Why is my hard drive split up like this?

Ok so my hard drive is split up into five different parts. I have a 1 TB by the way. They are:
the C: drive-902 GB
Unallocated-28GB
Hidden 400MB
System 260MB
Hidden 391MB
Anyway can anyone tell me why its split up that way? Can I somehow allocate the 28Gb to the c drive? And what are the hidden drives?
If you need more info let me know. I'm trying to learn as much about computers as possible because I want to work in IT someday and right now i just don't know what info is relevent. BTW I'm running windows 8 64 bit.
Thanks!

  • Why is my hard drive filling up? 'this user tip is completed'

The first most common question arises out of an industry standard for hard drives. The industry considers 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte, 1 million bytes = 1 megabyte, etc... When in actuality they are multiples of 1024. This article from Apple's knowledgebase explains it in more detail:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30065
You can use the program called Whatsize to determine if there is something eating up your hard disk space:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/index.php
In addition, people with older versions of MacAlly iShock drivers have been known to have increasingly large logfiles. Updating the drivers fixes this known bug.
Incomplete burns or backups with Carbon Copy Cloner will result in lost space. If you use the latter, there are instructions for clearing your /Volumes/ directory on Bombich's website.
You can typically save quite a bit of space by removing all the non-English languages from your installation (which was a customizable option when you first installed) using the utility Monolingual:
    http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
I keep my Safari cache at 1 MB in its preferences.
If you leave your computer on overnight certain logfiles can be cleaned up and space saved. The freeware Macjanitor can force these cleanup tasks to happen:
    http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html
Though I try to keep my machine cleaned up by leaving it on overnight at least once a month.
Once you have at least 2 GB free, you can burn to CD at least twice any data you may want to access at a later time but don't need immediately.
Short of these solutions, deleting files which you don't need, and backing up those which you do off the main disk is probably the best way to handle losing lots of space. Use this article as well as other good backup solutions on the net to determine what you need to backup:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239
If you have a question about how to simplify your backup process, there are quite a few people on Apple Discussions who can offer you some suggestions.

  • Why are my mounted drives showing up like this?

I just got a a new 27" iMac and I imported my back up from Time Machine and main drive is on there twice. I have a screen shot of it but I think I post a pic here so here is a link to it on my Mobile Me gallery. http://gallery.me.com/kjsimpson/100053/Drives
Is it possible to re name them I.E. get rid of (2), only show the main drive once, etc.

It's really not being shown twice. "Home iMac (2)" is the overall Mac. If you click on it in the sidebar, it should show you all volumes currently mounted over to the right. "Macintosh HD" is one of those volumes, the internal drive.
If you don't want to show the overall Mac as a "device," go to Finder preferences Sidebar tab, and uncheck Computer.
I'm not sure why there is a "(2)" in the name, but you can get rid if it in System Preferences Sharing tab. If the "(2)" appears in the +Computer Name+, remove it there. The Finder sidebar should change to reflect that change.

  • Why is my hard drive mostly backups?

Why is my hard drive full of backups?
Okay, my computer was running low on storage space, so I decided to clean it up. Now, my storage tab in "about this mac" looks like this:
What happened? Is there a secret folder somewhere where I can delete all these backups? I have a 2009 macbook pro that has seen better days, and I am currently running on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1. My computer doesn't run well after it has less than 100gb of free space left. Can someone please help? I would get another mac, but I don't have the money. Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • Why do new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX Server?

Why new new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX server?

If it only failed in 8 days.. I just return the drives back to newegg and get a different brand like western digital. NewEgg has a 30 day return policy.
If you deal with any hard drive manufacturer now, they will give you a refurbished item and not a new item that you are entitled.
    As for testing  hardware....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
even if it still passed Apple tests.. it does not mean logicboard is fine..... it just means it passes the tests.
At this point, If i were you, I would just go back to NewEgg and send back the Seagates letting know they are bad and prefer a different brand such as Western Digital.
Install the Western Digitals and see how long they last. If they fail again in a a short amoung of time, it's the logicboard then.
This is based on experience in dealing with repairs with Macs, PCs, and other various kinds of Servers and computers over the last 10+ years.
In fact, One of my clients who has a Dual 4-core Intel Xeon Server with a Supermicro logicboard, one of their SATA drive ports are bad. Every 4 months like clock work the Mirror RAID Drive would degrade on that port. Then after figuring out that the drives are not necessary bad, I swapped to using another spare  SATA port and since then no problems.

  • The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

The backup files for my devices are saved to my internal hard drive. I have a small internal hard drive and would like them to be saved to an external drive. How can I change where iTunes automatically backs up to?

This has nothing to do with iTunes as iTunes provides no way to move or relocate the backup files.
A search of google or the fourms would reveal ways to create a folder link to relocate the physical location where the files are stored.

  • Why  will photoshop not open after loading it to new iMac computer from an external hard drive and I get this message: Licensing for this product has stopped working:error code: 150:30

Why will Photoshop CS4 not open after loading to new iMac from an external hard drive and I get this message: Licensing for this product has stopped working:error code: 150:30

A Photoshop installation is tied to the machine it was installed on. Moving it to or from a hard drive breaks the licensing.
The answer is easy: Reinstall CS4 from your disc. and apply all updates.

  • Why is my hard drive full when I only have the operating system loaded and nothing else?  No pics, music, nothing...It's the 60 Gig hard drive on the air built in late 2010.

Why is my hard drive full when I'm only running the operating system and nothing else is loaded?  No music, pics, nothing! I understand the hard drive is small at 60 gig, but I can't believe the os would take up that much space.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Why is my hard drive requiring authentication before allowing me to drag documents to it?

Why do you even think it needs defraginng, your iMac is not an old MS Windows machine?. Defragging HD's is a very antiquated and unneccessary thing to do. Even current MS Windows machines don't need it.

  • Why lock a hard drive?

When you are in a finder window and you selected "get info" on a hard drive, down at Ownership and Permissions there is a lock for the Hard Drive. What is this used for?

    Hi, B.
See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Setting permissions for disks, folders, and files" which mentions the specific lock you note in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel.
That lock is used in cases where you are not authorized to change the permissions on the specific object whose Get Info window is open. For example, the Home folder of another user. If you cannot make selections in the pop-up menus in the Details panel because they are unavailable or "greyed-out," clicking the lock and making changes would then prompt you for an Admin account and password on that Mac to authenticate the changes.
    Good luck!

when I updated my mac mini to mountain lion it gave me an icon on my desktop of a hard drive, can I delete this?

Open the General tab of the Finder's preferences and set it not to be displayed on the desktop. Alternatively, if it's a disk image or external disk, just drag it to the Trash.

I recently brought a HD PVR, i put in the disk to install the hard drive and it said " This program doesn't support DOS Mode! how do i get out of DOS Mode?? Please Help

What exactly are you trying to do? PVRs are for recording from TV not computers.
Either way, if it's complaining about DOS mode, it's Windows oriented software and not Mac compatible.

i am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty.  Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits.  Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.
