Why is my data usage so high?

Using Verizon's data calculator, 5G should me more than sufficient for the limited PC usage.  In one week, the data usage information indicates we have used over half in one week.  There are several entries in the breakdown for small amounts during the midnight hours, when computers are not in use and shut down.
I am very disappointed with the information provided before this plan was purchased, based on what we expected for our data needs.  By increasing the data amount our bill will increase 30.00  There are many sources that indicate 2G should be ample for each of us in the household (2).  So, I am not sure the calculations are correct that are being tracked with the Jetpack system.  Here is the data calculator, I entered more than twice the expected usage for the two laptops combined.  We download no music, videos, movies.  Simply check email and browse the web.  How do you explain this?

5/21/2014 Data Calculator - Verizon Wireless

The VZW Data Calculator is a tool designed to help estimate and visualize data usage.  Most folks have no idea what data is or how it is consumed on their devices.  The data calculator tool is not accurate on any front other than to give you a general idea how much data a particular function consumes under normal circumstances.
VZW provides its users with a limited data usage report that does not break down individual application or device usage into meaningful results.  What you get instead is a power bill like summary of your usage in terms of how much was used at certain times of the day.  After all VZW is not in the computer support business, they provide you with the pipe and users determine how best to consume the data.  A leaky hose or application is not the responsibility of VZW to discover and correct.
When it comes to the actual usage of your VZW device there isn't a whole lot out there that can show you how you are consuming your data plan.  Some monitor applications and devices can be setup ahead of time, but all they are good for is reviewing the data that flows through them.  Special care must be taken when designing and setting up monitors to make sure you capture everything.  Monitors are generally not user friendly to setup or understand and often require detailed readings of numerous logs to determine where problems are, if the monitor can even capture them at all.
The current best practices for data usage are as follows:
1. Power down your VZW device when it is not being used
2. Secure your VZW device with a custom SSID, WiFi and Admin password
- This should be in compliance with security best practices for strong passwords
- A good site to reference is https://howsecureismypassword.net/
3. Take care to disable and shutdown any automatic updates on your devices
4. Be cautious to view and download audio/video content on low resolution
In most cases high data usage is not an intentional doing on the users behalf.  It is the background applications and services installed on the connected devices that run rampant and chew up your data plan without your knowledge or consent.

  • Why did my data usage skyrocket with Ellipsis Jetpack?

My old wifi went down and the Verizon office sold me an Ellipsis Jetpack. My data usage immediately started going up although my Internet habits remained the same. I turn the Jetpack off when I'm not logged in and I changed the setting to only allow one user. I changed Facebook to not automatically start videos and I hit pause on every video that comes up on news feeds. I feel like I'm getting ripped off. I saw some discussion here earlier (can't find it now) that others are having the same problems but saw no answer from Verizon. Also, there are no diagnostics available online to see what is causing my usage to be so high and someone suggested that Verizon is blocking access to the information. Would I be better off finding a different wireless internet provider?

Same thing happened to me.  Can't understand why.  We'll see if they charge overages.

  • **Why soooo much data usage??**

    Hi everyone...
I am curious to know (when you go into your settings and then "cellular") why is there a need for data usage for MY MUSIC?? CONTACTS?? PHOTOS?? CALENDAR?? I mean especially music - that is DOWNLOADED to my phone so why the need for data?? Same for the others.
And are they USING DATA just by being there?? Or only when I like go into my cameral roll, or open my contacts??
I've always been very confused about how cellular data works. And I am currently staying where there is NO Wi Fi - NONE whatsoever. They use ethernet for the computer. Therefore, when using my phone (here - no Wi Fi) my data has been going QUICK! So I am now all the more curious as to how it all works and if there is anything I can do.
    Thanks so much.

Contacts, as an example, would use data when the contacts are synced with iCloud. Note that you can turn off cellular data usage for individual items such as Contacts, Calendar, etc on that same page (Settings > Cellular > Use Cellluar Data For) just by tapping the switch to the right of each so that it goes from green to white.

  • Why is my data usage increasing multiple times a day when I'm on wi-fi?

For both myself on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and my girlfriend on an iPhone 5c, both of which we got just a week ago, we see our data usage total increasing several times a day, typically in very small amounts, occasionally larger.  Her increases are about 10x larger than mine overall.  All of this happens when we're each on wi-fi so I wouldn't expect to see these increases then.  Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it?  I'm guessing it may be some sort of auto update processing happening in the background, but I don't know that for sure and don't know what else could be causing this.

