Why is my iPhone 5 using so much data?

I have had my iPhone 5 for exactly one month. I have a shared plan with my daughter. We are on wifi all of the time except when she is in school. I have only used .039 gig. Her phone has used14.47 gig in 29 days. 10 of those in the last 3 days. She deleted all apps. I called Verizon and they said y
" yes that phone uses lot of data". Funny how when she gave me the times of the biggest usage we are connected to wifi, or asleep. Makes no sense. I have had to upgrade our usage 4 times in 1 week to try to avoid over charges. We have never used 15 gigs in 1 month, NEVER! I can't seem to get any help fron Verizon. I love the phone, but if it is going to cost 16gigs a month that's not what was sold to me.

If your daughter has an Exchange email account that has gone awry it could be causing constant polling but that would also be running her battery down in short order. But even that would not have come close to 16GB.
The only way she would come close to that is downloading large files (think HD movies or TV shows), streaming lots of movies, or playing streaming video games with heavy graphics. You can check her iPhone under Video to see if she has a number of movies. If all of those are negative I would check back with Verizon and ask for a supervisor.

Why is the iPhone 5 using so much data I have read a lot of complaints and I have went over on my plan and never have?
I have even turned off LTE. Cut off my cellular data off of apps. Still uses data I switched back to my iPhone 4 cause I had used my
    Data in 2 weeks!

I have the same problem on my 4S 64G: I updated to 7.1.1 and burned through my cellular data allowance without running anything that ought to be using it. I incurred an overage charge on Thursday, my new billing cycle started on Friday, and I immediately had used 3/4 of my allowance for the new cycle. I typically do not use my allowance in an entire month so burning through it in a day or two twice in one week is very much not right.
Possibly unrelated or not: last night I was out, did NOT use any apps that should use cellular data, and came home and my phone refused to connect to my home wifi despite turning this and that on and off. I burned cellular allowance while wifi was available.
It seems like someting on my phone, whether an app or the iOS itself, is using cellular data even while my phone is not in use. All I could do is turn off Cellular Data in Settings but that very much diminishes the usefulness of a phone that has served me well -- without data overages! -- for several years.
    Please fix this, Apple!

  • Why is my iphone 5 using so much data, way more than I ever used before.  How do I fix it?

I am using waaaaay more data than ever before since switching to an iphone 5.  I have gone over my data plan in just a few days.  I used 10g in 2 weeks and I hardly had it on.  Help.

If you go to Settings > Cellular and look at "Use Cellular data for" each app will display the amount of cellular data used since you last did "Reset Statistics" on that screen. Also if you tap "System Services" at the bottom of that list of apps it will give details on system usage of cellular data. That may help you identify the culprit.

Have you looked at Settings > Cellular to identify what is using cellular data?

  • Why is my iPhone 5 using so much internet?

So I've got a new iPhone 5, got it just over a week ago and don't get me wrong, I am stoked with it. BUT a small problem has started to occur.
My sister came to me a few days ago saying that for some reason her internet data was being used that comes with her prepaid recharge, I ignored it, thinking she was just going to lots of different sites but ofcourse it's always different when it happens to us.
The first time I recharged, I had no problem with my internet, but this morning, I got a message saying I was under 50MB and it'd start using my credit, and then 20 minutes later, bam, no credit when I had only been on the phone to my brother who called me. so I recharged when I got to work which gives me 500MB and $450 credit, after 8 hours at work, of only checking my facebook a few times which is free, it says I'm under 50MB again. What? And then when I haven't touched it since receiving that text, 10 minutes later, I'm under 10MB and they're going to start charging me directly from my credit.
What is happening and how one arth do I stop it?

Well, you're using iOS7 which can use a lot more data.  iOS 7 now lets apps continue processing in the background (more then before), so that can be one issue.
Look over the following article for info on why you cell phone may be using up a lot of cell usage.  It has to do with changes in how iOS 7 works.

  • Why is my iPhone 5c taking so much data??

Hi, I have a 32gb iPhone 5c on a Verizon share everything plan. There are also two iPhone 4's on it. I was checking my data usage on the verizon wireless app, and out of our 4gb of data, we had used 1.212 gb and 1.2 was me!! I don't know why because 98% of the time I'm on wifi, and I never stream or download anything on LTE. The iPhone 4's that we have never have taken that much! Is it because my iPhone is LTE and the 4's are 3G?
Is there any other reason why this is happening?
    Thanks for your help.

If you go to Settings > Cellular > "Use Cellular Data For" that will show you the amount of cellular data each app has used (small numbers below the app name). Also, if you tap System Services in that same section, it will give you the details of how much cellular data each System Service has used. Both numbers will be the amount used since you last Reset Statistics at the bottom of that same section. Looking at those numbers should help you identify what is using the data.

  • Droid Turbo why are you using so much data?

I have yet to get a response from Verizon on why my droid turbo is using so much data.  It is apparent their is some flaw when my phone shows I have used 100 mb so far this billing period and Verizon wireless shows I have use 1.17 gb of data.  I have checked all of my apps to restrict background data and yet it is using data like it is going out of style.  If somebody has a solution please let me know.

I had the same problem. After checking with other Turbo users on another board it turns out that even when you sign into wifi Turbo was using data. I believe this issue was supposed to be fixed in the last update, but I'm not sure it has been. I called Verizon today to get a refund for the $55 in overage fees I got in my first month with the Turbo. Verizon gave it to me, but in the course of the conversation the tech support guy asked me to turn on airplane mode and he sent me a text, which came through fine. He seemed fairly shocked about that, but still said that "we can't be sure what the source of the problem is, it could be your router." My router works fine and we have no connectivity issues with all the other devices in the house including the other cellphone, and it would have nothing to do with texts coming through. So, that's my experience with this issue, but at least I got a refund for last month's overages.

