Why is my imac shutting down by itself?

I have a late 2010 27in iMac and it has shut down randomly by itself 4 times in the last month or so, including twice in the last couple of days. I have 16G of RAM and am only using up to 8G ever. Just to be clear, it shuts down and does not restart automatically. I never have the screen brightness higher than half so I don't believe I am overheating it? I really want to know why this keeps happening.

Have you tried wiggling the AC power cord at both the wall socket (or surge protector bar)? You may possibly have a bad socket. Is anything else also plugged into the same surge protector preferably something that would stay off if its AC was interrupted. A light would not do since it could just barely flicker while that interruption would shut off the computer.
You may want to try it on a differnet AC power circuit. This would be a different breaker (or fuse) circuit from the one you are normally on. Is the AC outlet or circuit running on a ground fault interruptor protected circuit and if so, does the GFI trip? Coul;d it be reset by someone else if it is not right at your desk area?
Does this happen when you are using the computer or when it is just idling?
Is your preference setting to NOT start after a power interruption? You may want to, just for the heck of it, toggle this setting (In Energy Saver) on and off to see if it will result in a restart? If so, start looking more deeply at AC power problems.
Is there any particular program you are using when this happens?
Are you on some type of network where someone else could be getting control of your system? (Apple remote Desktop allows this kind of action.) If so, updates may have been remotely installed which will cause a restart or shut down if that is chossen by the remote administrator.
Has everything been fully updated? Some updates will shut the computer off for a restart. This is especially true for EFI type updates. This usually results in a restart which is not what you said was happening. Instead you got a shut down to a cold start. If that is the case then the updates are not the cause of your problem.
It is also possible that you could have a power supply failing. Are you still under three year AppleCare? If so give them a call to put the problem on record in case it develops to whare you need hardware repairs.

Why does my IMac shut down five minutes after start up?

I have a 21" Imac, purchased 2010. If I don't login to a user account within five minutes of start up the IMac shuts down. It used to go to a sleep mode.
My OS is Mavericks, 10.9.3. I also have the latest security update. A message comes on the start screen within one minute. It reads, if you are having trouble entering your password press the start button to shut down, then press again to enter a recovery OS. If I login within 5 minutes of start all is well.

OK - i'm going to type this as quickly as possible before the problem occurs again and I have to type this again.
I bought a Revision B Imac last July. In November, it started to turn off by itself for no reason. (it wouldn't shut down - it would just turn off). It did it about 5 times in the one day, sometime it would be on for a couple of hours before doing it, others it would only last the minute. But by the end of the weekend, it stopped doing it. It started again a couple of weeks later, then once again stopped. I never took it into apple because I know what their support is like, and I know that the problem most likely wouldn't occur when the tech was looking at it. I might not have any problems for more than a month, then suddenly, it would start again. Well today, it has started again. It's done it about 10 times already. It does it when it's on idlle as well as when I'm actually using it. I guess my question is, how many other people have experienced this problem? Just wondering if apple would be aware of it happening to other people.
Just on another note - I didn't think these screens got screen burn. Just noticed the last time my computer was starting up that the outline of the dock has been burned into my screen. I'm kind of annoyed by it.

We have 3 G5 imacs bought June/July 05. In early December one of them started to turn off by itself for no reason. (as Kjays it wouldn't shut down - it would just turn off). It did it about 5 times a day, sometime it would be on for a several hours before doing it, others it would go while starting up. We ran the diagnostic disc but it could find nothing wrong .We reset pram with no effect. The problem persisted for over a week so we booked it into Microwarehouse (where it was purchased) for repair but then it stopped doing it so we cancelled the repair because they said they would charge if they could find nothing wrong.
It was fine for a couple of weeks but it has now started again.
We have also changed the power lead, and taken the disc off the end etc as suggested with no effect.
The serial no W8524xxxxxx is just outside the W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx list on Apples website within which a recognized problem is occurring
I'm worried about booking it in for repair because as usual I suspect that the problem won't occur when a technician is looking at it.
Anyone have have any suggestions or update on Apples response in store ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

After installing 7.3 last night, I hit restart and went to bed. My intel iMac i7 3.4ghz was powered down this morning, and only after unplugging,waiting, rep plugging,
It finally powered on, only to boot to the gray apple screen, go black and silent. (this exact issue had me lugging it back to apple a month after purchase, today is 93 days)
Recovery mode got me about one second further in bottling up before shutting off.
I was forced to upgrade from an unproblematic pc g5, after iCloud, so do not own snow leopard and was told I would never need a re install disc.
Has anyone having the powering off during boot after updating to 7.3?

omg. I would copy and paste your original post to the iMac section. You're talking about a fine piece of equipment, the Intel iMac i7 3.4ghz , and you should not be having such problems. Maybe others in the iMac i7 community might also have some ideas.
Re: the safe boot. That's good that it worked. This is fairly new and very, very helpful with a dead computer because at least you can get to Safari, get to the Internet and get ideas and seek help.
But why did it shut off after a while? That's not right. No reason it should have done that.
From something you said I would worry about your power supply problem or this PerIphrEa. I don't know what that is but Migration is built into Lion OS, no? Third party perificials (or apps) can certainly cause conflicts and not work as well as advertised.
Also, seriously, I would get some tape, like duct tape, and tape up that loose power supply.
Why do you need something extra for your migration? (Or is the reason your old PowerPC G5 needs to run Lion but it can't?).
If that is the problem, here's an idea. Continue the canibalization of your PowerPC G5, take out it's hard drive(s). Buy an 'enclosure' to put the hard drive in and allow you to connect this hard drive to your new machine, the beautiful iMac i7, using the old hard drive as an external drive.

