WHY is my iMac so slow now? Especially Safari?

Hey
Please please someone help me, i have had my iMac now for two and a half years and its always been fine. Its got 4gb ram and 500gb hard drive.
All of a sudden it just started to slow down, so much that everything freezes.
Safari is so slow especially when trying to playing YouTube videos, when i try and play them the whole machine just freezes!
I updated it to Lion and also took it into my local apple repair shop and they couldnt find anything wrong with it at all!
I transfered like 200gb of data onto an external, that didnt help, repaired permissions and that didnt help. I reset Safari and that didnt help.
Its got so bad that even when i search for something on my Mac e.g. if i type in INVOICE into spotlight search it takes abot 30 seconds to show me anything!
Please someone help, its mainly laggy on Safari 5.1.7 but the whole machine is effected by it!
Please help!

Linc Davis: I have a similar problem and followed your instructions, probably something to do with the Google Chrome issue but I don't know what it means, duh...this is my console text:

  • Why is my iMac so slow now?  Ever since I did the latest system update yesterday everything takes forever.

Ever since doing the recommended system update yesterday, my iMac has been e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y s-l-o-w.  I get a spinning beachball with every mouse click, even just clicking on a red dot to close a window.  Any suggestions?

    Try Applejack.
    Download:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/
    Article on using:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10334620-263.html?tag=mfiredir
It runs in single user mode. After installing (you won't see it in the Applications Folder) hold CMD-S at startup. You will get a black screen with MS-DOS like text. Just follow the prompts: type in "applejack AUTO" and it will run through the following:
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
You can also run tasks selectively and for specific users by typing in "applejack." After running in "AUTO,"  you can go back and run it again as "applejack," steps 3 & 4 only, for your user.
The first reboot will take much longer than usual, as it rebuilds caches. It may take several restarts to see the benefits. Because of the deep cache cleaning in AUTO mode some applications may tell you they are being opened for the first time.

Also, try applying the 10.6.8 Combo update.

  • Why is my iMac very slow to download Safari

I bought my iMac in Feb/12. It has run very well since then. All of a sudden in the last week, downloading Safari after turning on the computer takes a long time. Safari is downloading very slow and sluggish. Anything else I try to open after turning on computer also opens very slowly. I don't dare close Safari until I'm finished with computer now, because it will take forever to open it up again.
I was running Bitdefender on my computer before. Bitdefender doesn't work right, so I uninstalled it, but still have the program in my Applications area. Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down? Is some form of Adaware doing this? Before my iMac, I use to have a Windows XP computer, and I'd scan for viruses in a case like this, which would usually help. But Bitdefender on here did not work, and now I'm wondering what I should do? Where should I even start? Because this can't continue.  Please help!  Thanks

Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down?
Yes. Back up all data, then uninstall "Bitdefender" completely according to the developer's instructions -- NOT by dragging an application to the Trash or hunting for files by name.

  • Why is my mid 2007 iMac so slow now that I've loaded 10.9.4

Why is my mid 2007 iMac so slow now that I've loaded 10.9.4? Everything seems to be slow. It was quick enough on 10.4. I now have wireless connection issues, and wired keyboard connection issues?

Hi there - thanks. No, I haven't run anything like Clean My Mac - what would you suggest?

  • Why is my imac so slow browsing

why is my imac so unbelievably slow.I have a gig of ram?

"I have a gig of ram?"
What are the other specs? Processor speed? Free space on hard drive?
Is the slowness limititd to some sites?
Slow choppy web video is the most common complaint, and there is not much you can do about that. The newer video technology is optimized for Intel processors. That aren't many G4 friendly vidoe web sites around any more.

  • Why is my 2006 iMac so slow now with Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