After talking to 4 different Verizon reps today, nobody could pinpoint the
cause of this.  I was mostly just told not to worry about it.  My wifi has
seemingly been very solid both here and at work; I don't notice dropouts
when I'm doing other things on it.  But I did disable mobile data on the S4
and observed that the data usage did not increase any further after I did
that.  So I guess I'll either use that as my primary mode of operation, and
just manually reenable it when I know I'll be away from a wifi signal, or
turn mobile data back on and live with the ongoing hits until it becomes a
storage issue.  At the rate we're using data thus far, that shouldn't
    happen.

  • Iphone 5/ios6 data usage shockingly high

I'm not trying to minimize your issues, but I have an iPhone 5S and find that I have not had these types of problems on AT&T. I'm wonding if something has gotten stuck in a loop that is continually trying to use data. If you make a good backup of your phone, try restoring it as new, and do not add anything to the phone right away. Let the device run like this for a little while and see what kind of usage you have. You report you phone is showing usage of 21GB. Did you rese this setting on the phone to begin at your billing period? The reason I ask this is some people believe this setting resets on its own with your billing period, it does not. This has to be manually reset by the user, so it might not be that accurate depending on the last time that you reset it.
If the phone seems to not use so much extra data during the period the device does not have extra apps on it, then try restoring from your backup and see what happens. If this increases your data usage quite fast again, then there is probably something corrupt in the backup that is causing this issue.

  • Why the large data usage

my son's iphone usage says his phone used 10mb today alone. He's connected to our home wireless network when at home and doesn't surf or use his phone while away from home. What could be causing the large cellular data usage numbers?

Make sure it's backdated. If you don't do that then it won't go into effect until next billing cycle. Most common mistake people do.
    Things to consider:
Updates set on automatic on laptops and computer will randomly use your data. The biggest day is usually the first Thursday(IIRC) of every month on window devices(or whatever day after that you decide to turn them on). Also apps will auto update themselves(chrome for example. Plugins as well). To help reduce data usage it's best to make sure to turn auto updates off and manually check them.

  • Why is the Iphone3G high data usage so high ?

I have owned a blackberry for years and just made the switch. When traveling overseas, I receive and send emails and over a normal week period I only use about 700K when using a blackberry (as I do not open attachments until I get WIFI). HOWEVER with the iphone3g to send 4 simple emails and receive 8 emails in the morning I am up to 2.5MEG !!!! How is this possible when looking at my email account on exchange, the total data is only 100K ???? I have not used any other application which requires logging on to the net / gps etc. I am NOT happy as it means I have to turn on and off my phone roaming for 5 mins to check email which is a BIG pain (because from reading the discussions that the phone automatically checks for updates which appears to SERIOUSLY eat up data). Am I doing something wrong or has Apple seriously messed up ????

Unlike the Blackberry line all Smartphones that run Windows Mobile or in this case OS X on the iPhone use full HTML graphics for email and browsing. The Blackberry line restricts what the user actually is seeing by limiting the graphics to a lower version resembling almost a WAP like experience when browsing as is seen on regular cellphones. Both AT&T (USA) and O2 (UK) offer unlimited data plans for iPhone 3G users and even Rogers (Canada) offers a 6 GB data plan at a reasonable add on price of $30.00. The only concern would be for those that don't have a data plan or for those that have less than 400 MB.

  • Why is Flash CPU usage so high on my PC?

To other psoters here - Please do not hijack my thread for any other performance issues with Flash other than high CPU usage.
This thread is (hopefully) dedicated to why the CPU usage on my desktop PC jumps when I go to a page with flash 'content'. Thank you!
I am hoping that there is an answer for why my computer is using a very high amount of CPU percentage when I am viewing flash content?
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 on a Gateway GT5432 desktop computer.
I have Shockwave Flash version 11.7.700.169 installed.
I am using Firefox version 20.0.1 (but I have seen same problem of high CPU with Google chrome).
Here is one page that is causing the high CPU usage.
    -   http://logansroadhouse.com/Default.aspx
That page appears to have lots of Flash content.
If I open that logans roadhouse page, my CPU usage goes from an average of 12%, to 80%!
The process I see jump are:
    - Firefox's "plugin-container.exe" goes from 0% to about 50%
    - Firefox browser "firefox.exe" goes from around 8% to 14%
    - Adobe's plugin "FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_169.exe" goes from 0% to 16%
    - TOTAL CPU change from 8% to 80% after opening up just this one page !
When I close the page, the CPU usage goes down again. Open again - CPU goes high again.
Also if I go to the firefox addons page and DISABLE the SHOCKWAVE FLASH plugin, then go to that Logans Roadhouse page, very little of the content I saw with Flash enabled is visible - which I take to mean it is a page consisting of lots of Flash 'content'. Also the CPU usage remains low (8%) if I go to that page - after disabling the Shockwave Flash plugin.
I have seen the CPU also go high on youtube.com pages also - CPU jumps just as I said above - if Flash is enabled. CPU then drops after disabling Flash plugin.
I was hoping you had a fix for my problem? My PC becomes almost unusable with the CPU so high. It sure looks like it is the Flash plugin driving the CPU so high.

