Why is my iMac freezing up on return from sleep; also losing bluetooth with mouse and keyboard and also freezing up in Safari....this after installing latest Lion upgrade...never happened in a year before?

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:

I had a similar problem after upgrading to Windows 7. The problem seemed to be that there was a dialog box that opened
that was not visible on the screen and it was blocking the print completion. Try this. Open the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences and clear the field "Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts." When I did that it solved my problem.
The unseen dialog box seems to be the fault of Windows 7, in my opinion. -
MacBook Pro freezes when returning from sleep
I recently started using a Kensington Bluetooth mouse with my MacBook Pro and the computer freezes whenever I return the computer from sleep. Nothing happens when I press Command-Option-Esc. The mouse pointer moves on the screen and the dock magnification works, but I'm not able to open any programs.
I've confirmed that it has something to do with Bluetooth because I now turn off Bluetooth before returning it to sleep and it works fine. I just have to turn on Bluetooth using the trackpad and then I can use the mouse again. I'm thinking that this shouldn't be a requirement though.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do to resolve?

If I turn off the option to allow Bluetooth devices to wake the computer from sleep, my computer doesn't freeze when I return from sleep. This is a better option for me than turning off Bluetooth before I put the computer to sleep.

FireWire drive unmounting/disapering when computer returns from sleep
I have a problem since the latest software update 10.4.10
that my WD 500GB FW800 drive keeps unmounting/disapearing after
the computer returns from sleep, and subsequently issuing a unclean unmount message!
Toggling the drive power restores it and so far no data is lost... I hope..Well, yesterday I decided to do some troubleshooting to confirm the source of the problem. I connected a different external hard drive using the same USB2 cable that I was using with the problematic WD Mybook. I performed flawlessly and showed no issues with not being accessable after the computer woke from sleep. Next I connected the same drive via Firewire 400. Also no issues. That seemed to confirm that there was a problem with the WD drive! However, just to be sure, I reconected the WD Mybook with the original USB cable and gave it another whirl. It has also been performing flawlessly for the past day!
Possibilities:
1 There was minor oxidation on the contacts of the cable or in the drive socket which gave a poor connection resulting in the problem. Removing and replacing the cable several times removed the oxide and restored proper electrical contact and drive operation.
2 Something in the WD Mybook firmware "reset" when it was unpowered for a few hours, also restoring proper operation. WD's website states that the Mybooks are able to remain in standby mode for long periods of time but that they recommend they be powered down when not in use.
It would be interesting to see if anyone else can confirm that their Mybooks begin to operate properly after "giving them an unpowered rest" or by cleaning the USB connections.
I know how to keep my Mybook operational for now, but I will likely have to ditch it when I move to a multi FW bus computer in the future (unless WD can correct their firmware).

You can find out what processes are loading your system by running Application Monitor (in Launchpad > Utilities if you're running Lion or Launchpad > Other under Mountain Lion). Select "All Processes". Sort the display by CPU% (click on the label of that column). What processes show over 10% CPU?
Also, when you click on the CPU button on the lower bar, what shows as your % idle? (Mine is showing about 98% just reading and posting here.)
If no process is causing the heat, you could have a hardware problem. -

When returning from sleep my preferred network doesn't connect
After returning from sleep mode my prefered network won't automatically connect. I checked the settings and its set to automatically connect to my network. I have to turn of the wireless and then turn it back on or select my network before it will connect.
In Networking, make sure that Wireless is at the top of the list, if it is not then move it there above Ethernet. I also uncheck "Ask to join new Networks"
In Preferred Networks make the one you want the only one, if more than one set the priority of which one first. Check "Remember Networks this computer has joined" Most of this is in Advanced. -
I have an Ibook w/ Mac OS X 10.4.10. I have my computer set so that when it returns from sleep the user must enter the password to continue. Recently when i first open up the labtop it takes about a minute for me even to be able to type the password in. Once I am able to type i can hit and enter and now more waiting is required. I thought maybe it was because i was putting it to sleep w/ too many programs open but this was not the case. My brother has a twin to mine and he said he has never had anything of the sort happen with his. Any suggestions???
Sounds like a possible conflict when trying to redraw the screen.
main areas to look at are:
- cache
- font conflicts
- permissions
Go to disk utility in the affected user and repair disk permissions.
Open font book and select all fonts
Look in the second column and check for any black dots to the right of any of the font names.
If there are some the select the entire second column and go to the edit menu and resolve duplicates.
Then choose validate fonts from the file menu with all fonts selected in the second column.
Remove any fonts that do not have a circle with a checkmark.
Remove the user and root cache cache folders from the user Library and the root Library.
Restart the computer.
Test.
This can also be an issue of connecting to a network. If a network connection times out then when redrawing the screen the system may have to reconnect and log in. Also devices/volumes may need to establish communications or mount.
Test in a new user.
This can determine if you have a system wide issue or a user specific one. -
Secondary monitor occasionally not returning from sleep mode
Just got a new iMac the other day (24" 2.8GHz) and decided to use my Samsung 205BW to extend my desktop. Only problem is, sometimes when the computer is returning from sleep mode, the Samsung doesn't come back on. The blue led for the monitor goes from blinking to solid, so obviously it's trying to do something. A message will flash for a split second on the monitor and then disappear, but it's so fast I can't tell what it says. The only remedy I've found is to shut off the monitor and then turn it back on again. I'd rather it just not do this to begin with though.
Any suggestions? Let me know if you need more info.It just happened again, and I was able to read the message that flashes on screen (very sporadic): "Not Optimum Mode" and something along the lines of switch to 1680x1050? with a big question mark icon. I'm wondering if the Mac is trying to force a higher resolution on the monitor when it comes back from sleep mode, even though I have it set at 1680x1050?

Everytime I export from FCP using comressor I am lose my audio, any ideas as to why this is happening. Or do I have somthing turned off and I am just missing it? Dual 2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM, Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Exporting via Compressor may be recommended but it is slow and doesn't fully support all available filters, etc.
Try exporting the timeline as a QT Movie (the "normal" export) using Current Settings and them submit the resultant clip to Compression. Works for me... -
What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop? I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files. I have to immediately move to trash all the duplications on my desktop. How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)? Thanks for your help!
What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.

I am having issues related to storage and I believe this is causing my computer to slow down. "Other" files part is the major occupier(180 GB). I have done Omni disk and multiple other cleaning(iTunes-device, restart, etc), yet have not been able to empty any more space, nor to speed up my computer? Any suggestions?
