Why is my fan always running at 5500 rpm?

My MacBook Pro is about 6 months old and suddenly over the last 2-3 days the fans are always running around 5500 rpm. The CPU heat is around 190 Farenheit with the fans running like this.  It's sitting on my desk with nothing but the desk underneath.  Are there any solutions to this issue?
Thanks

Okay - Dang this was a pain to figure out!
Macbook Pro 15" 8gb 2.2ghz running 10.6.8. After many of hours and dead-end solutions on these "help" boards I finally figured out whay my fans were always running at full tilt, even when NO programs were running. Ready for the answer, wait for it.... my HP deskjet printer!!!!!! If I leave the USB connection plugged in the fans run a 5500rpm + even at idle! Unplug the usb to the printer - fans settle to uner 2000rpm. I did find a string that said look at my printer que for active lists - but to no avail.
I have had this laptop to the mac repair for this problem (of course they coulnd' simulate it there) and done all the dang SMC resets, system installs, etc told to do on these boards - AND NO, it is not "normal" for the fans to run like this!
Hope it helps someone out there who has been pulling out their hair with this one!

  • Why do both fans always run at 6000 RPM

I have a 17" MB Pro which spins both fans at 6k ALL the time (when it's on), even though the machine is not running hot.
They go off properly when it's in sleep mode, but after wakeup or restart the fan speed will start out slow (and inaudible), then slowly increase until after a minute or so both are running at max speed.
CPU heatsink temps are in the 93 - 95 degree (F) range.
I have reset SMC, deleted com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, same behavior.
Any thoughts on this? The noise is getting to me.......

I have just begun to have the same problem as of last night, also with a 17" MBP. I spent time on the phone with an AppleCare rep, but the fans stopped on their own after a reboot into Windows and then back into Mac OSX. As of right now, they've started again.
As in the case of the first poster, my computer is not running hot, nor is any process taking up a lot of CPU cycles. This is really perturbing me.

  • Fans always running at 6000 RPM.

I have had this problem since my friend gave me his old macbook pro. The fans are very loud and running very fast. First I thought dust might be stuck inside but I checked and nothing was there. Nevertheless I cleaned it. When I powered on my macbook it was still very loud so I checked with SMCFanControl and it was still running at 6000 RPM. I have tried resetting PRAM and the SMC without any success. Also software like SMCFanControl and iCyclone won't let me change the speed even though the CPU is at 40C most of the time. I don't really want to take it for repair at the apple store because they will probably charge me a fortune. It is a MacBook Pro Late 2006 model. Thank You.

Same situation here - the only update: it started to happen after I replaced the palmrest, screen assembly and installed SSD Intel X25M drive. First, at startup fans are quiet, and then slowly going to higher speeds. Since I did upgrade everything at the same time I did not catch what was the source of this issue. First I blaimed SSD since it's not getting any warmer (as oppose to standard SATA drive) and that might have confused the Mac's fan control. The other thought was the SSDs have a different SMART reporting method... Well, all kinds of resets (SMC and PRAM) did not help, neither utilities like smcFan Control and others. BTW, smcFan control shows temps from 35C-37C and 5200-5500 RPM. Fans are blowing a cool air, no signs of overheating at all.
    Bad temp sensors?
    Any thoughts?

  • Fan always running on my HP Pavilion All-in-One 200-5000 (model #2MD0400F1W)

The fan on my HP Pavilion All-in-One 200-5000 (model #2MD0400F1W) seems to be always running (and it's not quiet). I believe I'm running the latest BIOS and I've already checked to make sure the air vents are clear. I'm not running any memory or processor intensive applications. Any suggestions how to reduce how long and frequently the fan seems to be running? Thanks.

    Hello @jmgoldsmith,
I understand that you are having issues with the fan always running on your HP Pavilion All-In-One 200-5000 Desktop PC. I would be happy to assist you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer the number you provided is not a product number (example : HP Pavilion All-In-One 200-5000t CTO Desktop PC has a product number of BN997AV). I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this and the product number I can provide you with accurate information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • My fan always runs on my macbook, any tips?

