Why is my iMac so dodgy?

My imac has got slower and slower over the last year. Today it refused to start up so I kept forcing it to turn off and re-starting until it eventually started. Another problem is that since installing Mavericks, the only way I can use Safari is to start it, close it and start it again. If I don't do this, I don't get any tabs although I can navigate to other sites in the window that starts up.
I'm running Mavericks 10.9.2.
As per an entry on a forum, I ran disk utility and verified the drive for the imac, getting a green ok.
I've also run the etresoft gizmo and got a report with red writing just about the need for a bigger back-up disk. I'd like to post the report here but can't work out how to do this.
Any help will be much appreciated - though as I'm non technical, plese keep it simple.

When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..

Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

Is the slowness limititd to some sites?
Slow choppy web video is the most common complaint, and there is not much you can do about that. The newer video technology is optimized for Intel processors. That aren't many G4 friendly vidoe web sites around any more.

Why will my IMAC only print the full document in half a page? All updated IOS downloads. My Laptop Mac does not do this, so I feel it is not the printer, but the actual computer. The full document is printed, it is just half a page, other half is blank. This is presenting a huge problem for school and also when I need to print a shipping label ( which I do often) for my business. I have several printers and it performs the mistake on all of them. Ok, I solved it.
I followed this steps:
1- Turn Off Wi-Fi from the Wireless menu item
2- From the OS X Finder, hit Command+Shift+G and enter the following path:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
3- Within this folder locate and select the following files:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
 com.apple.network.identification.plist
com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist 
NetworkInterfaces.plist 
preferences.plist
4- Move all of these files into a folder on your Desktop called ‘wifi backups’ or something similar – we’re backing these up just in case you break something but if you regularly backup your Mac you can just delete the files instead since you could restore from Time Machine if needed.
5- Reboot the Mac
6- Turn ON WI-Fi from the wireless network menu again

Checked.... the settings had not been inadvertently changed, but I did move the scroll and reset them back to the original. Hasn't shut off again.... yet. Will re-post with follow-up one way or the other. Thanks.

Why is my iMac hyperactive?

Again I ask, "Why is my iMac hyperactive?" My iMac scrolls a-little all on its own, that is with _zero_ input by me. Maybe my Apple Magic Mouse is just _too_ magic?
Here at this Very Window, my iMac scrolled all on its own. (Please trust me.) Get Back Here!

OK, something else then...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

When it goes full screen try moving the mouse up to top right of scren & see if there a double diagonal Arrow to click on.
On the other see if it's the silly implentation of Spaces/Mission Control/Expose in ML...

Just updated details - os x 10.8.5 .....
found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time. I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..

Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it. I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer. have a great day.

Check System Preferences > Energy Sacer > Schedule
And try disconnecting all periphals except for the keyboard and mouse.
