Why is my Illustrator CS2 v12.0 MAC suddenly freezing during initialization?

I've been using Illustrator CS2 v12.0 MAC on my Mac running on OSX v10.4.11 daily for years. I stopped using Illustrator for a few months, and when I went to use it again, it won't open; it hangs up during initialization. (The initialization window reads "Initializing...", then "Reading fonts...", then "Initializing..." again, and stays there forever.) I realize my version of Illustrator is out of date, but I didn't think it could just die of old age. Can anybody help?

I have PhotoShop Elements 4.0, and, yes, it opens and runs just fine.
No, I haven't installed any new fonts since I last opened
Illustrator. I suppose a corrupt font is possible, but I really doubt
it -- mainly because of the following: I know this is about
Illustrator, but I think it's important to mention that, at the same
time, I stopped using InDesign, and when I went to use it again, it
asks me for my serial number, and then tells me that the number I
provided is not valid (as I said, I've I've been using it daily for
years. I think it's important because this notice is in the InDesign
forum section: "Attention Mac Users: The recent Acrobat 8.2 update is
causing problems for many users of InDesign and Illustrator. If you
suddenly have problems starting InDesign, please see this KB article:
InDesign and Illustrator CS or CS2 fail to launch after applying the
Mac OS X Acrobat update." The same notice is in the Illustrator forum
section. That article it references describes exactly the same
behavior for both apps as I've been seeing. But I don't have Acrobat.
I feel sure that these problems started with an Adobe Reader update.
But I have no idea how to fix it; Adobe doesn't mention Reader. I
found a complete download of Reader 9.2, and so I replaced my Reader
9.3.3 with it, hoping that v9.2 wouldn't have whatever the problem
is. No such luck. (Sorry about not noticing the beard. I never said I
was alert.)

  • Can't get Illustrator CS2 for Mac to start up/open

    Hello Everyone,
My Illustrator Cs2 for Mac was working great, but now it won't open start-up.
It begins to open when the window for the software startup opens, it begins to initialize, it begins to load fonts, but then it gets 'hung up' when it says "12.0.1 Initializing...Created by the Adobe Illustrator Team". In my dock it says that the "application is not responding" and it never resolves to completely load the software.
I enclose a screenshot to show you what I'm on about.
I have Mac OS X.4.11, a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, IGB of memory and 15 GB of hard disk space. Every other software on the laptop works well and I have no other problems.
Is anyone familiar with this or does anyone know what I should do?
    Thanks
    martin

Have you updated to Acrobat 8.2?

I was having the same issues and this fixed it.

