Apple changed my Apple ID to the email address associated with my iTunes account. I now can no longer access my account because the old user name is no longer valid and has no password. I have been on the phone with tech support for hours trying to fix this. I can not update any of the apps associated with that user name.

Is this itunes on the iPad or on my computer? Thank you for the reply.

• JWSDP 1.6 Installations stalls for hours

Hi,
As a newbie to web services, I wanted to try out web services. And so, I downloaded the Java Application Server ver 8.1 and JWSDP 1.6. Installation for the Application Server was smooth. However, this was not so for the JWSDP 1.6. After waiting for hours and hours (installation stalled at 98% stating 'Please wait while the technologies are integrated into the Web Container. This may take 5 minutes or more'), nothing happened. Why is this so? Is there anything else that must be installed before installing the JWSDP? So far I had been waiting for 7 hours and still nothing. So much for 5 minutes! Thanks in advance!

Hi I have seen the same behavior, did you ever find a work around?
Thanks in advance,
Ernie

• I am trying to update to OS X 10.5.8, but the progress bar has stalled for hours.

I've tried restarting the update but it just goes back to the progress that it achieved before and then stalls again indefinitely. How can I completely restart the update and this time get it to complete it without stalling?

Just to add to BD's good advice:
Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Executable Jar? - Googled for hours, tried many solns, still doesn't work!

I am fairly new to Java, and I'm just simply trying to create an executable jar that will run when I double-click on the icon.
I have created my very basic program that uses java swing on Netbeans. I have right-clicked on the project, selected properties, and checked the packaging section to make sure that it creates a jar file. I also selected compress jar file, which some tutorial told me to do as well. (I've also tried not checking compress jar file to see if it made a difference... it didn't).
I then went to folder options to make an association with the jar file to javaw.exe so that when I clicked on the icon, it would know to use javaw.exe to open it. When I double click on the jar file, it now just makes the error noise and nothing happens. Before I made the assocation, it would open up ultimatezip which would show me the original source code, the class file, and the manifest.mf file.
In any event, I'm just playing around with creating an executable jar file and any advice on how to make it so that the GUI launches when I double click on it would be extremely helpful.

Thanks for your prompt response. I just tried your suggestions. 1 & 2 both worked for me. I have fiddled around some more with my file association and have looked at several sites that go through it step-by-step and I have tried them all. I went to tools, folder options, and I have changed the association to javaw.exe
I just can't figure out what's wrong.Good. So at least you know that it is the file type association that is not working correctly.
On my Windows PC, when I edit the open Action for .jar files, the command string is
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1" %*Maybe that will help. Of course, the path to your javaw.exe may be different.

• TS1963 Migration is stuck on "looking for other computers" . I am uploading from an external hard drive.  Why is it searching for other computers and why is it stuck there for hours?

My computer is Stuck at "looking for other computers" while trying to Upload from an external hard drive using migration assistant.

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
Thanks for the quick reply!

• Why is iphone getting stuck, for hours, @ "syncing notes" & never moving on

Please help this ignorant! When syncing, I can not get my iphone/itunes to move past "syncing notes." I've allowed it to work at it for more than 5 hours!
I have the latest update, I have restarted phone and computer, I have switched cord, I have moved to the back USB port, I have unplugged other extra USB items AND I have deleted all of my notes!
What do I try next?

• I keep getting different errors when i try to upgrade why? i have been 5 hours trying to figure out this ? im soo freaked

help please.
im on firmwere 4.3.5 im trying to go up to 5.0...

Windows 7 includes DirectX 11 in its baseline and it is not necessary to install another version of it.  Your problems may be caused by the installation of the version of DirectX you installed.  Uninstall the one you installed and see if you
still have the errors.

• Why the lack of support for icloud, wi-fi sync, splashtop, etc. in 10.5???