Currently I have my macbook on a clean desk with good ventilation, but my fan always runs, even if there are no programs open. I've reset the SMC, and checked that theres no printing jobs in the printing queue but no luck. I've had this macbook for about a year and a half and have used it a ton since then. I dont want anything to burn out or break in my laptop. Any tips? thanks

I have the same problem on my late 2008 Macbook white 2.1 GHz Intel duo, running 10.5.8. I had read in another post here that I should check Activity Monitor and I did so. The first time I tried, as soon as I launched AM the fan stopped. I then left AM open and the next time the fan started (I was online, doing nothing in particular - I did have 4 or 5 panels open though) I checked AM and the process that came at the top of the list with 90-odd CPU usage was kernel_task. I quit AM and then launched it again and the fan stopped, with kernel_task taking up about 2% of the CPU and Safari around 30%.
    What's going on? Hardware? Software?

  • Satellite P100-347: After 4.10 BIOS update fan always runs at maximum

    Hi!
I have an P100-347 and had graphics stuttering problems while playing games. By updating BIOS 4.0 to 4.10 it solve the stuttering problem!!!
Now my fan always runs at maximum, It never ideals.
It's still the same even when i chooes lowconsumption configuration. I use the same drivers as before, just only updated the bios.
I have alsow tested with the latest intel chipset divers and Nvidia driver and it is still the same.
So my conclution is the BIOS, does Toshiba know anything about this issue and working on a newer bios?
    Kind Regards Ismael

Everything points that the BIOS 4.10 is the common issue to the always high speed of the graphical fan even when the laptob is in standby mode.
I want to see some action like a new revise of the BIOS 4.10!

  • My Macbook's Fan Constantly Runs at 5600+ RPM

have noticed that for the past few days, my fan was running all the time, and very loudly from the time I turn it on, until I turn it off. I got istat pro and saw that my fan was running at 5500-6000 rpm all the time. Can anybody tell me whats going on?

Yes, do a reset and if you are running something like Parallels. It does use a lot of CPU cycles which heats things up. Open up your activity monitor to see how much CPU percent you are using when the fan is running high. It will also tell you what programs are using it too.

  • Cpu fan is running at -1 rpm!!

h, i've been facing slight problems with my mac that it overheats sometimes, so after some research i found out that i can download a program called fan control where i basically can control the speed of my fans. then i found out that my cpu fan is running at -1 rpm, the desired rpm is 300, my other fans (hd and dvd) are running at the desired rpm, i'm not sure if i should be worried!!! i mean do i have to replace it!? and if so where and how!!!?? btw i've just got this laptop used, it's a 15" late 2008 with the highest configueration.

Resetting the SMC was my first thought, but you have done that. You might also try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
After that if the issue persists, I would call AppleCare.

  • Post serviced IMac and the fan is running at top RPM.

I had my IMac serviced doe to the HDD dieing. When I got it back, the HDD fan is running at max RPM. I've tried to reset the PRAM (7 times, over and over) and tried to reload the SMC patch and no luck. Apple Store is over 2 hours away so I'd like to save 8 hours on the road by figuring our if there is anything else that I can try to fix this.
C2Duo IMac with Tiger and the 'fans played on' from the moment I got it back and started restoring the data.
    Any ideas?
Also, a new AppleCare agreement talks about 'onsite service'. Do they actually do onsite service? Does one have to request it? It wasn't offered when I called in after finding the fan issue.
    Thanks!!!

So, I called AppleCare and they walked me through an 'SMC reset' routine and now SMCFANCONTROL doesn't run AND all the fans sounds like they are running at full speed.
I got a call that they want to swap my system rather than have me wait for a new sensor. I wonder what issues I might have with a 'refurb' system.
There is another issue, there is a smear of some kind of glue on the screen from the service experience.
It's been interesting dealing with their support...
I can't stand the whine of the fans and now am back on Windows for most things. Yippee...