  • Cut/Paste from Word to Illustrator CS3 for Mac suddenly not working

This issue regards Illustrator CS3 for Mac on a Mac Pro with 6 GB.
Exactly one week ago I created a number of Illustrator files by cutting charts from a Word 2008 document and pasting them into an Illustrator document.
In the past I have dragged the images (or clip art) or simply used Control-C or even Control-X, but by whatever method I opted for, getting the image from Word to Illustrator CS3 has not been a problem.
Yesterday I got a new chart and a request to replace an old image - one that I had created last week on Tuesday by the Drag/Drop or Cut/Paste method.   For reasons I can't begin to imagine the process simply won't work now.
I also find that if I simply select text in a Word Document, hit Ctrl-C and then try a Ctrl-V in Illustrator I don't get to see my text pasted in - ONLY if I already have a text block open and the cursor in place will I get to see the text copied over into Illustrator.  This is very strange and not at all how things have worked in the past - typically I would see the new Text Object just appear, and then I could move it to wherever I wanted.
I have opened up a number of old files that I know were created with copied text and also opened the associated Word files (earlier versions of Word) and again find that I can't copy text over, or even move images over - even though I clearly could do this before.  I have also tried entirely new files - also with no success.
I was at an Apple one-to-one session this morning and they were more than mystified by this.  I can Cut and Paste into Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can't even cut and paste from Adobe Photoshop Elements into Illustrator CS3.   I can drag the Photoshop file (from the Finder window) into the Illustrator document and poof - get my image that way, but it's as an image only.  If the base image in question is a vector image or something else having a plurality of elements, I can't then select the elements in Illustrator to change their color, delete them, or otherwise play with them.
I have brought up a word document on another Mac system that also has Illustrator CS3 and find that it too can't drag/drop cut/paste between the two applications.   At Apple, we did confirm that such ability is operational in the new Illustrator CS4, but none of their store systems still have CS3 to provide yet a third system to test.
I have deleted my Illustrator CS3 preferences, tried flushing the p-ram, and of course run fix and repair permissions - no dice.
My Mac systems update daily and there is nothing in the main update log that shows anything for Adobe or Office (nor do I think there should be).  Adobe Update reports that everything is up to date, and I don't see a history file to know what might have changed in the last week.   Office also reports fully up to date and happy.
As I can cut and paste the images into an email for Mail and into Photoshop, I am fairly certain that it is NOT a Microsoft Office 2008 issue.  The fact that another Mac with Illustrator CS3 also can't cut and paste suggests that is is really not something personal to my main system.
It is almost as if this is some clandestine "update" intended to encourage me to buy Illustrator CS4.  Given that I bought Illustrator CS3 less than a year ago, I really am not eager to buy the new version.   The greeting on the Adobe Support page that CS3 is no longer the current version and therefore supported was most annoying.
I am really hoping that someone out there has an idea of what to try changing, removing and/or adjusting with respect to Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I tried the Select by Path option - can't believe I missed it - and found it made no difference.
I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app.  When I tried to simply re-install (can't remember it's exact phrase) it got part way through and then demanded another disk - but I only have one DVD with the application - the extra DVD is for tutorials and it didn't accept that one either.  So I restarted that process and chose to completely uninstall.  Then reinstalled - hey with only my one disk - gee, just like the first time.   And then it seemed to work.
I was not aware of the save as PDF option - but yes I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac so that option is there - and it seems to work too.
There were of course a slue of updates, and I let them all proceed - but even with them all in place the system is fine and I can once again drag and drop / cut and paste things back and forth.   I just tried a text block and "The Quick Brown Fox" pasted in with a clipping mask about 10 times the size of the document, but other than that it was ok.
So I have things working again on my primary system.   Will try and figure out what's wrong with the other one - but a reinstall might be the easiest game there too.

  • Illustrator CS2 on mac won't launch

    Hi,
I am unable to open Illustrator! I am running Mac Os X 10.5.6 and get this message: Could not complete the requested operation.
All other Adobe programs open and this is native CS2 ie no upgrades or added stuff.
Have called Adobe and tried the trashing preferences and creating a new user account options, which did nothing. Also tried the font problem, and found the fonts were not the problem.
Any help, ideas on how to fix would be greatly appreciated
    Thanku in advance,
    Belinda

    Belinda,
Before you do, there may be a few other things to try:
    1) Install updates;
    2) Reinstall Acrobat;
    3) Move all non system fonts out of the Font folder (or whatever it is called on a Mac); if that solves the issue, move them back in bundles until you find the corrupt one(s);
If that does not help either, I will have a further look.
You can always reinstall Illy without involving Adobe.
When you have everything working smoothly, whatever it takes, you may consider Maxtor Maxblast or something similar to preserve everything and be able to recreate everything.

  • Illustrator CS2 with Mac OSX 10.5.8

So sorry, but I made a mistake in my posting before....I'm running CS2, and not CS3, as I originally thought.
Once again, does anybody know if there are compatibility issues between CS2 and OSX 10.5.8??
I am currently working with CS2 applications on my iMac G5 PowerPC, running OSX 10.4.11
I have a good opportunity to purchase and install an upgrade to OSX 10.5.5. I then plan to use Apple's Software Update to bring it up to the most current version of the OS, whidh I think is 10.5.8
My only concern is whether switching to the more current OS will affect my use of CS3 applications in any way...
    (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge)
Does anybody know the answer to this?

    I've got CS2 installed with OS10.5.8.
I don't use CS2 heavily anymore, but it does launch and has performed some basic operations for me just fine.

  • Why did my downloads to my Mac suddenly stop opening up after downloading?

