Why is my file system slow to respond?

I'm currently running Snow Leopard an early 2011 Macbook Pro.  The laptop also runs Intel's 320 SSD as its primary storage.
I've noticed recently that my file system appears to be running slow and by that, I mean if I try to Save a file from the web, save a document from Office, or a photo from Photoshop, the prompt that lets me select where to store the file takes about 10 seconds to pop up.  Everything else with the system runs pretty fast.  The computer still boots up quickly as an SSD does.  Opening programs takes one bounce or so... but the saving a file prompt across the board has been extremely slow.
Since I'm not sure where to start for troubleshooting, I'm just wondering if anyone else has observed something similar.  I really don't want to upgrade to Lion so that's not an option for me.  Is there anything else I can try?

Do you have any Login Items that launch at startup? If so, disable them and see if the problem remains.
The only two Login things that may be related to the file system are my NAS automount script and Dropbox. All of the scripts have been with me since the beginning and this only happened within the last couple of weeks I think.
What's the capacity of your hard drive (not the SSD), and how much free space is left?
Sorry I wasn't clear, the SSD is my primary and only hard drive in the MBP.  I've used less than half of the storage and there's still over 300GB free.  The whole setup is less than a year old.
When did this problem first start, and did you install or update anything just prior to that time?
If so, what exactly did you install or update?
I suggest you download, install, and run AppleJack according to the instructions. Then test for the problem again to see if there's any improvement.
The only thing I remember installing recently are the Apple updates that have to do with the new printer drivers.  I think I noticed things slowing down after that update... not sure if it was also slow before that.

  • Why do pdf files load slow

when I open pdf files in illustrator it is painfully slow.  Can you tell what I should try to do?
    Thanks,
    Allan

they are approval templates we put designs in for clients.  we make custom clothing.  the file size can range from 1mb to 25mb.  they are not that big i don't think, but they load terribly slow.  there are lots of vector points in the templates but i don't know if they makes a difference.  .ai and .eps files load fine of the art work.  if i create a file and save it in .ai it opens fine.  if i then save it in .pdf it takes a long time to save it and every time opening is slow too.  there was a time when this was not the case and i have just put up with it.

  • Video files are slow to respond with "get info"

When trying to change the file information with the Get Info, it takes 40/41 seconds for each file to open.
If I change one file from movie to tv show and select next, it will also take 41 seconds to load the next file.
I dont know if its the new itunes or my brand new computer.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
    Thanks
    Craig

Alas, with much perserverence, I found a solution. My new machine is a Dell E520 and had updates to download .Firstly a BIOS update and more importantly an Intel SATA Matrix Storage Manage Update. With both of these updates, my iTunes is now reading video files in a few seconds.
The difference is mind blowing and certainly as it should be. In fact, it is better than it ever was (but then it should be with a new computer).
Thanks to you that reported the SATA problem. It gave me another avenue to research and a final solution. Which just goes to show, (what someone said to me many years ago): "don't accept something that is just ok, make sure you love it and you will enjoy it so much more."
    Good Luck

  • Why is iTunes Store so slow to respond?

This has been going on for weeks. You click the icon to go to the store and it takes forrrrrrevvvvvverr to finally load.

I have the same problem and when I run diagnostics it says unable to connect to a secure server.  If you go into the Help menu and click diagnostics, then uncheck all but the top option and run it; then click next after it runs ... you will get a diagnostics detail that can be copied to your clipboard and posted.  This is what people need to help you.

  • PSE 10 system slows down when adding files to catalog

I recently switched from PSE 3 to PSE10 and had issues converting the catalog.  I never did resolve those so I decided to start with creating a new catalog in PSE 10.  My first session of adding photos worked fine.  When I restarted the task the next day, I was asked in participating in making the product better by sharing information about my use with Adobe.  I agreed to participate and very quickly noticed that my computer slowed considerably when adding photos from my hard drive.  The process still worked but I experienced a dramatic increase in the time it took for photos to be added (e.g. the cursor spins for a couple of minutes while the task is working).  I went under my account preferences and opted out of the product participation program but the problem has persisted.  I rebooted the computer to see if that would help but it has not.  I have turned off all media analysis and both optimized and repaired my catalog and while this has provided some improvement, there are still instances where the system slows down.  Now it seems that every other folder's worth of pictures (does not matter how many photos) I add causes this delay.
I appreciate any help anyone can provide in determining why this slow down keeps occuring.
FYI, I am running a new Windows 7, 64-bit system with 8GB DDR-3-1066MHz, and 2 TB hard drive.

Have you also edited the Preferences (Performance) to increase the amount of RAM that PSE can use?
Do you have many background processes running?  Having a single HDD means that everything running on your computer has to wait in the queue for disk access.
How many photos are you importing?
What file types are the photos?
    How large are the photos?

