Why does my IPad not have a Software Updates button in my General tab?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - though google do have app versions in the store

  • HT4623 my ipad 2 doesnt have a software update option! How do I get one?

My pad doesnt have the software update option in general settings, Just wondering how  would down load it onto my ipad!!  So right now i cant use netflix really want to watch some movies! Thanks!

What you're talking about is a feature that comes with iOS5, the ability to update over the air. If you don't see it then your device is likely running iOS4.something.
In that case, you way to update is to hook your iPad up to the computer you nomally sync with and update the software that way.
You will need to update your iTUnes to 11.1, it's required for iOS7. THen I suggest you do a full sync and backup of your iPad. THEN follow the prompts to download and install iOS7.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
        1.    If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
        2.    Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
        3.    After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
        4.    If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
        5.    After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
        6.    From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
        7.    After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
        8.    After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • HT4623 my phone doesnt have a software update option.  how do I update my IOS?

I am trying to update my IOS and on my phone I dont have a software update button.  How can I update it?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Please note if you have a 3G as shown, it can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

  • Why does my iPad 2 not list software updates in the settings?

My iPad 2 does not give an option for software updates in the general settings.

Because it's running an iOS version prior to 5.0. The next update needs to be installed from iTunes on a computer, and if possible, the one the device normally syncs with.

  • IOS 5 software update - please help!

    Hi
I opted to update my iPhone 4 last night to the IOS 5 software. I have had my iPhone for over a year with no problems including previous seamless software updates.
40 minutes into the update my iPhone gets turned off (as you would expect) and then gets restarted. A message appears saying "The SIM card inserted into this iPhone does not appear to be supported". The same message appears on my actual iPhone. I was advised to do a 'restore' to the original settings but because itunes will no longer accept the phone due the "non supported" SIM card I can't even access anything regarding the phone from the drop down menu.
ANY advise would be gratefully received.
    Thanks

  • Serious issues with software updates - please help!

A few weeks ago, I installed the 10.6.3 update (standard, not combo), and after everything was said and done, I was left with an incredibly unstable system - virtually all non-Apple software would crash on launch. I repaired my permissions, repaired the hard drive (which was fine, just a precaution), zapped the PRAM, etc. Eventually I managed to download the 10.6.3 Combo Update, applied that over my previous busto patch, rebooted, and everything worked just fine.
    Until yesterday.
Last night, I installed Security Update 2010-003 - and all of those problems came back. By the time I rebooted to go into "Safe Mode," I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 application crashes - the only apps I found that didn't crash were Safari and Disk Utility (and Finder, Dock, and things of that nature). Repaired permissions, rebooted, and...
Kernel panic. Safe Mode yielded a different kernel panic. Anything I did other than booting from a CD caused a kernel panic. So, I restored from my last Time Machine backup, and now everything is just fine.
So - I've now had two absolutely catastrophic software updates in a row. I'm not even sure what this suggests, as my machine was completely stable and working like a dream before each of these updates - and is back in the same condition now. Does anyone have suggestions on where I should be looking to see what is wrong, or tools I could run to figure out why my computer turns into a very angry paperweight after applying patches now?

    Hi C&A,
I know it may sound a lil freaky but i've done some research on this matter. It's basically a technical error in Apple's Software Updater, the connection between the internet & software disconnect or timeouts due to lack of high internet activity which is the main reason why the speed starts to decline while downloading the iTunes.
Solution. This would only work well if you've got a broadband, otherwise this can take alot of time.
*Start downloading iTunes from the updater, within 2 mins... log in to your Facebook, email, keep clicking on pages every 20-30 seconds, as this will keep the connection stable, keep doing this till the iTunes downloads completely.

    Hello
I was checking for software updates for my Q10 yesterday and was informed that there is a new update