I bought a MacBook Pro about a week ago and everything has been going great!  Once I got past the Photoshop serial number issue, editing photos has been amazing compared to the pc I was using prior.  I was able to download my add-ons and everything was working until all of a sudden when I went to download more photoshop software, my downloads stopped opening up.  It is not just the downloads from a certain source, it is any download, .dmg and pse.  Any ideas??  Thank you!!

Gwenmary considering that you were previously receiving messages to input a serial number it sounds like you are facing connectivity difficulties.  I would recommend completing the steps in Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CC, CS6, CS5.5 - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-network-issues.html to allow you to download and activate the Adobe Creative software included with your membership.

  • Mac Mini freezes during log out

    Hello everyone,
I have a Mac Mini among many other MACs, all running 10.5.8. It has two accounts: an Admin and a user one.
A couple of weeks ago, I encountered a quite disturbing _freeze on this machine only_: each time I try to logout from the user account, the desktop disappears, followed with a blue screen and a rotating dial; after a while the rotating dial stops and the computer freezes. The only workaround so far is to hard reboot the Mac.
I run Onyx 2.0.5 systematically; nothing seems to be wrong.
I have carried out such a logout every week for maintenance purposes, since the machine was bought early 2008; I never faced this problem until recently. I did not install any additional software in the meantime, although I keep the existing ones up-to-date. Also note that the user account does not freeze if I just turn the Mac Mini off from the menu bar.
Any ideas welcome, before I consider rebuilding the whole system.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

To whom it may concern, I finally fixed the problem.
I use a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse on the Mac Mini. It seems that the Logitech Control Center 3.1 interacts poorly with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now that I have disabled LCCDaemon in the start-up items of all users, I can logout from any session seamlessly. In addition, it appears that login is faster than before.
I hope that it helps someone else!

  • Why does my HSDIO board drive all lines high during initialization?

I've got two NI PCI-6541 boards that execute the following LabVIEW pseudo-code.
    for i = 0 to 1
       Execute these VIs:
       niHSDIO Init Generation Session.vi
       niHSDIO Assign Dynamic Channels.vi
       niHSDIO Configure Sample Clock.vi
       niHSDIO Export Signal.vi
       niHSDIO Configure Generation Mode.vi
       niHSDIO Export Signal.vi
       niHSDIO Configure Generation Repeat.vi
       Set these properties:
       ExportedSampClk.Mode
       SampClk.Impedance
       RefClk.Impedance
       SampClk.Rate
       Execute these VIs:
niHSDIO Write Named Waveform (1D U32).vi
       niHSDIO Write Script.vi
       niHSDIO Get Session Reference.vi
    Execute these VIs:
    niTClk Configure For Homogeneous Triggers.vi
    niTClk Synchronize.vi
    niTClk Initiate.vi
For some reason, the first VI called (niHSDIO Init Generation Session.vi) sets all my DIO board's outputs to high. They are not set correctly until the last VI (niTClk Initiate.vi) is run.
How do I make this not happen?

    Hi bmihura -
Have you tried calling niHSDIO Reset Device or setting the "reset instrument" input on the niHSDIO Init Generation Session VI to TRUE?   I believe this will tri-state the lines for you.

  • Illustrator CS2 quits at startup

    I'm using Illustrator CS2 for Mac, v10.4.
I believe the problem may be with the fonts that need to be activated for Illustrator to open, b/c it quits as the program is starting up as it's cycling thru the fonts in the activation window. It stalls for a few seconds and quits after Apple Gothic comes up, but I don't think that font is a problem. It may be another font that I may have inadvertently deactivated in my font utility recently (but can't remember which would cause this).
I've reinstalled Illustrator, repaired permissions, and removed the .plist preference, but it still won't start.
    Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thansk, johndziner

Fixed it myself after noticing a similar message thread on the forum.
I deleted the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings folder and the com.illustrator.plist from the User/Library/Preferences folder. Put them on the desktop first then restarted Illustrator. Worked fine. Then trashed the old settings and .plist file---Illustrator will generate new ones at startup.