I am also facing the same problem from last 2-3 weeks since i upgraded my flash player to latest one.
All softwares and drivers are upto-date.
I play wartune MMO flash browser based game (also applicable to youtube videos)  which is now using above 80% of CPU. Before upgrading, CPU usage was normal around 5-15% depending upon the events, but not more than 20% even if i open 3-4 accounts of wartune in different windows at the same time. It happens in all browsers (IE10, Mozila22.00, Opera12.15, Chrome27.0.1453.116 m).
I tried all solutions like disabling  hardware acceleration, flash cache size to unlimited, clearing all flash cache etc but the same problem.
Please fix this problem as soon as possible.

  • Why is airplay upload usage so high? (using wireless speaker)

I have a iHome wireless speaker that I play using iTunes Airplay. It works fine but the upload usage is through the roof compared to the download usage (e.g. upload = 128KB/s, download = 7KB/s) - this seems strange, thought it should be the other way around, what am I uploading?  I've turned off all my iCloud settings, am not sending data back to Apple in iTunes so not sure what's going on - anyone else got any clues or knows how to fix this, it's chewing up my bandwidth usage big time.

Actually I figured it out - if you use the Apple Time Capsule as your internet server that seems to cause the upload usage, when I connected the speaker directly to the modem it is back to normal usage. Just thought I'd post this for anyone else who's had this issue.

  • Why is my memory usage so high?

This memory usage really shouldn't be okay, from having Chrome, Activity Monitor, Steam, and Skype running. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't that I don't have enough RAM. Does anything here look like is easily fixable?

Does anything here look like is easily fixable?
Nothing there looks like it needs to be fixed. Your memory usage is normal.

  • My iphone and desktop have the same ip address, new ipad comes up different. Ipad data usage very high. All use the same Linksys router

My  two iPhone4, Vista PC desktop, Gateway XP desktop and Dell XP portable all have the same IP address. New iPad2 comes up with a different one and seems to eat data from AT&T. All share the same residential router. Shouldn't the  iPad  IP be the same as the others?
    Thanks.
    Befuddled new iPad guy.

Excuse again. Wrong info. Router # comes up same for all units.
IP addreses are same except for last digit. As< I think it should be.
Think I will visit the Apple store.
Forget it, sorry to bother you. Fail.

  • Why is iTunes memory usage so high?

As the title states iTunes is using a riduclous amount of memory of my computer 150MB and continually rising until it freezes and then crashes. This is such a useless program and such a memory hog. Any ideas on how to reduce the stupid amount of RAM this program uses?

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • What's up with data usage on the iPad over LTE?

