Why is my iPhoto very slow?

My background: have been in the graphic design business for 10+ years now. Have been working on Macs for about 13 years, so I am familiar with how things should feel/work in programs.
My questions:
1. My iPhoto is VERY slow. I have friends who have it and they say it does not feel slow to them. I have only a few hundred photos in it, not that many...but it takes literally up to 30 seconds sometimes for me to navigate throughout different buttons. If I click on an event, it will take 10 seconds for the page of photos to pop up (and there may only be like 25 photos in that event). If I click on the scroll bar to scroll down, it'll take like 15 seconds for it to kick on before doing it. I was hoping to get very organized with all my photos, but it is discouraging me because I don't have the patience or time to sit and wait 10-30 seconds each time I click on something. Why is this?? Can it be fixed?
2. How can I see the actual "raw" files of each photo? When I go to iPhoto folder in my applications, it doesn't show me a folder with all the files. I can only view them through iPhoto. Is there a way to actually SEE all my raw files? If so, where?
Thanks

Libuse

How much free disk space do you have? What else is running? have you run activity monitor (in the utilities folder in your applications folder) to see memory usage and CPU usage by various programs?
Just to comfort you iPhoto is not inherently slow - in fact it is fast - and yours can be too
I have a slower iMac than you (2.1 GHz) with about 22,500 Photos in 230 events and it is quick
The largest cause of slowness in iPhoto is lack of hard drive space. Other things that can slow iPhoto down (although with virtually no photos they should not be the issue) are web galleries being updated (set them to manual and not to allow uploads) and opening iPhoto in Photo view with event titles turned off
How can I see the actual "raw" files of each photo?
Are you talking about RAW files, photos shot in RAW on your camera or accessing the files inside the iPhoto library?
If you are talking about accessing your photos, click here for a discussion on accessing your photos safely and correctly.
If you are talking about RAW format photos you can access them as noted above and you can access them in an external editor by setting iPhoto to edit in an external editor and clicking the edit in RAW checkbox

    There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

    Could something from Bitdefender be activated somehow and slowing my computer down?
    Yes. Back up all data, then uninstall "Bitdefender" completely according to the developer's instructions -- NOT by dragging an application to the Trash or hunting for files by name.

  • Iphoto very slow since upgrade Snow Leopard

    Hello
    i aprreciate your help, here.
    Since we've upgraded our MacBook to Snow Leopard, iphoto '09 is very very slow. it takes up to 45 sec to go from one photo to another if I use the adjustement tools or crop.
    What do we do?
    Thank you

    I really don't understand why you're surprised. The idea that software makers somehow cripple existing apps to make users upgrade is common. It's also silly.
    Let me give you a simple example. Today I paid €900 to repair the clutch on a Renault Espace that has 36k on the clock. Should I suppose this is a plan by Renault to get me to buy a new car? If it is, it's a remarkably stupid plan, because I can pretty much guarantee you that then next car I buy will not be a Renault. So too with Software. If you really think that Apple are trying to trick you or force you to upgrade, wouldn't you be stupid to do that? Wouldn't a sensible person instead by software by some other maker, rather than the one you think is cheating you? In fact, you'd really have to be very stupid to continue to use the software of a company that you believe is cheating you.
    So, assuming you're not a stupid person, and assuming Apple are also not stupid, how would it make sense for Apple to trick you into upgrading?
    Plus, of course, the fact that I ran 08 on 10.6 with no issues and so do most people.
    And, you know, I am quite familiar with this forum, and yes I see the reports of performance issue. Of course, I actually read the posts and learn that there are many possible reasons for the issue. It's a symptom with several possible causes.
    Have you tried creating a library in a new user account? What's the performance like on that?

  • Why the response is very slow when the DNS enrty of server PC is removed ??

