Why has my iMac started to be slow when first logging on, is it anything to do with me upgrading to Mavericks from 10.7, and is there any way it can be rectified?

  • Why does my imac start up in safe mode

hi, imac starts up in safe mode. not every time,  only when progress bar appears at startup.
I have had the Logic board replaced under warranty but it still started in safe mode.
sometimes when it has started the wifi symbol is missing and no wifi, other times the sound is not there and the symbol is missing on the top bar.
I then have to restart and it comes up good. sometimes the desktop top bar is not there until I press the mouse and then it appears.
don't know what to do, any Ideas anybody?

How often does this happen? Do you have automatic updating enabled in Software Update? If so, then it's possible those were firmware updates being installed, not startup in safe mode. In a safe mode startup you are initially prompted for your password before proceeding past login.
If a firmware update was happening then the computer will restart on its own. If you interrupt the process then the update isn't installed, so it will try again on the next restart.
Safe mode is initiated by holding down the SHIFT key at restart. It should not occur without user intercession.

  • Why is my iMac Start up SSD Drive filling up without any use?

I noticed yesterday that my main boot drive, my SSD drive, on my iMac was seriously depleting in memory without me doing anything or downloading anything either so much so that but 10pm last night it was saying my start up drive was full. I ran Disk Utility on the drive and it said I had a problem and should run in Recovery HD so rebooted the computer and ran it, it said it had fixed permissions so thought all was okay but after rebooting again the memory is still running down!
I also tried erasing the disk and using Time Machine as a back up from a previous time, this had no effect. I thought it could be a Snow Leopard update that came in yesterday but that doesn't seem to be the problem as I have used a back up from before I updated...
I'm literally watching the 'Used' numbers from the Get Info on my SSD drive go up infront of my eyes every few seconds.
Any help would be much appriciated!

In your Mountain Lion's Time Machine settings, you are now allowed to designate not just one only, but multiple Time Machine backup drives, though you don't have to.  I'm wondering if possibly your TM settings are backing up one of your internal hard drives both to your external hard drive AND to the internal SSD drive.  You might want to check to see if that is the case, and if so, change it.
    Hope this helps

  • Why has my iMac suddenly become very slow in waking up

Have not installed any new software recently but have just changed my ISP, suddenly my iMac takes nearly a minute to 'wake up' Mountain Lion installed when it first became available and it was fine after that. When it does wake up it is fine, not slow, and opens apps just as quick as before.

    Hi:
As I said, there are literally thousands of messages - most relate to specific configurations.
When those messages appear, does quite a bit of time elapse?
I Googled "ACE."  The only possibly relevant thing I could find is a description of Cisco networking software....

  • Why does my mac start up so slow since installing 10.10.1

Since installing 10.10.1 Yosemite my start up takes 12 minutes before I can open and read a web page what can I do to speed it up?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Why would my imac internet be so slow suddenly?

In the last few days our safari connection has slowed dramatically. Is there something we need to check or do on the computer. We have cable internet so we shouldn't have to wait this long for pages to load.

You should be able to reboot the modem and/or router by just unplugging both, or turning them off, if there is a power switch. Wait a minute or two and reconnect to power or turn them back on.
I don't think you want to reset either.

  • Why is my iMac running so slow and crashing all the time?

My iMac is last years model, running on Lion OS X. It's one year old, I had it Christmas 2011. It's 1TB with 4GB RAM. It's partitioned with Bootcamp, Windows 7, so it's 100GB Win7 and 900GB OS X. I'm only using 350GB of RAM altogether.
It's started running ridiuclously slow. Firstly, it was just when I started to work with large files in Photoshop (CS5.1). I was attempting to work on a piece for college which size is A2 (594 x 420), but it was painfully slow, so I literally stopped working and started researching into how to improve performance. I deleted a lot of software that I didn't need, verified and repaired discs, nothing seemed to work.
Now Photoshop isn't the only problem. Certain websites aren't loading when they're working fine on my iPhone and on my iMac, such as Facebook, Google, but websites like Twitter and Gmail are working? I downloaded Avast and started to scan for a virus, but then the deadly annoying pop up saying "You need to restart you Mac, hold down the power button etc" popped up... I dunno what I'm supposed to do now, and I dunno why it's acting like this. It's been fine. Think it's a virus? I'm scanning now but nothing found as of yet.
If anybody knows what's going on, or if this has happened to them, please let me know! I know I could just book a Genius appointment and take it to the Apple store, but I have university interviews in a couple of days, no external hard drives to put my work on, and it's 27" which is hard to lug around town...
    Thank-you.