  • Illustrator cs2 plugin code???

    Hi all,
I m trying to develop a plugin that loads in illustrator cs2 on mac os...
It would be helpful if anyone of you could provide me the code of any plugin which would build on my system...just to get an idea of how it works...
    I m using:
    MAC OS X 10.4.3
CodeWarrior pro version 8.3/8.0 (or) Xcode 2.5
    Illustrator CS2
Someone pls help... Or i just want to know if it is possible to develop a plugin with these specifications...I know that we can develop plugins with codewarrior 9.4 but thats not available right now.. I tried converting the codewarrior 9.4 sample codes into xcode using the codewarrior 8.3 as the pdf said so.. that only gives errors.. Someone suggest something..pls..
    thanks..

AIDocumentSuite::GetDocumentFileSpecification() should get you that information. Note that it will only work properly if you've already saved the document (or opened it from a file). I'm not sure what the result looks like if you're calling that on a new, unsaved file.

  • Why does my Mac keep freezing with shortcuts in CS6?

    Currently here's the situation
I'm on an OSX Lion machine (10.7.4) with 7GB of memory.
I have the following shortcuts in Illustrator:
    Cmd +Shift + = : To export a file
Cmd +3 : Select the same fill color
Cmd + 4: Select the same stroke color
    Cmd + . : Rotate
    Cmd + , : Reflect an object
It doesn't matter which shortcut it is what will happen is that Illustrator and my Mac will freeze up not allowing me to force quit the program. This will happen randomly and the only way around it is to restart the mac and restore default preferences via Cmd + Option + Shift when opening the program.
I have tried re-installing the suite and it still happens, so I'm wondering is it the specific shortcuts I am using or is it the computer? I only ask because Illustrator has no issues when everything is defaulted, however when I add the shortcuts this issue will happen.
    Thank you in advance.

Is it just these custom shortcuts that are crashing the machine, or any shortcut?
What did you do the the exisitng shorcuts, did you disabel them. (eg: CMD 3 is hide).
You may want to try using Fkeys instead for your custom shortcuts, you just want to check the :Usea ALL F1, F2, etc.

  • How to develop a simple plugin for adobe illustrator cs2 using xcode on mac os

I would like to know the steps to develop a simple plug-in for adobe illustrator cs2 using xcode on mac OS...anything like a dialog box displaying "hello World"... I m new to MAC OS...Please help...
    Thanks in advance

Get the SDK and start playing with the sample plug-ins. Asking for something as general as "how do I get started" is asking a little much from this forum :) Try your hand at the SDK and come back to ask more specific questions as you run into them.
Bear in mind that this isn't an Xcode forum either, though I'm sure there are places to get good help on that!

  • Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally?

I hope I'm submitting this properly, I apologize if this irritates anyone because of improper etiquette. Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally? This is a condition which seemed to start just recently and abruptly. These applications reside on, and are launched from the startup drive, not from a network drive. Also, we have a NAS drive on the LAN that we connect to that also takes a minute or two to mount, when it used to (before this problem) mount on the desktop in a matter of about 5 seconds. We have three identical Mac Pros on the LAN, and they all have this problem when launching and using the above mentioned applications. When I physically unplug the network cable from the Mac, all applications launch instantly and function normally. I know very little about networks, so I can't begin to test or change any setting pertaining to our network - if that is where the problem lies. The only recent change to our network situation is that we lost or our internet and phone service due to massive flooding here in Minot, North Dakota (our ISP tells us the communication lines are under water and shorting out). But shouldn't our LAN still function even though we have lost our connection to the outside world? Thanks so much, in advance, for helping me solve this problem. Sheldon.

    Hi there.
A slow LAN can have many things so its going slow.
    1) is your lan 1gbit speed? (full duplex)
    2) are the macs also 1Gbit speed? (full duplex)
    3) does your nas has a firewall? (so you can see what the mac asking there)
    4) on the macs is the firewall on? (does the programms can pass the fw?)
    5) how big is the nas and how many files/dirctorys are on the nas? (big folders speeds down )
many questions, but sometimes there is a solution.
    regards tim