I am using the new iPad. This is not my first as I have had an ipad since version 1 (at first with a VZ Mifi, though now I have the one with LTE). When I first set up this iPad i did it on a prepaid account and so I have a baseline of experience (both with the mifi and with built in cellular) that is nothing like what I have experienced recently.
When I first activated, I averaged 1GB of data use. I activated on prepaid as I thought I might actually turn it off once in a while and I didnt want to have to go through VZ to do that - I don't have an hour+ to waste in store every time i want to do something with my devices. I later decided (silly me) I was not ever going to turn off the data, so why not put it on my regular plan.  The real rub here is my data usage still didnt change. I leave both radios (wifi and cell) on all the time. So when I am home, I am wifi, when i am out, I use cell.
The odd thing here is, since LTE has come to town, my usage has tripled. Now, some of this is because I have once or twice watched a movie or streamed some audio. But as this has happened only once or twice in a month, it does not explain lump data charges of 500-1,000mb charges hitting my device 5-6 times in a month. Consider this timeline:
On Saturday afternoon, I decided to use the NFL app to listen to an audio broadcast of the NE patriots game. I did so walking around town. I was easily streaming for 2 hours or more. According to VZW, the charge in data use for this (nearest to time) was at most 47mb.
Roll forward 2 days during which the two largest charges are 23mb and 13mb - I can even relate these charges to a couple apps I upgraded in that time frame and some podcasts that auto downloaded.
I see that at 3am on 9-18-12 I had data usage of 900mb. huh?
My wifi is always connected when I am at home
Even if, as some suggest on here, the wifi turns off when the device sleeps
There were no updates to be found
Movies don't download over Cell as they are over 50mb (though they will stream I think)
IOS does not allow podcasts or software updates over 50mb anyway so if it was either of those, it would have had to be like 30 of them!
I have a couple of theories:
Verizon charges for data as far as timing are way off. They really don't know WHEN data is being used. The system posts involve lags in update of data from towers. (server to server transmission, whatever)
There is a problem with LTE usage stats on Verizon. I am tempted to turn off LTE for a while to see if the usage goes down.
I don't want to turn off my cellular all the time as that defeats the usability of the thing. I just want it back the way it was and for these phantom charges to stop. There is nooooo way my ipad used 900mb overnight by itself. There just isn't that much data to be had to bring into the thing when I am not using it.
Please reply to this with answers only if you KNOW something. I know many will want to be helpful, but if you want to be really really helpful, you will differentiate speculation from fact.
Has anyone else noticed that LTE data usage is higher? (and not just because having faster speeds makes you want to do more stuff)

Sorry Tominique, great answer to the question I didnt ask. I know how to add data to my plan.
My point is, my usage pattern has changed little. yet I am using at a rate 5 times what I was before. And I rarely stream content so I know thats not it. And the times I do, does not coincide with those ridiculous usage figures.
I get that having more bandwidth will open a stream "wider" so to speak and cause more data usage in order to get better quality. However, in the case of Audio, that extra usage doesnt even come close to justifying these kinds of figures. Much less when posting at 4am when I am fast asleep.
And forgive me for being a bit curt, but does my post read like I needed to be told that using wifi will save me cell data usage? I know it was pretty long, but at least read it carefully before proposing something so mundanely simplistic.
And Brian68- Yup, I agree Spot on with you on song size. A 10mb song is a 10mb song. Doesn't matter how fast the stream is. I could see music being compressed, but it most definitely doesn't get any bits added just because the bandwidth opens up. lol What? VZW somehow upgraded my itunes match content from 256kb up to lossless? doubtful.

  • New phone shows high data usage in My Verizon right after purchase - why?

I purchased a new Galaxy S5 yesterday.  We looked at "My Verizon" and saw data usage of 470 MB on the summary, but the phone showed 14 MB.  I downloaded the data usage details, and they also showed 14 MB.  Today her summary shows 1556 MB, but the detailed data spreadsheet cells add up to 162.49 MB.  The phone is on wifi only.  What gives?  My wife has averaged around 200 MB per month for years.  Is this some kind of fraud?  We got my daughter a new IPhone and go nailed for a $10 data overage within a 24 hours.  There were two half-gig downloads, but there is no way to trace what they were, whether some kind of Apple-induced downloads or what.  Verizon customer service gave us an extra gig since the store failed to tell us that the data usage was pro-rated.  They also failed to tell my wife to set the phone to wifi only until all of the phone's little data-sucking default applications did their updates.  I was totally off contract with 5 phones, and just put 4 new little data-sucking piggy phones back on contract for two years for my family.  My own phone number 5 will not be with Verizon.  Unless they change their loan-shark practices on data charges, this will be my last contract with Verizon.  Their customer support folks are great, but I have a low tolerance for a billing system that cannot be audited for accuracy in data charges.

Regarding your second comment, you are dead-on correct.  My daughter's last plan was Virgin with unlimited data and 200 minutes of talk.  We failed to sit down together and go over the differences.  While I was ultimately responsible for explaining the need to turn off cellular coverage at home, I still feel the need to let my Verizon sales rep know to stress this to customers like us who have lived for years with unlimited data plans.
I am taking your advice and pulling the trigger on Republic tomorrow.  They have a referral plan that will give both me and my son $19 after the first payment period ends.  I appreciate your feedback!

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...