  • My iMac started running slow now won't start at all

Two days ago, my Mid 2011 iMac 27-inch, OSX Lion 10.7.5 started running very slow.  Had trouble opening and closing apps.  Then after restarting, it took an extraordinary amount of time to start.  Had to shut down by holding in Power button.  Restart failed a few times, then I was finally able to get to desktop but unable to open any apps.  After many tries and waiting about 30 minutes between each keystroke for something to happen, I got to Disk Utility.
Under the First Aid tab, I ran Verify disk and got "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be Ok."  Repair Disk was not an active button.  At one point I got to the Force Quit menu under the Apple and force quitted Safari, iPhoto, and one other app (maybe Disk Utility) but then still was not able to Shut Down the computer.
Some background info that may or not be important,  I have been unable to Empty Trash or Secure Empty Trash for a long time.  Most of my hard drive filled capacity (60%) are photos and videos.  After running for what seems a very long time, I'd get an error message about not having the right permissions to delete some files in Trash.
Back to Disk Utility, I tried to run Repair Permissions and Verify Disk Permissions, and both just ran forever (hours) until I stopped them.  After 6 hours of reading possible solutions in this community but being able to perform none of them, I unplugged the computer because I couldn't get to Shut Down.
This morning, I plugged it back in and upon hitting Power, it took about 10 minutes to get the User icons.  I clicked on mine and got a gray screen with the spinning circle.  That was about 30 minutes ago and nothing has changed.
I welcome to all offers of help.  My concern is that I was in the middle of copying folders upon folders of photos and videos to an external hard drive for the past several weeks and still have not completed that project.  I look forward to a solution that would not result in the loss of photos an videos.

When I selected Disk Utility, the Repair Disk button was active.  It ran for a few minutes then read, "The Volume Macintosh HD appears to be Ok."  Followed by "Volume repair complete" and "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."  I have no idea what that last statement means.
I just ran "Verify Disk" and  "The Volume Macintosh HD appears to be Ok" was the result.
I also ran "Verify Disk Permissions" which wouldn't run yesterday but did just now.  Ended with "Permissions verifications complete."
I ran Repair Disk Permissions, "Permissions Repair Complete."
What should be my next step?

  • Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..

Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..?
When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..

Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

  • Why is my imac so slow browsing

why is my imac so unbelievably slow.I have a gig of ram?

"I have a gig of ram?"
What are the other specs? Processor speed? Free space on hard drive?
Is the slowness limititd to some sites?
Slow choppy web video is the most common complaint, and there is not much you can do about that. The newer video technology is optimized for Intel processors. That aren't many G4 friendly vidoe web sites around any more.

  • My iMac start slow

Is any one know how to make my make my Imac start faster?

    Don't turn off the mac.
Replace the hd with a ssd - solid state drive.
    Max out your memory.
Has it slowed down recently?  Look at your login items & see what you can remove.
    Robert

  • Why has my Imac recently slowed down

It has gotten very slow lately

How full is your hard drive?
Hhave you emptied OS X Trash icon in the Dock, lately?
Apple Mail and iPhoto have their own separate Trash to empty.
    Have you emptied these?
Iin OS X Disk Utility, run the repair Disk Permissions routine.
If doing these things only marginally helps, next is to upgrade your RAM memory.
Newer Intel versions of OS X use a lot more CPU, GPU, hard drive and RAM resources.
The 4 GBs of RAM in your iMac is really the working minimum of RAM needed just to run OS X, alone, by itself.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to slow down.
Your iMac can take a max. amount of  32 GBs of RAM.
Install, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM. Install more if you can afford it.
Here are the exact specs for the RAM your iMac needs
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC (macsales).