I just got iphone 5c and i am not happy with it. It uses to much data and i don't even know how. I can't get the ringtones i want for my contacts.I got it on my free upgrade but i want to take it back and get something else but where i got it they say i can't because i don't have the earbuds and i have serches or them. now i am suck with a phone i don't like at all until my next upgrade. this is very dishearten

    1. If you are this unhappy with that phone, and the lost earbuds is the only thing stopping you from taking it back, why do not just buy some earbuds. That way you can get rid of that phone. It all depend upon how much you want to get rid of that phone.
    2. Yet if you are stuck with that iPhone, here is something might help you to control the data usage. By design, iPhones do turn off WiFi when they go dormant. So if a download is in progress and so forth when the phone goes dormant, it will switch to use cellular data, if this setting is left on. Therefore, from multi-sources I have learned that if you keep your iPhone connected to a power source, then it will stay connected to the available WiFi.

  • Why is my iphone 3gs using excessive data?

why is my iphone 3gs using excessive data?

    Check your (push) notifications.
Settings > Notifications > Look at what applications are pushing information to your phone. Turn off the applications' notifications that you don't care about.
Settings > Email > Check how often your phone is checking email and sending it to you. Push will use the most data. Data usage goes down from there.
    Check your running applications.
From your home screen, double-press the home (physical) button > Hold down an icon until they shake and the "X"s appear on their corners. Hit the "X"s to close out the application.
Some applications can continue to use your data while running the background even though you are not actively using the application.
    Are you using YouTube?
YouTube, and any other video application, uses a lot of data.
    Are you using Pandora?
Music applications can also use up data though not as much as video.

  • How can I be using so much data on my iPhone 5

How can I possibly be using so much data on my iPhone. I usually listen to Pandora for about an Hour each day I drive to work. So far (the first 8 days of my billing cycle I have used about 1 GB of data. According to Verizon's calculations I based on this usage I should be using a total of about 1.5 GB of data/month. I called both Verizon and Apple and received no resolution. Apple confirmed that the Phone's wifi shuts off WIFI when the phone is asleep. Resulting in the phone switching to LTE. Apple also indicated that apps that are in the background tend to use data as well. This still doesn't make sense. I had the same data usage pattern (Pandora) with my old 3GS and only used about 1GB/ month. There has got to be another solution. I refuse to believe that just using Pandora for about an hour/day for 5/days a week results in a GB of data usage. Any suggestions?

So, I thought itunes match (like Pandora) streams music from the cloud. I didn't think that the phone 'syncs' several times a day. I did notice a pattern between 11am-1pm data being used in the order of 29 mb yesterday, 42 mb the day before, and 43 mb the day before that. This is at a time when I know I am not using any significant data on my phone. Yesterday I even closed all my apps w/the exception of Pandora which I made sure wasn't running during the day. This additional usage can easily add up to the 100 mb/day i'm averaging.

  • Why do I have to guess how much data I might use in a month when I select a plan?

When I sign up for water service, I don't guess that I might use 1,000 gallons a month, and then pay three times the going rate for water if I take a few extra showers. I get charged for how much water I use that month.
When I sign up for electricity service, I don't guess that I might use some set number of kilowatt hours, and then pay three times the going rate if we have a heat wave and I run my air conditioner for a few extra hours.
Why do I have to guess how much data I might use, and then spend three times the going rate if I stay up watching youtube videos for a few extra nights?
It is stressful to have to constantly monitor usage, and figure out ratios of how much I've used compared to how much time is left in the billing cycle to see if I need to curb my usage. It is not a good customer experience. I would prefer that data be charged a flat rate based on actual usage, perhaps with an option to throttle speeds at certain levels to prevent cases where a minor lapse in judgment could ruin my monthly budget, like forgetting to check data usage religiously on a device meant to simplify my life.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Simple answer is Verizon is offering a block of data for usage.
Where I live the water bill states my wife and I are being charged for 30,000 gallons per quarter/half and the price is say $60 however we never use any where near that amount. I send the meter reading in and it shows the amount we use. But the hamlet we are in has a set amount of gallons. Not fair but we live with it.
For your data outside of the unlimited which is not available any more to new customers you may be a light user and never go over the 2GB for $30 dollars a month. If you do you will pay through the nose for data. If you pay for more data say 4GB and I don't have the price for it so lets say its $70 then you don't have to watch as much for overage fees. But you are paying for the data in advance so as not go over and get hit with whopping fees.
It is just the way it is.

  • Why am i using so much data since downloading IOS8

why am i using so much data since downloading IOS8

Don't know -- but you can do a little detective work by going to Settings > Cellular and look at the apps in the section titled "Use Cellular Data For." Each app that has used data will show the amount used since the statistics were last reset. If you tap on "System Services" at the bottom of that list it will show the details of system usage. You can reset the statistics at the bottom of the screen. Checking those numbers for a while should help identify what is going on.

  • My iphone5 using too much data

ANyone know why im using so much data on my iphone 5 ive never down loaded music films or any thing and used up 1gb in 17days

Your probably using alot of facebook and twitter and the internet. All use alot of data. The Iphone 5 just uses data for everything either use WIFI whenever you can or upgrade your phone plan to the most data possible. Make sure you close down the apps too when your not using them. Sneaky phone services probably charge you for that.