  • Why can't I access the K1 file system from my PC?

I could access the entire file system excluding the data folder yesterday. However since installing Letools, I no longer can drag-and-drop photos and movies to the K1 from Windows Explorer.  I uninstalled Letools, but I still can't access the file system.
    Please help.
    Thank you

Thank you for trying to help. We have compared security mode settings and their Macs say that commenting is allowed, while mine says it's not allowed. I'm assuming this is why I can't highlight and they can. But I dont understand why they're different? The files this happens to are PDFs that our college classes assign as reading- so we all go to the same place to access these PDFs and save them, so the security modes shouldn't be different, but they are. Any idea why? Are Macs just enabled to do this for whatever reason and PCs aren't?

  • Why is the On Demand so slow to respond

    Title says it all
Why is the On Demand so slow to respond?
You have very fast Internet but extremely On Demand Programming Why is that?
Fix it or ill have to go back to Road Runner. My wife runs a Preschool/Daycare and needs Fast On Demand programming because she's very busy with the kids.
She allows them to watch some of the children's programming if they did well in the class work but she doesn't have time to wait for the EXTREMELY SLOW Response.

Memory leakage causes it to run slow. One way to easily fix this is to reboot the box. It will automatically reallocate memory. To reboot, simply unplug power cord for 1 min then plug back in.

  • System slow while copying files

    Hi,
    I found a problem on my iMac 27" (2011).
While I'm copying files from a folder to another in the same hdd (this only happens with the iMac hdd) or when unzip a file my system slows down, if I'm watching a video, sometimes freezes the image and then continues.
    is it normal?
I've tryed to reset PRAM NVRAM, and verify permissions, and nothing seems to solve the problem.

Copying files from one folder to another on the same harddrive puts double duty on the harddrive to read And write the files.  This also consumes CPU cycles, so when watching video, which is data intense from the harddrive or internet also, your system is under heavy load and what you are experiencing is pretty normal.  That is one reason that heavy data and viedo users often upgrade when ordering their machine to extra harddrives, hyperthreading CPU's, more RAM and oversized graphics cards.
    Hopee this helps

I am deleting 44,000 files; why is it so very slow to do this chore?

Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down?
Yes. Back up all data, then uninstall "Bitdefender" completely according to the developer's instructions -- NOT by dragging an application to the Trash or hunting for files by name.

  • Why can't I load plugins from file system ?

    Hello.
Why can't I load plugins from file system, fore development sake for ex. ?
    Thx.
    Andrew.

For security reasons, the Flash Player doesn't allow applications to access both the file system and the network.
One workaround is to compile the plugins in statically (rather than load them dynamically).  The Akamai Plugin Sample shows you how to load plugins either way, you can see the source here: http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/osmf/trunk/apps/samples/plugins/AkamaiPluginSam ple/.

  • Why would anyone want to use ASM Clustered File system?

    DB Version: 11gR2
    OS : Solaris, AIX, HP-UX
I've read about the new feature ACFS.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/ACFS_11gR2.php
But why would anyone want to store database binaries in a separate Filesystem created by Oracle?

    Hi Vitamind,
how do these binaries interact with the CPU when they want something to be done?
ACFS should work with Local OS (Solaris) to communicate with the CPU . Isn't this kind of double work?ACFS dont work with .... but provide filesystem to Local S.O
There may be extra work, but that's because there are more resources that a common filesystem.
Oracle ACFS executes on operating system platforms as a native file system technology supporting native operating system file system application programming interfaces (APIs).
ACFS is a general purpose POSIX compliant cluster file system. Being POSIX compliant, all operating system utilities we use with ext3 and other file systems can also be used with Oracle ACFS given it belongs to the same family of related standards.
    ACFS Driver Model
An Oracle ACFS file system is installed as a dynamically loadable vendor operating system (OS) file system driver and tool set that is developed for each supported operating system platform. The driver is implemented as a Virtual File System (VFS) and processes all file and directory operations directed to a specific file system.
It makes sense you use the ACFS if you use some of the features below:
    • Oracle RAC / RAC ONE NODE
    • Oracle ACFS Snapshots
    • Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager
    • Cluster Filesystem for regular files
    ACFS Use Cases
    • Shared Oracle DB home
    • Other “file system” data
    • External tables, data loads, data extracts
    • BFILES and other data customer chooses not to store in db
    • Log files (consolidates access)
    • Test environments
    • Copy back a previous snapshot after testing
    • Backups
    • Snapshot file system for point-intime backups
    • General purpose local or cluster file system
    • Leverage ASM manageability
Note : Oracle ACFS file systems cannot be used for an Oracle base directory or an Oracle grid infrastructure home that contains the software for Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM, Oracle ACFS, and Oracle ADVM components.
