printer (meaning in the PostScript interpreter.
Adobe Photoshop has similar commands. If you choose PostScript Color Management, you are converting the ICC file format for colour matching into the PostScript file format for colour matching, and sending the PS file format plus colourants to the RIP for conversion.
The PostScript file format for colour matching was developed for PostScript language level 2, published in December 1990 in PostScript Language Reference Manual, Second Edition, and provided in October 1992 as product to Adobe OEM partners.
In 1991, Microsoft told Seybold Publications that TrueImage would not be compatible with Adobe PostScript language level 2 because PSL2 "does not support the screen." This is correct in the sense that a Color Rendering Dictionary is CIE to device data only.
A Color Rendering Dictiory is not invertible, that is, it does not support CIE to device data and device data to CIE. Therefore, unlike an ICC type PRTR Printer profile a PostScript CRD cannot support simuluation on the screen, cannot be embedded as OutputIntent in PDF/X-3, and so forth.
David Hayward on the ColorSync team described how this is fixed in the ICC architecture in 1995 when the ICC Specification was finalised for release at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf.
"There is much that an application can do with ColorSync that will help the user work with color. For starters, an application could do the following: Include a print preview mode that shows a "soft proof" of the matched output on the display. The application accomplishes this by building a color world with CWConcatColorWorld that matches through three profiles: from the source profile (which is embedded in the document) to the printer's profile (which you allow the user to pick from a list of installed printer profiles) and back to the screen profile (which is the current system profile)."