Re:What is the proper amount of time the computer needs to be unplugged? This would worry me. I turn off my comuter NOT by unplugging it but by holding the power on button for about 3-4 seconds and then it turns off.
I then wait 5 long seconds before pressing the power on button again to turn the computer back on.
Having to plug in and unplug and plug in and having to wait ten minutes for it to work is not normal.
Is there a power supply issue in your home, perhaps?
Considering the value of this machine and the fact that it may still be under warrenty, I'd consider the weeklong diagnostic. Would the machine have the same need to wait ten minutes to turn on at the Apple place?
What if you plug it in at a friend's house, or an office or library? Would it still take ten minutes before you could turn the machine on?
It might seem horrible to have to wait a week...or to do this again and again but I'd recommend taking full advantage of your warrenty, keep sticking this problem back to Apple and insist it gets made right. It will be worth it in the long run.

First check System Preferences - Energy Saver - Schedule and see if someone accidentally scheduled shut offs. If that is unchecked then you probably have a power issue, get your power and plugs checked where the machine is located, if the machine is on a UPS and the power issue is cause by your wiring or power company then the UPS can at least make it easier on teh system so it can do orderly shutdowns.
If the power checks out OK then run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode at least 3x, if errors appear you have verified a hardware problem and need to take the machine in for repair. Don't ask what the codes mean, Apple does not publish that information. AHT is not the most reliable test but it's what you have, if it doesn't report errors that does not rule out a hardware issue, meaning you should still take it in to be checked by your local Apple Store or AASP.

When it shuts down, the screen blanks (more like turns grey, like the color of the background when on the log in screen). It reboots immediately, so at first the problem was presumed to be restarting, not shutting down and powering back on. The computer is usually very warm, and definitely gets hot easily. A test was run determine when the fan would turn on to start cooling the computer by running digits of Pi, and the tester concluded it was too close within the safe temperatures before it would permanently affect the computer. (I believe this was within 5ºF, but I am not 100% sure.) The times when it will turn off and reboot do not seem coorelated with much if anything. It has done this at multiple times, among running varying amounts of programs and for different lengths of time: right after logging into the user, within a minute of after it has turned off and rebooted, within 5 minutes, 10, 30, even 60 minutes of turning off and rebooting, when only running one program such as Firefox, when running various programs such as Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes....
Basically, it makes no sense.

Why does my MBP 13" 2012 screen shuts down by itself?

The screen of my MBP 13" shuts down by itself, more and more often. It does not happen in a specific situation, and the laptop continues running and receiving inputs. In order to reactivate the screen I have to open and close it several times, or press the power button.
The screen turns completely back and the led outside start blinking like when I close the laptop.
The MBP is new, bought in summer 2012 and does not have any other program installed than the standard ones. I have no idea why this happens but it is occurring more and more.

You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.

Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

IMac shuts down itself (or log off) when I leave it even if working

My iMac shuts down itself when I leave it for a few minutes even if working, just as example, when rendering a movie. Every time I leave the computer for more than 30 minutes, I come back and I find the first screen. (actually I don't know if the iMac shuts down or just log off)

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are two levels of sleep, Display Sleep and Computer Sleep.
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver > and set Computer Sleep to Never and Display to Sleep after 10 or 15 minutes. That way the Computer will stay awake, but the Display will Sleep if your not sitting there doing something on it.
Also if you want to disable the password after Computer Sleep, go to System Preferences > Security > General and uncheck the Require password box.

Why is Mozilla shutting down bt itself. I seem to happen about every 24 hours. It just shuts down for no reason and has to be re-started.

What exactly happens and do you get any error messages ?
Is it the whole computer that shuts down or just the Firefox browser ?
Quite a few possible reasons but two are
# The computer overheats.
# You run out of memory
If your computer has a variable speed fan you will probably note that running at high speed, if you are in danger of overheating. Software is available that will monitor and check temperatures. Dust build up or obstructed ventilation are possible causes, & probably noticeable if watching videos.
Firefox or the computer may crash in some circumstances if there is no more available RAM memory or HDD space. That is probably more likely to cause a Firefox crash rather than the whole computer crashing.

My phone has been shutting down by itself. Why is it doing that?

My Iphone has been shutting down by itself and its not keeping a charge either i use to keep battery life until at least the end of the day, thatas even when I close out my apps. Even Siri start talking on its own. Whats the reason for all this?

The iPhone can shut down by itself when the battery is too low. Don't know if you have a malfunction that is running continuously and as such draining the battery ...or if you just have a warn out battery.