    Hi
    Though this subject has been already discussed at many places,im unable to get the clue.Here is my problem.In my office (LAN),server and client are running at different PC.After DNS entry of server PC is removed from DNS server,the page loading and every request & response between client and server is very slow.It takes 2 minutes for each and every request.And coming to the possible solutions,is "configuring the server PC in DNS server" is the only solution?When both the server and client PCs are DNS configured i dont see any issue or slowdown.Any help would be really appreciated
    Assuming it is a lookup issue,i have written the following test application.
    public class DnsName
    public static void main(String[] arg)
    String ipaddress = "";
    String hostaddress = "";
    if(arg.length == 1)
    ipaddress = arg[0];
    else
    System.out.println("!!!!!!Usage : java DnsName <ipaddress>");
    System.exit(0);
    System.out.println("Time before processing : " + System.currentTimeMillis());
    try
    hostaddress = (InetAddress.getByName(ipaddress)).getHostName();
    catch(UnknownHostException uhe)
    System.out.println("Exception occured " + uhe);
    System.out.println("Ip address : " + ipaddress);
    System.out.println("Host name : " + hostaddress);
    System.out.println("Time after processing : " + System.currentTimeMillis());
    When it was compiled and run on a linux PC,time difference betwwen process is around 50ms,but when the same application is run in a Windows PC,the time difference is around 4-5 seconds(4000ms).Can anyone tell me what makes the difference in Windows??

    When you do getHostName() on an InetAddress, what you're doing is asking the OS to do a reverse lookup. So basically this is a windoze problem, not a java problem (although that probably doesn't help you much) Try searching google to see why a windows reverse lookup might be so slow and go from there.

  • Turning photostream on makes Iphoto very slow and unresponsive.

    When i enable Photostream either through the settings or directly from Iphoto it causes Iphoto to become very slow and unresponsive.
    When i click on an album to view it takes around 60 seconds for the album to open, when it finally opens all the thumbnails are blurry and scrolling through the album is virtually impossibe.
    If i then turn of Photostream everything is fine.
    Im using a late 2011 Air with 4gb memory and i have around 132gb of free space on the drive.

    jaceylucifer,
    I just sorted an issue I had. When checking the photsteam box in iPhot preferences it unchecked straight away.
    Method 1 on this link sorted me out in 2 mins. I have advised the senior apple care guy that was trying to sort this out for me.  http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/photostream-keeps-turning-off-in-iphoto-fix-it /
    Hope it helps.

  • IPhoto very slow and Quit

    I just imported about 8000 pictures to my new imac from a windows pc. Since I made the import the computer runs VERY slow when iPhoto is open and iPhoto runs especially slow. In addition, when I click the red x to close (but not quit) the program it stalls for about ten seconds then completely shuts down (quits). Any suggestions would be great!
    iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Wow, that must be frustrating!
    How much RAM do you have in your machine?
    When you start getting that large of a library in iPhoto, it has been known to bog down, and slow down quite a bit. Generating all of the thumbnails can be an issue, and hadnling the scrolling through the main library display can become awfully slow as well.
    Although it applies to an earlier version of iPhoto, try reading this particular article. The suggestions it gives on breaking up your Library into manageable chunks transcends versions.

  • Why is my Air Very Slow?

    I have a MacBook Air, late 2010, running Mountain Lion (it was shipped with Snow Leopard and I've upgraded to Lion, then Mountain Lion.  I've been disappointed by the performance on Internet, very slow to load pages, sometimes not at all, and video clips on Youtube invariably stop every few seconds for a reload that often takes 15-20 seconds.  No difference between Firefox and Safari. I don't see much adverse comment on Internet re Air's performance, so what's going on?  Two questions:
    1. If all wireless bars are on, can I assume the signal is OK?
    2. Is Air just plain underpowered?  Is the new Air better?
    Thanks, Irwin

    walkeri wrote:
    What was that all about by the way?  What is DNS anyway?  Is that like IP address or something?  Should that be a part of instructions before installing Mountain Lion, about which there seem to be many complaints about slowness?
    Irwin
    It's kinda hard to explaing without writing a whole page....But sometimes the DNS assigned to you by your ISP is slow so what i did was give you a public dns from OpenDNS if you'd like to know more about DNS and their functions - Click here.

  • Why does safari is very slow on MacBook Air?, why does safari is very slow on MacBook Air?, why does safari is very slow on MacBook Air?, why does safari is very slow on MacBook Air?, why does safari is very slow on MacBook Air?

    Hello. I am using MacBook Air. Safari is very slow and it doesn't open many websites. for instance: dizi-mag.com . please help me

    Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

    Because it does a DNS lookup. And without a server, the interface must wait for a timeout.

  • HT1338 Why is Finder running very slow?

    Finder is extremely slow.  Actually opening any folder is very slow.  I'm always watching a pin wheel

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    A common cause of a slow user interface is a large set of image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons. If you have more than a dozen or so such files, move them to another folder.
    Another possible cause is iCloud activity, especially Photo Stream synchronization. If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane and see whether there's an improvement.
    Otherwise take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
    Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
    Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
    Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Select the 50 or so most recent messages in the log. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