Does anyone know why there is a frustrating growing list of features that aren't supported in 10.5??
Is there a legitimate technical limitation of 10.5 that prevents these services from working, or is it simply apple's passive-aggressive push to make me pay to upgrade to a newer OS?
btw - it should be false advertising that icloud is "free with iOS5" because it's not free if you have iOS5 and 10.5, you have to PAY to upgrade to a new operating system even though 10.5 is only 2 or 3 years old. Windows STILL supports XP for almost everything, and these days PC users have better access to the full range of iOS5 features that involve interfacing with itunes than Mac 10.5 users...
just sayin' - that's some serious bs...

Post to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you are unhappy.  This is just a user to user forum.
In the meantime, read this tip and find out if the features you desire are still available under 10.5:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2551
If not, many other webhosts exist on http://www.comparewebhosts.com/ and the software Chronosync many of the same features, if not with as user friendly an interface.

• Hi am having problem syncing my iphone 3GS to my pc. It keeps showing backing up step 1 of 4 and run for hours and not sync. I have restarted my pc many times plugged and unplugged my iphone and it does not work at all.

I have been having trouble syncing my iphone after updating version 10. Satus keeps showing backing up step 1 of 4 forever on my pc. I have tried re plugging and restarting my pc but none work so far. I have not been able to sync my iphone since. Help!? Pls

Thanks for the stellar reply gdgmacguy.  I had no idea the AppleID used to purchase the device was forever tied to it.  Great to know.
May I add another layer of complexity to the issue?  I plan on buying her the iPhone 4S for Christmas.  Assumed all I would have to do is sync the new phone to iTunes on her pc and all her data/apps/music/pictures would transfer over.
Can I use her new account when I sync the 4S for the first time or will it prompt me for mine?
Thanks again.

• Why do I get Error (-50) when trying to sync my songs to my new 4S?

All my songs are at 128kbps except for the ones that I've recently purchased (most are ripped). If I "convert to AAC file" it will set the song up as 256kbps and it will then sync. 99% of my songs are already in AAC format but only at 128kbs. Why do I need to convert the file to a 256 file for it to be able to convert? I really dont want to have to do that for my 5000 songs.

• I have now spent 2 full hours trying to sync Firefox on my desktop pc and my android phone. Won't work, even as I have followed every instruction correctly.

I went to FIREFOX, SET UP SYNC. I created a new account (email address, password twice, checkbox for Terms & Privacy, anti-robot box). On a separate tab, a screen appeared with the message "Set up complete!" I closed that tab, then went to the pc's PAIR A DEVICE screen, entered the code which appeared on my phone's SET UP FIREFOX SYNC screen, then hit NEXT. The phone immediately showed activity (an animated horizontal box), along with the message "Waiting for other device".... After 7 minutes, the phone defaulted back to the SET UP FIREFOX SYNC screen with a new code in the 3 boxes, and the pc defaulted back to the SET UP SYNC screen with 2 buttons, SET UP SYNC and PAIR A DEVICE. Somewhere in the above process (I can't recall exactly where...), the pc asked me for a RECOVERY KEY -- which I could not find anywhere, neither on the phone nor on the pc. I repeated ALL of the above at least 5 times, always with the same non-result. Somewhere in the instructions, it described a "Manage acct." button for Sync accts. -- NO SUCH BUTTON APPEARS ANYWHERE, neither on the pc nor the phone. My specs.: Firefox 15.0.1 on pc, Firefox 16.0 on phone...... phone is Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000...... Android version: 4.0.4....... I'm very good at following instructions, but the Firefox Sync help pages describe buttons which do NOT appear on my devices and recovery codes which do NOT appear anywhere. Please, please help -- so much time invested already, so much frustration..... Thx.

When you open the desktop sync page (Tools > options > sync) does it look like the image below? If it does not then sync is not setup on the desktop computer.
If that looks similar then the other half would be to get an [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jtb.alogcat&hl=en aLogcat] log from your device when attempting to pair the device. Following the directions at http://160.twinql.com/how-to-file-a-good-android-sync-bug

• I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
'''Create a new Firefox profile'''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
firefox.exe -P
''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
Can it reach the internet?
When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.