  • Why is my macbook Slow and fan always running

I recently upgraded to Mavericks, and since then my computer has been slow and lagging a lot. I see the perpetual spinning beach ball more than I would like. I have done everything I can think of within my knowledge to rectify the problem but it still seems slow to me. I have unistalled apps, cleared caches, run an antivirus, run onyx and cleanmymac applications. I don't know what else I can do. I also find that my fan is running constantly and when I look at the activity monitor nothing is eating my CPU, in fact it is always below 10%. Here is my most recent Etrescheck. PLEASE HELP!! I'm open to all and any suggestions. Thank YOu

Installing CleanMyMac will corrupt your system. I know of no way to recover from its effects other than to reinstall OS X and other essential software. "Essential" is defined to specifically exclude CleanMyMac as well as all similarly ill-conceived "cleaning" products that are likely to have similar effects. Never install such junk on a Mac.
Erasing your Mac will have the benefit of eradicating it, the useless Avast garbage, and Internet Plug-Ins as well.
You are likely to need more memory. 2 GB is barely sufficient to run any OS later than Snow Leopard. Your MacBook can address as much as 8 GB and I recommend at least 4 GB.

  • Closed lid, fans always running

Howdy. I've been using my MBP in closed lid mode attached to a Cinema Display. I expected the fans to run constantly when in use, especially with XP running in Parallels. When I put the computer to sleep--still attached to monitor, usb keyboard, bluetooth mouse and power adapter--it acts as I suspect it would, fans stop, front LED starts fading in and out. However, I'll come back later and the LED will be solid, display blank, and the fans running away. The keyboard or mouse will wake the computer and then it runs as normal. This has happened overnight as well as in half an hour, and several times.
I am kind of getting concerned about using the computer this way. Fans always fail, and I am not really looking forward to opening the computer up again.
I guess my questions are: why would the computer be running the fans, especially after being in sleep for hours, and is it shortening my MBPs expected life using it with the lid closed?
    Thanks.

I'd guess/assume that something is actually waking it from sleep and causing the heat/fan activity and that when you return you're not actually waking it up just re-activating it from screensaver mode ...
Run Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left - what lines appear during the time you think it should be sleeping ?
It isn't shortening the life of the hardware using it in clamshell mode but if something is causing it to overheat regularly that will have an impact on internal components/motherboard that could be detrimental.

  • Fan always running due to Dashboard

I noticed lately that my fan is always running so I opened up activity manager and saw that dashboard was using 80% and was not responding. I forced closed it and the same thing happened. It's happening as I write this.
Is there a way to disable dashboard? How can I make this stop? The battery is running out so fast because of this...
    Thanks

Sounds like you have a problem with one of your widgets. Have you downloaded/installed any new ones recently? Have you downloaded and installed any updates for your computer?
Rather than killing dashboard, make a note of what widgets are running. Close all of them (to do this, click the + icon in the lower left corner, then click the X on the widget you want to close.
If the CPU usage decreases after closing the widgets, you can then relaunch them one at a time and observe the CPU usage. The widgets are in these folders: Macintosh HD>Library>Widgets
    Macintosh HD>Users>yourusername>Library>Widgets
It sounds to me like one of your widgets is stuck & that's causing the issues.

  • Why does the fan stay running?

If it seems abnormal, did you install anything new since it began?

  • Msi Ge70 onc fan always running.

I bought the MSI GE70 ONC gaming laptop on laptopsdirect.co.uk
Laptop came in original package. I was happy.. until I started it.
From first use laptop was very noisy. Fan is working with high speed even when during typing emails or preforming simple tasks.
The fan is always running on 100% efficiency even when I start up the laptop. It doesn't want to stop unless I wait for about 40 mins without preforming any task on the computer.
This is really annoying. I never had an issue like that before.
I am dissapointed with this laptop. I understand that if I run high demanding software the fan will work loudly, but not during web surfing.
Otherwise the laptop is great. I mainly bought this laptop for video edition and I expected better quality for 977 euros I paid for this laptop.
I also have a video on how the fan is working, here is the link below.
    tinypic(dot com)/r/2mh7sy1/6
Should the fan be working like this?
If this isnt normal what should I do?
I also rang msi and a woman said to email msi about this but I send msi 2 emails and they didnt respond ;(

When I turn on the laptop the fan goes to 100% and after about 30 mins the laptop's fanstop.
When I launch not heavy applications like internet explorer or wordpad the fan turns on for 20 seconds and stops.
I even had a case when I right clicked on the desktop the fan started working.
No affence but i could just pay 50€ and buy another laptop.
About 1 month ago I had problems with windows 8 and had to reinstall windows twice. ;(