    Hello,
I bought and installed Snow Leopard on my 2006 iMac so that i could use my new Lacie Minimus Drives for backup using Time Machine.
Since my install though the computer is slow and everything seems to take a long time to do. For instance, when i select one of the shortcuts in my bookmark bar i put the mouse icon over it and it takes 5 seconds for it to go dark grey so i can select it.
It's like it has a time delay on everything now. Everything is sooooo slow.
Also before i updated the OS there was this sound coming off the computer like it was doing something in the background, a sort of rustling/crinkling noise from the drive i think. When it makes this sound the computer will slow down and display that little spinning disc icon until the sound went away and then it would speed up again. This was another reason i wanted to wipe my drive and update my software. That sound is almost constant now.
I wanted to wipe my entire hard drive and install the Snow Leopard on a fresh new system. I usually do this once a year to get rid of any unwanted junk on my computer but i never realised that the Snow Leopard disc doesn't give you the option of 'Erase and Install'.
So, do i need to install Tiger with the 'Erase and Install' option, creating a fresh system, then install Snow Leopard and update it?
Also would installing new RAM improve my mac's performance? (MichelPM, thanks for your suggestion)
There's one on ebay made by Sandisk for sale at £30. It's 2GB and seems like the best option. It's listed below.
I have 1GB on board now so that would make it 3GB.
Would doing this get rid of these unwanted and very annoying sounds and time delays?
If i have to hear that rustling or see that little coloured disc for much longer i am going to lose it.
    Thanks for you time.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the help everyone.
First, i have all my data/files backed up on my older Lacie drives. New ones are still in their boxes.
Second, the noise with the disc. It's not a clicking sound. It's more like the drive is struggling to do something.
It's not continuous, It happens when opening up itunes or iphoto or another app. Or when i try to open up a page on Safari, the page will start to load, the noise will start and either the noise stops and the page loads or the page stalls and the sound continues and then i just hit reload or quit Safari depending on how annoyed i am at the time! It did do this before i updated to SL but it seems to be more and more now!
If i have Safari, iPhoto and Mail open all at once, it's like a battle over what get's done with the sound creaking away and the spinning icon all over the place.
How do i check my drive using Disk Utility? Do i 'verify' it? I have done it before but it was a long time ago.
I never did a clean install. I just put in SL and let it update, then i updated the software to 10.6.8.
I will do that when i get the new RAM however just to start afresh.
I have bought a 2GB Crucial RAM memory (Thanks RadiationMac) but do i need to buy another one now?
Also how would spotlight make noise?
Thank you. These forums are invaluable.

  • Why is my imac so slow especially with wifi connection

In order to recover wifi I have to restart machine and/or switch wifi off and on. Opening pages is very slow and am constantly waiting for a stammering crash.

It's likely the slow running and flaky wifi are two separate issues.
For the slow running, and just to rule out some known causes, are you running any anti-virus program - Norton, MacKeeper, Kaspersky, etc?
For the wifi issue here are some suggestions - wifi issues seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always - in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

  • Why is my iMac so slow and now it is locking up on me

My iMac is soooooooo sow and it just locked up on me. Screen went white and a folder with a question mark was flashing and would not do anything for at least 8 minutes.  I had to turn it off from the on/off switch and it took almost 10 minutes to turn back on.

    As Eric says...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Why is my iMac much slower after installing Mavericks. Windows open slowly and Apps load slowly.

Everything seems to be taking much longer. I have a late-2012 iMac with 32 GB of RAM that was blazing fast until I "upgraded" to Mavericks. Now everyithing is slow. Does it use more system resources? I would think that with that much RAM I would have plenty of headroom for the OS. Is anyone else experiencing this?

    Here's my suggestion:
    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    1. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
    2. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Re-download and reinstall Mavericks.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Why is my iMac running slow at startup?

I shut down my computer about once a week or so, because I hear that's good for it. But when I start it back up, I might as well go make coffee. If I try using it, all I get are beach balls and HD noise, even though there's 12 GB RAM free during all this , and the CPU is barely using 4%. I suppose it's disk activity? Here's my results from EtreCheck below; I notice Carbonite is still on my system, even though I've removed it. Time Machine is not configured because I use SuperDuper and BackBlaze. The Mac HD is brand new; the last one failed and Apple replaced it.
    Problem description:
Slow startup. 16 GB of RAM yet even during the slow startup, 12 GB are free. The CPU runs at 97% idle during the slow startup. What’s causing this?

  • Seems to be continuously indexing. Why i my iMac so slow?

I just loaded OS X Lion on my iMac, as well as Messenger beta. I can't see why these would affect the machine by indexing since it ran fine before. I have installed the same on both of my other macs with no problem.
It seems this one is indexing almost continously and everything is lagging. The spinning beach ball is a frequent visitor at this point too.
    Anyone...?

  • WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?

I have an iMac G5 and an Airport  Extreme base station.  I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier.  ...Whats's the deal?

    Hi,
If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

  • Why is the unlock so slow now?

For a week or so (i would guess it coincides with the latest iPod software update) my iPod has been slow to unlock after moving the slider. What used to be almost instant now takes 5-10 seconds. What is going on?
i've already reset the entire iPod and that did not fix it.
also, podcasts are getting lost since the update. they now show up under other in a category that's either blank or just called the wrong thing.
but the unlock is the worst. can anyone help me?

i've already reset the entire iPod and that did not fix it.
If you mean you restored the iPod, that is not the same as a reset.
Try resetting:  Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
You won't lose any data as a result of resetting your device.
