Why is my "Documents and Data" section taking up so much space on my iPhone?

Before I updated my iPhone to iOS7, my "Other" section was giant, taking up over 4 GB! After I updated, the section split into "Other" and "Documents and Data". My "Other" section is under control now, but my "Documents and Data" section has over 3 GB, and I can't figure out why. I deleted many, many texts and it hardly changed the usage in this section. I've searched all over Google and Apple and can't seem to find a solution.
I don't even know what this space is used for. What falls under the usage of "Documents and Data"?
And how can I minimize this usage?!

According to Apple at the time to the iOS launch, it was confirmed that the iOS 8 in iPhone 6 will consume maximum 3GB of space.
So its actually the iOS 8 and the system files that has been categorized in the OTHER section using 2.83GB of space.

Why turning off Document and Data in iCloud would erase all files in iPad?

When turning off calendar or contact in iCloud, I can select to keep existing entries in the iPad device, but there is no option to "keep" doc. & data files in my iPad device? How can I select files I want to keep in iCloud rather than upload them in a "wholesale" fashion?

Hi doodlebuglondon. I understood you throughout the thread as I have the same situation. I turned it on, then decided immediately to turn it back off. It then gives you the scary warning, assuming you understand under what circumstances documents got stored in the iCloud. Like you, I had no idea. But I did see 5 GB of 5GB available on iCloud Storage, which was a hint. So I opened a folder with some Pages documents, turned off Documents & Data, clicked the big scary "Delete from Mac" button. If it had really deleted my iWorks documents, like you, I would have had to restore perhaps 40 or 50 disparate folders. Whew!
Did it work out OK for you? I note you were very clear in pointing out you hadn't actively put anything in iCloud, but who knows whether Apple magically puts stuff in iCloud for you. I couldn't find that explained anywhere in Apple's "instructions", but I'm sure it's buried in there somewhere.

I want to roll ff back to 3.0, 4.0 and up is taking up to much space to run. since i have updated to 5.0 the problem is killing my laptop and i liked how well 3.0 ran, it didnt max out my cpu like 4.0 and up does.

firefox is using up to 90% of my PCU on my laptop. I spend more time twiddling my thumbs waiting for things to load or i watch my laptop crash from over heating. I did not have this problem with 3.0 and would like to go back to it, how do I roll back firefox to 3.0 so my laptop doesnt burn up ? i run vista on my laptop.

In case your Firefox profile became damaged during the upgrade, or add-on is causing the problem, you could test whether a new blank Firefox profile cures those ills.

You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.

Yes, I am logged in as the administrator. When I drag a loop to the trash it does nothing. The trash doesn't recoginize the item as trash and doesn't pop up and say trash like it does when I drag items from other programs to the trash.

Hello. I have a question, when i connect to itunes, on my computer, with my iphone to sync in up there is a colored bar across the bottom that is broken up into 3 colors and sections. One section of the bar is orange (photos) one section is green, i think (apps) and the last section is yellow (other). What is that "other " section made up of? I dont have very many apps, keep around 200 photos and try not to go over that. I have some videos too, maybe around 50, all under 1 minute or a hair longer. I always clean up my emails and stuff. So, whats making up this yellow "other storage, which is the bulk of my storage. Id like to free up some space. Thanks, Owen

I wrote this a while ago; repeating it here:
"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
email messages and attachments
Reminders
Calendar entries
Contacts
Text messages
MMS messages and attachments
Genius data
Music cover art
Operating system settings (Bluetooth, WiFi networks, Preferences - everything you can set with "Settings")
Safari cache
bookmarks
Game Center status
Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. However, old images were not deleted from Other; its just that new images were being correctly removed when you delete an MMS message.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

I have 1.15 gigs of "other" on my iphone. Does anyone know what this category consists of? I would like to find some ways to clear clutter on my phone but am not sure whether what if anything in the "other" category I can modify. Thanks.

I don't believe these are kept in flash, for the reasons I outlined in a recent thread. Briefly, the web cache seems to go away on a reset, the page limit seems like a RAM limit to me, and flash is slow to write to and has a 5,000 write limit on this device.
But I'd love to know for sure. Got any proof, even empirical, that you've seen the "Other" change with cache? Loading or clearing doesn't seem to make any difference that I've seen.
Besides, eight pages of maybe 1/2 MB each? That's not very much.
We need someone with a hacked phone to go look at their /tmp directories.

Documents & Data are not taking up any space in iTunes.Delete some apps.
Select the iPhone in iTunes and remove the apps.
Or on the iPhone, Settings > General > Usage.
THis will show how mach space each app and its data is using. You can delete them here.

These are 2 different things and have to be address 2 different ways.
The other, that shows up in iTunes on the bar is memory the device is not recovering, for what every reason.
To reclaim that you need to wipe the iPhone and setup as new.
The Documents and Data in the iCloud storage.
Tap the Doc or data type
then swipe right to left on the data and press delete

It can't do that by itself. You had to click through several prompts telling it to restore it from a backup of an old phone for that to happen.
If the phone was not backed up to iCloud before this happened, or to another computer, then the data is gone. There is no way to recover it.

Had the same problem and read a few posts. Easiest fix is delete and reinstall imovie. Clears out all the data that imovie takes up by recreating temp files which you can't seem to delete when you upload videos to YouTube
